Applying a magnetic field to rod-like viruses induces them to form disks of tunable shape and size
Seeking to mimic self-assembly processes that occur naturally, RIKEN researchers have demonstrated that the self-assembly of rod-shaped viruses can be controlled by applying a magnetic field. This could help in the development of artificial self-assembly processes that are more controllable than existing ones. The study is published in Nature Communications. When constructing a house, a bricklayer has to take each brick and cement it in place. But in many biological processes, the "bricks" arrange themselves into structures spontaneously. Due to their high efficiency and precision, such self-assembly processes are increasingly being used in areas such as nanotechnology and materials science.

A new technique that produces 3D models of individual crystals has opened a window for scientists to see the subtle deviations that emerge in their otherwise perfect patterns. Researchers from New York University (NYU) went back to the drawing board on how to look deep inside solids made of repeating units, and determine how they grow. With a short wavelength roughly the same size as many of the repeating units that make up crystals, X-rays have long allowed scientists to infer how a crystal's components fit together by measuring the angle at which the rays are diffracted.

Thought: Do you think some people in the Pokemon world grind up evolution stones and add them to their food/drink ala colloidal silver IRL?
Further Thought: Do you think over time it ends up physically altering them ala the way colloidal silver use over time turns people blue?

Holy fucking hell do not do this!!
There’s an actual advert on tumblr:

Colloidal gold will do the same thing that colloidal silver will do. It will turn your skin blue, and cause organ inflammation toxicity in your liver and kidneys and skin rashes.
Do not start taking heavy metals as a diet supplement. This is wrong and bad and holy fuck somebody should get fired for allowing this advert.

Crystals -- from sugar and table salt to snowflakes and diamonds -- don't always grow in a straightforward way. New York University researchers have captured this journey from amorphous blob to orderly structures in a new study published in Nature Communications. In exploring how crystals form, the researchers also came across an unusual, rod-shaped crystal that hadn't been identified before, naming it "Zangenite" for the NYU graduate student who discovered it. Order from chaos Crystals are solid materials made up of particles that arrange themselves in repeating patterns. This process of self-assembly -- "orchestrating order from chaos," as the researchers describe it -- was once thought to follow a predictable, classic pattern of growth. But instead of always forming building block by building block, scientists are learning that crystals can grow through more complex pathways.
