Chapter 4-1 Immortal Person (仙人)
Chapter 3-16
.
.
.
You: I have returned to Guangling. I urge everyone to unite and rebuild the Xiuyi Tower here.
You: All departments of the Xiuyi Tower, except the Kite Division, which must await Fu Rong's return, are to establish bases in Ruxu, Qinghe, and Jiangxia.
Everyone: Your orders will be obeyed.
You: Ah Chan, select a few people to be solely responsible for rebuilding the Feather Chamber in the East Mansion and training more Xiuyi Kites.
Ever since the Xiuyang base was destroyed, the Paper Heart System has been malfunctioning frequently. Currently, communication can only rely on the Xiuyi Cloud Kites.
I was about to speak with the Grand Administrator of Guangling when a sudden gust of wind stirred, scattering a shower of flower petals across the courtyard.
What a heavy shower of petals... at this time of year? With the weather still so cold, it shouldn't be the flowering season yet.
-
It was already late at night after I finished handling official matters. Under the moonlit garden, a hundred flowers bloomed in vibrant splendor.
You: It's strange for these flowers to be blooming... It's still so cold; it shouldn't be their flowering season yet.
Something stirred in my sleeve. The malfunctioning Paper Heart was actually responding at this moment!
You: The Paper Heart System is working again? Wait! Where are you going?!
The Paper Heart leaped out of my sleeve and ran towards a certain spot in the courtyard. I quickly followed, stepping deeper into the garden.
Is someone there? Who could it be at this late hour?
You: Who's there?
A figure, as if sculpted from frost and snow, stood quietly in the garden.
He turned to look at me, his gaze falling upon me like a light frost amidst the flower shadows.
You: ...Master?
I had forgotten how long it had been since I last saw him. He was the master of the Hidden Kite Pavilion, residing in seclusion in West Shu all year round.
--The immortal Zuo Ci.
You: It's been a long time, Master. What brings you to Guangling?
He looked into my eyes. The Paper Heart was still by his side.
Zuo Ci: I have something to tell you. Let's go to the study.
You: The study is a bit messy. I'll have someone prepare tea, Master. Please wait a moment in the guest room...
He ignored my suggestion, walked past me, and headed towards the study.
Zuo Ci: Urgent matters must be discussed promptly. Follow me.

So I know the people who liked and rebolgged this previously won't just magically see this addition (sad but I don't want to tag a bunch of people randomly) but since I gave up on this project (it takes so many hours to translate han dynasty ass poetry for fun and free) I haven't really thought about it...
Until recently someone messaged me begging to continue. And I almost did, because I love my fellow weebs and freaks. But instead, I went crawling around for another translation, and someone has done it! And so much better than me! So I am sharing the first of their many hours of translated gameplay!!!! Weebs and freaks enjoy!!!!

So, a few days ago I found this post on Reddit from 2 years ago (that sadly barely got any attention at the time) that sheds a ton of light on the separation scene between Gon and Killua, and my mind is blown! I've known for years that there was some sort of Togashi "coding" in the dialogue and it was always like I could get halfway to understanding, but this post gives the rest of the puzzle pieces that I was missing, and ties into other scenes that I was uncertain about the meaning of as well. It's heartbreaking, but also hopeful for their future! I had to share it with you all. Please read it!
The original Reddit post has been deleted, but here is a link to the author's Reddit profile. (I received permission from the original author to post this here.)
In-Depth analysis on the Hidden Reasons behind Gon & Killua's separation scene (ep 147) Why Gon is 'Number 2'
The translations across the separation scene in both manga (chp 338) and the anime (ep 147, 2011) have some shortfalls. These dialogues are vital for understanding even the first layer of reasons behind this separation.
REASONS FOR KILLUA'S DELICATELY PLANNED SEPARATION
1. WHEN -
There are very important reasons why Killua picked a specific timing to tell Gon about Alluka. It was Killua's plan all along, to only tell Gon at a moment's notice, to make sure Gon won’t get time to ask any DETAILS. He is deliberately downplaying the seriousness of everything he’s been through to heal Gon, so it will have less impact on Gon, and at the same time, avoid Gon asking details. Prior to healing Gon, Killua specifically asked Morel and Leorio to promise not to tell Gon that he saved him. After Gon was healed, there was a scene in the anime (ep 148) which showed the three spent a night together before reaching the World Tree. During that time, Killua still haven't said anything. It wasn't until the moment when they were literally saying the last goodbye, Killua casually brought up:
“Oh, by the way, this guy healed you."
I want to emphasis the word Killua used to address Alluka was “こいつ”. This is a very light and overly casual word used to address someone you know, and usually a playful guy friend (e.g. “This guy used to be my neighbour.” type of feeling). The manga and anime translation, “She’s the one that healed you,” did not clearly depict the intentional casualness.
2. WHAT was SAID -
If Killua just doesn’t want to burden Gon with guilt and responsibility, then why not just keep his mouth shut and say nothing? That’s because Killua found a better option than not telling Gon anything. Killua shifted the “priority of reasons” a bit, so the VERSION OF EVENTS he told Gon, was PRIORITIZED on Alluka’s rescue rather than healing Gon. This way, they will also get to THANK Gon, and put an emphasis on thanking Gon because Killua make it SEEMED like it was more important to rescue Alluka, that the INITIAL REASON for Killua to go home, was to rescue Alluka. Only AFTER Alluka was freed, they came to the hospital to heal Gon, out of convenience, since only Alluka has the ability to do so, and since she’s now outside. The MAIN motive for these past events has been delicately swapped around by Killua, so the focus switched to the rescue of Alluka, rather than healing Gon. Hence Alluka is “No. 1”, Gon is “No. 2”. Downplaying it so healing Gon was just a bonus convenience (ep 147, 19:12 to 19:51).
Killua then goes on another level to make this version of events seem even more realistic, by saying “….You owe me a lot now,” in a teasing and playful tone of voice. This is to again, downplay the seriousness of everything he’s been through, to comfort Gon that "Yes you owe me one now, but don’t you worry! I will make sure you pay it back okay?! Hehe!”
3. WHY -
The fight with Pitou allowed Killua to witness Gon's ultimately immature mind set when it comes to “repaying someone, and redeeming himself.” Kite lost an arm and his life to protect him. So Gon gave his life and was even more happy when Pitou took his arm too. Gon will always want to “match” what was sacrificed by another, by throwing away AT LEAST the same. Not “sacrificing”, but THROWING AWAY. It’s so immature, so dangerous, no one will be able to keep up with him. Killua was very confident with how much he could take, but even Killua himself is at limit. This ultimate baka!! (ep 136, 17:50 - 20:17)
If this is how far Gon will go for Kite, he can only imagine what Gon would go recklessly into if he knew the DETAILS. This is when Killua decided on a way to part with Gon the way they did, and to PROVIDE him a particular REASON.
“I’m prepared to spent the rest of my life protecting her.”
This is the reason Killua wants Gon to know, but NOT what he actually wants to do with his life. Although it’s true he feels responsible and genuinely wish to protect Alluka and Nanika, but it’s not what he ultimately WANTS to do. He NEEDS to protect Alluka, but he WANTS to spent his entire life by the side of a certain baka…
After the previous events, Killua was traumatized, especially when he saw Gon's twisted decaying arm. That was a breaking point for him, after that, the only thing that matters THE MOST for him is for Gon to be safe. He also realized that in order to protect this baka... it’s better if he keeps a distance for now, until he finds a solution to keep Alluka safe from Illumi and his family.
4. THE PARTING -
By planning this parting with Gon, Killua hopes Gon will become detached from him. And that time and distance will slowly render him less important to Gon. So if he was to die... (because Illumi is hunting them down) he did for Alluka, he did it for the vow to protect Alluka, not Gon. We knew Killua always plans ahead, and here, he plants this reason for Gon in the future so he won’t need to feel responsible if he was to die protecting Alluka (or die with Alluka while Illumi is hunting them). This is what’s going through Killua’s head:
“If I die, you’re not responsible for anything. You don’t owe me anything, so NEVER throw your life away again. My only one wish, is for you to be safe. So here I am. I’m parting ways with you... Because I SAID you are only ... No. 2 ... I SAID you are not the most important to me.. So don’t think of me as the most important to you too….”
This, is Killua’s eternal Devotion.
5. THE RESULT -
As a result of this deliberate planning by Killua,
Gon was made to believe:
While I was recovering in hospital Killua had to go home and rescue his sister
Alluka is such a cute sister and she can grant Killua any wish?!!! Wow…that’s one cool sister…
Well… no wonder Killua thinks his cool sister is more important than me, it’s only natural.
Looks like Killua finally found what he wants to do. He will enjoy traveling the world with such a cool sister, it will be so much fun. I should be happy for him, I can’t hold him here... I have to let him go…
VS
The DETAILS omitted:
Gon was not recovering at all in the hospital. Killua RESORTED to USE Alluka in order to heal Gon.
Alluka’s blood stained dark past and the risks and uncertainty that still involves.
Baka Gon is always No. 1 !
Killua and Alluka are desperately trying to find a way to out of Illumi’s grasp. Illumi is hunting them down and trying to make Killua his puppet again. And this time it's not going to be just a needle in the head... Killua can feel it. And if things doesn’t work out, he will just kill Alluka.
These Reasons are the core of the separation. We have a song named “Reason”… aren’t the lyrics shedding a new layer of light now?
6. IMPORTANT WORDS ALLUKA USED TO FACILITATE A BETTER RELATIONSHIP AFTER REUNION -
Killua promised to “always be together” with Alluka.
But to this promise, Alluka’s response was always silent (episode 145, 3:32 to 4:19). She looked at Killua with deep thought. Because even in such a short amount of time, she realized Killua is doing all this to ALSO or MORE SO protect Gon. It was never just for her, it will never be just for her, and there will never be anyone more important than Gon for Killua. She’s moved by Killua’s devotion and resolve, and she can also feel his sadness…
If, the situation was different, if Gon was never there to begin with, and Killua just happened to solely come to Alluka’s rescue, and then make a promise to stay together with her forever, Alluka’s natural reaction will be melting with happiness, she’d be crying tears of joy, and hugging Killua. But in this instance, she was composed, she sensed her brother’s deep seriousness and sadness. That’s why later on, she reassured the two at parting, that they will see each other again, without disclosing Killua’s true REASONS.
The Exacted words Alluka used (Manga chpt 338, 2011 anime epi 147)
a. Manga translation: “I’m going to HUG my brother for a while and then I will LET HIM GO.”
b. Better translation: “I’m going to have my brother all to myself for a while and then I will let him free.”
c. The exacted phrase: “I’m going to Monopolise my brother Exclusively for a period of time, then I will Release him.”
独り占 (Monopolise Exclusively)
Very strong characters with Explicit meaning. Have it all to oneself. Same characters and meaning used in Chinese as well. (独占)
解放 (Release)
This is much more formal and serious than “let go”. It implies the subject was initially bound/locked/restricted. Also the same characters and meaning used in Chinese.
Alluka employed these words to imply a forceful lead in this “deal” of owning Killua exclusively. These words have an underlying tone of enslavement.
Why? Because Alluka knows, the harder she IMPOSES herself on Killua during their time together, the more effective it would be on the easing of Killua’s own guilt.
Killua felt immensely guilty.
No one will enjoy a relationship bound by guilt.
Alluka knows clearly that part of her brother’s promise, was formed with guilt, from using her and Nanika, that he was having fun with Gon while Alluka was literally forgotten. Although it's true that this was largely due to Illumi's manipulation, but the fact that he did just left her in the basement all this time was both unacceptable and unforgivable to Killua himself (episode 138, 13:28).
Therefore apart from protecting Gon, this was the other important reason for this separation. Almost as if Killua has accepted this as a befitting price to pay in order to redeem himself as a brother.
Alluka and Nanika have no condition nor demand in return for Killua’s requests. But Killua imposed a price on himself for having Gon healed. Out of guilt. Alluka knows, Nanika knows. That’s why Alluka used the word 解放 (release), because it will make Killua feel better, that he has complied with her ‘enslavement’, so when the time comes, Killua will be able to release HIMSELF from guilt, and go back to Gon, properly. Alluka loves her brother, and she’s prepared to help him towards a better relationship with Gon in the future, by helping him to eliminating this chain of guilt.
lol Alluka totally ships Gon and Killua ! XD
Thank you for reading.

Reverie Devlog - March 2025
Tumblr media
Intro
March is here, which means it’s time for another Devlog! This may be the final log for Chapter 4, as we approach the finish line. Weve made a lot of progress ever since the New Year, so let's get straight to it.
Progress
A major amount of progress has been made, this time mostly on the battles - as it's one of the later things to be polished.
Restructuring
ALL enemy data has been restructured to a new system, for ease of development.
- In technical terms, each enemy now occupies one slot in the RPGmaker data editor instead of the base game’s four.
As a result, all previous enemy AIs have now been standardized based on emotion, as opposed to being hard coded percentage differences (With exceptions for certain bosses).
- Angry increases the chances of offensive skills.
- Sad increases the chances of defensive skills.
- Happy increases the chance of special skills (less chance to use a basic attack).
- Drop rates based on emotion have also been standardized to be consistent.
Fixed a lot of broken or unintended AI behavior in Chapter 1 and 2. Some are also getting a total overhaul, like Kite Kid.
Others
Extra area maps are now finished; these are singular large maps to explore, with extra rewards and battles.
Most new enemies now have AI.
Some skills have been rebalanced and tweaked for functionality. Namely, AOE emotion skills are now acquired before level 20 and are usable on both sides.
The majority of equipment and charms have been implemented, with some being buyable or extra challenge rewards.
Quality of life changes, with ailments being visible with particle effects.
Common buffs and basic attacks are now standardized to use the same skill and state across different enemies. This is also so translators do not need to translate the same exact basic attack 40 times.
An accessible guide book has been added that lists the gameplay changes that have been made in the mod.
What’s Next
Extra area gameplay, mostly setting up troops and meaningful reasons to go there.
Extra optional area cutscenes; these tend to be smaller.
Properly make the ending scene for Chapter 4.
Some skill animations.
Moving on into early playtesting.
Final Notes
We’ve made tremendous progress so far, and chapter 4 is now nearing release. This is likely to be the final devlog for Chapter 4.
Anyways, as a thanks for reading this far, here's a teaser for a battle theme for the Castle area.

Death predictions:
Tubbo- eventually the group won’t be able to justify his continued survival like he’s already cheated death on several occasions.
Eloise- I don’t know. This character feels tragic. Something is gonna go wrong. You’re gonna sacrifice yourself for your friends aren’t you.
Scott or Acho but not both- they already killed a lesbian couple day one. They’re gonna separate these two. I can feel it.
Survival predictions:
Scar- you cannot kill him in a way that matters
Owen- main character lookin ass (also needs to be constantly present online because this server’s code is held together by paper clips and craft glue and literally nothing works)
Krow- only surviving member of the Kites with any amount of brain cells and I think that at least one person from every faction will live to the end.
Olive- GO OLIVE GO!!!! GO OLIVE GO!!!’ (Translation: I am an unrepentant Olivesleepy Stan and will not be normal)

okay so i’ve been listening to the heaven official’s blessing audiobook recently (which from henceforth i will refer to as ‘reading tgcf/hob’) and i cannot begin to tell you how insane it is. the anime does an absolutely incredible job of sticking to the accuracy and events of the story and truly is one of the most beautiful art styles i’ve ever seen. but the problem with tv is that it is very difficult to show a characters inner thoughts. a lot of the time that gets translated into action and expression of some kind. but in the book, holy hell, the amount of coding™️ that goes into xie lian alone is insane.
the first time he saw san lang (not hua cheng on mount yujun but san lang in the ox cart) he did not just look at him. did not just engage in conversation about the latest god gossip. no he described him as beautiful. spent ages explaining the red of his tunic and the black of his hair and the pale of his skin. and that is one minuscule example.
in the banyue arc when they’re caught up in the sandstorm and xie lian gets lifted into the air, we see in the show that he asks rouye (his silk bandages) to extend and grab onto something dependable and solid and the first thing they grab onto is san lang. we know that scene. it was masterfully and delightfully done in the show. but when you read it in the book, it is not just that xie lian asks rouye to find something solid and dependable to latch onto and rouye happened to find san lang. it’s that rouye went to san lang. those bandages went to san lang first. as in the same way hua cheng’s scimitar loves xie lian, rouye loves hua cheng. and when he finds san lang he binds to san lang’s wrist (just his wrist) and suddenly xie lian is safe. kited in the air sure, but safe.
rouye is treated as very much a “character” with feelings, who gets scared, or worried. who is affectionate towards hua cheng from the very beginning. i don’t think it’s that noticeable in the show (if it is at all). but it is so painfully sweet in the book.
also side note xie lian is not only intrigued by the silver butterflies but finds them beautiful and plays with them. hahahahha i nearly collapsed by the way.
in the scene when xie lian and san lang are to sleep on the same straw mat for the first time, san lang doesn’t take off any clothes but xie lian does remove his outer layer, exposing first the black collar at his neck (his cursed shackle) and then later the cursed shackle at his ankle. in both instances, san lang’s rage is palpable, described as ‘his gaze focused on those spots and his eyes dark’. i can’t actually describe how unbearable these two are from the very beginning. as soon as they meet… as soon as they meet, there is no other version of the story. it is xie lian the crown prince. and then it is them. and it is always them after that.
anyway if you haven’t you should definitely read tgcf, it’s so so so good! also xie lian describes himself as an old man because he doesn’t know anything happening in the heavenly realm and keeps getting himself into awkward conversations in the communication array with his horrible conversation skills and outdated news. it’s hilarious. i’m listening to the audiobook on spotify, so if you want the link let me know :)

AI for Coding
Software development is only one of the areas that artificial intelligence (AI) is changing globally. AI for coding is not just a sci-fi idea; it is already a reality, increasing efficiency, decreasing mistakes, and making programming more accessible. AI tools are changing the way developers approach their work, from debugging to automatically generating code.
The Role of AI in Coding
Code Generation: By offering intelligent code recommendations and finishing snippets depending on context, tools such as GitHub Copilot and OpenAI Codex let developers write code more quickly. These tools save time and effort by being able to write whole functions.
Code Debugging: AI-driven debugging tools look for mistakes in code, provide fixes, and occasionally resolve problems on their own. Instead of concentrating on monotonous work, this enables developers to concentrate more on innovative problem-solving.
Testing Automation: By creating test cases, mimicking user interactions, and spotting edge cases that could otherwise go unnoticed, AI speeds up the testing stage.
Code Translation: Developers can more easily adapt current codebases to new platforms by using AI's ability to translate code between programming languages.
Learning & Education: LeetCode and CodeSignal, two AI-powered platforms, offer tailored coding tasks and feedback.
Popular AI Tools for Coding
GitHub Copilot: A code completion tool driven by artificial intelligence that helps developers by recommending lines or blocks of code in a variety of programming languages.
TabNine: A multi-IDE-compatible AI assistant that provides context-aware recommendations.
DeepCode: A powerful code review tool that identifies flaws and makes recommendations for fixes.
Kite: An IDE-integrable coding aid that offers documentation and real-time completions.
Benefits of AI for Coding
Increased Productivity: By automating tedious activities and offering intelligent support, AI enables developers to complete more work in less time.
Better Code Quality: AI contributes to the upkeep of high standards in codebases by identifying flaws and recommending best practices.
Accessibility: AI-driven technologies democratize software development by enabling non-programmers to create apps without requiring a deep understanding of coding.
Cost-effectiveness: Automation lowers project costs by reducing the time and resources required for developing, testing, and debugging.
The use of AI for coding is transforming software development by increasing accessibility, speed, and efficiency. Even though there are still obstacles to overcome, the possible advantages greatly exceed the disadvantages. As technology advances, it should not only increase developer efficiency but also enable a new generation of creatives to easily realize their ideas.

The smile he gave was soft and full of amusement. He liked that he was her treasure. His hand reached up to barely touch her cheek, fingertips faintly tracing over the warm skin. He blinked as he took a mental picture of her face. Taking a moment to learn the contours of her face.
He looked at her so tenderly, not like she'd break or like she was incapable of looking after herself but in the way that showed he respected her. He cared for more than her well being. Even if he was someone else he'd commit the boundary to memory. ❛how about if we have a code word for it. You're not always gonna be facing me and I don't want to inadvertently trigger you. That's the last thing I'd want. Something like cerf-volant. Which could be translated to flying deer but actually means kite. ❜ His slight accent came through as his dimpled smile broke for a brief moment.
Tumblr media
❛ Could even make it sexy like, ❜ His hazel green eyes boring into hers as he licked his lips and innunciated the word. ❛ cerf volant.❜ The tone was sultry enough to pass for something incredibly romantic that no one would know what he was talking about. He leaned in like he was about to give her a kiss and paused just being a mere inches away from her face. Reality was he could make anything sound sexy even the most mundane things. ❛ See? ❜
Fingertips lightly traced over her knuckles and eventually locked his with hers as he helped her board. While it was true he did this for a living, it didn't feel like it normally did. She was his friend but it felt like that took on more weight. It took him a second to let go of her hand and take his seat on his seat.
He brought out the updated file that contained names, places and dealers. Everything was organized and in sections. ❛ Guillermo is your security. Loyal guard dog so to speak. He's also undercover. He'll be flanking your side when I'm not with you. We borrowed him from the CIA. He's good under pressure. If you run into any issues, you will always have back up. ❜ he'd forgot to mention Gilly as he nicknamed him, was his security detail. But he'd rather have her covered and safe since she was the civilian.
❛ Did you want food? We've got options. ❜ When the stewardess passed by he asked for a lemon water and went back to the file he was spreading out for Elizabeth. He looked back as his lemon water was placed in front of him. Giving another look at Elizabeth, appreciation colored his orbs as he drank her in. There was really no excuse for staring at her but he couldn't really look away. Something was there. He just hadn't quite figured that part out yet.

❝ Why can’t I be both, teroso mio? ❞ A devious smile upon her lips, almost cheshire cat-like. At his approval of her image, she couldn’t help but stand up a smidge bit taller. It was strange, she had done this so often in the past but for some reason, the fact that he approved seemed to make her feel proud about it. She also found that she seemed to like his gaze upon her. ❝No, thank you. ❞ She politely declined as she began to flip through the book of poems.
Listening to him she nodded along letting him know that she was paying attention and ready. The last thing she had said to him began to come back to her as she watched Wally fully become someone else. One moment he was there, the next….
He would have been a great partner to do scams with in a different life. But she needed to focus, Wally needed to come home safe, so she would make sure that she did all she could so that he could come back to his family.
❝ Let's go. ❞ She slipped her arm around one of his. ❝ While Mrs. Fioreli, none. If I can’t see you and you’re about to touch me I might not take it well if I don’t know it’s coming. So just a verbal cue before you do would help. Do what you need to to get this done. ❞ She had done a lot worse for less, this would be a cakewalk. ❝ This is your operation, I follow your lead. Just tell me what you need and I‘ll get done. ❞

Chapter 5-5 A Sudden Encounter with a Warship (艨艟一警)
Chapter 5-1
.
.
.
You: We're about three days away from Shouchun by water. Ah Chan, one last confirmation, what are our identities now?
Chan: The daughter of Lord Qiao of Lujiang, and her maidservant.
The Qiao family of Lujiang is one of the Xiuyi Tower's allies in the south, and they have a long-standing friendship with the Sun family.
For this trip to Shouchun, I borrowed my identity from the Qiao family.
Scholar: Look, the flag on the bow of that ship, isn't that the Qiao family's vessel?
Vendor: Which lady of the Qiao family do you think is on board? Could it be... that one...
I heard the commotion on the shore as many men craned their necks to look at our ship.
You: I'm going to Shouchun on behalf of my "father," Lord Qiao, to visit Lady Wu, Sun Jian's wife.
You: I am the eldest daughter of the Qiao family, so they will also call me...
Da Qiao.
-
You: Ah, the river breeze is so refreshing... Ah Chan, want to come out for some air? Those people can't see us anymore.
Ah Chan's head poked out from behind the curtain. The boat rocked a little, and she quickly retreated back inside.
Chan: ...I'm fine.
She seems to be a bit afraid of the water...
You: Ah!!!
The current suddenly became swift, and the small boat started to rock violently.
A naval fleet appeared ahead. Towering warships, like mountain fortresses on the water, cut through the surging waves.
You: Warships of Jiangdong, the Sun family's battle flag, they are...
The warships, with their dragon drums beating, crossed the river.
A young general, clad in golden armor and bright robes, stood alone at the bow of the leading ship. The sunlight reflected off his armor, blazing like fire.
???: What are you looking at? Trying to race a warship? Do you want to be fish food?
-You keep looking at him-
???: Why are you still looking? Hmph, you can look at me all you want, let's see how many heads you have to dare block the path of a warship... Whoa!
-He suddenly stops talking and blushes after looking at you-
Navy Soldier A: Young Master, should we blast that boat out of the way?
???: ...Um... Um... Um...
Navy Soldier A: Young Master?
???: Forget it. She looks... quite pleasing to the eye.
The warships sailed away, and the bow of our boat bobbed for a long time before the water gradually calmed down.
-
You: We can see Shouchun City now...
Shouchun is Sun Jian's territory. If we reveal our identities here, there will be no help for us.
You: Ah Chan, check the tallies one more time. If they ask why there are no male escorts, remember the excuse we prepared...
You: And also... this... that...
Chan: Tower Master, something's wrong at the city gate!
Following the direction she pointed, I looked towards the distant city gate of Shouchun.
You: ?!!
Why is the Shouchun city gate in such a state?!

They duel for these areas, and the three students are their opponents, bearing the Masks of Laughter, Apathy, and Anger. O'Brien, Johan, and Jim take them on, but...
TURN-125: Johan, Jim, and O'Brien VS the Three Masked Knights
The duels for the food storage area continue as Johan faces the Mask of Apathy, O'Brien the Mask of Laughter, and Jim the Mask of Anger. Johan is gradually cornered by the Mask of Apathy's Silent Space, while Jim gets his Life reduced by Angered Anchor Knight. O'Brien is composed as he duels, soon realizing that these duels are a ruse as he speeds up his match. Johan and Jim, after hearing the truth from O'Brien that it is all a ruse, change gears and start to counterattack, as well. Elsewhere, Rei sees Vice-Principal Napoleon run off out of worry for Martin and brings Judai along to go after him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wanted to get these done a bit sooner after 122-123 took longer than ideal, but at least it's exactly a month later that I'm posting these lol. Episodes 124 and 125 are now finalized! Not a bad pair of episodes as the students start getting to their food breaking point after a few days in this new dimension, all the while a certain someone, through Martin, starts to make their move. While we probably could've used a bit more around the concept of Spirits fusing with people--or at least who the Card Spirits were--it was an interesting idea which allowed some time to shine for Johan, Jim, and O'Brien, with O'Brien showing some of his ex-soldier instincts as he realizes that Martin set their duels up as a ruse to cover up what he was really after--the three Phantasm Cards?! It's also hard to go wrong with another episode helmed by Kyoung Soo Lee's animation team in 125, semi-jarring as the quality bump could be coming off 124 from Chi Man Park and Sun Ming Nam. (Also, Judai finding out that Martin is Napoleon's son is always classic.) (Also also, I really wish the dub kept O'Brien silently walking away as Mask of Laughter reads the effect of his Draw Bomb, instead of making Axel tell him what it is; dampens the comedy there originally.)
Animation error-wise, I applied a fair few fixes across both episodes; 124 mostly saw its errors in the second half of the episode and were more quality-of-watching fixes like split-screen timings with half a handful of quick card error fixes--or I should probably say "pawful" with a Pharaoh-related error in the preview involved, too--while 125 had the most that I picked up on and fixed, with a few card errors, the aforementioned Pharaoh error, and more QOW stuff. Breakdown under the cut below as always for the interested!
Anywho, enjoy! I'll probably do some preliminary setup for 126 and 127 as I shift gears to more proper work on the TFSP re-translation and get work done on Kite and Kotori's story events, along with some other interesting code sleuthing I've been slowly working on related to that voice update I shared the other week, and also look at ARC-V "Dub-Uncut" episode 2 a bit more. Depending on how I feel after 126-127 in terms of what I want to work on, I may decide to either do 128 on its own or do 128-130 together as 128 leads into the Judai/Johan/Martin duel that culminates in Yubel's reveal 🤔 (May also depend on which route gets to coincide with the GX remaster starting in April, lol.) Stay tuned!
Fixes and Edits! (124)
As Judai and the others hear Martin suggest trading the Food Storage Facility for the Power Generator Complex in their territory, after Judai notes that it's buried in sand, Johan wonders why he'd want that area before Kenzan whispers to Judai about going ahead and trading it because it's apparently useless--but as that overhead shot of them starts, Johan's missing his closed mouth in the 3-4 frames before he starts to move his head. Quickly fixed in Sony Vegas by masking/splicing in his closed mouth from a later frame and adjusting it for where his head is at the start of the shot.
Later, once everyone is outside and Johan, Jim, and O'Brien decide they'll be the ones to duel the Masks, we get a shot of each staring down their opponents--but in the first one with Johan and Mask of Apathy, there are two issues as they slide in for their split-screen: 1) the first frame of the split-screen slide-in has them already halfway into the screen, leading to the slide-in not being as smooth as it usually is, and 2) just as it looks like they've set up the split-screen and connected their splits, there's another frame of movement where they actually fully move into position. Fixed #1 by re-doing their splits in Sony Vegas to be more fluid/natural, masking/splicing each split over the still shot of them and moving them accordingly, fixing #2 in the process.
A bit later as the duel gets underway, Johan, Jim, and O'Brien join a split-screen to shout "Duel!" as we cut to their Disks activating, while the same is done with the three Masks--though in the last frame of their split-screen, before we see all three of their Disks, Mask of Laughter's split changes to show his Disk first, with the sky background behind him; the background then changes as we cut to see all three of their Disks so that the ground under him is behind his Disk the way it is for the others'. Fixed in Vegas by just replacing this error frame with a flash white frame so that we get a white flash going from their split-screen into their Disks to match Johan, Jim, and O'Brien.
The very next shot, we see Johan and Mask of Apathy's LP counters pop up as they get underway, both sliding in for a split-screen as Johan lets him go first--but because, with the exception of Johan and Apathy being drawn with their Disks on and Johan going on to slide back out as Apathy takes his turn, this is the same shot as #2 above, the same error with the un-smooth split-screen slide-in happens. Fixed in Vegas by reprising the edit I did there to make the slide-in more fluid, tweaking things slightly with the new split borders I applied for consistency with the rest of the new footage here.
A bit later, as Mask of Laughter makes his first move, Fool Clown's effect makes him discard his hand, but the Laugh Bombers he discards this way then hit O'Brien for damage--as he discards, two issues come up: 1) he doesn't have Fool Clown in Monster Zone #4 on his Disk, where he'd placed it in the prior shot and we see it in subsequent shots, and 2) noticed while fixing #1, there's a quick frame [the one linked earlier] as Laughter moves his hand away from his Cemetery where there's a blank gap between his fingers, and the part of his Disk under his hand should be visible there. Fixed in AfterEffects, #1 by placing a Fool Clown proxy I whipped up into place in Monster Zone #4, then masking Laughter's hand in over it as it moves in to send the cards off and then backs away, while I fixed #2 by actually masking in the corrected gap between his fingers from the clip in #6 below (being the same shot again, save for some shading differences on Laughter's and Mask of Anger's hands) and then applying slight masks along the edges of his cards to overlay them over what remained of the blank gap.
Sometime after that, during Mask of Anger's first turn, he discards to activate the effect of his Angered Anchor Knight--but as he does, like in #5 above (being the same shot), his Knight is missing from Monster Zone #4 on his Disk. Fixed while fixing #5 in AfterEffects, as I could simply copy/paste the effects I used on Fool Clown to apply them to the layer with the Angered Anchor Knight proxy I put into place.
During the preview for 125, we see Pharaoh come up to Rei's leg to get her attention, and there are two quick issues that come up: 1) there's a quick movement frame (lasting for three frames) where Pharaoh's upper left leg/paw isn't fully drawn in towards the bottom, causing the ground behind him to be visible under the last brown spot, and 2) the movement frame immediately after (also lasting three frames) has the same leg/paw missing its spots suddenly before they come back in the next movement frame. Fixed both in 125 proper first using Photoshop and Vegas, as I first used Photoshop to fill in the missing skin to fix #1, fixing #2 by using the next frame with his leg/paw spots back to cut out the leg itself and duplicate it into the error frame in #2, adjusting it to fit and erasing any extra parts I didn't need as it was in a similar enough position to work--once both frames were fixed, I mixed them into the preview's footage in Vegas.
Immediately after #7, we see Rei turn towards Pharaoh before looking past him to see Napoleon running back into the Academia--though as Rei turns to look at Napoleon, her collarbone vanishes for some reason. Fixed using Photoshop and Vegas for 125 proper first, using the frame right before she turns as reference to splice in her collarbone lines and adjust them slightly in the movement frames as she turns towards Napoleon; once fixed, I then mixed the six or so fixed frames into the preview's footage in Vegas.
Fixes and Edits! (125)
During the recap of 124 at the beginning, we see the shot of Mask of Laughter sending his hand to the Cemetery through Fool Clown's effect to hit O'Brien with damage, with the same error in missing Fool Clown in Monster Zone #4 on his Disk, along with the same blank-gap error between his fingers in that one frame. Fixed by reprising my fix from 124 proper.
Getting into 125 proper, as Johan reacts in shock at Mask of Apathy having another Magic Card to use in Silent Torment, Apathy slides in on a split-screen to explain its effect, but Johan moves a frame before Apathy's split starts to slide in. Fixed in Vegas by redoing the start of Apathy's slide-in slightly so that he starts his slide-in during the frame Johan starts to move.
A bit after that, cutting back to Jim's duel with Mask of Anger, Anger activates Angered Anchor Knight's effect again to deal Jim damage, but as his Knight's anchor closes in on Jim, his Weathering Soldier is missing from Monster Zone #4 on his Disk, which we also see it in in the very next shot as his LP go down. Fixed using AfterEffects by applying a proxy, then applying some motion tracking to zoom it in while the Zone's visible.
A bit later, after Napoleon and Rei worry about Martin and why he's doing all this, we see a montage of all the Duel Zombies roaming inside the Academia--but when we see Shou and Ayukawa, their decks are missing in the deck slots on their active Disks, while all the other Zombies have theirs in place (and later, as they walk towards Judai and Martin, their decks are there). Thought of fixing this, but due to having to find a similarly angled shot or two to then try to mask into place and move with them, possibly using motion tracking, I left it as-is.
Sometime after that, Napoleon decides to sneak back into the Academia to try and find Martin, which Pharaoh notices; he scoots over to paw at Rei's leg to get her attention, but there are two quick issues that come up: 1) there's a quick movement frame (lasting for three frames) where Pharaoh's upper left leg/paw isn't fully drawn in towards the bottom, causing the ground behind him to be visible under the last brown spot, and 2) the movement frame immediately after (also lasting three frames) has the same leg/paw missing its spots suddenly before they come back in the next movement frame. As noted under 124, I fixed both in 125 proper first using Photoshop and Vegas, as I first used Photoshop to fill in the missing skin to fix #1, fixing #2 by using the next frame with his leg/paw spots back to cut out the leg itself and duplicate it into the error frame in #2, adjusting it to fit and erasing any extra parts I didn't need as it was in a similar enough position to work--once both frames were fixed, I mixed them into the footage in Vegas.
Immediately after #5, Rei turns towards Pharaoh before looking past him to see Napoleon running back into the Academia--though as Rei turns to look at Napoleon, her collarbone vanishes for some reason. As noted under 124, I fixed this using Photoshop and Vegas for 125 proper first, using the frame right before she turns as reference to splice in her collarbone lines and adjust them slightly in the movement frames as she turns towards Napoleon; once fixed, I then mixed the six or so fixed frames into the footage in Vegas.
Later, after O'Brien figures out that these duels are a ruse and gets his turn underway, the first time he uses Fire Back to re-summon Fire Trooper, he notes that Mask of Laughter will take another 1000 points of damage; he slides in on a split screen and chuckles as he drops to 1500 LP, only for O'Brien to slide Laughter out of the split-screen by moving to activate a second Fire Back--but Laughter starts moving for the slide-out a frame before O'Brien starts to move, and the slide-out also lasts about 12 frames when they're usually about 7-8, causing it to be slightly out of sync with the slide-out SFX. Fixed this in Vegas by first timing it so that Laughter sliding out happens as O'Brien moves, then by snipping out a frame or two of the slide-out to slightly speed up the slide-out to time it better with the SFX.
A few shots later, as O'Brien sends Volcanic Buckshot to his Cemetery as Fire Back's cost, Mask of Laughter takes another 500 points of damage--as the fire from it fades out around him, the Fool Clown that had been on his Disk from the start of the shot suddenly vanishes as soon as it's visible through the fire again, leaving a hole in his Disk that shows the background behind it. Fixed this in AfterEffects, applying my proxy and applying motion tracking to track the shot's movement as it shook around (which did pretty well overall given the fading fire obscuring some pixels) adjusting the brightness on it as the fire fades out, while also applying a solid color layer which I used to mask in some recreated fire lighting on top of the proxy for blending, fading it out as the fire faded.
A bit later, as Jim's about to play his first Time Stream, we quickly zoom up from his Disk to his upper body as he does so, but he's missing his just-summoned Cenozoic Fossil Warrior Skull Pawn in Monster Zone #4 on his Disk when we see it. Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a proxy, giving it some blurring to blend it in with the motion blurring going on.
A few seconds later, as Jim finishes explaining Time Stream's effect, joined on a split-screen by Mask of Anger, he declares his summoning of Mesozoic Fossil Warrior Skull King as their split-screen splits apart, but two things happen: 1) for the first frame of the slide-out, Jim's split is missing its border, and 2) the split-out itself lasts only two more frames. Fixed both in Vegas by re-doing their split-out to be a more fluid 7-8 frames long as they usually are, fixing #1 in the process by making sure Jim's split holds onto its border.
A bit later, after Jim's Skull King destroys Angered Anchor Knight and Mask of Anger uses his effect to bring him back, Jim says he was waiting for that; a confused Anger slides in for a split-screen as Jim explains that Skull King can attack twice and deal piercing damage, causing Anger to gasp and Jim to slide him off their split-screen to have Skull King's second King Swordplay attack happen--all the while, two things happen: 1) Jim moves for their split-screen a frame before Anger starts to slide into place, and 2) the border between them is still there in the first frame as their split-out starts, with their split-out lasting only three more frames. Fixed these in Vegas by first redoing Anger's slide-in to be timed with Jim moving for it, applying some motion blurring on his redone split for blending in the initial few frames, then by redoing their slide-out to be a more fluid eight or so frames as usual, fixing the ghost border issue in the process and timing it so that Anger's fully offscreen as Jim first moves to order Skull King's second attack.
A few scenes later, after Mask of Anger's LP hit zero and Teraoka is freed, Jim exhales in relief as everyone behind him cheers his win, though he's missing Skull King on his still-active Disk in Monster Zone #4. Fixed in AfterEffects by applying a proxy, applying gradual Gaussian blurring as the perspective transitions from him to everyone behind him.
A bit later, during Johan's last turn, Mask of Apathy tries to activate another Silent Magic Card from his hand in response to Johan activating Ruby's effect Special-Summoning his other Gem Beasts, but Johan slides in on a split-screen for a retort, saying that he won't be breaking his Ruby--though a few things happen as Apathy gasps and Johan slides him off the split-screen to use Rainbow Ruins's negate effect: 1) Johan's lip flaps end a second or two before he finishes his line, and 2) Mask of Apathy is moved within his split a frame before he starts to properly slide offscreen as Johan moves. Fixed both in Vegas, first by masking in a few extra lip flaps to fit the end of Johan's line, then by redoing Apathy's split's slide-out so that he slides out as he was during the full split-screen.
Honorary Mentions for the one error as Rei calls out to Napoleon after the eyecatch as they run down a hallway and her jacket is drawn with short sleeves (when her jacket's sleeveless), as well as the one while Judai, Rei, and Pharaoh run up to Martin and Napoleon near the end where the animation team didn't color in the end of Pharaoh's tail (I probably could've handled this one as it was a seven-frame job, but not being able to properly tell the spiky bits of his tail apart, I thought to leave it).
🎉 NEW GAME: Introduce your mutuals to everyone and what do you think of them? 🎉
oH HEY! Looks like I missed this one question. Let introduce you to my awesome mutuals @riniloves : Rini are you still here? I miss you! Met Rini back then in 2010~2012 (?) We both loved LuluCC (Code Geass) and Kuraneon HxH)! Apparently, our prediction about LuluCC living together has became true in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;Surrection(2019), despite many oddities present and debates. So did Sessrin in Inuyasha. Awesome huh!
@unuxunu : My fellow OT3 Kuraneokuro shipper. Sweetest person I’ve met in the internet! I met her in ffnet in 2020 when I thought I was the only one left on this earth who actively shipped Kuraneon.(thanks Marriage of Convenience fic) We both are kinda inactive and moving on to another fandom now, but I will never forget the moment bitter world has turned sweet when I am with you T^T We created so much things together. Also she invented the idea of cloud gallery of our OT3 religion... What can I do without you girl? @senorita-jackalope : oh girl where are you? My fellow Kuraneon shipper and fellow Neon lover(YES WE ARE GAY FOR NEON SLURP SLURP). We also created so much things together. Unfortunately she deactivated her blog. Hope you will come back someday senorita-jackalope. @nikushimi-wa-kienai : Also my fellow Kuraneon shipper. Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for this ship. Your works has inspired me to be active in this subfandom ^_^ @fluffygreenkoala : My fellow Kuroneon shipper! Your ideas has helped me created many beautiful Kuroneon art, thank you so much! (And they got 30+ likes and bookmark in Japanese art platform, yay to our teamwork!) @thelovelyghostwriter : If people are looking for something new to worship, now this is the mutual I would recommend to them! Because girl, I LITERALLY WORSHIP YOUR WORKS!!!! (STRANGE BEDFELLOWS, everyone, also @hunterexamcheatsheet). I remembered when you first commented in my MoC fic, my first impression was “Wow I like this girl, she is smart.”. But man you were more than just smart. You literally materializes what I tried to envision for the last 20 years(yes including the innocence day where I didn’t know the term HATESEX yet) and I am so thankful for your presence. I’m so glad someone finally gets the logic of my theory. Pure Genius Girl. Lion-vomiting-water country didn’t ranks third globally in time spent on homework for nothing in 2014. huh? So many things we did together : fanfic, perfecting Kuraneon theory, and punching bullies virtually. As citizen of neighbouring countries, we have close timezone and communicate a lot too beyond just ships.
@bat-belen : Fellow Kuraneon and Kuroneon shipper. Thanks for filling in gap time when I wasn’t active with Kuraneo Week 2021 ^_^ Also thanks for making art of my OTP. Hope you’re always healthy and well! @dukina : Hi Kina! How are you ^_^ I haven’t seen you around in my dash(and I checked you’re hiatus atm)  I hope you’re doing fine there. Dukina is the first to introduce me to selfship (Oh yea, meet my husband Pariston Hill). It’s fun in the office when both our husbands are present! Her beautiful purple blog is so iconic.
@itsmyara : No.1 HisoMachi shipper! We have same view when it comes to fandom and I’m so inspired by her because not only writing fanfic, Myara also drew and make moodboards. I stumbled upon Myara when I first read her Kuraneon fic in AO3. I don’t speak  Brazilian Portuguese  so I used google translate to read it. And boy the fic is so good that I must now admit that I downloaded it.
@cocogum : Coco first approached me regarding my “Neon alive” theory and honestly I REALLY APPRECIATE that. So many people shut down that possibility before even reading the argument or understanding both Kurapika and Hisoka’s characer. Plus we’ve seen Togashi’s false narrative in writing more than TWICE (Ging’s death by Mito and Kite death by Neferpitou). so thank you so much Coco! Coco writes theory and makes cool edits @cautionworks (CMIIW and sorry if it’s not you) so you guys should check it out. Another initial thought is WOW Coco ships Killuretz! I’m so happy my Killuretz art got appreciation after being dusty for a long time in dA!  @cybercowboyduck : My POKESHIPPING fellow! We’ve only met like two or three weeks ago but we had a 34 pages+ of discussion already I think?? Thank you so much for supporting my artworks and article!! Also for filling in informations and trend where I was a silent reader in Pokeani fandom. I love how calm you react to bullies in this bully-prone area lol @hollylu-ships-it : Hi Holly, I hope you don’t mind me tagging you in this although we rarely interact. When I first checked your account. Wow, actually I already consumed your fanarts since back then, when I wasn’t active in Pokeani fandom. (Your Pokeshipping motorcyle date.)  Thank you so much for reblogging my SunMo article ^_^ I love your art and blog so much! @barbiedisneyavenger @fierydense @ultimateoptimus Hey new mutuals! Nice to meet you. We rarely interact but it seems that we share common interest.  Hope y’all healthy and safe wherever you are. Cheers! Sorry I can’t be short about this, I really appreciate you guys for sharing the same taste in ships and character with me.
For you I apologize if my blog isn’t up to expectations. I take no personal offense if you ever unfollow me due to my non-fandom/personal post that I rb/posted.(Also cause sometimes I reply to discourse) . After all we all have to take care of our own mental health.
I am just indulging in the present about how blessed I am to have wonderful internet mutuals :)
So many books are launching this week! Are any of these YA books on your TBR pile? What have you been reading lately?
Fireworks by Alice Lin
Seventeen-year-old Lulu Li has her last summer before college all planned out. But her plans go awry when she learns that Kite Xu, her old next-door neighbor and childhood friend, will be returning home from South Korea.
Lulu hasn’t seen Kite since eighth grade, after he left the country to pursue a career in K-pop, eventually debuting in the boy group Karnival. When Karnival announces that Kite will be taking a break from K-pop activities for mysterious reasons, the opportunity to rekindle their friendship arises.
Star-struck and nostalgic, Lulu tries to reconnect with Kite. As they continue to bond and reminisce over the past, Kite’s sister, Connie, warns Lulu not to get too close to her brother. The harder Lulu tries to deny her feelings, the stronger they get. But how could a K-pop star ever fall for a nobody from home? And even if he did, is there any way for their relationship to end but badly?
TJ Powar Has Something to Prove by Jesmeen Kaur Deo
When TJ Powar—a pretty, popular debater—and her cousin Simran become the subject of a meme: with TJ being the “expectation” of dating an Indian girl and her Sikh cousin who does not remove her body hair being the “reality”—TJ decides to take a stand.
She ditches her razors, cancels her waxing appointments, and sets a debate resolution for herself: “This House Believes That TJ Powar can be her hairy self, and still be beautiful.” Only, as she sets about proving her point, she starts to seriously doubt anyone could care about her just the way she is—even when the infuriating boy from a rival debate team seems determined to prove otherwise.
As her carefully crafted sense of self begins to crumble, TJ realizes that winning this debate may cost her far more than the space between her eyebrows. And that the hardest judge to convince of her arguments might just be herself.
This essential and beautifully written collection immerses and surprises with each turn of the page.
Zyla & Kai by Kristina Forest
While on a school trip to the Poconos Mountains (in the middle of a storm) high school seniors, Zyla Matthews and Kai Johnson, run away together leaving their friends and family confused. As far as everyone knows, Zyla and Kai have been broken up for months. And honestly? Their break up hadn’t surprised anyone. Zyla and Kai met while working together at an amusement park the previous summer, and they couldn’t have been more different.
Zyla was a cynic about love. She’d witnessed the dissolution of her parents’ marriage early in life, and it left an indelible impression. Her only aim was graduating and going to fashion school abroad. Until she met Kai.
Kai was a serial monogamist and a hopeless romantic. He’d put a temporary pause on his dating life before senior year to focus on school and getting into his dream HBCU. Until he met Zyla.
Alternating between the past and present, we see the love story unfold from Zyla and Kai’s perspectives: how they first became the unlikeliest of friends over the summer, how they fell in love during the school year, and why they ultimately broke up… Or did they? Romantic, heart-stirring and a little mysterious, Zyla & Kai will keep readers guessing until the last chapter.
Empress Crowned in Red (Witches Steeped in Gold #2) by Ciannon Smart
Iraya, her revenge taken and magic unfettered, turns her sights on a bigger goal: freeing Aiyca for the Obeah. But first she must shed the guise of the rogue warrior and become the Lost Empress her people need.
Jazmyne has crowned herself the doyenne and is prepared to go to extreme lengths—and court ruthless danger—to prove to her people she deserves the throne.
But there is more at stake than Jazmyne or Iraya know: a new threat is awakening on the other side of the island that could destroy everything they’ve been fighting for. Trust is scarce, and betrayal a breath away. But Iraya and Jazmine once again find themselves turning to each other—after all, better the witch you know than the nightmare you don’t.
The Signs and Wonders of Tuna Rashad by Natasha Deen
Let’s be clear. No matter what her older brother, Robby, says, aspiring screenwriter Tuna Rashad is not “stupidstitious.” She is, however, cool with her Caribbean heritage, which means she is always on the lookout for messages from loved ones who have passed on. But ever since Robby became a widower, all he does is hang out at the house, mock Tuna for following in their ancestors’ traditions, and meddle in her life.
Tuna needs to break free from her brother’s loving but over-bearing ways and get him a life (or at least, get him out of hers!). Based on the signs, her ancestors are on board. They also seem to be on board with helping Tuna win over her crush, Tristan Dangerfield. The only hiccup? She has to do it before leaving for college in the fall. A ticking clock, a grief-stricken brother, and a crush who doesn’t believe in signs. What could possibly go wrong?
If You Still Recognise Me by Cynthia So
Elsie has a crush on Ada, the only person in the world who truly understands her. Unfortunately, they’ve never met in real life and Ada lives an ocean away. But Elsie has decided it’s now or never to tell Ada how she feels. That is, until her long-lost best friend Joan walks back into her life.
In a summer of repairing broken connections and building surprising new ones, Elsie realises that she isn’t nearly as alone as she thought. But now she has a choice to make…
✶ 𝐇𝐗𝐇 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐒: 𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 & 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒, 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇 & 𝐃𝐀𝐌𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍   Long story short, I have been thinking about this for wayyyyy too long now and wanted to get some ~thoughts~ & analysis written down! This post is going to be...fairly long, lol. Apologies in advance :D
  Also, if you can’t see the last gif (the one for ‘holy’), click here. Tumblr keeps fucking up the image when i try to upload it :////
  This post is probably going to be about 2/3 yorknew & phantom troupe/kurapika focused, 1/3 chimera ants, maybe with some references to other arcs (including manga-only arcs) mixed in. so, ofc, tons of spoilers ahead! also, i realize that my blog theme is hard to read (and i’m p sure clicking ‘keep reading’ sends you to the og post itself), so i’m linking the post w/ full text copy/pasted in on my art backup side blog (which has a more legible font) here.
✶ 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇   I’m sure absolutely nobody is surprised with me starting here - there is just. SO. MUCH. DEATH. in hxh. & right from the start, one thing I noticed that togashi really emphasized was the #4 and its connection to death. in japanese, chinese, and im p sure some other asian cultures the number 4 is pronounced like the word for death so it’s associated with death in general, and boy oh boy does the ‘deadly number 4′ thing show up E V E R Y W H E R E. we get to the hunter exam, and hisoka is applicant #44. kurapika is #404. i didn’t notice it at first, but this was so intentional holy shit. togashi is NOT SUBTLE.
  So pika & hisoka are, right off the bat, associated with death. okay. and then there are even more clues to drive the point home: hisoka is member #4 in the phantom troupe, kurapika’s birthday is april 4th (aka 4/4). 100% not a coincidence (!!). with hisoka, it’s pretty obvious why togashi’s throwing all this death 444444 stuff around - dude is a psycho murder pedo clown, literally gets off on killing people (and there’s also the fact that judas sits 4th from the left in the last supper painting, and he’s sort of the judas equivalent for the phantom troupe). with kurapika, though, it’s a bit more subtle and woven deeper into his characterization, which i LOVE. togashi puts the mans in blue & gold & white (traditionally ‘pure’ or ‘heavenly’ colors), makes him so fucking kind & so good-hearted.....when he’s not relentlessly pursuing his revenge, ofc. more on this in the next section, but pika = death. togashi has made that v v v clear.
  Backtracking a bit to hisoka, though, I also just wanted to point out the 4 is death symbolism in the fortunes too (GOD i love the fortunes): in one translation, he’s the false fourth moon, and in the og japanese (i think), he’s the false hare (4th in the lunar zodiac or w/e it’s called. i don’t know the japanese cultural influences here, but in the chinese legend that established the zodiac animals, they race across the heavenly river & the top 12 animals got zodiac slots. the hare finished 4th, so it’s #4 in the cycle).
  And just as a final note, Tserriednich is the fourth prince of the kakin empire, and also another dude who has a hard-on for murder & other gory shit. again: togashi is not subtle with this, lmfao
✶ 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐘, 𝐔𝐍𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐘   As probably everyone who’s gotten to yorknew knows, togashi is so 0 fucks given when he wants to be. I mean there’s the whole thing where he just. took New York and decided, Yorknew. LMFAO, but also, he made the main antag of that arc be named chrollo lucilfer, sit around in a ruined church, have a reversed cross coat, pale & dark-haired/dark-eyed, generally dressed in dark colors, very terrible murder guy. liiiike......chrollo x devil symbolism game is 1000/10 at this point lmaooo
  And i know absolutely nothing about christianity in general, but pt/kurapika & yorknew arc is just so full of christian imagery/symbolism! one thing that i L O O O O O O V E though is how togashi really blurs the traditional christian-coded good/evil, holy/damned boundaries.
  Back to kurapika: he wears gold and blue, his coloring is very stereotypically ‘angelic’, he’s precious and good and kind. his chains are all about ~judgment~ and ~healing~ - some of the chains are also in literal cross shapes, aren’t they? And the chain dagger in his own heart...the imagery is very startlingly similar to the immaculate heart of mary, where the swords stabbing thru the heart apparently represent seven sorrows. IDK much about this stuff other than the visual similarities; literally had to google ‘daggers through heart christianity?’ to even get the name of that thing LOL. anyway, at first, it seems like togashi establishes him as the ‘angel’, the ‘good’, the ‘holy’ in the angel/devil, good/evil, holy/damned dichotomy between him and chrollo.
  But that’s not the end of the story. his entire storyline is driven by a huuuuuuuge giant desire for vengeance, first of all, and then there’s the scarlet eyes, which canonically are seen as demonic/cursed/what have you (according to one of the movies or smth? where they show pika as a 10 y/o?), and then we also have red eyes in modern culture being associated w pretty much the same thing (vampires, anyone?). the fight scene with uvo has everything in b&w besides the blood on his face & his red eyes & the moon (<<< more fortune foreshadowing & symbolism, i love to see it), and there are tonssss of scenes where he has to suppress his rage. so all of that is obviously not very angelic of him i would say LOL. in fact, what i find super interesting is that the scarlet/red eyes (which are ‘demonic’) is actually the driving factor behind his super powerful nen abilities; this ties in so well with the fortunes & death associations imo! the fortunes call him the ‘death-bringer’ in one translation, or ‘half-angel, half-death’, so that’s one side of pika = red eyes = death, but there’s also the fact that emperor time is literally draining his life force. so pika = death for both himself and others namely the pt, question mark?
  Now for chrollo: togashi’s devil symbolism is EXTREMELY overt with him, but i love the subtler jesus references too. the church thing, obviously, and the st. peters cross which is cuz st peter respected jesus too much & didn’t think he was worthy to die in the same way as him (or something like that, i am the most atheist person in the world & hxh is literally my entire christian education pls) but is also used as an anti-christianity symbol these days. bandit’s secret looks like a bible, lbr, and mans has a cross tattoo.
  Other things beyond visuals - 12 spiders, 12 apostles; hisoka’s betrayal, where member #4 can be thought to correspond to judas sitting 4th from left at last supper. and this miiiiight be a bit of a stretch, but i think the meteor city being the place of origin may also play into the blurred line between angel/devil and holy/damned here; meteors are defined as space rocks that are in earth’s atmosphere, becoming incandescent in the process. meteorites are for the kinds that actually reach the ground. and idk, lucifer was cast out of heaven / sky too right? so i think there might be some subtle fallen angel imagery/symbolism playing into the pt as well
✶ 𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 (𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐊𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒)   Last section yay! i don’t have as much to say about this, besides when i was making chimera ant arc edits & realized that there might have been some subtle gon/meruem parallels???
  So obviously, everyone knows that line killua says to gon - “you are light” - and then i was just remembering that meruem’s name means.... “light that illuminates all” (!!!!). maybe it’s a coincidence, but knowing togashi, i’m leaning towards nahhhh. there HAS TO be some kinda meaning there (!!).
  Going back to the events of the chimera ant arc....ooh boy. let’s see: gon is optimistic & hopeful even in the face of kite potentially being dead, killua says he’s light, they find kite & dude is fucked up, gon is pissed. gets all angry & ~dark~, especially during the palace invasion when he’s staring pitou down as she fixes up komugi. then the actual fight against pitou: more darkness, more anger, but through it all there’s still light, namely his jajanken being very orange & fiery lookin.....and that final sequence, where he puts all his possible nen he’d ever have into his ~final form~ or wahtever & turns into a male version of true form!bisky but dressed in a crop top & short-shorts (i am SCARRED, btw. s c a r r e d !). there’s just huuuge flashes of light as that’s going on, and it reminded me of supernovas or dying stars when i was thinking about it, where the star is like, collapsing under its own weight? & burning thru its own fuel, until there’s nothing left except a dwarf or black hole or what have you. one final, extremely deadly burst of light & energy before death.
  On the meruem side of things: born into a dark cave, exhibits a traditionally evil/cruel/wicked/whatever personality/traits so that has ppl associating him with darkness. then he gets to know komugi, starts to appreciate other aspects of humanity, seems like he could have actually turned into a decent person who doesn’t want to eat everyone - so that’s a ‘path to light’, maybe? - and then the extermination team yeets themselves into the palace, netero takes him out to bumfuck nowhere, they fight. netero’s fighting is just ALL light, from his giant ass golden 100-type guanyin bodhisattva to the poor man’s rose. again, there’s the sense of finality to it all, in a similar vein to dying stars: netero comes in determined to kill meruem no matter what, and we all know netero doesn’t flake. then we see netero get destroyed after the zero hand, and he triggers the rose, and everything is burning & on fire before the flames are put out and all turns dark again.
  But wait!!! pouf & youpi revive meruem and all he does is play gungi with komugi, even with the poison of the rose. he eventually dies, and the gungi pieces in that final shot of them together (i am BAWLING just thinking about it holy shit) has one that’s all white, one that’s a black ring and white inside. i assume all white is for komugi, who has never done ANYTHING wrong in her LIFE, so i like to think that the 2nd one is for meruem - born “into darkness”, literally & figuratively, but he turns something like ‘good’ by the end. it’s interesting how togashi has sort of gone for a bit of a subversion here: the hero going from light to darkness, and the main antag from darkness to light.
✶ 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍   AahhhhHHHHHhhh so if you read all the way down here through my LONG rambles, tysm! i would LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear what other people think about all this, and i’ve FOR SURE missed tons and tons of stuff - chimera ants is just. SO MUCH. and i don’t know it as well as yorknew eeek.
  I’m not sure if i’m really ~knowledgeable~ in any other areas relating to hxh, so this might be the only one of these that i do, but i definitely think about some of this - esp all the religious symbolism & #4 stuff - a ton! so in the meantime, if it’s of any interest, i’m just going to shamelessly plug my hxh x religious beliefs/superstitions edit series :D lots of love to all!!!
Coatl ctuesday!  Part 1/?
Coatls are one of my top three breeds tbh!  Love me some feathersnakes ;o;
Lore & names under the cut!
Row 1: Glacia (she/her) & Audra (she/her).  Glacia is the clan’s ice representative!  She is one of the few coatls in Thunder Hollow who have put in the years of time and effort it takes to master common draconic, and as such acts as a translator as well as a representative.  She’s also an amazing singer, performing frequently during festivals.  Audra is the wind representative!  She doesn’t have a very strong grip on common draconic but can understand it perfectly, which allows her to pursue the representative career without too much difficulty.  Glacia is her “mouthpiece” during the Councils more often than not, though Audra is still doing her best to learn!  Her hobby is kite-making and she runs a popular art program :0
Row 2: Saffron (he/him) & Jordana (she/her).  Saffron is the clan’s stoic fire ambassador as well as its resident textile expert.  He is best known for weaving exceptionally strong spidersilk cloth!  Jordana is part of the Guard, working as its support mage.  Since Thunder Hollow lacks connections to Sornieth’s ley-lines, she has had to learn rune magic (which involves imbuing objects with magic in ley-line areas and then bringing said magical items into the clan for use) to continue using her skills effectively.
Row 3: Lilian (she/her) & Quilava (she/her).  Lilian is Thunder Hollow’s resident judge.  She was fundamental in establishing the clan’s code of law and is responsible for casting judgement on any and all violations.  Quilava is the local forgemaster!  She makes everything from support structures to weapons to sculptures.
Row 4: Hau (he/him) & Proximus (he/him).  Hau works at the docks to help load and unload ships as they come into port for trade!  Proximus processes honey from local apiaries and turns it into sellable goods--especially mead.
Row 5: Leveret (she/her) & Mandan (she/her).  Leveret runs Thunder Hollow’s bookshop!  It sells books from local authors as well as more mainstream scrolls and tomes.  Mandan is a cooper, meaning that she makes barrels and crates to help both residents and clan officials package goods for shipping.
