The past two Fridays I ran down to Academy Records on 12th to dig through their stuffed Soul / Funk boxes. The boxes were stuffed with some familiar favorites, long time wants and records I have never seen before. One of my favorite hard Salsa tracks is Ricardo Marrero and the Group’s amazing “Southern Boulevard,” and was ecstatic to find it on 7-inch. Curtis Lee & The K.C.P’s - “Everybody’s Going Wild” backed with his James Brown “influenced," “Get In My Bag.” Eddy “G” Giles giving the drummer some on, “Soul Feeling.” Out of Philly, The United Image’s “The African Bump.” Moody Scott’s hard hitting message song, “(We Gotta) Bust Out Of The Ghetto.” An as of unknown to me, Jay and Cathy’s Clowns amazing two sider with Gil Scott-Heron’s “The Bottle” backed with the powerful, “Doin’ The Best I Can.” Ray & The Corruptors - “Funky Time,” that I knew from one of the Goldmine comps, The always exciting Garnet Mimms “Stop And Check Yourself,” a not known to me Vicki Anderson with Clarence Reid and Willie Clarke collaboration on Brownstone and a boot of The Vibrations “Right On Brother- Right On,” plus a few more. These boxes are deep and if you need some great records that are regular spins you need to be diggin’ here. @primitivesoundsystem #primitivesoundsystem #vinylrules #vinyljunkie #vinyl45s #RareRecords #recordcollection #recordcollector @academyrecords #AcademyRecords12thSt #Ricardo Marrero #CurtisLee #EddyGGiles #TheUnitedImage #MoodyScott #JayandCathysClowns #RayAndTheCorruptors #GarnetMimms #VickiAnderson #ClarenceReid #TheVibrations https://www.instagram.com/p/B2rvq6xJN39/?igshid=ma529747ehnx

Clarence Reid died in January of this year. When I began looking into Reid's background I had expected to find a typical "soul artist who slipped between the cracks" type-story, as so many amazing soul singers seem to go overlooked. Only a small percentage of these singers are reexamined, by someone who digs up their old material, and even a smaller percentage of these singers have their work rereleased and repressed, usually on an independent record label. This typical backstory was NOT what I found when I sought information for Clarence Reid. Clarence Reid started out as a typical soul singing crooner, but didn't reach any great success until he began recording as Blowfly and making sexually-explicit, adult "party records" full of X-rated, Weird Al style covers that played off of the original popular songs. Blowfly also wore a superhero costume and posed on most if his covers with the accompaniment of many nude women. Blowfly managed to place himself on Billboard's U.S. charts, and numerous artists (Wu-Tang Clan, DJ Shadow, Beyonce, DJ Daddy Kane, Mary J. Blige, to name a few) have sampled Reid's work, keeping his sound alive, far past his prime. On this week's 32nd playlist we will be featuring a song that Reid recorded before creating his Blowfly persona. Listen for "Part Time Lover," from his PG-rated album Dancin' With Nobody But You. #clarencereid #blowfly #stonedauntygeorge #soulmusic
