Year of the Dragon Opening Round - Match 3
Tumblr media
(pictured: haaa, let's go one by one... a Wyvern Lord's mount from Awakening; a wild wyvern from Mystery of the Emblem; a Malig Knight's mount from Fates; a Dragonmaster's mount from Radiant Dawn; a Wyvern Knight's mount from Genealogy of the Holy War; a Wyvern Rider's mount from Blazing Blade; a Wyvern Rider's mount from Three Houses; a Wyvern Knight's mount from Engage; and a Wyvern Knight's mount from Sacred Stones.)
you can still see like one little bit of the arena backdrop, ain't that something and a half
associated lore under the cut
wyverns are a staple of Fire Emblem worlds, almost always figuring as the war mounts of the renowned Wyvern Riders. sometimes, there's substantial lore behind it; other times, yeah, there are just huge flying lizards that people ride into battle, what are you gonna do about it?
a point of note is that modern fantasy tends to distinguish "wyverns" from true dragons, characterizing them specifically as two-legged, broad-winged, pointy-tailed, serpentine beasts. this distinction is first of all ahistorical, but in the context of Fire Emblem it's also the subject of some translation oddity. in the japanese text, wyverns are usually referred to as "flying dragons", and are not otherwise radically distinguished from other dragons in most settings where they appear. this also accounts for them having largely appeared as regular four-legged dragons in older titles, although newer titles have increasingly designed them to look more like the ideal "wyvern" form. it's likely that the "wyvern" terminology stems from Blazing Blade being the first internationalized Fire Emblem game, and Treehouse not quite wrapping their heads around the apparent contradiction of "flying dragons" still appearing in Elibe after the Scouring was supposed to have driven away all the dragons.
archanean wyverns are one of the dragon clans that once reigned supreme over Archanea. none are known to have survived the degeneration of dragonkind, but feral specimens thread the skies from Dolhr to the Mamorthod Desert. of particular note is that humans enslaved by Dolhr have managed to tame the bestial wyverns in the island and use them as war mounts; this proved crucial to a successful slave rebellion which led to the formation of the kingdom of Macedon.
jugdrali wyverns inhabit the rocky wastelands at the southern side of the Thracian peninsula, and have become the feared steeds of the Thracian mercenaries. their existance is odd when considering that the Jugdral games take place in the same universe as Archanea, but before the degeneration of dragonkind earnestly kicked in, and the fact that dragonkind doesn't generally dwell in Jugdral is an important factor in its backstory. it is thusly hard to tell if Jugdral's wyverns are at all supposed to be of a kind with Archanea's.
elibean wyverns are the only dragons generally known to have remained in Elibe after the Scouring (although other exceptions abound, such as the denizens of Arcadia). they used to fly over the entire continent, but since the Scouring, they've been confined to Bern, where they're used as war mounts.
the "wyvern knight mount" that appears in Sacred Stones marks a very odd point in the flow of the idea of what exactly our here wyverns/flying dragons are supposed to be. the English version of the game never distinguishes it from the original wyverns, despite it looking blatantly different. in Japanese, though the class that rides them is called "Wyvern Knight" (unlike the usual Dragon Knight that tends to get localized as Wyvern Rider), they are in text referred to as a term that could be translated either as "snake dragon", or "evil dragon". this is, in fact, the same term that would appear in later games and be translated as "Fell Dragon"!
the malig knight mount is described as an "evil dragon" that the Malig Knight is able to tame, and the japanese name of that class, "Revenant Knight", implies that they are undead dragons. to the best of my knowledge, though, nothing else is established about these mounts, including the extent to which they are or are not of a kind with regular wyverns.
and now for a lightning round of continuities where the most depth that wyverns get is being associated with particular locations: magvel wyverns are typical of Grado; tellius wyverns are ridden by the senatorial guard of Begnion, although a substantial force has defected to Daein; ylissean wyverns are typical of Plegia, and Rosanne in Valm also houses a substantial wild wyvern population; nohrian wyverns are, well, typical of Nohr; and although fódlanite wyverns are not typical of any particular region, the neighboring Almyrans are considered masters of wyvern warfare, and have in particular refined the art of wyvernback archery.

Chapter 15 Part 4: Cormag Powers Up
At the top of the map, Eirika, Innes, and Saleh are dealing with these two wyverns, and some pegasus knights have also appeared.
Tumblr media
Once again, the pegasus knights are going to be hilariously weighed down by their steel lances. They only have like 5 con.
Tumblr media
For comparison, the wyvern knights also have steel lances, but they're at least working with 10 con, so they only lose 3 speed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eirika barely does any damage to the wyvern knights, so I send her to the left to start hitting an Axe Fighter.
Tumblr media
I put Innes on the castle entrance to give him some avoid for enemy phase, and he destroys this wyvern rider.
Tumblr media
Saleh one-rounds the other Axe Fighter, leaving the hurt one still there.
Tumblr media
Gerik attacks this Mercenary who was moving towards us through the desert.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And I have Ephraim hand off the Master Proof to Cormag so that he can reclass!
Tumblr media
His two options are Wyvernknight, just like Tana and Vanessa, or Dragonmaster.
Dragonmaster is actually pretty similar to Vanessa and Tana's second option, Falconknight, in the sense that it gives up the Wyvernknight's "Pierce" skill for gaining a second weapon type, swords.
Also, note how the Japanese differentiates between the two types of scaly fliers. Cormag's base class, Dragonknight, and the Dragonmaster class both have "dragon" in the name, and they are depicted as being four-legged animals. The Wyvernknight is the only one with "wyvern" in its name, and it appropriately only has 2 legs.
This distinction was lost in the English translation since all three classes have "wyvern" in the name. Cormag's base class is "Wyvern Rider", and his two options are "Wyvern Knight" and "Wyvern Lord".
Honestly, all three names end up sounding really similar in English, and there was this nice distinction between the different number of legs, so I don't know why things got translated the way they did.
<Lute voice> Also, technically a wyvern is a dragon-like creature with only two legs, though they are typically depicted with a barbed tail as well, so really, the naming is sub-optimal no matter which language you are looking at. </Lute voice>
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decide to do something different with Cormag and have him choose Dragonmaster. Hey, swords might be useful for him! He has high enough strength that the reduced might from swords won't affect him as much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of wyverns, Vanessa eliminates this guy with the Axe Breaker she still has.
Tumblr media
And even more Pegasus Knights appear!
Tumblr media
There are also reinforcements coming out of the two forts down here.
Tumblr media
One of them every turn will have a javelin.
Tumblr media
First thing I do up top is get rid of the last wyvern with Innes.
Tumblr media
Ephraim is making his way up towards Eirika, and he takes out some fool on the way.
Tumblr media
I move Eirika to the left since she took a bunch of damage the last couple of turns, and I move Tana and Cormag right to start fighting the Pegasus Knights.
Tumblr media
Moving Eirika that far left also allows me to heal her with Moulder.
Tumblr media
I arrange Franz to be in range of both Cavaliers, while Vanessa is only in range of the one with a Javelin. Lute is not in range because Vanessa is protecting her. ;)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up top, I also have Saleh buy a healing staff since he has this nice staff rank, but doesn't start with any staves in his inventory!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also really doesn't need to worry about being in range of the Pegasus Knights either.
Tumblr media
Also, lol at these Cavaliers attacking Franz. Nice zero damage, buddy.

fecipher twitter, 28-9-2020: "Narcian: Conniver of the Wyvern Generals"
[Card Showcase] Only the chosen elite of the Kingdom of Bern may join the ranks of the Wyvern Generals. Narcian is one of their number: a general who rides swiftly astride a wyvern. While he is genuinely highly talented, he is also cold-hearted and crafty by nature. He favors underhanded schemes with no quarter for women or children, and he will stab even his own allies in the back if it means saving his own skin. (Illust. Yoneko)
Card stats/skills:
B22-???R Narcian: Conniver of the Wyvern Generals Wyvern Lord/Cost4(3) Purple/Male/Sword/Flier/Dragon 60ATK/30SUPP/1RNG
"Oho... You think to take up arms against us? How amusing! So be it: we shall crush you utterly!"
Wyvern General's Runesword [ACT] [FLIP 1] Until the end of the turn, this unit acquires <Tome> and range 1-2.
Schemer's Smirk [ALWAYS] If this unit is in combat, support cards that possess a support skill fail to support the enemy.
Delphi Shield [TRIGGER] Each time that this unit is being attacked, until the end of the combat, the attacking unit loses "Anti-Fliers" and is unable to re-acquire it.

I’ve learned a lot of stuff about the main four Fire Emblem Cipher mascots since their presence in Fire Emblem Echoes was pretty momentary as they are actually developed characters. The four have been around since 2015. So I wanna share lore about them (not like any wikis ever have much info one them), from Frontier news issues, cards, and hopefully from the CD drama I will be getting in a while:
Tumblr media
Emma
Tumblr media
First mascot along with Shade. Is from Hoshido. Her and Shade feature in the interactive Cipher tutorial (english translation version)
A 13-year old apprentice Sky Knight who’s aiming to become a fully-fledged knight. She’s cheerful and energetic and ever eager to learn new things from Shade and the others, although she’s easily influenced.
She debuted as a Hoshidan Sky Knight and is always represented in some form of flying class. After promoting to Kinshi Knight, she then became a Falcon Knight and a Dark Flier before rotating between Falcon Knight and Dragonmaster.
Everyone is caring over her, like Shade teaching her manners and Yuzu warning her to not catch a cold during the colder months. Likes fluffy and cute things. Loses every Cipher game. Cries easily. “To all of you who’ve been reading our column to date, thank you tho thuch!” <- little kid talk.
“If you happen to find us in your booster packs, don't toss us away. Please kindly use us in your decks, alright? ❤”
A gamer, has April fools cards bringing that up.
Cipher End: Emma continues to train in order to become a full-fledged pegasus knight. Her tireless Cipher training also continues, but she has yet to show much improvement at the game.
Tumblr media
Shade
Tumblr media
Is from Nohr. A dark magic user known to some as the “Teacher of the Black Shadow”. She’s the alluring big sister type and is generally calm and collected, unless someone unknowingly pokes fun at her or tries to steal her thunder.
First appearing as a Dark Mage, she has also dabbled with various magic-based classes such as Sage, Bishop and Witch. Despite her affinity for magic, she has worked as a Maid for Nohr and a Falcon Knight over in Jugdral.
As a teacher, sometimes would make one of them stay with her to practice cipher card games til morning. Would get heated easily.
Considers Emma sunshine, and herself, the night. Uses 🖤 in her speech often in text. “Ufufuf~” giggle. Has April Fools cards.
A gamer, but plays older games. Does not own a super famicom when Emma asked her to tell about some older Fire Emblem games
Cipher End: Veteran mage that she is, Shade continues to teach the next generation. Many seeking to become almighty Cipher players have come to her, only to struggle bitterly under her tutelage - yet at the same time, to Emma and the others, she remains a nurturing guiding hand.
Yuzu
Tumblr media
Shows up in Issue 11. Is from Hoshido. Emma pointed out the plush kitty she had in her luggage and was flustered about it.
Joining in Series 3, Yuzu is a Hoshidan Samurai traveling the lands. She has trained in the arts of combat from an early age and is keen to prove her skills. While she’s well-versed in combat, she can be a little socially awkward.
After a brief stint as a Samurai, she has appeared in a variety of weapon-based classes such as Swordmaster, Hero, Sniper, Master Ninja and Dread Fighter. Her true calling appears to be the path of the sword though.
Can be quite shy, and has a reaction icon of not being in it at all. Doesn’t share about her interests easily. One time Emma had her plush cat and wanted it back.
During Issue 19 she asked Randal where her card was (the rest of them got new one’s during the time) and Randal said there wasn’t one and gave pity, she told him to shut up and not give comfort to a warrior.
Cipher End: Yuzu embarked on a journey of martial training, all the while following whispers of her brother’s whereabouts… although evidently, she does return from her travels from time to time, bearing souvenirs, to partake in Cipher matches with all of her friends.
Randal
Tumblr media
Showed up in Issue 19. Is from Elibe.
Joining in Series 5, Randal (Lando in JP) is a knight without a liege wandering from town to town and battlefield to battlefield. He refers to himself as a “bad” knight and is a bit of a wild card. Still, he’s very knowledgeable when he wants to be. Initially a Cavalier, Randal has also appeared in the guise of a Paladin or Great Knight.
Says he’s ridiculously older than the girls around but still glad to become friends.
He brought presents to them. Gave a teddy bear to Yuzu. Candy for Emma. A spellbook that Shade had been wanting to get.
Enjoys relaxing coloring books and singing. Uses “Oi”, “bloody”, “adios” in his speech.
Cipher End: Randal made a truly once-in-a-lifetime wager, only to go into hiding thereafter. Some rumors attest that he won, and that with that windfall he secured for himself a carefree life of quiet leisure in some southern land - others, that he met with a catastrophic loss, and was hence forced into labor in someplace.
Young Randal
Tumblr media
Randal from the past. Shows up in Issue 24 and pops up again time to time in later issues.
His appearance is specifically his 20 year younger self from the time of Blazing Sword. The Cipher cards were being rotated from Blinding Blade, to Blazing Sword, and back to Blinding Blade which regular old Randal is from.
When first seen, he points out his face, hair, and pink ribbon to show who he is. Emma said maybe he was a son of Randal and Shade suggested it’s Randal rejuvenated. Which made him mad and clarify he’s from the past. It becomes a running joke that every new mascot thinks he’s a son of Randal.
Emma brings up that the “time-traveling” could be due to the Boundless Chaos, which no one else knows what it is. This is mentioned by Randal in his base conversation in Echoes.
Old Randal does not acknowledge this time shift and says he has always been an old man.

Profile: Galen
Appearance: Generation 1 (Fire Emblem 4 Gen1 / Fire Emblem 7) Age: 16 years old
Tumblr media
(minus the faded Holy Mark for Elibe verse)
Generation 2 (FE4 Gen2 / FE5 / FE 6) Age: 34 (FE 4/5 G2) 36 (FE 6)
Tumblr media
FE 6/7 Bio: Class: Dragon Knight ( Wyvern Rider , Gen1) Dragonmaster (Wyvern Lord, Gen2)
A loyal dragon knight of Bern, although he has a bit of a reputation for being lazy. Rumored to be a bit of a troublemaker, his results on the battlefield are what keep him employed.
Although he is rather cordial towards Eliwood’s forces as a teenager, as an adult he has become jaded by the reality of war and , unless otherwise convinced, likely dies facing Roy’s army.
FE 4/5 Bio: Class: Dragon Rider (Gen1) Dragonmaster (Wyvern Lord, Gen2)
An young, idealistic and loyal dragon rider of Thracia, Galen somewhat idolizes King Trabant and his efforts to improve / save Thracia from their state of poverty. Together with his lover they join the flight of riders that ambush Cuan and Ethlin in what will later be known as the Yied Massacre. As they fly on to attack Sigurd’s army they are quickly struck down by Levin.
Here he should have been fated to die, but an older merchant woman stumbles upon Galen and two of his companions and takes them back to her home, impartial to their part in the war. In the end Galen is the only one of the group to not succumb to his wounds and after a long recovery period eventually makes his way back to Thracia.
By Celice’s time he has seen a couple promotions in rank and serves dutifully as a general in the army. Upon encountering Leaf (princeoflenster) and mistaking the disguised prince for a Thracian citizen he tries to lend him his aid.
Although he has started to question Thracia’s place in the war and whether it will solve their crisis he is not willing to risk the country’s reputation by defying the empire. It isn’t until the Princess Altenna defects that he begins to reconsider his own actions. In the end, he decides to act upon what he believes to be best for Thracia’s future...

I’ve also done that tally of popularity per class, so I might as well post that before I finally go tf to sleep
disclaimers on names and etc. from the previous post still apply
for the Awakening doppelgangers in Fates: Owain, Inigo, and Severa had their votes counted in total with their counterparts, and Owain was put in the class category that he got the most votes as; Caeldori, Asugi and Rhajat were regularly included as separate entities, but for each category that they qualified for, the character who would’ve made #10 it in their absence is also noted
=POPULARITY RANKING OF CLASS TYPES (based on the Top 10s; might do the actual full tally.... sometime, maybe) -#1: Lords (270,156) -#2: Mercenaries (86,616) -#3: Dark Magi (70,018) -#4: Myrmidons (69,818) -#5: Thieves (55,770) -#6: Pegasus Riders (50,092) -#7: Dragon/Wyvern Riders (48,863) -#8: Anima Magi (47,374) -#9: Armors and Soldiers (40,665) -#10: Riding Healers (40,539) -#11: Clerics and Light Magi (38,567) -#12: Melee Cavalry (36,024) -#13: Dragon Transformation (34,714) -#14: Archers (30,730) -#15: Beast Transformation (30,275) -#16: Fighters and Bandits (29,038) -#17: Refresh (27,101) -#18: Trainees (19,365)
