Discussions on 3D Techniques
I spent a long while having a kind of crash-course in 3D work with Alan today. I found it very informative, and felt like it’s opened up a lot of new possibilities that I’d be interested in trying. I haven’t really ever thought about developing work this way beyond a passive general interest, but it’s quite exciting to be trying so many new things!
Clay
This is something I think I will be using as material for developments. When thinking of creating a 3D object, it’s very easy for the first thing you imagine to be physically sculpting something. Thus, we went through the different materials I could use to sculpt a 3D response to my objects.
Earthenware - A secondary clay (contains impure sediment) that is soft and easy to work with. Usually a warm, reddish brown due to high levels of iron oxide, it is more porous and fragile than other types of clay when fired.  Grog (usually ground-up material such as fired ceramics or bricks) can be added to change the properties of the clay, such as strengthening it, adding texture, or reducing the likelihood of cracks forming whilst it is being fired. It requires a lower firing temperature and cannot withstand the same firing temperatures as stoneware and porcelain due to lacking similar glass-forming properties that allows the clay to become vitrified (meaning glass-like). Despite this, it can still be glazed, which hardens into a solid layer upon a second firing, allowing it to take on a non-porous form.
Stoneware - Also a secondary clay, but a denser, more resistant, and less porous form of clay compared to earthenware. The colour of stoneware often ranges from pale grey to deep grey, which usually lightens with firing. Grog can also be added to this clay for reinforcement. It is easy to use, with a wide range of practical applications, from dinnerware, to cooking pots, to liquid vessels such as cups and vases. Typically, stoneware contains a mixture of feldspar, which reduces the melting point of glass-forming materials, and quartz, which contains a high amount of silica required for fusing into glass. Some types of stoneware can contain kaolin, which is the main ingredient in porcelain. Once fired, stoneware can range from vitreous to semi-vitreous (semi-porous), making it more resistant than earthenware. It also fires at higher temperatures, typically from a mid to high fire range, or between cone 4 - 10 (seen below).

Porcelain - A more refined, purer form of clay. China clay, or kaolin clay, is a very pure, white clay that has been used for almost ten thousand years. Porcelain is normally fired at very high temperatures, most often cone 9 or above, and has the lowest porosity of the materials mentioned. Despite its often delicate and occasionally translucent appearance, it is very dense and durable, resistant to breaks and surface chips. For its benefits, porcelain clay is known for being harder to work with, as it dries out or becomes waterlogged easily, and it is difficult to sculpt porcelain clay while retaining its shape as it has a tendency to slump or collapse.
It’s given me a lot to think about!
