The curtains opened, and sunlight poured into the room.

One by one, Islanders started to wake up… or wake someone else up.

Some grumbled, pulling pillows over their heads. Others were already half-dressed, dragging themselves toward the bathroom in slow, sleepy silence. Hair was a mess, dried slob, voices low and raspy with that early-morning grogginess.

Sasha rose up from the bed with a big bright smile with messy hair while glancing at all of the sleepy bodies move slowly across the huge bed room.

“Good morning everyone!!” She drug out softly- in which she either got a response or a hum, before getting out of the bed with a big stretch

Across the room, Coco sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes. Glancing over at onyankopon who was still sleeping under a pillow.

“Get up sleepy head.” She said softly while rubbing his arm in a way to wake up him.

But in return all she got was a grumble from him which made her let out a little giggle.

Taking a deep breath Onyankopon then takes the pillow off of his face before sitting up slowly.

Coco did nothing but watched his movements the whole time before standing up to stretch.

“You ok?” She asks him while gathering her phone and water bottle.

“Yea-Just tired” Onyankopon said in a deep raspy voice while rubbing his hands up and down his face to wake himself up more.

“Ok, just making sure- I’ll see you in a few” Coco said while making her way to the glam room.

Sitting at the vanity Coco then styles her hair into a half up half down before doing her make up.

“So how was everyone’s first night?” She asked the girls while putting on Concealer.

“Mines was good even though Connie wanted to cuddle- I just feel like it’s the first night, why are we cuddling?” Mikasa said confusedly while putting on primer, looking at the girls do their own makeup.

“Oh damn and here I was wanting to cuddle but wanted to respect Eren’s personal space.” Sasha says while laughing and grabbing her makeup brush.

Laughing at them while fixing her bikini “ Oh-well you would’ve loved sleeping with Damson because he was the one who asked to cuddle.” Annie says laughing at Sasha’s reaction.

Knock. Knock

"Are y'all dressed?"

The girls hear a deep voice before looking at each other to make sure before answering.

"Yes we're dressed" Annie answers while watching the door to see who it is. As the door opens a muscular chest appears along with a head full of twist.

"Good morning yall-here Coco i make you some breakfast"

Onyankopon says while placing the plate full of food down in front of her.

"Aww thank you onyankopon" Coco says with a big smile before giving him a hug.

"You're welcome" he says hugging her back before making his way out of the glam room.

Silence fills the room before it erupts into a bunch of awes and squeals.

"That is so sweet of him" Isabella says looking at Coco with a big smile.

"I know right and it's good too" she says with a surprised look.

After Coco gets done getting dressed into her red and white checkered bikini with her red coach slides.

Her brown skin is looks oily and shines with every movement she makes as she steps down the white staircase. The villa was alive with a lazy, sun-soaked kind of energy. The boys were spread across the daybeds, sunglasses on, muscles out, talking about who made their couple the best breakfast.

Mikasa was perched on the edge of the pool with her feet dangling in, laughing with Annie as they talked about something.

She made her way toward the edge of the pool and sat down next to Mikasa, letting out a small sigh "Why does it feel like we've been here forever but it's only been like... a day?"she says.

"I know right it's crazy" Annie says with a small laugh

Down by the work out area, Onyankopon, Damson and Chad all sat down drinking water after they had a small morning workout session.

"So Onyankopon what do you think about Coco so far" Chad says while sitting down on the floor.

Glancing over at Coco, Onyankopon lets out a small breath "Honestly she’s great, she's really sweet- funny and beautiful. I'd love to keep getting to know her-oh and yall can just call me Ony." He lets out while placing his shades on his face.

Nodding his head Chad then looks over at Coco and the rest of the girls who are grouped up by the pool.

"She really is beautiful- all of them are, it's crazy" he says shaking his head while smiling.

"Naw man for real, I knew we would be here with some fine women but I wasn't expecting it to be this crazy" Damson says as they all laugh.

Drinking some water Chad then looks over at them both "So yall wouldn't mind if I had a chat with them, right?" he asks then with curiosity.

Both Ony and Damson shakes their heads in sync "No man of course not, I mean-we just got here yesterday, and the point of this is to find connections" Ony says while looking at Chad.

Instead of verbally agreeing Chad just nods his head as the three men watches the women sit by the pool.

As the afternoon rolled on, little flirtations sparked. Mikasa and Eren wandered toward the dock, playfully arguing over who made the better smoothy. Sasha and Connie having a ping pong match like their were competing in the Olympics as Coco sat on the couch watching them.

Onyankopon came and sat beside her with a small smile " Was your breakfast good?" he asks while analyzing her features.

"Yess, It was so good-thank you again" Coco said while looking back at him with a bigger smile.

He chuckled, leaning back. "Your welcome ma, You look good today."

Smirking at his complement "Thank you and you do too" she says while eyeing him up and down.

"So, have you thought about all the people you're going to chat with?” Onyankopon asks now glancing over at Connie and Sasha who were still having an intense ping pong match.

"Yes actually, I think I'll pull Chad and Damson- they seem like really nice guys" Coco says while looking at Chad who is sitting down on one of the bean bag chairs.

"What about you?" Coco asks now looking back at Onyankopon.

Rubbing his beard in thought as he hummed he then replied "Isabella and Sasha, but i think I'll just pull all of you just to get my opinions out there.”

Nodding her head in an agreement, before she could get a word out.

there was a noise coming from her phone.

Ding

Grabbing her phone fastly she then opens it before yelling "I GOT A TEXT!" as she glances around the villa to see if everyone was listening.

Reading out loudly the text says

"Islanders, it's time to spice things up with your very first challenge! Get ready for a sizzling game of Truth or Dare. 👀🔥#NoSecretsInTheVilla #DareToPlay"

Glancing over at the boys who were dapping each other up, laughing Coco then starts to make her way upstairs to get ready along with rest of the girls.

"Not truth or dare already!" Sasha shrieked while looking back and forth between two dresses.

"Ohhh- we're about to find out who's a saint and who's a little freaky freak," Isabella grinned, already reaching for her setting spray.

Confessional-Isabella

“Im so ready for this challenge yall dont even know!! And just know bella’s gonna turn uppp!” she’s says loudly to the camera while laughing at the producers facial expressions.

Laughing at them Coco begins to go over her makeup and make it look little more dramatic.

The girls scurried, suddenly in turbo mode. Dresses zipped, lashes fluffed, perfume spritzed like it was a competitive sport.

The boys stood gathered at the foot of the staircase, all in their fresh fits-button-downs, rings, and cologne thick enough to knock someone out. They were chatting, laughing, tossing jokes, but every now and then one would glance up toward the landing, waiting.

Then, the soft click of heels echoed from above.

First to appear was Coco, coming down the stairs like she owned the villa. A sleek white bodycon dress hugged her curves with 3 big slits that are tied at that top, showed her belly ring, edges laid, and the most beautiful smelling perfume.

Behind her came Isabella, in a yellow sparkly dress that shined under the lights, followed by Mikasa, Annie, and Sasha-each meeting their man at the bottom on the stairs.

"Goddamn..." muttered Onyankopon under his breath, looking down at Coco as she just smiles back at him with a giggle.

Confessional-Onyankopon

“I feel like the whole time that I’m here- all thats going to come out of my mouth is “damn, shit, your so beautiful”- because if Coco isn’t a walking angel in this villa…then I don’t know who is” onyankopon says to the camera while smirking.

They all made their way out-hands on backs, fingers intertwined, or awkwardly walking side by side if the vibe was still giving "I don't know you like that."

Once everyone made it to the long table, Connie then raised his glass first.

"To day one. To surviving the awkward bits, serving looks, and hopefully... not embarrassing ourselves on national TV," he said, with a laugh.

Everyone clinked glasses-metallic tapping, laughter, and a few flirty side-eyes exchanged across the table.

Then-DING!

Heads snapped to the sound.

This time it was Annie.

She grabbed her phone dramatically.

"I GOT A TEXT!" she shrieked, making everyone groan and scream at once.

"Islanders! It's time to head to the campfire for your first challenge. Truth or Dare. Let's see what secrets come out when the heat is turned up.🔥 #SpillOrSizzle. #KissAndTell #NoBackingOut"

"Ohhh shiiit," Eren laughed, grabbing his drink. "Game on, baby."

Everyone got up, buzzing with nervous energy and excitement. As they walked toward the glowing fire pit, the sun had already dipped, and soft ambient lights bathed the villa in a romantic glow-with just enough shadows to make trouble seem inevitable.

They sat on the long plush outdoor sofas, the flames flickering and drinks in hand.

And just like that, the first night of real chaos was about to begin.

Wild N Out

A/N: A request for the amazing and patient @queenbutterfly2018 . This was a challenge that I did not expect but had a lot of fun with. I hope you enjoy! If it isn’t what you want, let me know and we’ll take another stab at it. 

“Wild’n, wild’n...”

Chadwick stood in the hallway of the downtown Los Angeles venue, bouncing on his toes to shake some of his anxious energy away. When he got an invite to appear on the improv comedy show hosted by Nick Cannon, he allowed his wife to pressure him into accepting the invitation against his better judgment. To Chadwick, sketch comedy wasn’t his idea of a good time. He didn’t mind watching live during a date night with CoCo, or even spending hours of mindless time watch the popular television show, but participating was a different beast.

“I got somebody that’s gon’ try and take my comedy crown. You seen him be Jackie Robinson, James Brown, T’Challa and probably ya uncle. Tonight, he’s the Captain of the Black Squad. Y’all know him, Chadwick Boseman!”

Taking one last deep breath, Chadwick started a slow trot to the stage. In the short time beneath the bright lights, he noticed that the person responsible for his appearance on the show was suddenly absent from her front row seat. There was no time to process Tasha’s absence before he was pulled into a dap and hug by Nick Cannon.

“Now I know you like the Master Actor out here these days, but we've never seen you in a comedy role. You think you can hang tonight.”

Chadwick scoffed and smiled, “C’mon man. I’m me.”

“Alright, alright,” Nick laughed in the midst of the oohs and ahhs from the crown. “See, I knew you were coming, so I made sure the Red Squad was stacked. We had to bring out the big guns.”

“Hopefully it’s a ghostwriter. I’ve seen you in the wild style and it ain’t nice.”

“It’s terrible,” Emmanuel Hudson yelled from across the stage. “Worst shit I ever heard. You should throw all of your studio equipment in the middle of the ocean. Then jump in behind it. And drown.”

A chorus of laughter erupted in the building, becoming contagious as Chadwick let go of a few chuckles and some of his nerves.”

“Anyway,” Nick interrupted. “For the first time in Wild N Out history, I’m giving up my captain’s seat to somebody that I know can beat you. She told me to call her the HBIC and the B stands for Boseman. We got your lady in the house, Tashaaaa Boseman!”

With “Last Time That I Checc’d,” playing as her walk out music, CoCo confidently strolled onto the stage with a smug smile and a mischievous grin on her face. She’d been intentionally quiet about her invitation to appear being the catalyst behind her working double time to convince her husband to step out of his comfort zone.

Once Chadwick was over the shock of seeing Tasha step through the tunnel, his eyes flickered with a competitive drive.

“Hey, baby,” Tasha sultry voice spoke into the microphone. “You ready for me to whoop that ass in front of all these people?”

“I hear you talking big shit. Just don’t be surprised when I have on my championship belt in the bedroom tonight, Co.”

After sharing a friendly kiss, Chadwick and Tasha turned to join their respective teams and listen to the instructions for the first game.

“Alright, the name of the game is Got Damned,” Emmanuel started, imitating an old school referee. Even though they were on opposite teams, Chad and CoCo caught eyes and burst into giggles at the act.

A member of each team was called to the center of the stage to participate in an old fashioned game of the dozens. By the middle of the game, Chadwick was in tears from the sheer absurdity of the jokes. Tasha wanted in on the action.

“Give me Tasha! Give me Justina!”

The crowd’s cheers became lost in the background as Tasha stepped forward and grinned from ear to ear.

“Girl, if you don’t get your 'Thank you for being a friend,' Golden Girls old ass outta here,” Justina started.

“I know you ain’t talking with your big back, Clay Matthews from the Packers built ass.”

“If I’m built like Clay Matthews then you must be Spock with them gahdamn Star Trek ass ears.”

Tasha took the joke like a pro while assessing the competition. “Sis, if you don’t get your Frank Sinatra’s face, Khloe Kardashian’s old body having ass outta here!”

When Justine opened her mouth to counter, her speech faltered, causing her to stutter. The misstep garnered a reaction from the audience and the cast on the stage.

“You’re out!” Emmanuel’s declaration came with a gesture for Justine to rejoin her team a bell indicating that the red squad had received the point.

“DJ D-Wreck, who won that game, man?”

“It was close but, it looks like the Red Squad got that one!”

Tasha felt a surge of pride, knowing that she contributed to the win. Her pride matched Chadwick, who tried to keep his admiration lowkey.

If anyone were to ask him, his wife was everything light and fun in their relationship. She had the better jokes, was voted best song singer by the kids and always became the life of the party when they would have their famous monthly gatherings. If circumstances were different and they weren’t on different teams, he’d be congratulating her on her went. Unfortunately, he was forced to defeat his wife on national television. He could apologize for the beatdown later.

Nick continued to fly through games, some that neither Tasha or Chadwick felt qualified to participate. They were content to bobbing their heads along with the rap portions or adding a couple of chuckles to the mesh with the audiences’ laughter. In others, like Plead the Fifth, the Black Squad took the lead when Tasha and Chadwick were pitted against each other.

“Mrs. Boseman. I hear your nickname is CoCo. Can I call you CoCo,” Conceited asked.

“Never in your life, sweetheart, but continue.”

“Oh-kay! I just have one question. On a scale of 1 to 10… how much does Chadwick...hate working with those white people at Marvel. We’ve seen the pictures! How much does he hate it, Tasha!”

Chadwick looked at his wife’s eyes shut, and her lips become tucked into her mouth as she tried to stifle a laugh, half hoping she wouldn’t answer for a variety of reasons.

“Oh my God,” Tasha groaned while “answer him” chants grew in intensity. “I...plead the fifth.”

When the next segment was introduced, the couple made it a point to try and interact with their respective teams.

“ATL makes some noise! We back like we never left. It’s been a wild night all because of Ms. Tashaaaa.”

CoCo made sure to make an animated face in the camera before waving to the crowd.

“Damn, you just gon’ act like I ain’t playing? I mean, my team is winning.”

“Not for long! I’m coming for your ass tonight,” Tasha hollered across the stage.

“Is that a promise?” Chadwick’s suggestive comment didn’t go unnoticed by Tasha or the crowd, earning a mixed back of reactions and a subtle wink from his wife.

“Okay, okay. Sound like y’all are ready for the next game. What you got for us D-Wreck?”

“This next one is called Let Me Holla. We’ll bring a Wild N Out girl to the stage, and each team takes turns trying to holla at her. Good pick up lines get a bell; bad ones get a buzzer. Let’s get a Wild N Out girl to the stage?”

As the pretty blonde made her way into the spotlight, both Chadwick and Tasha made it a point to turn the friendly competition up a notch. Both teams went back and forth with pick-up lines varying from hilariously innocent to suggestive and downright raunchy. After B. Simone received a buzzer on the Black Squad, the scores were even, leaving the door wide open for a win.

Chico Bean was next to step to the young lady. “Hey, baby, do you have sex with men you meet the first night?”

“Uh...no?”

“Good, then I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Tasha could feel her face getting sore from laughter that halted the moment the noise from D-Wreck’s bell turned into excited cheers from the crowd. Looking over, she was shocked to see Chadwick swagging his way to woman on stage. In a rush of adrenaline, Tasha dashed to join him on stage, sandwiching the woman between them.

Neither Tasha or Chadwick spoke. Instead, they took turns pointing between each other and the young woman while smiling. When that didn’t work, Chadwick reached across to pull Tasha into a kiss before pulling away and resuming the silent charade. Their display of affection and its not so hidden meaning made the blonde’s face flush as she bit her lip. Finally, she linked arms with both of her “suitors” and began to walk off stage, giving both teams a bell and ending the game.

Nick Cannon’s face, a mix of shock and intrigue, was priceless as he stepped on stage to mediate as Tasha and Chadwick exchanged a high five and returned to their respective teams.

“We wild’n out for real, huh? That one was too close to call, D-Wreck. Tell us who won.”

“Even with the double bell, the Red Squad had the most luck with the ladies. Give it up for them!”

“Aye, we all tied up around here, and we’re coming back to settle it the Wild Style battle. So, sit ya ass down because we’re coming right back!”

Tasha felt her stomach churn at the mention of the final battle. There was a laundry list of things she didn’t consider herself good at, and freestyle rapping was at the top. A quick break for some crowd shenanigans gave Chadwick time to break away from his group and check on CoCo.

“You good,” he asked as he handed her a bottle of water and bumped her shoulder. “Ready for this to be over as much as I am?”

“If I could end it right here and not have to rap in front of all these people, I’d gladly take my win and leave.”

“Oh, so you think you can just beat me without a fight, Cookie. Nuh uh! We play all the way through in this household.”

“But I can’t rap!”

“And I can’t do improv,” he laughed. “But I did that stupid props game and ended up winning. I got out of my comfort zone, and now it’s your turn.” A quick signal from a producer on set let the couple know that it was time to split up and wrap the taping, prompting Chadwick to end the conversation. “Get on out there Champ. If I lose, I want it to be because you beat me. Got it?”

His reassuring smile came with an extended fist which CoCo bumped to complete the gesture. “I got it. But if I suck, we never speak of it again.”

“Now you know damn well I can’t do that.”

She didn’t have time to respond before Nick was returning from the planned television break and introducing the Wild Style battle. Though nervous, CoCo tried to push all thoughts of possible humiliation from her mind and focus on coming up with rhyming words while others around her rapped. With the number of people on stage, she hoped she’d easily be looked over. Most hosts that weren’t known musicians or comedians tended to skip out on participating even if bated. Tasha hoped she could do the same.

“Aye, Tasha.” The mention of her name made her body still with fear before settling back into reality. “Bring that ass here, girl!”

CoCo’s mind pinged with all of the ways being called out by resident funny guy, DC Young Fly, could turn into a disaster. He was known for not only being outlandish in his delivery but also being good at his craft. She’d watched him completely eviscerate opponents all night and joining in on a laugh here and there. Now, she was on the receiving end and terrified of what was coming.

She didn’t move from the back of the pack under her own power. All she felt was several hands pushing her forward as she willed her facial expressions to morph into something that screamed confidence.

“Now Ms. Tasha, I know you old but I still think you groovy, so when are you gon’ stop fucking this nigga that gets his ass whooped in all his movies?”

Chadwick took the joke in stride with a cool laugh and shook his head. With the end of the game drawing closer, he didn’t care what went on as long as it was on its way to being over. Instead, he chose to give Tasha a subtle nod for encouragement.

Tasha had two options. She could laugh and return to the crowd without a rebuttal or take a stab at defending her man. CoCo chose the latter. Grabbing the mic, she took a deep breath and prepared to give her first televised freestyle a fair shot.

“DC, I’ll tell you a secret, real quick, don’t no woman want a man built like a used toothpick.”

The reaction to her response was instantaneous laughter from both teams and the audience. D-Wreck rewarded her effort with a quick bell before the battle progressed to an old school showdown between Chico and Karlous. She was excited and proud at the same time as she moved back to the side to make room in the center of the group. Chadwick was happy for her too, giving her a subtle wink and nod from across the room.

By the end of the battle, the bells and buzzers had become so mixed in everyone’s heads that no one was aware of the score until Nick called over to the DJ booth for an official tally.

“I got a feeling I get to keep my comedy belt this time, D-Wreck, but who won that game, man?”

“That battle was crazy...but the Black Squad got more bells in the end for the win!”

Chadwick smiled as he was presented with the gold plated souvenir and led to the spot beside Nick Cannon to end the show.

Tasha smiled as Chadwick pulled her to his side and handed her the mic. “Let the record reflect that I technically won too because what’s his is mine,” she laughed.

“There it is! Let’s get to it. Everybody get out ya seats, turn your TV up and make some noise for Lil Baby!”

A/N: This was supposed to be for Father’s Day but I’m lazy. Enjoy. 

Pots clanging in the comfy Southern kitchen on Sunday afternoon welcomed the excitement of familiar visitors and the time set aside to eat, drink and be merry. Taking a break from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles to enjoy the holidays elsewhere, Tasha and Chadwick were on stop number two of their Christmas tour to visit his parents.

“Tasha, honey, pass me that salt and pepper next to you,” Mrs. Boseman requested from across the kitchen.

CoCo gladly complied as she wiped the sweat from her brow. After exchanging pleasantries, she went back to gathering ingredients for her assigned side dish.

For late December the weather in South Carolina was unusually warm, but not warm enough to stir up the heat surrounding Tasha. Her stomach churned with the uneasy shake of her breakfast and she could feel her mouth prepare for a reaction.

“You okay over there,” Mrs. Boseman asked, taking note of the slight tremor in Tasha’s hands.

“Honestly, I don’t know. One minute I’m fine and the next I feel like I might have a stomach virus. It’s been on and off for days.”

“I have some medicine in one of these cabinets if you need it. Let me grab it for you.”

Lifting the hand that wasn’t bracing her body against the counter, Tasha waved her mother-in-law off, “No, no. I’m fine. I just...can I get a glass of water?”

She received a slow, concerned nod in response before the woman of the house set off to fulfill the request.

The sound of footsteps coming in their direction forced her to shake the feeling and put on her best face.

Chadwick and his father rounded the corner engrossed in conversation before greeting their spouses. Without missing a beat, he went straight to Tasha to pull her into a hug and a short kiss.

“You look good, girl. Is this makeup?”

“Nope, still my sweaty face from the run earlier,” she laughed. “The one I beat you in might I add.”

“Maybe I just like runnin’ behind you.”

“Yeah right.” Their brief moment of laughter quickly became a one-sided affair when CoCo looked over her husband’s shoulder to find her in-laws conversing about something clearly related to her.

There was little time to read their lips as Chadwick ended his kissing display to resume the conversation.

“I’m going with my daddy to grab some stuff at the hardware store. Need anything while we’re out? We shouldn’t be gone long.”

“Don’t rush, babe. I’ll be here when you get back.”

“Promise?” Tasha answered with a nod as she extended her pinky for Chadwick to grab. Following tradition, he kissed her wedding ring before kissing her forehead. “See you later, baby. Can’t wait to taste that mac and cheese.”

Chadwick’s dirty joke wasn’t lost on Tasha, leading to an exaggerated eye roll while he kissed his mother’s cheek. The longer that the group prolonged their goodbyes, the harder the battle to keep her breakfast down became.

She hardly noticed the door close or Mrs. Boseman’s question in the fog of her thoughts. All she could focus on was the nauseating odor of cheddar cheese mixing with milk to form one horrible combination.

“Tasha, are you-”

“Oh my God. I need to go!”

In a flurry of actions, CoCo found herself face to face with the bottom of the downstairs toilet emptying the two egg breakfast she consumed earlier in the day. Tears stung the brim her eyes from the force of regurgitation and frustration. A knock at the door frightened her out of a series of dark thoughts and back into the present moment.

“I-I’m fine. It must’ve been the run that upset my stomach. I’ll be right out.”

“Take your time, honey. You want that medicine now?”

Tasha sniffled and rubbed at her tears with the sleeve of her warmup jacket, “Yes, ma’am. Thank you.”

Mrs. Boseman smiled at the formality and turned to walk away until a thought popped into her head.

“Tasha, have you had your cycle?”

“You mean like...my menstrual? I don’t…” Her voice trailed off as she pulled her cell phone from her jacket pocket to open her tracker app. She wasn’t a stranger to irregular cycles, but she’d never spent more than two weeks wondering when she would begin her monthly process.

Tasha’s eyes grew wide and then blurry as realization began to set in. Swinging the door open, she came face to face with Mrs. Boseman who stood with sympathetic eyes.

“Am I...?”

“You won’t know until you take a test, sweetie. Do you want me to go with you?”

Words became locked in Tasha’s throat behind a short gasp for air to stop a sob from escaping. She assumed she would have more time to plan for this moment, time to feel some other emotion besides the fear running rampant in her body. Now, with the time separating her from Chadwick’s return dwindling, she was forced to confront an unexpected turn of events.

With the earlier breakdown behind her, Tasha felt prepared to face Sunday’s dinner. Conversation ebbed and flowed between serious topics and lighthearted banter as relatives from the neighborhood gathered around the table to share their weekly meal and greet the newlyweds for the first time since their wedding.

“Whoo, Tasha, this is the second best macaroni and cheese I’ve had in my life,” an aunt praised from across the table.

“And whose is the first,” Chadwick questioned.

“Mine of course. But don’t get me to braggin’.” The table erupted in a chorus of laughs louder than all the rest. “Don’t mind me. I’m glad to see a young woman that still cooks. Somebody’s gotta feed my great nieces and nephews.”

“Slow down there, auntie. Ain’t no babies in the house yet. We haven’t even been married for a year!”

Tasha shifted in her seat at the mention of children, preferring to keep her head down to avoid detection. Mrs. Boseman could sense her daughter-in-law’s change in behavior and flashed her a smile across the room.

“Boy, you’ve been married since the day you brought Miss CoCo over here. Now, when can we expect some kids runnin’ around here?”

“Two years at least. We have a lot we need to get done first, right baby? T, you heard me?”

Lost in her thoughts, Tasha missed the mention of her name until her husband gripped her knee underneath the table. “Huh? Oh, yeah, sure! No babies yet,” she stammered. “You finished with this plate? Great!”

She didn’t wait on a response before she scrambled to gather plates and utensils and scramble into the kitchen.

“Calm down, T, shit,” Tasha whispered to herself during her failed attempts to rinse the plate in her hand. Her trembling sent the dish crashing into the sink, drawing the attention of someone nearby. “Fuuuuck. I’m losing my damn mind.”

“I’ll let that slide since I know you’re stressed.”

Tasha yelped at the introduction of the familiar voice before settling back into her skin. “I’m sorry, Mama. I’m just-I don’t know.”

“Tell him when you’re ready, child. Go to a doctor, get the definite answer and then tell him. But tonight, enjoy yourself and stop that crying,” she laughed as she wiped away the small tears on Tasha’s face.

“You’re right. I would ask for a glass of wine but I can’t even have that anymore. This sucks already!”

“Not for the next few months at least,” Mrs. Boseman smiled. “I’m willing to bet you my last dollar that that boy will be over the moon when he finds out.”

“Yeah? You think so?”

“I know so. Come here.” The two women came together in a mother-daughter hug that rocked their bodies from side to side. Tasha’s worries temporarily dissipated in the warm embrace, making her feel ready to take on the remainder of the night.

“Baby! Can I bet money on Spades tonight?”

“Boy, you really are whipped. Never thought I’d see the day.”

“I guess that’s my cue. Thank you, Ma. For the advice and keeping the secret. I love you.”

“I love you, my feisty girl. Now go on in there. He misses you.”

With a last nod of assurance, CoCo turned to rejoin the group. “Go ahead, babe! Let’s rack up a mortgage payment tonight.”

Two hours.

In two hours a maybe transformed into a definite as apprehension over future vacations became worries about appropriate bedroom colors and furniture. In less than eight months there would be another person in the house that neither Chadwick or Tasha had planned for until now.

Sitting in the driveway of their home, CoCo traced the ultrasound image in her hand with her thumb and smiled.

“Hey, little one. It’s nice to meet you. If you’re gonna be this spontaneous when you get here, I think we’ll get along just fine.”

In two hours Tasha found herself falling in love with this being barely the size of a raspberry. She could imagine its little face, a perfect mix of hers and Chadwick’s, staring back at her while she sang a lullaby in the moonlight.

“Can you do me a favor, little one? Be with me while I tell Dad about you. I’m a little nervous.”

Before she could continue, Tasha saw Chadwick’s silhouette moving in the window. His graceful trek through the living room made her heart thump against her chest. It was now or never.

“Wish me luck, baby.”

Inside Chadwick focused on organizing wedding photos on the sitting room mantle. He absentmindedly hummed to the playlist Tasha made for a random date night as he moved around the room and observed his work. A quick look at an action shot from the ceremony made him stop and linger to remember the moment. Chadwick could still feel the magic of that day producing a broad smile and tingle all over his body. Even in the natural ups and downs of their relationship, being married to the woman he called his best friend felt like a dream.

“Babe, I’m home!” The chime of the alarm and Tasha’s sweet voice made Chadwick whip his body around in excitement. Pausing in the threshold of the room, she stopped and returned his smile.

“Nice setup, huh? You think the portraits should go up in here too?”

“I was thinking in the dining room. Our dinner guests should see how nice my titties were in that dress.”

“On second thought I’ll put them in the office,” he laughed. “How was the doctor visit? What’s in the envelope?”

Shifting her weight uneasily, Tasha motioned to the main living room. “Let’s uh...let’s talk in here.”

Chadwick followed his wife into the next room, noting how she avoided eye contact and remained standing even after he took a seat on the couch. Silence hung in the air for an uncomfortable amount of time as he watched Tasha seemingly gather her thoughts.

“So I have some good news and kinda...maybe good news.” When she didn’t continue immediately, Chadwick raised his eyebrows in expectation.

“Oh-kay...I’d love to hear it. Today if that’s okay with you.”

“Right! Right. So...I found out that I don’t have any STDs!”

“Were you worried that you did,” he asked in confusion.

“No, of course not! I’m faithful, you’re faithful, everyone’s faithful and STD free. Great, right?”

“Tasha, what’s in the envelope?”

Chadwick’s deadpanned response let Tasha know that the charade had to end to make way for the real revelation.

After passing the large white envelope across the coffee table, Tasha tried her best to distract herself as he read the contents.

“Please, don’t be mad at me. I told your mom before I told you, but it’s only because she heard me throwing up. I swear I wasn’t hiding anything. I needed to be sure before I-” Silence. Dead silence met her on the other end of her spiel. Chadwick continued to stare at the information in his hands, occasionally switching between test results and the sonogram.

“I thought I had it under control with that temperature rhythm bullshit Devin was teaching me. I guess after we made up I kind of lost track of when we were doing it and how frequently.”

“Is this true, CoCo,” he asked, staring wide-eyed at the results in his hand.

Tasha offered a small nod in response. She fully expected him to be wary of the possibility of having children after his admission days prior. As a couple, they had only recently finished couples therapy and were actively attempting to repair the damage caused by 20 years of broken communication.

With tears threatening to spill, Tasha took a seat on the ottoman opposite Chadwick and put her head in her hands.

“Aaron if...if this isn’t what you want, we can find another solution.” Her hurried words fell from her lips like lava as she tried to make her point before he made an angry exit. “I’m sorry. I know what you said the other day and I’m sorry. We should’ve discussed contraception or something.”

Finally snapping out of his trance, Chadwick quickly dropped to his knees and cupped his wife’s face to focus her attention. “What? You’re sorry? Baby, this is amazing! I-I’m gonna be a daddy!”

His lips crashed into CoCo’s in a rushed kiss that almost pushed her onto the floor. She quickly recovered, swiveling on her behind to watch her husband pace the room.

“I’m sorry, what? You’re excited?”

“Hell yeah, I’m excited! We’re, well, you are having a baby. My baby!”

As his dancing continued around the space, Tasha’s face became a mix of bewilderment and wonder. “But you just said we need to wait for two years. What changed?”

“I said that because I thought it sounded responsible! They already think we’re insane for getting engaged in three months. I don’t need people in our business. Get up and dance with me!”

Chadwick’s childlike excitement became contagious until they were enthralled in the magic of each other.

“You are my lady! You’re everything I neeeed and more! You are my baby, you’re all I’m livin’ fooooor.”

Letting out a genuine giggle, Tasha hid her mouth behind her hand. “Did you just remix the lyrics?”

“You damn right. Because you are my lady and this is my baby. It wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t include everyone.” Tasha tried to hide her smile by dropping her head only to have her chin lifted by Chadwick. His lips took charge in a sweet, lingering kiss that lasted until the end of the song and into the next. When they finally pulled apart, they took time to drink in the full scope of each other.

“I’ve never seen you look more beautiful than this moment right now. Thank you for starting this crazy journey with me.”

“You fell into my trap! We’re stuck together for life now.”

Chadwick laughed at Tasha’s teary-eyed joke as he took a second to wipe the stray droplets from her face with the pad of his thumb. She found comfort in holding her ear to his chest while he chose to rest his chin on the top of her head.

Their bodies swayed to the soft crooning of Anita Baker, holding each other close and losing all concept of space and time with Just Because providing a soundtrack. When Chadwick decided to open his eyes and look around, visions of his future family danced across the open space.

He smiled at the image before adding one last kiss to Tasha’s forehead.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way, baby. Not any other way.”
