☕ I'm just curious about Mariko in this setting to be honest, you don't have to actually use my boys and girl ^^
Send me an AU verse for a drabble with Mariko and your muse based on it (mutuals only)
Tumblr media
"Oh! You two again!"
Mariko leaned over the counter to smile at the clients. It was an odd duo that kept coming to the cafe in those last days, and they couldn't be more different.
One boy was tall, muscular, with dark skin and black hair cut in a mohawk style; he almost looked scary with that perpetual frown he wore, but the whole look was softened by a pair of large ears and a constant awkward expression -- he barely ever looked at her and mostly nodded as a reply. His friend, on the other hand, seemed to have all the confidence the first guy lacked compacted in his short stature; and just as strikingly dissimilar were his skin, so pale it was almost white, and his eyes, thin and sharp and always lit with a cunning smile.
"Us two again," the latter confirmed. "The usual please."
"Sure! A double chocolate mocha with a pump of caramel, Mariko special," Mariko recalled with a smile, nodding at the tall guy, "and... a mint tea," she concluded, giving the short, pale boy a disappointed look.
"Just hot water," the pale boy precised. "I prefer to infuse the tea myself."
Mariko tilted her head. "You sure you don't want to try something tastier?"
"Absolutely sure," the pale boy smiled, his long eyes narrowing further. "I'm a tea lover. It's my friend here who has... More peculiar tastes."
Mariko frowned, unable to understand why the tall boy was suddenly blushing. She shrugged and tightened the apron around her back.
"Well, no problem. You guys get your table, I'll be there with your order in a second."
She turned at the coffee machine as the two customers headed towards a small table not too far away. The short boy waved at a pretty woman with white hair busy reading on a couch nearby, and she replied with a gentle squeeze of her lids and a smile.
Mariko bonked the filter on the sink to get ready of the old coffee powder and filled it to the brim with some fresh one. She stuck it in position and turned the machine on, putting a mug under the dispenser. She turned to pick a jar and a bottle of syrup from the shelf, then grabbed the jug with the milk and steamed it. She chocked a curse when the foam overpoured on her hand, burning it.
Once the machine finished dripping the last bit of cofee in the mug, she added the milk, then two -- no, three, better, four, those were loyal customers! -- spoonfuls of chocolate powder, and a couple of pumps of caramel syrup. She filled another cup with hot water, put a teabag next to it, and arranged both on a tray before heading to the table where the two boys were sitting.
"There you go," she grinned, "the double chocolate mocha... And the tea," she concluded, twisting her nose in a disapproving frown as she put the last cup down.
"Efficient and quick," the short boy smiled.
Yet, Mariko wasn't sure if she had imagined his thin eyes darting at the mocha, where the foam of the milk had already disappeared, revealing a not so appetising greyish liquid underneath. Damn it, she always forgot to slam the jug on the counter to get rid of the air bubbles. When she realised even the tall boy was staring at it with a hesitant look, her cheeks warmed up for the embarrassment.
"Well, enjoy," she was quick to say, turning on her heels and heading back behind the counter.
The owner of the cafe, a tall, burly bald man with thin moustaches, had just appeared from the back of the shop; Mariko saw him grinning and nodding at the white-haired woman before noticing the two boys she had just served.
"Huh," he muttered. "Those two again?"
"Yep." Mariko grabbed a cloth and started wiping the machine before he could notice the milk she had spilled.
The owner let out a thoughtful murmur, then grinned. "I'm not sure the tall one is coming here for the coffee, though."
Mariko halted; she turned at the owner with a quirked brow. "What do you mean?"
"Well," the owner chuckled, "maybe you should check the jars you take before preparing your 'Mariko special', kid."
He patted her shoulder and left to take the white-haired woman's order. Mariko followed him with her look, confused, then lowered her eyes on the counter. That was when she realised what he meant: the powder she had just used wasn't chocolate. It was pepper.
And yet, she realised with a mortified groan as she looked back up, the tall boy was sipping on it, nose runny and reddened eyes filled with tears. In front of him, his friend was slapping his thigh, doing his best not to choke on his tea from the laughters.
