Nature and Privilege: A Prevailing Canadian Heritage

“Privilege”: an important topic that only recently seems to have become a “buzzword”, though it has been shaping our world throughout most of human history. Through my experience, in Canada we see privilege in a way that is inseparable from nature. Privilege is, in my opinion, the unearned benefits/advantages we are given through life for no other reason than the conditions we are born into: the color of your skin, your sex, the country or region you were born in, the socioeconomic standing of your parents, the first language you were taught, and so much more play a factor. Privilege comes at the expense of others who are denied it. Having privilege is not the choice of the person receiving it, nor is it the choice of those being denied it. What defines us is how we decide to acknowledge and utilize the advantages we are given.

Within Canada people experience the privilege of interacting with the natural world, having natural areas “conserved”, and being able to access nature in ways that have been made convenient and relatively free of severe risk. I put “conserved” in quotations for the same reason that our access to nature is a privilege: such conservation is done to the satisfaction of a colonial government, and this decision making is often done at the expense of others.

I am a white woman from a middle-class family. I grew up well fed, sheltered and with little knowledge that the land I was free to explore had a long history of bloodshed and cruelty. As a white woman, I experience Canada with the lens of a settler, a person who has taken the land for granted, who is happy to enter a provincial park and remark on how “untouched” the nature is. I have been lucky to live in many provinces, from Nova Scotia, to Ontario, and currently British Columbia. When thinking of and interpreting the heritage of the land I might identify the plants and consider how they were/are used by First Nations peoples, I might consider this as I also wonder how much a tree would be worth to loggers, or whether I could sell some of the edible mushrooms I spotted on my hike. My point being that for far too long I had not acknowledged that land that I inhabit as belonging to someone else. I had not considered our method of conservation and protection as controversial, that the rightful owners of the territories I tread might view our attempts at maintaining nature, as we perceive it should be, as wrong.

It is so important as a nature interpreter to openly acknowledge the lens (and encompassing privileges) you were raised with and try to present information that expands the collective perspective in ways that are compassionate, fair, and factually accurate.

My question for you is: do you think that by ignoring your privilege you are more likely to inadvertently expose yourself to higher risk in nature?

Yesterday, Mom drove me to the pharmacy to pick up my meds. She was talking me to death the whole time. I couldn’t look more uninterested if I tried. I just wished she talked to me about anything other than complaining about Tony, his kids, her friends, her life, all of it. Just stop complaining. I don’t think she realized that I can only take so much in one day and that she seriously needs to find time for a therapist. Listening to people vent is exhausting and it takes up a lot of mental energy.

Speaking of which, Aiden texted me on Monday morning and said “I hope you read my apology, please don’t ever talk to me again.” I said something along the lines of “fuck off” but I don’t exactly remember. Now, he’s hanging out with Leo and Keagan and that crowd. Honestly, I could care less. I’m just glad he’s staying the fuck away from me. I can’t remember if I wrote about this already, but he like, graphically described how he wanted to off himself and sent to Kyle even after being begged to knock it the fuck off. What a sick, sick person.

Rivers Cuomo programmed an app called Weezify for his 3000 unreleased demos. What a guy. I think he has autism.

I overheard Mr. Beeson talking to a girl in our class about people who are denying that 9/11 happened. First of all, how the hell do you deny the existence of 9/11?? Some people are just straight up delusional. 

In the canopy, I overheard some boys talking abuot asking out a girl as a joke. I’d hate to be that girl. I they get run over lol

In math class, nobody could focus during work time. We kept quoting the “Freddy! You’re supposed to be on lockdown!” meme. I leaned over to another desk and said “Gregory! Don’t look! My fazballs are out!” Tayler, Zim, Saturn, Blade, and Tegan started laughing so hard. Mr.  Rassmussin was trying not to laugh under his mask, I could tell.

- Salieri is the Main antagonist in 'co3k: back to the SING!' along with his students, big D, And a few more antagonists (even cheddar man since he was considered as a villain on class of 3000 wiki)

- he and Sunny used to be together in the first years of westley school, but for some reason after they graduated, they stopped interacting with each other And then Salieri decided to broke up with Sunny without him knowing

- he probably has narcissistic personality disorder

- he calls his students "rats", but he sees his students as his kids that he raised just like how Sunny sees his students as his own kids

- many People mistake him for being a woman, probably because of the way he looks

Tom of Finland - Art is not just a wish

Art needs a master like Tom of Finland. There is something unique about his original and skilled art. When you see it, you just genuinely gravitate towards the idea and meaning it holds. But beyond the erotic, he reached what many artists wish: To express real feelings. This kind of art is a big honor regardless of the connection you have to the story it depicts. This kind of art is the dream of all artists. However, you need more than just wishes to have your name watermarked in generational works like this. You need talent, resilience, and consistency to make you master of an art. Such is the story of Touko Laaksonen popularly known as Tom of Finland. He carved his niche and became a master of art with his visual representation of men. Yes, more specialy gay men.

Early Beginnings

Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991), was born into a middle-class family in a town called Kaarina, Finland. Growing up, he fell in love with art and literature influenced by his home, a secondary building, since his parents were teachers. At the age of 19, he left his hometown for Helsinki to further his education. He enrolled in an art school and majored in advertising. That was the beginning of his drawing career. The first sets of homoerotic images he drew were just for personal pleasure. They were images of laborers that he witnessed while growing up. Unfortunately, he had to destroy these images before joining the army for World War II. However, joining the army made him love uniformed men, and this rekindled his gay art passion. He began to illustrate more homoerotic images of men. The new images were not those of laborers like before, they were images of men in uniform. After the war ended, he returned to art school and continued studying an advertisement. By this time, he had perfected the art of romantic images, and his works came out better than previous ones.

The Name “Tom of Finland”

With his drawing becoming more fantasizing and erotic, Touko’s friends encouraged him to start publishing them. In 1957, he summoned courage and submitted some of the drawings to a popular magazine in American under the alias name “Tom”. Upon publishing the work, the magazine editor, Bob Mizer, credited it “Tom of Finland”. Being a huge magazine, the images went viral, and so did the name “Tom of Finland”. The period after World War II was a turning point for gay men. This was more emphasized by gay artworks. The biker culture helped illustrate gay men as willful and dominant, just like heterosexual men. This debunked the stereotypical myth of gay men being epicene. If bikers would go under the origin of their masculine outfits, they'll identify and probably solve many personal problems. Touko’s biker images, leather illustrations, and other drawings were significant in passing this message across. American gay artist, George Quaintance also drew images that fueled this moment.

Tom of Finland; The Man

The best types of art are not just good looking ones; they are the ones with enough significance to change a narrative. Throughout his career, Touko proved this. At a time where homosexuals were facing all sorts of prejudices, he showed the world the real version of gay men they did not see. His images displayed gay men as loving, carefree, happy, and most importantly, normal people that they are. Even with all these, he still managed to portray the eroticism and fetishism of being a gay man. Touko’s art brought a lot of gay men out of their shells, and they became more appreciative and expressive of who they are. For this, his works were popular in a lot of countries and he enjoyed fame. In a career that spanned over 40 years, he worked with many gay models, releasing more than 3000 homoerotic illustrations.

Tom of Finland’s Big Break

Around the 1960s, Touko was already fully into the art business. He had quite several private bodies and magazines he was working with. However, his works in this period were being restricted due to a censorship law in America that forbade the public illustration of homosexual and pornographic images. Would my auto insurance increase if I hit a careless pedestrian jaywalking on a private property? Here are the case facts: - 1. Pedestrian was hit by my car while crossing a road located within a private property (a community college) in Brampton, Ontario (Canada) 2. I was in no position to clearly see the pedestrian in advance as the pedestrian suddenly appeared from behind the huge pile of snow on the side of the road. The pedestrian was walking from the parking lot and came onto the road from a blind spot. 3. I was driving at 30kms/hrs and saw the pedestrian just before I hit the pedestrian. 4. The pedestrian was NOT using the designated pedestrian crosswalk but was jaywalking on the road in attempt to cross the road. 5. I applied brakes as soon as I saw the pedestrian on my way but the pedestrian got hit by the time finished applying the breaks. I think my car came in contact with the pedestrian when the car had almost stopped possibly causing the minimum impact. Pedestrian seemed to be all right (not injured) but was slightly in pain due to the hit as my car hit her in the thigh. She did not fall down and was still able to walk (but was crying due to the shock) 6. I called 911 (both cops and ambulance) and they didnt charge me with offence. 7. The Police Officer concluded that it was not my fault after he confirmed with the witnesses that I actually tried to stop the car and that the pedestrian was jaywalking and not using the pedestrian walk for cross the road. The cop mentioned that I would have been charged if I were not driving on a private property. The building security also concluded that I was not at fault. 8. The police accident report makes no mention of my fault. 9. The paramedics concluded that pedestrian was not injured and was all right but they took her to the hospital anyway (for check up since the pedestrian seemed to have some pain in the thigh) My question is  Although, I was not ticketed or charged, would MY INSURANCE GO UP? I have heard that Insurance companies are notorious and would hold you responsible anyways or may hold you partially at fault?""

Tom of Finland - Art is not just a wish

Art needs a master like Tom of Finland. There is something unique about his original and skilled art. When you see it, you just genuinely gravitate towards the idea and meaning it holds. But beyond the erotic, he reached what many artists wish: To express real feelings. This kind of art is a big honor regardless of the connection you have to the story it depicts. This kind of art is the dream of all artists. However, you need more than just wishes to have your name watermarked in generational works like this. You need talent, resilience, and consistency to make you master of an art. Such is the story of Touko Laaksonen popularly known as Tom of Finland. He carved his niche and became a master of art with his visual representation of men. Yes, more specialy gay men.

Early Beginnings

Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991), was born into a middle-class family in a town called Kaarina, Finland. Growing up, he fell in love with art and literature influenced by his home, a secondary building, since his parents were teachers. At the age of 19, he left his hometown for Helsinki to further his education. He enrolled in an art school and majored in advertising. That was the beginning of his drawing career. The first sets of homoerotic images he drew were just for personal pleasure. They were images of laborers that he witnessed while growing up. Unfortunately, he had to destroy these images before joining the army for World War II. However, joining the army made him love uniformed men, and this rekindled his gay art passion. He began to illustrate more homoerotic images of men. The new images were not those of laborers like before, they were images of men in uniform. After the war ended, he returned to art school and continued studying an advertisement. By this time, he had perfected the art of romantic images, and his works came out better than previous ones.

The Name “Tom of Finland”

With his drawing becoming more fantasizing and erotic, Touko’s friends encouraged him to start publishing them. In 1957, he summoned courage and submitted some of the drawings to a popular magazine in American under the alias name “Tom”. Upon publishing the work, the magazine editor, Bob Mizer, credited it “Tom of Finland”. Being a huge magazine, the images went viral, and so did the name “Tom of Finland”. The period after World War II was a turning point for gay men. This was more emphasized by gay artworks. The biker culture helped illustrate gay men as willful and dominant, just like heterosexual men. This debunked the stereotypical myth of gay men being epicene. If bikers would go under the origin of their masculine outfits, they'll identify and probably solve many personal problems. Touko’s biker images, leather illustrations, and other drawings were significant in passing this message across. American gay artist, George Quaintance also drew images that fueled this moment.

Tom of Finland; The Man

The best types of art are not just good looking ones; they are the ones with enough significance to change a narrative. Throughout his career, Touko proved this. At a time where homosexuals were facing all sorts of prejudices, he showed the world the real version of gay men they did not see. His images displayed gay men as loving, carefree, happy, and most importantly, normal people that they are. Even with all these, he still managed to portray the eroticism and fetishism of being a gay man. Touko’s art brought a lot of gay men out of their shells, and they became more appreciative and expressive of who they are. For this, his works were popular in a lot of countries and he enjoyed fame. In a career that spanned over 40 years, he worked with many gay models, releasing more than 3000 homoerotic illustrations.

Tom of Finland’s Big Break

Around the 1960s, Touko was already fully into the art business. He had quite several private bodies and magazines he was working with. However, his works in this period were being restricted due to a censorship law in America that forbade the public illustration of homosexual and pornographic images. Although Touko was still creating homoerotic images, he could not get them published. Most of his published works in this period only displayed the athleticism and muscular figure of men. Even though this made him more flexible as an artist, it kept his homoerotic works away from public view. The big break came in 1962 when a court ruling envisaged that images of homosexual models are not abhorrent. This lifted the censorship ban on homoerotic illustrations, and Tom of Finland could publish his works. Touko enthused dexterity into new drawings, going as far as adding genitalia and making his illustrations more explicit.

Tom of Finland Exhibition Shows

In 1973 Tom of Finland had his first exhibition show at Hamburg, Germany. Five years later, he had his first American show, where he met Robert Mapplethorpe, a gay paparazzi. Robert helped him become more stylistic with his black and white images. At the end of Touko’s career, he was said to have participated in many exhibition shows.

More Drawings

Tom of Finland switched it up a gear in the 1970s. He created more emphatic images and added photorealism to his artistic talent. With this, he produced photograph-like images to make his works more realistic and expressive. He created various sexual fantasies that had an influence on the gay community. He was completely in control of the homoerotic art world.

Tom of Finland Foundation

Touko and his close friend Durk Dehner started the Tom of Finland Company in 1979. A few years on, they launched the Tom of Finland Foundation, aimed at helping other homoerotic gay artists through fundraising, public donations, and incomes from Tom of Finland’s collection house in Las Vegas. The house has the largest collection of erotic artworks in the world, with more than 1000 works of Touko and about 2000 works from other erotic artists.

Tom of Finland’s Death and Legacy  

In 1991, Tom of Finland lost his life to a lung disease known as emphysema. More than 27 years after his death, he is still regarded as the most influential erotic artist. Books such as “Tom of Finland XXL” and “The Art of Pleasure” have been published to tell the story of his artistic genius. Tom has a video biography to his name, and it’s title is “The Life and Art of Tom of Finland”. The video features interviews with Touko himself, talking about some of his works. There are also some erotic scenes coined from his artworks. The Tom of Finland biography is an award-winning documentary in Finland, and it is also widely accepted as an international film.
