20 Questions with a Fanfic Author

Yay, @chronologicalimplosion tagged me, and I love talking about my work!

1. How many works on AO3?

I have 156 works, which is wild. Like ten are drabbles. To be honest, I've been so active in OFMD fandom that this isn't that surprising, but it is kind of surprising to me that I have 65 non-OFMD works for 33 other fandoms (including Original Works). Roughly 10-15 of these were just my own idea to write and the rest were from exchanges through the years (my account is from 2012).

4. What fandoms do you write for?

Well, for about two years I wrote for nothing except OFMD. I think like 300,000 of those words were for OFMD fic? And I'm technically still kind of writing for it, but ... lately I've been feeling the urge to write for a lot of other fandoms rather than hyperfixating and being exclusive. Danmei particularly, TGCF and Scum Villain; I kind of want to write some genderbent smut for Qian Qiu and Yuwu but I need to read the later volumes first or else accept that I'm bullshitting.

(Though what I've really been spending my energy on lately has been original fiction - I'm at about 25k on one novella and 30k on another.)

5. Do you respond to comments?

Yes, although a lot of the time it's just "thanks!" or "thank you!" I appreciate every comment I get and I truly mean those thanks. Lately, since I've been writing less fic and therefore not getting as many comments, I tend to let them build up for a bit and then go through and reply to all of them at once.

6. Angstiest Ending?

I'm genuinely not sure that I've ever written an angsty ending. That's the chocolatepot guarantee, you always get a happy ending! Oh wait - I guess, technically the toxic Ed/Izzy fic no sign of land does end angstily, with Ed resigning himself to only being good enough to be Izzy's unwilling and unsafe dom.

7. Fic with the Happiest Ending?

Because all my fics except the previous end happily, it's hard to say which is happiest ... I suppose one of the ones tagged with "angst with a happy ending", since they have the biggest swing? Perhaps I Saw You And Sealed My Fate, the OFMD modern office/business AU where Stede was engaged to Hornigold, because I just felt like they were absolutely miserable the entire time until the last few scenes.

8. Do you get hate?

No, and I'll be honest, I sort of wish I did? I think this is because I do periodically get assholes mad at me for answers on AskHistorians, and whenever it happens I know I really hit the button. So it's like, if I can write a hot noncon fic that nobody is apparently offended by, was it really that nonconny or hot? (Yet lmao when I posted it, I was terrified that I would become the subject of a witch hunt.)

9. Do you write smut?

Yep! Though I hadn't written anything except some kinky literotica stuff until Trying It, my third genderbent Ed/Stede fic, which was all about Stede's nerves and their first time. I'd say "ironically", except it really isn't -- I was channeling my nerves over writing E-rated fic with other people's characters attached to my stable fandom pseud. And that clearly opened a door because I then wrote 15 more smutfics, nearly all genderbends.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Not in the sense of the characters from one canon meeting the characters from another. I do like writing fusions, where the characters from one canon are in the setting of another -- it's a fun challenge, I like seeing where they can line up and where they don't. Like A Perfectly Diabolical Angel, which is an OFMD/GO fusion.

11. Ever had a fic stolen?

No, I don't think so. Again, have to admit I kind of wish I had, for the horrible compliment.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No, but I've had a couple turned into podfics, and one with a scene made into a comic, which was SO COOL.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic?

Not really. Momentum, linked at the top, was largely plotted out by Feriowind (as it was an RBB) but I did the writing. I started co-writing a fic with @ghostalservice but I only managed a chapter and then got to the point of feeling so guilty about not writing that it became impossible. 🙃 I love the idea, but I'm spending most of my time now trying to write stuff I can publish and when I do work on fic it's very "what does my spirit move me to work on?" (And what my spirit moves me to work on is smutty genderbends.)

14. All time favorite ship?

I don't have one single OTP. Ed/Stede definitely dominates my bookmarks, but that's mainly because I was so consumed with OFMD for such a long time, and the last fandom I was similarly consumed with for a matter of years was pre-AO3. I don't think I feel more strongly about it now than about the other ships I love (Aziraphale/Crowley, Hualian, Wangxian).

I will cop to having an OC-OC couple that I am obsessed with from a past canon. They're the classic childish type of OCs who are related to canon characters which is part of why I am too intensely embarrassed to ever talk about them in specifics, but I've been maladaptively daydreaming about them for something like 25 years. I have plans to try to turn them into the central figures of an original novel, though, which will hopefully at least let me be like "blah blah blah, I love them, here's why they're so perfectly suited to one another" without fear.

15. WIPs you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I started We're Lost Out Here In The Stars around-ish the time of the initial Neil Gaiman accusations, and I don't think I'm going to be feeling at all like going back to it before s3 (it's a between-s2-and-s3 fic), or possibly ever. Yeah.

My OFMD Dirty Rotten Scoundrels AU has also been sitting at one chapter for a really long time, so it seems unlikely that I'll get around to it now that the hyperfixation's faded. :(

16. Writing strengths?

Fic-specifically, I know that I'm good at writing dialogue that sounds like the canon characters. I don't know why! Other than that I tend to write by imagining scenes audio/visually and almost transcribing them, and the imagined part is half conscious and half subconscious -- some of the time I don't''t feel like I'm making it up at all, I'm just watching it as it unspools in my head and taking down what they say.

More broadly, I do think I'm going at coming up with characters who stand out from each other and keeping them distinct through a story (much like I "transcribe" events, it usually feels like as soon as I make them up I know all of their quirks or like they show them to me in the scenes I "watch"), and at writing historical settings, although the latter feels like less of a strength and more of a knock-on effect from having read a lot of social history.

17. Writing Weaknesses?

I have this tendency to be concise, and sometimes that's a good thing but frequently it's not, as I'll struggle to write a relaxing description of a place or person, or to let a conversation unspool slowly. (If a conversation does go slowly it's usually because I'm putting thoughts between each line of dialogue and not that they're communicating inefficiently as people do, unless I make a big effort to keep them from just saying what they mean.)

I also struggle to keep from getting too much in my own head about my writing choices. A lot of "this is self-indulgent! people will think you're inserting yourself into the character, even though it's completely IC for them!"

As a result of those of these things, I find writing smut so hard. I can write some real kinky shit, but the long sections of how they're feeling, the figurative language about what their lover's tongue is doing to them, etc. do not come to me well.

And I just write very slowly. Right now I'm doing a thing that involves writing 330 words minimum per day on a project (the 30k novella) and while I do tend to go a bit over 330 it very much is A Goal I Shoot For rather than Haha A Nice Easy Writing Session.

18. Thoughts on mixed language dialogue?

This question is such a throwback! It reminds me of when people used to be upset about fangirl Japanese all the time. (Maybe people in anime fandoms are still mad about it, I don't know. Interesting that I don't see it happening in danmei fandom.) I don't really have an opinion on it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

My first fic was Some things never change ..., a next-gen Enchanted Forest Chronicles story from November 2000. And then my next one was a Newsies OFC. I miss those simple, unsophisticated times.

20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?

Genuinely can't name one. There are things I love about every fic I've written, and yeah some have more than others but none are my absolute favorite.

Our whole campaign in Alabama has been centered around the right to vote. In focusing the attention of the nation and the world today on the flagrant denial of the right to vote, we are exposing the very origin, the root cause, of racial segregation in the Southland. Racial segregation as a way of life did not come about as a natural result of hatred between the races immediately after the Civil War. There were no laws segregating the races then. And as the noted historian, C. Vann Woodward, in his book, The Strange Career of Jim Crow, clearly points out, the segregation of the races was really a political stratagem employed by the emerging Bourbon interests in the South to keep the southern masses divided and southern labor the cheapest in the land. Not only that, but they began uniting the Negro and white masses (Yeah) into a voting bloc that threatened to drive the Bourbon interests from the command posts of political power in the South.

To meet this threat, the southern aristocracy began immediately to engineer this development of a segregated society. (Right) I want you to follow me through here because this is very important to see the roots of racism and the denial of the right to vote. Through their control of mass media, they revised the doctrine of white supremacy. They saturated the thinking of the poor white masses with it, (Yes) thus clouding their minds to the real issue involved in the Populist Movement. They then directed the placement on the books of the South of laws that made it a crime for Negroes and whites to come together as equals at any level. (Yes, sir) And that did it. That crippled and eventually destroyed the Populist Movement of the nineteenth century.“

As much as I'm sure it swallows whole your time and the time of other TAs, it's rather heartening to me to see that you guys are actually grading the code based on outputs and leafing through the weird outliers to see what's up. Cause a lot of my friends in comp sci told me most of their code was graded automatically based on how much it deviated from the exact "correct" script, going line-by-line and including shit like indents.
