This evening I’ve been playing and experimenting with the lattice shapes I cast in pewter. These shapes didn’t turn out quite as I had wanted them to but I like the aged, damaged look of them and so wanted to explore how I could still make use of them. I decided to use them as a support for some more spiral weaving. So far uk very happy with how they are turning out. These spiral weavings make me think of spiders weaving cobwebs. I saw these adorable little #weavings on a few different accounts here and on Pinterest so I thought I'd give one a try. The #embroideryhoop is warped in a circular fashion then woven. I then#embroidered the eyes and #needlefelted the nose. The flowers are #crocheted as well. I’m continuing with my resolution to start each day with artist and technique research to motivate, inspire and inform my work. Today I’ve looked at two contemporary textile artists - Alice Fox and Tammy Kanat. I love Alice Fox’s work in particular her collections Findings and Leaf Stitching. Findings includes small found objects she’s found such as limpet and conker shells and which she then uses as a support for circular weaving. Her leaf stitching reminds me of the work I did yesterday and how I was stitching together household packaging. Tammy Kanat creates large wall hangings using circular weaving with strong colour basis in nature. I am working on circular weaving today to start to create a lattice work window onto my work.

Some of my circular weaving that I started in my first project (the old silver bead from a souq in Riyadh) at college for the brief Mend and Repair and continued (on paper in my sketchbook) for my current final major project. I had originally created it in response to the wonderful shape of the broken bead and musing on how to enhance that with a repair. Technically quite difficult both to drill the holes on such a small and misshapen object and also to pass the needle through it to create the warp. Later I discovered artists who have used similar techniques and who I have researched further today, both Alice Fox and Tammy Kanat have been my favourites. I plan to use this technique further starting today to create a lattice work ‘window’ on chicken wire.
