I was talking about this on a call the other day but one of my favorite things about Sea of Thieves is that the characters are allowed to be ugly and so wildly diverse. Even the skeletons are diverse and have compelling and fun designs.

Note that when I say ugly I don’t mean that as a bad thing - I’m a firm believer that ugly doesn’t have to be a bad word, just the same as fat doesn’t have to be. Nobody’s perfect and that’s beautiful etc etc, when I say ugly I mean “not conventionally attractive” and it’s something I wholeheartedly appreciate

Like. Player pirates are randomly generated, which can be frustrating but at the end of the day it’s refreshing to not be able to sit and put together the perfect pirate. There will always be little scars or nicks or features you didn’t choose to place there, but they’re your pirates��� features. Just a couple days ago I realized my pirate has a snake bite on her cheek, and I LOVE that it’s there, though I never would have considered it for her had I been given the option to build her from scratch.

The NPCs, too, are diverse, and allowed to be flawed, and ugly. With their crooked or missing teeth and imperfect proportions and scars and asymmetrical faces - Rare could have very easily chosen to make every last NPC a perfectly pretty face fit for a magazine, and they chose not to. It makes the characters feel a little more real, more like they’re people - I can’t tell you how often I sit and examine the models of NPCs to look at every little detail and just appreciate how imperfect they are.

And like previously stated - and perhaps the thing I appreciate the most - even the skeleton characters are widely varied. Rathbone moves with a hunched posture that hides the fact his frame is fairly small, Grimm is tall and wide in that way that Sea of Thieves builds their fat characters, one of Chi’s horns is growing from her eye socket and she’s lankier than Ruth’s sturdy frame, Horatio has arms that are just a little too long, so on and so forth.

Just… Sure, I don’t by any means love Rare as a company, but the character design we see in Sea of Thieves is some of the best I’ve ever seen. I have a lot of love for this pirate game and the amount of love the design team put into every single character they offer us

as pleased as i am that we're getting a new support hero, i can't help but be disappointed that she looks like d.va's and tracers's models just got mashed together (i literally thought it was just a new skin for either of them for a sec). i kinda want to know what the lore behind her is, but... at the same time i lost interest in new characters lore after bap :( let us know if she's at least fun to play when you get a chance to test her out!

i havent been interested in OW lore since like. idk maybe ramattra: at this point i am just here to see if the chara plays nice and if they look nice while liking the old ones LOL juno looks real fun to play with the space theme, so i'm optimistic she'll be a joy :^)

regarding juno about her appearance, i don't think she looks too much like a mash up of dva/tracer like some of the gal heroes usually do (kiriko genuinely does just make me think of tracer sometimes, for instance)..

...but i do like her 'preview' model before. at the very least, her eyes made her stand out with how sharp the lashes were coupled with her smaller face

in the model we have now, they like. nerfed her lashes LOL??? i could be coping but her old eyes looked more 'rectangular' than the rounded shape we have now also. if they kept the eyes from before, i think that would've helped make her stand out, at the very least the lashes. they have a particular style to them that just isn't translated into the in-game model now

Right so next part will be delayed since my laptop has decided to do THIS…

I mainly use it for proofreading and listening to music while I’m writing so this will obviously slow that process down, but I also use it a lot for school work as it’s easier on there rather than on my phone but NOW I’ll have to use my phone for school work until I get it fixed (hopefully?? We definitely cannot afford a new laptop rn this one already cost my mum almost £500)

So unfortunately I’ll have to move EVERYTHING over to my phone, which will certainly be a struggle with how small the screen is compared to my laptop and how much homework I actually need my laptop to be able to do💔💔 there will, again, be a slight delay in part 2 because of this

Horse Stuff

I said the other day you might not guess I like horses at first glance, but I do have some horsey decor, other than model horses. Here's some of it.

A horse-themed compact I picked up at an antique store 10+ years ago. Was not expensive. I really love this item, though I don't know anything about it. The maker is Henriette, and I've seen more of their compacts online, though never this one. Era? Hard to say? Just going off its aesthetic, I feel like it could be as early as the 40s, maybe, or maybe from the 70s or 80s. It came with its original powder, which I would guess adds to its collectability. But I don't know what's in that stuff, it could be lead or powdered mummy or space dust, so I cleaned it out. It's too nice for everyday use, but it works well as a decorative object on its own.

Another antique store find, a small china foal, unmarked. My mom got this for me when I was little, just on a whim, so I'm sure it wasn't expensive either. I think this thing is delightful with its string-cheese-like conformation and semicircle tail and concerningly red mouth. The black marks on the forelegs are the slightest suggestion of the top rim of its hooves. It has fallen off my shelf more than once and never broken. I would guess it dates from the 50s or so.

Oh, now for Bluebell -- Bluebell being the name child me gave her. I got her at a crafts fair and she's a handmade one of a kind (I assume) unicorn. As a kid, I was a little weirded out by her, but I've grown fond of her in adulthood. She has a deeply textured mane and tail, a cone-like horn, a pendant, impressively detailed hooves, and no eyes, but a left eye socket. Also a crap-eating smile. On the right, you can see the artist's signature along her left flank -- "JoJo". Very nice work, JoJo, I'm glad my folks swung by your fair.

And finally my unlicensed The Last Unicorn tissue box. I got this probably within the last ten years at a store that sells local artwork, so it's handmade (decoupage). The art (I assume) is taken from the official graphic novel adaptation and it's eye-meltingly lovely, the colors, the sparkles, the unicorn's big anime eyes. It's held up very well, the colors are still bright, every angle looks beautiful, and it's my constant companion during the winter months.
