hamilton hair redesigns/headcanons
theatre is a beautiful but limited medium. for all that differences in hair are important in hamilton, the actual changes are the equivalent of tiktokers putting a towel on their head.
so here are my ideas for how hamilton characters would style their hair (in a modern au I suppose).
lafayette: cornrows that go into long braids so he can tie his hair up. when it's too short for a ponytail he gets beads at the bottom and greatly enjoys clicking and clacking w every step.
mulligan: close cropped hair that he dyes into funky patterns. (examples)
peggy: microbraids‼️
eliza: a bob near the beginning of the story, grows it out during act 1, ties it up in act 2. then she cuts it again after burn
angelica: jumbo box braids, for when she lives in america/in act 1.
alexander: he tried curtain bangs before submitting to the receding hairline. lost a bet in uni and dyed his hair red; one of the worst decisions of his life (which is saying a lot!!)
bonus burr: Bald. can't change that sorry. it's professional and personality-less, yet common enough that he only stands out compared to the expressively styled revolutionaries. perfect, thematically.
if there's anyone i haven't mentioned its cuz i like their hair as it is in the play/don't have anything to add 😌

like I understand the urge to have him be v connected with la croix, to miss it and think of it often. but looking at how alexander describes his childhood home there's no way he misses it.
firstly the real hamilton never went back to the caribbean. he got out and stayed out. secondly in hurricane the lyrics "I wrote my way out of hell" show that bro did not think highly of la croix. lastly he generally is v patriotic for the usa. how else do u end up as a founding father.
this leads me to think that in a modern au alex would be the type to believe in the american dream, or some version of it. firmly sure that as long as he can get out of his third world homeland his life will improve. esp if he joins the army (I'm not american but from what I see you'd have to be like. blinded by patriotism and ur own debt to even consider enlisting) (for context when I say modern au I mean 2000s-2010s. he'd be a millennial sorry.)
imo ham would say without hesitation that he's american. he'd focus all language learning energy on improving his already prodigal english, and would follow every white trend. only when he's a lot older would he try to reconnect with his origins. like he'd try learning creole again (maybe to teach phillip?) with great difficulty. its just that he has no connection to that place any more, and every connection to nyc and the us. he shed the pain of his childhood and leapt into a new life, at the cost of his heritage. and ion think hamilton even cares abt losing that.
tldr hamilton would not talk dirty in french he spent all his language points on english. also imo he hated la croix and never wants to go back ever.
modern au hamilton would be such a yo sabo kid
