My Back Log Of Games/Otome
I Updated So You Know Most Are In English Only A Few Are JP Only
The stress is real like I don't understand how everyone does it. I see all these games I either want or I have and just haven't the time to play them yet. Like most otome games are nearly 40 to 80 hours easily to finish all the routes which I would be ok with if it wasn;t for some otomes I buy for one or 2 characters then they end up being end game and I can't play them til like 60 hour mark within the game its like OMG. Like I have so many games in my backlog I will post them below and the time I have put in them and it leaves me overwhelmed not to mention the animes I want to watch and god forbid if I watch a anime that has an otome because then I get that too and no time to play it due to the rest of the backlog. How do some of yall prioritize ones you want to play or if there is more than one how do you choose etc.
Backlog/Games In Progress/Done (games with chat bubble in progress, star is done and the rest i have not started but own

what was your first game made with rpgmaker? (or just first finished video game in general) I’m thinking of getting rpgmaker for my first game and I know you have used rpgmaker before
Most of my first 'completed' games were a string of in-jokes, basically. I started using RPG Maker when I was maybe 9 years old and mostly I just made stupid little games to show my friends from school. The games weren't pretty, basically used stock images + pngs i found online, and weren't much to look at under the hood, but it gave kid me something to do in my off time. I didn't start actually uploading games online til I became a teenager, though.
Beyond that, I had a string of smaller projects, most of which I never finished because I'd learn so much while developing and realize I'd prefer to just scrap my work and start over. First fangame I ever made was a prototype Pokémon fangame using the essentials kit for RPG Maker that basically aimed to add more RPG elements to Pokémon. I got some neat features working, like sidequests that had choices in them + physically affected the world, each NPC having a relationship value that was determined by something in the world (like sidequest choices), even a neat thing where two factions would fight for control over cities both on-screen and off-screen using map events, with npcs/gyms switching hands. Part of it was based on cut content from Skyrim's civil war (namely the under the hood stuff that didn't make it into the game.)
It was more of a proof of concept than a whole game (just a few cities and a few routes connecting them, but I was fairly happy with how well the systems worked. None of them were any more complicated than the code I use now, really. Actually, on several occasions, I almost made a full fangame (and had pretty detailed drafts for what these could be, with a few of my collaborators from the DSaF days encouraging me to develop some of them) but after Pokemon Uranium was sent a cease and desist by Nintendo, I fully abandoned the idea and stuck with FNaF fangames.

HEARTSTEEL HEADCANONS - Games 💜💚🧡💛❤️💙
Omg it’s been 84 years since I’ve done headcanons… okay let’s go
Tumblr media
Kayn 💜
•When it comes to games, you know this man is ready to 1v1. He lives for competition and outright shenanigans.
•His favorite games are fighting games where he can just beat the crap out of his opponent. (Tekken, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, etc…)
•Other competitive games he plays are Mario Party, Mario Kart, Just Dance and even Wii Sports. (mostly when he’s with other people) Even though the last one is banned from the Heartsteel house after Kayn outright swung the Wii-mote at the TV and broke it.
Ezreal 💚
•When it comes to games, Ez likes to have a relaxing time. Be that by himself when he has the chance or with company.
•His favorite games are usually phone games he can easily access when he’s between photoshoots and rehearsals. (Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, The Sims, Mystic Messenger, Episode, etc…)
•When he’s able to sit down and play on either a console or PC, he’s entertained by spending hours torturing Sims. Or playing dress up games where he can judge other players outfits. (He’s definitely on Roblox playing Dress to Impress)
Sett 🧡
• When it comes to games, Sett is not a fan of highly attentive gameplay. Instead, he enjoys simple games with simple puzzles to solve.
•He’s a fan of visuals and just having fun along with the game. Something to wind down if he really wants to. Although sometimes throwing work out games in the mix for a change. (Kirby games, Mario games, Nintendo Switch Sports, etc…)
•He tries to game only certain days and have limits on his game time. Since he does have the tendency of playing for hours on end without even realizing it. Can’t have that happen when you have a workout schedule to maintain.
K’sante 💛
•When it comes to games, K’sante likes the story aspect of them. Getting to know the characters and find out what happens in the game is important to him.
•Along the same line as Sett, he has a set schedule for his gaming. Often enjoying cozy farming games and even sometimes indulging in role playing games (Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, etc…)
•He’d sometimes even indulge in games along with Sett like Nintendo Switch Sports and Wii Sports with Kayn. Before it was banned after Kayn broke the TV. But it’s fine, they can just play when Yone is not home to complain.
Yone ❤️
• Who let grandpa play? When it comes to games, Yone is not really good. Taking his time to learn at a pace and properly play.
•He likes turn base and strategy style games. Being able to figure out the best path for the characters and unlock the next level of any story. But he’d also enjoy little games he’s able to play on his phone. (Candy Crush, 8 ball, Solitaire)
ft. games Aphelios would hook up Yone with: Fire Emblem, Old Final Fantasy games, Octopath Traveler, Etc..
•He’d only play games once in a blue moon. And when he does, everyone in the band tries to witness like they’ve just discovered mothman. Except mothman is playing candy crush and is on level 690.
Aphelios 💙
• All is fair in love and -no, not here when it comes to games. Aphelios is very dedicated to either speedrun games or to complete it 100%
•When he’s not working on songs or sleeping, he’s playing adventure games or role play centered games with a fighting system. (Legend of Zelda, Baldurs Gate 3, Devil May Cry, etc…)
•He’s as highly competitive as Kayn is when he does dabble in fighting games every now and then. But to Kayn’s demise, Aphelios knows cheat codes and techniques from hours of playing in practice rooms.

Would anyone like my Nintendo switch friend code or perhaps my Minecraft user?
I realize that looking for people within the game is a lot harder now than back then; I just got a new switch to replace the old broken one and definitely a lot has changed

Piofiore: Fated Memories Review
Tumblr media
From the game box's summary: "Navigate a world of organized crime. Three mafia families fight for control of Burlone City, and Lili discovers she is in the center of their deadly turf wars. Her encounters lead to danger and distraction. Drawn into this shadowy world, she realizes there is no going back..."
Piofiore: Fated Memories is an Otomate game from Idea Factory, localized by Aksys Games for the Nintendo Switch.
Tumblr media
Overall Score: 8/10. I really liked the game in general--romanticized mafia is super fun! I loved the mafia premise and the thrill of illicit activities, haha. The love interests and side characters were excellent, too. The voice acting is fabulous! Two of my favorite VAs voice love interests: Showtaro Morikubo as Gilbert Redford (also voices Souji Okita in Hakuoki and Impey Barbicane in Code Realize) and Ryohei Kimura as Nicola Francesca (voices Kageyuki Shiriashi from Collar x Malice). Even fell in love with the voice acting of a new guy--Nobuhiko Okamoto as Yang (also does a side character's voice in Collar x Malice).
What I was not expecting was the somewhat heavy emphasis on Christianity and religion. That makes it sound a little more intense than I mean, but considering I wasn't expecting it at all...well. It wasn't the way one might expect, but it was enough that it was completely out of left field when I was expecting, you know, mafia. Honestly, had I known it wasn't just straight mafia, I might not have bought the game, but it was easy enough for me to ignore most of the time. There were some very--I mean very--minor translation issues, mainly typos, but it was good overall.
Tumblr media
Heroine: 6/10. To start with, my opinion of the Heroine varied depending on the route. She was my favorite in Gilbert's route, and I liked her enough in Yang's, but she was kind of pitiful in the other three (not including the Finale/Henri endings; admittedly, I didn't read the Finale). Frankly, I found myself annoyed at her most of the time. It's annoying when a character that's meant to represent the reader (as a general rule) does, says, and thinks things that I never would. She has decent points at least once in most of the routes, but especially in the beginning of each route, she's so naive it makes me want to throw up. There are in-game reasons for why this is, so I understand it, but I still dislike it.
By the end of each route, she comes to terms with the fact that she's fallen in love with an incredibly dangerous man and gets over the fact that she's inadvertently complicit in organized crime, but the road to this acceptance is long and annoying. At the end of it all, she's still a bleeding heart. Not that I really thought that would change, but still. Progress.
I'm just bored to death of many otome MCs' main (and often only) strength being strength of will and/or character. Mental and emotional toughness are good, but could the MC also be useful and have more interesting qualities? Just once, I'd love to play a badass MC, who's a bit hardened, not a bleeding heart, and isn't shocked by the sight of blood... Yeesh...
Tumblr media
Narrative: As is typical of these console games, the plot varies slightly from route to route, though there is an overarching plot. Without giving too much away, MC is Special™, and that comes out/is relevant in only 3/6 routes. All of the routes were well written, though I didn't find all of them that interesting. The overarching plot bored me to tears. I just wasn't into it. In a world of what I assumed was just your standard period mafia piece, there was a lot of weird mysticism and Christian mythology. There's not magic or anything like that, but there are sacred relics that can only be retrieved from their super secret locations with specific "ingredients," if you will. MC has one of those ingredients, and in a game where it really advertises the mafia (that's literal the entire pitch of the game, there's no mention of anything else on the game case), it feels very out of place.
I can tell they were trying to do something different with the mafia premise, and I commend the writers for that, but I think it fell a little flat. I found myself enjoying the routes where there was more of those organized crime attributes--smuggling, drug and arms dealing, counterfeiting, etc.--most, while the routes that heavily focused on MC's specialness were a slog to get through. Of course, this is my own personal opinion, so others may feel very differently. Despite that, I truly enjoyed the game and can't wait to play the sequel (fandisc)!
Tumblr media
Love Interests: I adore these characters, period. They're all very unique and interesting, even if a few weren't my type. There are technically six love interests: Nicola Francesca, Dante Falzone, Yang, Gilbert Redford, Orlok, and Henri. Gilbert is locked until you completed Nicola, Yang, Dante, and Orlok's routes, and the Finale/Henri is locked until you complete Gil's. You don't get a feel for who Henri is at all until you play the Finale route, so I personally didn't care for him. I had no vested interest in him, so full disclosure, I mostly skipped his route...
The other characters were wonderfully varied, so I think there's a personality type to suit nearly everyone. I can honestly say that, although not all of them are for me, I can pick out a quality I like in all of them. Dante is the kuudere of the guys; Gilbert is gallant and chivalrous; Yang is selfish and craves violence (in the best way, though); Nicola is a flirt; and Orlok is the quiet, shy one. Henri is mysterious, though not in an interesting way for me, personally.
Tumblr media
Game Mechanics: The "Status" page is difficult to understand, especially when you first start playing and have no idea what you're looking at. I had to look up how to interpret the status of the character. The more colorful the flower on the status page is, the higher the affection, and the clearer the page (in this case, how much blood spatter is visible) is related to the tolerance level. So, full-color flower and no blood spatters are very good.
I also don't love the Meanwhile side stories. While you're plaything through every story, periodically you'll get a pop-up that is sometimes automatic, sometimes optional, that takes you to a different perspective--something that's going on at the same time as the main story. I like the idea in theory, but it sometimes felt like they came at inopportune times and broke the story flow.
Tumblr media
Music & Art Style: The music is jaunty and fun, very 1920s jazz, screams mafia, too. If that makes sense. If you decide to play it, you'll see what I mean. The art style is beautiful! It looks very similar to, if not outright the same as, Hakuoki. Since that's the game that started my love affair with these types of games, I love that it looks so similar. The CGs are gorgeous and worth collecting all of them, so 100-percenting the game is worth it. Some of them get pretty hot, too, like aaahhhhh. So 10/10 on the art!

(Apparently Nintendo's gonna end the ability to post Switch screencaps to Twitter because of Twitter's fuckery which is gonna be a pain in the ass because that means in order to post screenshots I'll either have to do the whole thing of scanning a QR code and opening my wifi for each picture or post them to facebook and risk all the family members I'm trying to ignore on there realizing I'm not dead)

2009-2010 are *EXTREMELY BACK* on Nintendo Switch in 2024
I am loving this trend of bringing back all my favorites from 15 years ago with either new ports, remasters, remakes, or — ideally — sequels, all available to me either on the big screen or portably via my Switch.
This year ALONE is bringing:
Full remakes of the Another Code/Trace Memory duology!
A remaster of the first Epic Mickey (a.k.a. the good one)
A new sequel in my beloved Endless Ocean series!
A port of the wonderful Batman: Arkham Asylum!
Well fuck yeah, Nintendo/THQ Nordiq/Warner Bros Interactive!
Are y'all open to taking requests??? Because I have some more stuff I'd love to see hit the Switch, if possible :D
My dream list of 2009-2010 games to resurrect:
Now that Ashley Mizuki Robbins is back at long last, isn't it time to bring back the other investigator from her shared universe: Kyle motherfucking Hyde???? I want remakes of "Hotel Dusk" and "Last Window," please.
I am once again begging Konami to consider re-releasing all of their "ReBirth" games from WiiWare. Because Gradius ReBirth, Contra ReBirth, and ESPECIALLY Castlevania The Adventure ReBirth need to be accessible for modern gamers. These are EXCELLENT games. (And I'd rank them in the order I just listed in them.)
I realize that the Riddick/Pitch Black franchise isn't exactly hot-n-fresh right now, but I would ADORE having a portable version of "The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena"
I wonder if Sega would remaster/re-release the "Sonic Storybook series" games? Because I have unreasonable fondness for Sonic & The Black Knight in particular. (But plz do a better job than y'all did remastering Sonic Colors)
The easiest one of all: JUST FRIGGIN' BRING LAST YEAR'S REMASTER "Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana" TO THE WEST IN ENGLISH PLEASE

Splatoon 3 Side Order Theory #4: Coming Soon to a Nintendo Switch Near You? (Release Date Speculation) (Mild Spoilers!)
Hey everyone! With news about next season on the horizon, I kind of want to speculate about when we're gonna get more Side Order news since there is some evidence that could support the idea of Side Order coming out fairly soon (besides the fact that next season is S3's 1st anniversary)! Anyways, let's begin...
So some time ago (either in June or July), people have datamined strands of code relating to Side Order, with some of these strands dating as far back at almost a year ago (the Splatfest World Premiere, in which people also found some of the music that'd be used for regular online battles and such). More and more strands of code were added into S3, including strands revolving around bosses (internal names being ball king and tower king) and strands implying that we'd be going up a tower in order to progress through the story (which could definitely be the case considering that in other languages the name of Side Order is typically along the lines of Order Tower and Tower of Order). However, during the Vanilla v Strawberry v Mint Chip splatfest, these files were hidden. You'd think that Nintendo would hide these files faster, right? And not take almost half a year to realize they were leaking stuff for the DLC? Hell, we even know what some of the rewards for Side Order are (some gear and Inkopolis Square, for those who aren't aware). If the files were only hidden recently, there's a possibility that the devs are putting in stuff like models, cutscenes, and such to the game's files, more spoiler-y stuff that they really don't want us to see. No models were found in the initial datamine, so it's likely that all traces of the Side Order strands were hidden so they could be added.
With this being said, when do I think Side Order could come out? I feel like we could see Side Order launch sometime in the next two seasons, considering what we know about the strands. We have two bosses, one of which potentially being the final boss, strands for new enemies, files for level types, and even the rewards for completing the DLC, possibly more since the files were recently hidden from public eye. It's likely that perhaps we could get Side Order next season, but that's just me hoping for new content (Sizzle Season was pretty boring, in my opinion). Anyways, when do y'all think Side Order will be coming out? Tell me in the comments/reblogs!

Review for Kaeru Batake de Tsukamaete
Oop, didn't mean for this space to collect this much dust! Anyway ~Let’s start off positively w/a glowing review of Kaeru Batake de Tsukamaete! This is an Otome game originally released for the PS2 on April 28th, 2010. It has since been ported to PSP, PS Vita, & the Nintendo Switch. I played on my scritched up Vita for the sole purpose of a platinum trophy. If I had to say, this title’s key features are the comedy beats, as well as the unique take on Japanese mythology. Also, environmentalism plays a big part in the story, so if you’ve been looking for a game that says “go green!” this is for you!
***Warning: Includes cursed mini games. Depending on if you want to unlock every bonus (this is more an issue if you’re going for a platinum trophy on the vita), I recommend not skipping these even after the option pops up after your 1st run. I messed this up b/c I didn’t know you were penalized w/lower points for skipping (even w/the auxiliary magatama u can get from Tokunami’s shop), meaning I had to go back to replaying just for the mini games until I racked up enough points - rinse, wash, repeat.***
If any of the key words I’ve said at the top sound up your alley, and playing through grindy mini games doesn’t turn you off, give this game a try! As far as Japanese goes - and, yes, sadly, this is a (as of right now) Japanese only title - I would say a mid-upper level of N3 will get you through the game, though you might be slightly thrown off w/what characters are even saying, b/c the comedy is heavily dialogue based & these characters throw quips around like there’s no tomorrow. I loved it, but there were definitely a couple times where I was like, what is he even saying?? Wtf are they even talking about??? I think once you get comfy w/the flow of the writing, it isn’t so bad? The game does from time to time use uncommon kanji, but I always experience this w/any untranslated material, tbh. Always have an e-dictionary/internet beside u like me lol.
Synopsis: So what is this game about? The story revolves around a high school girl, Fuu Sugano , a 1st year who is also a member of her school’s broadcasting club. And Fuu… is amazing! Never have I loved an mc as much as her since Cardia from Code: Realize. She often uses old-fashioned, masculine coded speech, to the point of being considered samurai-like to those around her. She is also quite the proactive lead, asking questions that’re straight to the point, and usually being the first to act. A very cool & upfront girl. Back to the story: Fuu & her broadcasting members - mostly her senior, Ren Norizuki - want to broadcast about the “7 mysteries of Tsukiyado,” w/one conveniently located on the school grounds. When they investigate (read: wreck) the school shrine, she, 2 of her club members, & 2 other boys get wrapped up in a purple mist, & magically get turned into frogs. This is where a talking cat spirit(?) named Touya Tokunami swoops in and helps them turn back into humans on one condition: help clean up the city of Tsukiyado. This is what kicks off the plot, and brings up the main theme of the game: environmentalism. From here on, these kids are forced to live & work together in order to fully turn back into humans, as Tokunami can only change their appearance, not fully break their curse - yet. W/the help of their teachers & eventually 3rd yr senior, these kids work on fixing their town - and themselves - in the process. I think this is as much as I can say w/o reaching into spoiler territory? Idk, for some people, I’m pretty sure whatever I’ve babbled on already runs into spoiler territory... Moving on! (I have no remorse)
Characters: I’ll only be listing off the main love interests:
Ren Norizuki(va: Tsubasa Yonaga):
a 2nd year & the leader of the broadcasting club. Tries to be a dependable leader, but is just too cute live! … has the tendency to drop one thing & move onto the next. Can talk to cats.
Yuuki Hirose(va: Miyu Irino):
a ‘plain’ 1st year & a member of the broadcasting club - a “nice guy” (*pfft*). Refers to himself as an 「雨男」 - lit. ‘rain man.’ Means someone who is unlucky w/the weather/seems to bring the rain w/them whenever they go out.
Mukuto Hamura(va: Noriaki Sugiyama):
a 1st year wise-cracker that always finds a way to interpret others actions/words negatively; the resident tsundere (read: pain in the a*s). The other member of the beautification committee.
Masaomi Kuga (va: Daisuke Kishio):
our last 1st year & quite the timid one, especially w/girls & women. The real ‘heart’ of the group. Loves cats, but cats don’t love back - the true woobie dilemma. Member of the beautification committee.
Misaki Maibara (va: Mitsuaki Madono):
26 years old, the teacher in charge of supervising the broadcasting club. A weirdo.  1st to bring up lewd/sexual comments.
Akimori Togami (va:  Katsuyuki Konishi):
Last, & certainly least, the class president; a 3rd year. A weirdo. Is always the loudest in the group; always manages to bring up red flags regarding his background. Special technique: bondage.
As far as play goes, the boys are split into 3 common routes after the main common route, if this makes sense: the ‘broadcasting’ route (Ren/Hirose), the ‘friendship’ route (Mukuto/Masaomi), & the ‘bonds’ route (Togami/Misaki). Around the 19th/20th day (yes, everything that happens in this story takes place w/in a month) is when the route starts to split again.
As recommended play order, I only strongly advise you save Ren for last - he has the longest route in general, more lovey-dovey scenes, & has the more intense climax, imo. A pretty freaky bad ending, too! Everyone else you can play in whatever order. I only regret playing Misaki’s route later (played his as my 4th route) b/c it brings up some interesting background info I kinda would’ve liked to see earlier. So if you think like me, I loosely recommend this order:
Masaomi > Misaki > Mukuto > Yuuki > Togami > Ren
I recommend this pattern of separating the characters w/shared common routes just b/c a lot of events overlap, so if you don’t wanna feel sick & tired of hearing the same thing 2x in a row/skipping every shared scene, this is probably for the best. If you want to quickly finish up the game, disregard everything I’ve said & play in pairings like this:
Masaomi/Mukuto > Misaki/Togami > Yuuki > Ren
This is a game where I like almost all the characters, even the side characters. The side characters were always fun to talk to & interact with, always put me in a good mood🤗 But! My least fav is Togami. I mean, I kinda like him? But mostly don’t😂 I like that he’s a loud, outrageous character, but I don’t like how he often uses force on Fuu in his route. His kiss scene felt the most offensive to me. If you are also bad w/this kind of stuff, I honestly recommend force skipping most of his route - he has the least romance, & most of what is explained in Misaki’s is re-explained in his (& vice-versa, I guess), & I didn’t feel much was expanded upon either. This is probably the most red flag of a route in the game, unless you’re a hardcore teacher hater. For me, teacher routes often feel like a waste of space, as they usually follow a trend of being the most chaste, even though it’s usually the most forbidden relationship in a school setting. I find this weird & super boring; it’s a kinky trope (to me), so where is my smutty fix? …Misaki’s route follows this pattern, so I can’t say I fully enjoyed his & Fuu’s relationship buildup, even though I do like Misaki as a character. He & Togami should’ve just stayed side characters😛 Give more to the main boys, please! My fav boys? Yuuki is my fav, but I love Ren as well. Felt like the broadcasting group had the strongest writing in general. Mukuto is a tsundere till the end, which I hate, so it took extra time for me to actually like him. He did grow on me, but I do not have the urge to replay any of his scenes atm. Masaomi is just too shy, I guess? B/c of his shyness, his & Fuu’s development feels very much like being a supportive friend than romantic partner, so I can’t say I love him as an li😅 But he is still a very good boy!
As for the story, I’d rather this blog not be used for point-by-point plot/event recitation, & there are already other blogs out there that have that anyways. I would rather discuss what does/doesn’t work, what I feel is lacking/what the game excels at, presentation, etc; the broader strokes, if you will. As I’ve said before, comedy is this game’s strength, which can sometimes feel like a detriment to the story’s flow, especially for the climax. Most of the game is spent on bringing the main cast together to be a solid group, & later building Fuu’s & her li’s bond. So when the rising conflict happens per route, it almost always felt very sudden. I felt Mukuto’s route handled this the worst, so just be prepared for major whiplash if you decide to do his first. This is what happened for me. The other routes felt like they did a better job w/this, especially Yuuki’s, Misaki’s, & Ren’s routes. The romance is very light (read: no steam/little spice), but I like seeing cute relationships, so I have no complaints. Just know that you’re mostly getting an oddball high school romance w/this game. Music is pretty good! Wish we heard more of the serious/atmospheric stuff, b/c those were the ones I liked the most, but there just aren’t a lot of serious parts to this story, so I understand why they weren’t used that much😅 The system is very interesting: It feels very utilitarian by design, but still has many functions that many vn’s still lack to this day. This includes skipping to next unread scene & skipping to next choice selection. Trust me, you will love that u have this option, especially since no matter what route you’re on, a lot of stuff just overlaps until the more serious parts come into play. As for the art… I love the sprites & the many expressions each character has. But the cgs? Can’t say I love many, but there are some pretty amazing ones as well - I’d rather money go into writing/system improvements, anyways. Pretty art just makes me buy a game w/o thinking😂
So if you’re someone that likes their media to be as seriously as you take it, you might feel this game is almost like an insult, but if you’re someone like me who doesn’t give a sh*t & just wants a good time, this game is definitely for you! That’s not to say there isn’t any substance to this game - all the mythology/background stuff was really interesting to listen to, & I like the creators’ take on how to be better to each other & the world. Yes, this a tree-hugger’s kind of game, I make no excuses😆 Is it a preachy kind of game? Dk, dc. Couldn’t really tell you if the themes/messages will rub you the wrong way, since I’m not a climate change denier nor am I a useless doomer. All I can say is that if you want a game set in summer, w/Japanese mythology behind an urban background, w/top tier comedic timing & just a little mystique/horror added for spice, check out Kaeru Batake de Tsukamaete!

I’ve been experimenting with another read later app called Flyleaf this week. I’m finding I love Plinky for saving links to articles, mainly about development, I can read at anytime. I normally do this with Notion but Plinky is really great at it.
As for read later style apps, Flyleaf does a great job stripping away all the cruft and presents text in a way that’s easy to read with my aging eyes. 👀
I realized a couple days back that Kim and I graduated from high school 40 years ago. That’s wild. That means we celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary this August. 40 is just around the corner. 😳
I’ve added a new feature to Stream for my friend Ashur Cabrera. It allows you to invoke a custom URL scheme to make Stream add a new subscription. Kind of easy to do and the code was in really good shape to make it easy. Ashur did find a bug so I’m off exploring that and I ran into a crashing bug just running Stream in the usual way. It all seems to stem from building with Xcode 16.x. I managed to easily fix it on iOS but iPadOS still crashes. That has to do with my Split View and how it’s being created. It’s a weird one. I’ll get it fixed soon, I hope, so I can finish off this new feature. 😃
Enjoy the links.

My biggest takeaway from WWDC 2025 is that Apple seemingly took some lessons to heart from its unfulfilled promises of a year ago. This year’s WWDC wasn’t merely focused on what Apple is confident it can ship in the next 12 months, but on what they can ship this fall. I might be overlooking a minor exception or two, but every major feature announced in the WWDC 2025 keynote was both demonstratable in product briefings, and is currently available in the developer beta seeds. I was also told, explicitly, by Apple executives, that Apple plans to ship everything shown last week in the fall.
It seems Apple’s gonna give us a bit of Apple Intelligence with Xcode, which is really nice, and better support in Shortcuts to really make your apps shine. But one of the things I’m actually super interested to try is the on device models. I think Stream could use it for a recommendation system. We’ll see.
Oh, right, and that whole Liquid Glass thing is happening too.
My hope is to get Stream for iOS updates to Liquid Glass and add a recommended feeds list that is hand curated and generated using on device models. That should make for a swell update.

Scientists have spent four years diving deep into the world of remote work and stumbled upon a powerful truth: working from home genuinely makes us happier.
I could’ve told you that. 😃 But I have been thinking about going to the office one or two days a week.

I use AI a lot for work, pretty much all day every day. I use coding assistants and custom agents I’ve built. I use AI to help code review changes, dig into bugs, and keep track of my projects. I’ve found lots of things it’s very helpful with, and lots of things it’s terrible at. If there’s one thing I have definitely learned: it does not work the way I imagined. And the more folks I talk with about it, the more I find it doesn’t work like they imagine, either.
Pretty long post but worth a bit of time.
I’m not using LLMs for that much in my day-to-day dev work, yet, but I continue to use it for generating scripts and finding good answers to strange bugs in code. I’ll probably use it to help solve the iPadOS bug in Stream, since it just cropped up after updating to a newer version of Xcode since I last released it.

While more than 3.5 million people have spent the last couple of weeks glued to a brand-new Nintendo Switch 2, X user PatRyk (@Patrosi73) decided to invest their time elsewhere: trying to run iOS on the original Nintendo Switch. And they did it! Sort of.
I love hearing about folks hacking stuff into place to make things work where they shouldn’t. This is a prime example of that hacker spirit.

Microsoft is unveiling its own command-line text editor at its Build conference today. Edit on Windows will be accessible by using “edit” in a command prompt, allowing developers to edit files within the command line. It’s part of several improvements aimed at bettering the Windows experience for developers.
Since Microsoft has embraced open source tooling, Linux, and Mac more they seem to have gone back to more command like tools development. They did a brand new shell, that can host other shell types, and now they’re building a brand new command line editor? Wild. 😃
Can you make it compatible with Brief? 🙏🏼

The module looks nothing like an iPhone. It intentionally resembles the broadcast camera module, and Apple even had to match the weight so that its version wouldn’t alter a car’s specs. The inside, however, is completely different. (Apple gave us a peek during WWDC last week alongside an F1 car.)
It’s too bad this quality of video isn’t streamed out of the current camera setups on the cars.
Maybe that’ll be the next “big thing.” Go Pro like devices that stream super high quality video?

Rather than pausing new investments or considering divestment, many pension officials and asset managers are instead pressing Tesla’s boardto get Elon Musk to return to working full-time at the company, as if the core problem is simply that Musk is too distracted. However, this assertion overlooks a far more serious problem: Musk’s reputation is so tarnished that Tesla won’t be able to thrive as long as he remains the CEO.
Musk needs to go so Tesla can be remade into a great company.

We’re already well into 2025, and it has been a huge start to the year for Mastodon. We want to bring you an overdue update on exactly what we’re working on, from a strategic perspective.
It’s great to see Mastodon charging forward. We absolutely need this open ecosystem for social networks.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said Tuesday that the company expects artificial intelligence “will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains” over time.
“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people do other types of jobs,” Jassy added in a memo to Amazon’s workforce.
I’ve had really mixed feeling about “AI” (I don’t find it to be intelligent, at all.) at WillowTree we’ve been pushing hard on using these LLM services to help us move faster. Hey, we’re in the client services business, we have to move fast. And the more I learn about it the more I’ve come to realize it’s just a really good sidekick. We will continue to need to think through problems and come up with interesting designs and solutions because these services only “know” what they’re trained against. We still need to invent new things, right? It’s a hammer, nothing else.

I think I realize the main reason Nintendo added the new EULA...
I think I realize the main reason Nintendo added the new EULA... So if you didn't know, the Switch-2 will apparently have backwards compatibility with the original switch through emulation, not natively. I know this isn't a new thing, as they have virtual console with their older consoles on 3DS and WiiU, but the key here is EMULATION for the original switch, which Nintendo themselves developed. I know we have Yuzu and other switch emulators but let's be honest those are not perfect on PC, let alone PC handhelds. But if someone cracks the Switch-2 and studies the source-code behind the Switch emulator, it can change the game for PC and PC handhelds, hence why Nintendo is strict on modding your console or any kind of strange behavior with the Switch-2. ope i didnt realize there was a direct tomorrow. uh wishlist is hard since i want new games to be on the next console if its supposed to be beefier, but some think this is gonna be a "New" 3ds kinda route which is a choice. i dont think these would all be in one direct but fun things ive been thinking about of games i wanna play but dont exist lol i guess some super unrealistic wishes:
they lied about updating acnh and we get one more final update OR we get a fun budget spin off game. some of quality like happy home designer. maybe we are a gracie gracie apprentice and living in an apartment in a big city and design clothes. or like style savvy shop sim but with animal crossing coat of paint. kinda want a spin off more as a hold over til next game.
tomodatchi switch baby! please nintendo i need wacky high jinx with me, co workers, anime characters, and ocs.
i want more girlie girl games lmao so like a style savvy switch of course or anything that looks coded in light baby pink.
pokemon spin off remake: either mystery dungeon or rangers. i played them a lot as a kid and dont want to try and buy it now at current prices lmao.
new pokemon spin off: I want a cute girly pokemon game that the focus is on contests and looking cute. probs what they would have made when sinnoh/diamon/pearl but pls i want it (never gonna happen lmao)
i feel like there was another game but i cannot think of it at the moment

Daily Log #5
Yesterday was full of research and lots of trial and error, but I got a LOT done!
2/15:
Updated the crosshair to help with aiming
Consolidated some scattered code into one blueprint
Animated throwing the grappling hook
Added slight camera animation
Began working on swinging mechanics
Originally the dot crosshair would only appear when you looked at a grabbable object. This is, well, bad, since you can't really tell where the center of your screen is very easily.
So, I implemented an aiming crosshair that turns into a dot crosshair upon looking at a grabbable object. It's much easier to aim now!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made the crosshair out of empty image components, which didn't take long at all. Also pictured above is the code I used to switch between the two crosshairs.
Tumblr media
Results! (Note: the key inputs showing up on screen are not part of the game. I just added it for demonstration, since there's lots of clicking and dragging)
Next up, I was switching back and forth between the player character's mouse input and the grappling hook's interface functions.
It was getting really confusing, so I put all of it in the grappling hook, since the code would be useless and just take up processing power if I put it all in the player blueprint. We only need this code when the grappling hook is spawned.
Tumblr media
This is all the code I needed for the player character blueprint. Everything else is in the grappling hook blueprint.
I also turned a function I had made earlier into a custom event, since functions don't allow for delay nodes. I switched all of the in-depth code into macros as well.
Tumblr media
I haven't started working on Pull or Shot yet, but Swing is coming along nicely. Let's take a look, shall we?
Tumblr media
From left to right: Make the rope (in the player character's code) visible, attach the other end of the rope to the grappling hook, and zoom in (by changing the FOV) for a mini cutscene. By this I mean it will zoom in so you can see the hook latching onto the grabbable object.
Yes, I was indeed inspired by Wind Waker for this!
Tumblr media
Footage from Swimming Bird on YouTube, and of course the game itself is by Nintendo.
Here's what I've got so far:
Tumblr media
It's a little clonky, the rope needs more segments and a little physics adjusting, and I need to make the hook wrap around the object. At the moment it's actually following a straight line. Oh, and the end of the rope is 100 units to the side by default, which will be an easy fix.
I'm going to model some actual targets, both for ease of animation and player comprehension and recognition.
Alright, let's continue looking at the code.
Tumblr media
This continues directly after the blueprint screenshot above. From left to right, we loop a function, set a short delay, return the FOV to 90 (default), change back to the third person camera, and then attach the player character to the grappling hook.
The reason I'm connecting the player to the grappling hook is for the swing. The plan is to freeze the player character's movement and instead use the grappling hook as a pivot point for rotating the whole rope and character for the swinging animation.
Now, why didn't I use physics constraints? Simple: I couldn't figure it out!
I know how to use physics constraints, but I just couldn't figure out how to do it in runtime through blueprints.
Plus, I realized I don't want the swinging to be physics based. I need more control over where the character is going, and physics constraints would make it too chaotic and difficult to aim and swing properly.
So, I'm going to keep a small sphere mesh component hidden inside of the grappling hook model that I'll be able to pivot around without anyone seeing it.
That's about it, I think! See ya later!
