- parasite shrubs and the sea of trees. they were both explained well enough but the fact that all of youkai society is contained within the bubble of the princess's power and everything outside of it is a lawless death sentence is SO COOL. conceptually. like how many square miles can she cover? what does the youkai population number even look like? the three powers all have "bases" in different locations but what about the regular citizens? are there multiple towns? cities? how would living near the border of the sea of trees be handled? is the sea of trees ever used as a means of capital punishment? do they have any kind of guard or patrol ? im not gonna edit it sorry but this is bled into my next point, which was

- sakae and nara

- sakae and aoi

- sakae in general. we know bros family got squadwiped by youkai, he killed them indiscriminately with his influence as revenge up until he met aoi who (SOMEHOW we dont fucking KNOW because we dont know shit about aoi EITHER) changed his heart enough to have him secretly working for the mononokean, at some point he started a family, and he died trying to save aoi. and thats it. how did he fall in love with nara?? why was his hair gold the first time they met and then black after that even though he could still see youkai?? how did he meet aoi?? what was his personality like beyond traumatized and exhausted??? we will never fucking know :D

- aoi in general. all we know about them is they were the previous master of the mononokean, if you bully haruitsuki they will kill you <3, they saved him from youkai as a itty bitty kid and probably kidnapped (????) him to the underworld for child employment training, theyre the coolest strongest cat ever and everybody thought they were dead, and theyre probably gonna be the next underworld princess (#nongendered). what does their human form look like? whats their personality like beyond "loves abeno"? why did they become the master of the mononokean? how did they and sakae become friends/partners? what made them risk everything by letting sakae work for the mononokean in secret rather than just killing the walking youkai murder machine? WE WILL NEVER. FUCKING. KNOW. :D

- that one youkai who was studying their school to implement some kind of standardized education in the youkai world. we shoulda checked back in on them fr

So true I’m ngl though I think my fav is usually a sort of middle ground…angst and then fluff or comfort because sometimes I’ll lose my mind if it just ends on a sad note and my thoughts will spiral HAHA but also I LOVE the fluff in fwtkac….so good…sometimes I need something without heart wrenching drama LOL white butterfly I feel like was a perfect mix….i feel like the angst was so developed in that way because it explores the emotions more…? I don’t think I’m articulating this perfectly but sometimes I feel the angst trope will ONLY jump to just character death (not that it’s bad! I love a good ultra angsty piece from time to time) but like theres different ways to developed and make something heartbreaking without killing someone off (and in a way being able to do that just shows the skills of a writer!!) but the way you wrote wb…like building up the relationship and then cruelly ripping them apart right as y/n sorts out her feelings…..too good…

The scene in the car where he passes y/n the aux in fwtdac made me curious abt his music taste to see if maybe it is atrocious and the Bible says his favorite song is “Fly” by Grapevine?? I’m listening to it now and um..well…I mean it’s not my style per se but it could be worse?? At least it’s not like some jojo siwa song I guess but uh…I’ll let you listen to it first. I mean. It’s very Karasu, I think. I won’t hate on it! I’ll just say it’s not going into my playlist LOL

Also seeing fanart Lowk makes me think…this is just a general random thought but I feel like Karasu owning a pet bird (or birds) would be so funny LOL I know his motif is a crow and some people in Japan have crows as pets?? But imagine him having like a goofy little parrot that talks and sings (I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen on tiktok or anywhere but some parrots love singing “bacon pancakes” LOL or goofy little songs and they’re SOO CUTE)!! I’m a little bit of a bird nerd and I feel like he’d train like one of the really smart birds like an African Grey or an Ringneck to do fancy tricks and talk and all that…or he could have a funky like Quaker parrot that likes to sing and dance or one of those larger macaws that leave nut shells everywhere LMAO Like you imagine him having maybe some really scary or sharp looking pet based off his first impression like a Doberman or German shepherd maybe but instead he pulls out a goofy looking bird that’s his pride and joy

yesss i think it’s a symptom of western society’s emphasis on the nuclear family!! i think that’s also why a lot of friendships in animanga tend to be seemingly romantic-coded — as someone who is the daughter of immigrants from india, i know that familial relationships and friendships are thought of as much more important over there and people are more openly affectionate with their friends!! my brother and i always joke that our dad and his bff are actually a couple just because of how close they are but it’s really because they’re from a culture where it’s normal to be like that w your friends which i’ve always found interesting but also super healthy (not that those societies don’t have their problems hehe just smth i’ve noticed)

HELP because first selection barou looked so weird like his proportions were so interesting in a negative way?? and honestly in the first match when he was w naruhaya…joining isagi made him glow up physically as well as mentally 😫 him in bm vs ubers holy shit 😳 sooooo fine

oh i agree i think angst is harder to write than anything else!! it’s very hard to strike a balance between actual sadness/emotional impact and just gratuitous violence where you’re killing everyone off for no reason. even in my saddest stories i sprinkle in funny/light moments because they actually make the angst hit harder than if it’s straight depression all of the way through.

the high quality honey bruh karasu was just pulling stuff out of his ass he is so evil i love him 😔 to be honest i think he and otoya truly are the best representation of teenage boys like some of these soccer dudes are way too serious but tabieita keep it real 😭 like yes they love soccer and they’re really good at it but out of all of the characters they feel like the only ones who would not gaf if they got kicked out of bllk because they have other interests and things to do. like barou or bachira without soccer for example would probably crash out and live miserable lives but i think karasu and otoya would be like “okay 👍” and move on which i love abt them!!

FWTKAC BESTIE IS SO FUNNY to me i love writing her which is why she’s slowly becoming more and more prominent w each part 😭 she’s also the perfect vehicle for otoya slander because as sassy as y/n is she’s going to be too busy hanging out w karasu during the bllk break to waste her energy beefing w his new bestie

THANK YOUUU i’ve dabbled in a lot of types of riding but i’ve settled on dressage for the past few years because jumping is too stressful for me. i had my own horse for a while!! he was an off-track thoroughbred so he used to be a racehorse and i retrained him to jump and do dressage and whatnot. i did have to sell him unfortunately because of school 😕 atm i ride other people’s horses so it’s basically whatever i can get a hold of!! it’s definitely so much fun but a lot of work for sure. the worst is when it’s summer and blazing hot but you’re in full pants, knee high boots, and gloves because that’s just what you wear when riding 😪

the thing is, i find it so frustrating because the conceptual blueprint of natalie's death makes perfect sense to me, but i thought the execution was really poor, in large part due to the awful pacing of this season. teen natalie would've died saving javi way back when, but misty stopped her. adult natalie dies saving lisa because this time she can, she cares for lisa, whom she sees as a kindred spirit, and poor lisa just stumbled into this situation she couldn't possibly understand. there is inherent tragedy in misty (as bizarre and off-putting as she is) killing natalie-- whom she sees as her best friend --while trying to protect her. IT'S A GREAT SETUP.

but the execution is so OFF to me, because like...misty and natalie barely interact the whole season. as endearing as it was watching nat bond with lisa, in-universe she's only known her for like a week! and that, right there-- like all the events in the adult timeline are taking place within days, DAYS, and you're telling me they escalated to reviving the card/hunting ritual that fucking fast!?!?

it's so messy to me. i don't think that storyline was paced properly or given the time to develop the way it should have even though i agree with the end result because yeah, no, you're right, that's just where natalie's arc was headed...i just think it could've been done so much better. like, re-watching the season one finale with jackie's death, it hits so much harder but it's also pulled off so seamlessly. even the...like the camera action going on with natalie's death in s2 was strange, it was looking like some cw nancy drew nonsense. this is showtime, wtf am i paying this for this fancy subscription for when ur giving me cw grade cinematography???

and yes, natalie's dying vision was also so...i mean...what was that??? why the different plane?!? can't believe i'm saying this bc the less i see of his face the happier i am, but where was fucking travis??? i can't stand him, but he was so important to her, he should've been there!!! i do know her vision was originally different (and much more disturbing, the other passengers nat sees were ig like laughing and more or less mocking her as she died) but that version doesn't even sound more sensible, just different. jackie's death vision on the other hand was like, i mean, as heartbreaking as it was, imo it was perfect. we the audience realize jackie's dead the same moment jackie realizes she's dead. the music is simultaneously eerie and sad. it's creepy the way everybody is just surrounding and staring at her, but it's also tragic because we're seeing how human jackie is as it's simultaneously what she craves; to be seen, and loved, and warm.

okay i went on a loooong rant and i apologize for that. but yeah, no, i was not feeling the second half of this season and i think nat's death conceptually was the right conclusion for her character, but the way it was done was so wonky it left me upset for almost none of the reasons it was *supposed* to be upsetting.

also thank you!!!! i’m out here for an engineering internship i actually gave my final presentation to senior leadership yesterday! plant manager + every department head were there to hear the interns present abt their projects and oh my fucking god i thought questions and comments were just a formality THEY WERE NOT. my thing was a software data organizational structure to optimize pulling up relevant equipment data (eg boiler pressure) bc previously you needed a very specific code to find Anything now you can look up vague phrases and find what you want. this system is my baby. i have categorized over 1600 pieces of data and associated them to the correct equipment and system.

ANYWAYS at one point a guy was like okay so a) how is this not already implemented everywhere and b) how do we turn this into a [company] global engineering standard. i am in Shock. also i think they hired me part time over the school year to do the same kind of work i’m doing right now! did not think i would end up basically a software consultant. also i am 20 why the fuck am i getting responsibility.

how has your summer been??? i feel like i have talked in Detail about mine lmao how have the summer classes been? i’m taking a physics one online rn it’s annoying af. did you take that sf trip??? do you know what you want to do for work? also you’re in a good city for it! sd is one of the two big biochem biotech hubs aside from boston! tbh i’m probably going to end up coming back there in the end bc i’m biochem engineering

also cause the company i’m interning with takes 150 interns Total bc they said they put effort into us So they can hire us, not so they can train us to work for other people so. basically i almost certainly have a guaranteed next year internship and hopefully basically guaranteed full time job when i grad!! number one engineering internship in the country <3

my summer has been good!! my uni has two rounds of summer classes, so for my first round I finished the classes and got an A in one and a B in the other so we win these :) now i'm on my second round and I had to read a super dense research paper today about synthesizing malaria drugs and one of the questions was like "use what you learned in biochemistry and molecular biology to explain the nomenclature of these mutation names" and I took both of those classes a full year ago so I just fucking blue screened

the non school parts of my summer have been alright! mostly I just hung out with my best friend whenever I was down in SD for classes, and she also drove up to LA a few times. we were trying to spend as much time as possible together because she got a job with the NIH in DC so she's moving there for 2 years. she left about a week ago and i miss her sm already, but I'm really glad we got to spend a lot of time together before she moved. she's shown me so many great bars in SD (including the one I recommended to you!), definitely gonna use that knowledge for the future

also no we did not take the sf trip it just didn't work out :(

no I don't know what I want to do for work aaaa I wanna do something writing related but idk I might just get a gig as a lab tech for a bit since I have all the qualifications for it thanks to my ~bio degree~ and my lab experience. just so i have something to do while i figure out how to break into the writing industry. (I need to figure something out though my mom desperately wants me to work for her and while the fashion industry is cool I really do not wanna work for my mother again. I did it for one summer already and that was enough) (the work itself is fine my mom is just more of a hardass on me compared to a normal employee bc I'm her kid lol)

omg biochem engineering!! another friend of mine who was also biochem engineering is moving to boston bc she got accepted to a PhD program over there right out of undergrad. I was so impressed

Season 1: The Rankings

WOW it’s been ages since I’ve posted here. But before moving on to s2, I wanted to talk about my TOP TEN FAVE EPISODES.

Something that surprised me about spn now i’ve finally watched some of it is how variable the episodes are in terms of quality. They’re not afraid to experiment either, and that flexibility is probably one reason this show lasted so long. Some things worked for me, some things didn’t. ANYWAY these are my opinions etc. just from a first time watcher!! 1.) Episode 6: SKIN. This episode, man. Where to even begin: I could be here all night. Suffice to say that the sequence where the shapeshifter sheds his Dean skin to “Hey Man Nice Shot” is just. Chef’s kiss. For the first time, the true depth of Dean’s self loathing truly came to the fore. How socially outcast he knows himself to be, all that hidden shame, that resentment he harbours towards Sam for having (potentially) a way out of the hunter life, coupled with his desperation not to lose him to the “normal world”: somewhere that Dean knows he can’t follow him. After so much posturing and bravado, that inner parodox was SO interesting to witness - he SHOOTS HIMSELF at the end -- and, for me, really steered the character into more *~ thematically complex territory ~* All the songs were good tbh. In-a-Gadda-da-Vida? Yes. 11/10

2.) Episode 11: SCARECROW. There was just so much going on in this episode, but the thing I liked most was the setting. It looked so good!! Autumnal and pastoral. After a couple of (in my opinion) not very good-looking episodes, it was a real breath of fresh air. I also loved Sam in this episode: he looked so small standing by the side of that road. I fully understood the argument, but I also loved how dean just... called him intermittently to update him on the case?This episode really drove home to me how alone they are, how they really have no-one but each other. It also really highlighted how far Sam has drifted from episode 1: he’s on the fringes now, too. All too quickly backsliding into the role of rootless grifter, an identiy he’d tried so hard to claw his way out of. Also, there’s a tome. 10/10

3.) Episode 12: FAITH. This. Episode. Slaps. To be honest, this is probably technically the masterpiece of the season in terms of plot, visuals, antagonist, music etc. but w/e it’s my list. Right off the bat Dean is dying and he’s like it’s fine Sammy, I’m not even mad about it, which is fucked up but then what is more fucked up is that his dad doesn’t even come when Sam leaves him a message? Dean seems to view dying as like. A thing grownups just have to do sometimes. Like jury duty. It’s extremely,extremely sad. Anyway I love the drama of Sam smashing apart the altar, I love the big tent, I love the “don’t fear the reaper” montage. It’s all, quite simply, a *~cut above~* 10/10

4.) Episode 7: HOOK MAN. I don’t know if I was meant to love this episode so much?? I just really, really liked it. I loved the central mystery, and I thought Sam in particular really shone when it came to dealing with the townsfolk and the afflicted girl. It was one of the most thematically coherent episodes when it came to tying the monster to sublimated fear, in this instance, sex and sexuality! Damn do Americans have a weird relationship with sex. And not just with women; this episode really shone a spotlight on Sam’s sexuality wrt his guilt over Jess, his desire for normality, his coltish nervousness in Lori’s presence. There was SO. MUCH. Bonus points for ugly mid-2000s fashions. 10/10

5.) Episode 3: DEAD IN THE WATER. This was the first episode which really made me sit up and go, oh, okay. I can see why people lose their minds over this show. When it’s good, Supernatural just. Shoots a volt of pure catharsis straight into your chest. This was also the first time I really sat up and took note of Jensen Ackles’ acting chops. There’s just so much going on with him every time he’s onscreen, and each little paradoxical turn he gives to Dean’s character is a joy to witness. It was a visually beautiful episode, with a strong supporting cast. The moment I saw her in her silky lavender nightgown, twisting up her unrealistically perfect chingoin, I wished to marry Amy Acker’s character. I know she doesn’t come back to spn but she should’ve!! She should’ve!! 10/10

6.) Episode 5: BLOODY MARY. I’ve heard tell of this episode being a bit of a fandom classic, and I support it. The last few minutes at the end? When Sam sees Jess at the side of the road in that slow panning shot, to the Rolling Stones song Laugh I Nearly Died? It was just... I think it changed me as a person, honestly. This show. It’s lower down on the list for me because how how freaking dark the lighting was at the end, but that might have just been the poor quality stream I found. But yeah, I really liked the plucky teen girl who helped them; I was pleasantly surprised to see a glamourous queen bee-type portrayed as smart and competent, and remain alive by the end. Gold star for you, spn. I know it’s all downhill from here. 9/10

7.) Episode 15. THE BENDERS. First off, I have to give it points for the production design on that house. My brother was of the opinon it would’ve made a good video game enviroment (according to him a lot of spn is akin to a video game which... yeah). This episode also made me really acutely feel for Dean. Could it be because I’m an older sister and this was a literal nightmare scenario? Perhaps. But again what really came to the fore was the single-mindedness with which Dean acted. Sam being dead was literally not an option for him. On a lesser show that might have been left as a given, but the time was really taken to give an almost sinister intensity to Dean’s thoughts and behavior. Some really pretty car shots too. 9/10

8.) Episode 17: HELL HOUSE. What can I say about this? It’s just fun. I love the two conspiracy guys, I love the sibling prank war, I love the concept of a monster created by shared belief. The set design was cool, as was the montage at the beginning where they’re interviewing all the witnesses. It’s a briskly paced and lighthearted episode, which was a breath of fresh air and welcome break after last episode left the Winchester boys abandoned by their father. Yet. Again. Ugh. Throw the whole dad away. 9/10

9.) Episode 19: PROVENANCE. Haunted painting! Haunted! Painting!! This is a simple lil episode but it receives points for Sam and Dean’s best and least convincing disguises thus far -- art dealers -- and a fun, sweet love interest for Sam. He’s so bashful! I thought she was smartly written and I especially liked that she took a more active role and actually helped them solve the case than other side characters we’ve seen so far. I also liked when they were standing over the grave and she was like wow, your lives are really fucked up... it’s true wtf these poor guys?? Anyway 8/10

10.) Episode 14: NIGHTMARE. This spot was a real toss-up between this and SOMETHING WICKED, but NIGHTMARE just edged it out because of the strong supporting character Max, as well as the sheer conceptual power of psychic Sam. Something about the way Dean treats his brothers latent psychic powers as... kind of a concern, but ultimately about on a par with him developing, like, a shellfish allergy, is hilarious to me. They have so many problems, it’s just low priority! Sorry Sammy. But what really clinched this episode for me was the three second-ish sequence where Sam shoves the dresser free with his mind, Dean gets shot in his vision, and Sam bursts into the room. Brilliance. Someone call the x-men. My heart was in my mouth. BIG minus points however for the extensive heart-to-hearts. It was just too much for me. It went on for so long. 7/10

This certainly is a show. I see that now. Anyway. Onto season 2!

What are your thoughts on what happend to Harmonia? Since I hc her as sweet and calm, maybe it was cruel, maybe Hephaestus didn't plan for things to go bad to the point she ended up "dead" (snakefied) in the Underworld.

The weird thing with Harmonia is that she’s both conceptualized as a goddess, but at the same time her divinity seems to have been forgotten at least by the point all versions come to the end. Now, you don’t have to actually die as a deity to go and be stuck in the Underworld (they could’ve been freed of the snake transformation and Harmonia simply wants to stay with her husband and at this point that means the Elysian Fields/Blessed Isles), and, on top of that we already know two deities do not necessarily give birth to a deity in turn, so maybe Harmonia was only ever a nymph at most. That is undoubtedly the path of least resistance, but I confess I always thought of her as an actual (if lesser) goddess, which then gives you “she went with her now-dead husband to where she could still be with him, while a goddess still” or at least one translation that gives us that they go live with gods - I go with that one.

Now, that comes from the end of a prophecy/proclamation of Dionysos from the Bacchae, and I literally hate everything here, but I will take that one tiny snatch of information and use it.

Honestly the whole thing is so shitty because wtf has Kadmos done to deserve this? He literally paid off his killing the dragon (and the Spartoi are the descendants, of a sorts, of that dragon, so that’s another thing that makes up for it), and I just cannot see Ares being so angry he then dooms his daughter to that sort of thing. On top of that why would you give your daughter to a man you still hate? I figure he came to like Kadmos during the great year (nine) that he served Ares. Kadmos is by all accounts(?) not actually a part of denying who the father of Dionysos is, if that prophecy is supposed to be another one of Dionysos’ punishments (hi I hate it here I hate everything and I hate him. Like yeah, I’m sure your mother will be super happy you fucked up her parents and other family after you fetch her from the Underworld, Dionysos), and while you can go with that it’s the necklace (though only one source has Hephaistos make it with intent to cause harm to the child born of Ares and Aphrodite from the adultery), I’m pretty sure the necklace is out of the house by that point.

So, like. I don’t know. I hate basically any variation of this and the only thing that makes it a little better is imagining Ares undoing the transformation later and getting his daughter and her husband up to Olympos. I’d imagine at the latest after the Trojan war, to fit in with the gods withdrawing a little and whatnot.

But yeah, I figure Harmonia is very quiet and introverted (to both parents’ consternation), but despite this very good at conflict resolution. Very sweet and affectionate - but not actually a pacifist of any sort and she is actually good with a sword and bow (guess why).

*re upload* I uploaded this last night but then deleted it cause I got paranoid for some reason? So now I'm posting it again because, if I can't post this here wtf am I gonna do with it? But yeah here's a self indulgent idea that I have no intents on turning into a fic, I just daydream about it a lot!

(cw: grooming but not of a minor, manipulation mention, drugs mention, idk Noel's just a bad person in this one). Also it's not really full on gallaghercest, but it's gallaghercest adjacent I suppose

but basically, it's modern times (minus the pandemic) and Noel is fucking jaded as fuck at this point. Nothing in his life is particularly wrong, his marriage is going well, his career is going well, he's not creatively bankrupt yet, and the nuisance that is his brother has been out of his life for 11 odd years. But here's the thing, the first- what 40 years of his life were unstable, chaotic, excessive, full of conflict, and his problem is that he doesn't know how to settle into stability.

Anyway he signs this young band to the Big Brother label, and takes them out on tour with the High Flying Birds. He's convinced that to bring meaning back into his life he's gotta do some full-circle shit, do for someone else what Johnny and Clint did for him in his youth and there's just summat about this band that reminds him of early oasis. It's got nothing to do with the negging thought in the back of his head screaming "hey don't that lead singer remind you of-"

'Cause see, when noel was a kid he'd go on and on about how he wished Liam were born as his sister, and as a young man he'd often wondered, if Liam was a girl, would he had made more of an effort to protect her? Would he have kept her away from drugs, would he have beat up boys at school that hit on her, would he still fuck her into hotel matresses like a whore, would he still hold her face down into the pillows when she gets too loud? He thinks of her when he's too sober to shamelessly wank to memories of Liam, but too horny to make up an elaborate scenario in his head. He subs her into his memories of him, forever young, forever beautiful, forever unmarred but years of touring, drinking and fighting.

But now here she is now, lead singer of some garage rock band from London, 20, singing like a nightingale, the spitting fucking image, staring Noel in the face, looking at him with hero worship everytime he so much as walks by. Liam used to look at him like that, Liam's eyes used to scan every room for him, Liam's eyes used to find his on stage, Liam's eyes used to go wide when he'd hear Sally Cinnamon reverberate from Noel's guitar, and squeeze shut when Noel shoved his cock in him. Her eyes are gentler though, trusting, so young and naive to how bad the world can get- how bad noel can get. Sara always said being around Liam turned him into the worst version of himself, but no. Sara hasn't seen this side of him, the side that with every passing day sees this girl as less "herself" and more of something he needs to posses.

Throughout the duration of the tour, he starts an affair with this girl, slowly grooming her into being this ideal version of Liam that he had in his head. I think there would be a lot of cutting back and forth between shit he did with/to Liam that he's recreating with her. Conceptually i guess It's like a dark, psychological parody of those self indulgent Wattpad-style stories? Cause I feel like noel, whether he knows it or not, wants to ruin her in the same way he made a mess of Liam, with drugs, with sex, with physical abuse, mental abuse.

By the end of the tour Noel's on cloud fuckin 9, he realized that neglecting that part of himself is what made him so jaded. He needs to play god to feel fulfilled, he needs to build something up, destroy it, nurse its wounds then snap it's neck, in a vicious cycle. It's just his nature.

There's also running thread in my head about like, her being adamant on not doing coke because she knows she has an addictive personality, and he spends a lot of time trying to convince her to do it. He sees convincing her to do coke as kind of like, an Indictator of success or something

But yeah! That's what I've been daydreaming lately

Aight y'all.

I keep seeing these Snape hate posts, and it's driving me nuts. I think a lot of people are just jumping on the bandwagon because of the disgusting things JK's been saying lately, and while I agree that she's being terrible, it doesn't have anything to do with Snape and I don't think that warrants condensing this man's entire complex, conflicting background into "guy got friend-zoned and didn't leave her alone."

So here's why Snape is not the horrible character y'all been making him out to be lately:

Number one. Lily. One of the favorite reasons for why Snape is terrible is that he's a 'creepy stalker' and wouldn't leave Lily alone.

Let's take a look at the facts.

Lily and Snape met when they were, like, eight. They were the only people who understood each other, and Snape was the one person Lily could go to when Petunia was being a royal biatch. They were BEST FRIENDS.

Then they go to Hogwarts, and they're sorted into different houses. Not just different, OPPOSITE. SLYTHERIN AND GRYFFINDOR. And you know what happened? NOTHING. LITERALLY. NOTHING. THEY STAYED FRIENDS. Yes, it was a bit of a strain, especially once Lily and James became friends, but in reality the cause of their falling out had nothing to do with her being a Gryffindor. And before she became friends with James, let's remember: she HATED him. VEHEMENTLY. And Snape agreed, especially considering he was FREAKING BULLIED BY HIM. James was a good person at heart, and he did a lot of good things, but let's please not forget that he made mistakes, too. It doesn't discount the good things about him, it makes him human, and let's please remember that THAT'S KINDA THE WHOLE POINT OF THE SERIES. So how things stand: Snape and Lily are inter-house friends, James is an ass. (Also, part of the reason Snape hated James initially was that he liked Lily, and so did Snape. The difference, of course, was that James was a complete ass to everyone INCLUDING Lily, and Snape was her best friend.) Then Snape starts falling in with the wrong crowd. And his friendship with Lily becomes a liability, because she's both a Gryffindor and, far more importantly, Muggleborn.

Now. I'm NOT saying that everything Snape did was okay. A lot of it was disgusting and despicable and generally horrible. But again. He's HUMAN. He's kinda the biggest grey area on earth, and that makes him HUMAN.

So, one day, when James is, as usual, being a complete ass, Lily stands up for Snape. And he's feeling scared, and embarrassed, and weak, and all the other things VICTIMS OF BULLYING tend to feel, and the girl he likes just stood up for him. Which had to hurt, because Snape wants her to see him as a protector, because he likes her, but she just saved HIM. Add this to all the conflicting emotions he must be having about the future Death Eaters he's hanging out with, and his desire to both have and protect Lily, and he's basically a ticking time bomb. And he explodes. And calls Lily a mudblood.

Major wtf is wrong w u moment.

But that's the point. He SCREWS UP. Because he's HUMAN.

At this point, Snape knows he's gone too far. He probably could've salvaged the relationship, and he probably knew that somewhere in his heart, but he was probably mostly feeling horrified and sick to his stomach and had also, lets remember, kinda convinced himself that Lily liked James and she could never be his. He didn't feel worthy of her. So he decides to distance himself from her, because he knows he's getting mixed up with the wrong people, but it's what everyone expects from him. But she doesn't belong there, and he wants to protect her (also one of the main reasons he probably got involved with these people in the first place, to try and protect her), so he tells her to stay away from him.

Now, if I remember correctly (I could be completely wrong because it's been a bit since I read the last book, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), Lily didn't actually stop. I'm pretty sure she tried to talk to him several more times after the incident. That's not the behavior a victim of stalking and abuse would exhibit, don't ya think? But even if this didn't happen, I think we've made a firm case for them being CLOSE FRIENDS. Honestly I wouldn't blame her for immediately abandoning his dumb butt after what he said to her.

So fast forward a bit. Lily marries James, and Snape joins Lord Voldemort. Then he hears the prophecy Trelawney gives, and not knowing who it pertains to, tells Voldemort. Voldemort then becomes convinced that it means Harry.

Now, Snape has not only just discovered that the love of his life is about to be killed, but that it was HIS FAULT. He told Voldemort about the prophecy. So he goes to Dumbledore and literally BEGS him to hide Lily. In return he turns traitor to the Death Eaters and risks his life over and over, all for the arbitrary promise he's been made that Lily and her family will be protected. AND HER FAMILY. HE DIDN'T PULL THE THING WHERE HE ONLY SAVES HER AND LETS THE REST OF THEM DIE HE SAVES ALL OF THEM BECAUSE HE KNOWS LILY DOESN'T LOVE HIM BUT HE. STILL. LOVES. HER. AND HE WANTS HER TO BE HAPPY AND SAFE EVEN IF IT ISN'T WITH HIM. Y'ALL THAT'S THE EXACT DEFINITION OF TRUE LOVE YOU'VE GOTTA BE KIDDING ME.

And then, after all that, Lily DIES. As does James, and while he may have been Snape's rival, I think we've established that Snape is human, and that had to hurt if only because he was the man Lily loved and the father of her child.

And after all this, after risking his life for a promise that wasn't even kept, do you know what he did?

He stayed and helped Dumbledore. He was one of the main reasons Harry was able to defeat Voldemort. Yes, in the beginning, it was probably just a convenient way to avoid Azkaban. But he did what Dumbledore instructed EVEN AFTER THE MAN WAS DEAD. He could've easily killed Dumbledore and then joined Voldemort for real, but he helped Harry instead, because he was still atoning for what happened to Lily.

And speaking of Harry, let's talk about that relationship. From even a conceptual standpoint, before they ever met, think about what this boy represents to Snape. He's Lily's son, yes, but because of that he's a constant reminder of her and everything that happened with her. He's also James' son, Snape's bully and the man who got Lily. And to top it all off, he's the REASON SHE'S DEAD. If it weren't for him and the prophecy, she'd still be alive. Now, these are not things that are okay to think about an innocent child. I'm not saying he was justified in treating Harry like shit. In fact, I loathed Snape with my entire soul for the first 6 books. I'm saying LOOK AT THE FACTS. Snape is not a normal person. He's a Death Eater, who's done and seen terrible things, and only switched to the right side because of Lily. So he's not going to think to himself, "this isn't this innocent child's fault." Hell, even if he did, he's not going to take it into account when he interacts with the kid. And on top of it all, as is said several times, Harry is INCREDIBLY like his father. He looks like him, talks like him, and has a penchant for getting into trouble. So when he clashes with Snape (and honestly I think even if they didn't have a history these two would've clashed, they're just too different), Snape takes it personally and treats Harry like shit. AND YET. First year, when Quirrel tries to kill Harry, who saves him? Snape. Third year, when Lupin transforms into a werewolf (and Snape's been making his potion all year and whether Dumbledore forced him or not, let's remember that Lupin was a Marauder and while he probably didn't take direct part in the bullying, he certainly didn't DO anything about it, so frankly it's a miracle Snape didn't poison him), his first instinct is to protect the children - and frankly I think that would've been his first instinct no matter who those kids were, because regardless of the terrible things he's done, Snape is first and foremost a teacher. Fifth year, while he didn't do anything to help the kids directly, he takes the warning Harry gives him (they've got Padfoot at the place where it's hidden) and sends the Order after the kids. I don't think it's ever directly stated that it was him, but how else could the Order know they were there? ALSO. I'M NOT GLOSSING OVER ALL THE SERIOUSLY HORRIBLE THINGS SNAPE DID FIFTH YEAR. But he DID send the Order, so let's give credit where credit's due. He also gives Harry Occlumency lessons, which he made exceedingly unpleasant but he was still trying to protect Harry. Sixth year he hurts Harry in about a billion ways, but to be fair the majority of those ways were ordered by Dumbledore (I have a separate rant on why he's not a bad character either but this essay is long enough). He also tries to protect Malfoy this year, yes on both Dumbledore and his mother's orders, but Snape does recognize that he's just a child and shouldn't have to do something like this.

Now. Seventh year. Snape does a lot of really horrible things this year. Yeah, he does them because he needs Voldemort to trust him so he can bring him down, but that doesn't excuse them. I'm not going to unpack all those things here, because this is already really long, but I'm NOT just ignoring them. Actually I think that they're pretty important to his development, and how he loses himself a bit. But let's look at the two moments that really show the good in him.

Number one. He refused to fight McGonagall. This woman has not only been his colleague for many years, she was his TEACHER. He's known her since he was 11. She's witnessed everything he's gone through, every choice he's made, good and bad, and even not knowing all the reasons and details she STILL forgave him. She treated him with respect, as a fellow teacher. She TRUSTED him, and as far as she knows, he betrayed that trust. That HAD to hurt, knowing she thought he was a bad guy. So in his final interaction with her, when she attacks him to keep him from Harry, he doesn't fight. He can't tell her he's on her side, because he still has a job to do, but he just deflects her spells. His refusal to fight her is the last good piece of him, fighting its way out.

The second time was, of course, his final moments with Harry. After everything he's done to him, after the years of abuse and killing Dumbledore in front of his eyes, Harry still feels pain when he realizes Snape is about to die. He still feels the need to talk to Snape in his final moments, to carry out his final request (to take the memories to the pensieve). This is personally one of my favorite Harry moments, because it shows just how good and kind he is, that he even feels pity for a man he hates and doesn't even know why. But let's take a look at Snape. He's literally dying, but his first reaction to seeing Harry is to give him the memories, so he can defeat Voldemort. He is, to the very end, loyal to Dumbledore. And his second thought - his last - is Lily. He asks Harry to look at him, so that he might see Lily's eyes one last time, even if they're not really hers. His last thought on this earth was of her, and if that isn't love, I don't know what the hell is.

The point of all this is, Snape is human. He isn't necessarily a good person, but he isn't necessarily and a bad one either. Even as a child, he was never as kind as Lily, but she made him kinder. The time when he lost his way the most was when she stopped being there to keep him good. He thought she was happy without him, so he didn't think he mattered, and he did some pretty horrible things. People go dark when they think they don't matter. That was the entire reason for Voldemort's thirst for power. And when he realized she was in danger, and there was something he could do, he did it. Immediately. Without hesitation. He joined the good side and risked his life for the chance that Dumbledore would protect her and her family, even knowing that she'd never know what he was doing. He didn't do it to "get the girl." He did it to save the girl, to let her be happy. And when she died anyway, he spent the next 16 years trying to bring Voldemort down, and let's be honest, he probably didn't do it because it was "the right thing." He did it because it was what Lily would've wanted. He did it to honor her memory, and to protect her son. Snape wasn't some creepy stalker who got rejected and turned bitter. He fell in love with his best friend and spent his entire life trying to protect her and keep her happy, and then trying to honor her memory. He was a man entirely motivated by love, and honestly, I don't know what's more beautiful than that.

the best moments in disco elysium

- obviously the cryptid, that made me tear up a bit at the end. like o wanted to believe in the cryptid and in lena and morell, and then it showed up. and it was beautiful and transcendent, which is not something i usually get out of video games. i wish kim had been there so we could've taken a picture.

- the thing that made me laugh the most, is when harry didn't ask rene and gaston (?) what the game they were playing was, because like, i knew it was petanque, duh. and then he picked the ball up and did a shotput. that made me laugh so hard because it was so unexpected like. wtf harry. and when i broke down the door in the bookshop i was like 'FUCK YEAH THERE's a boule!!'

- the first dream with the hanged man.

- the working class lady subtask, and fucking up the roll so kim had to take over telling her. that also got me. and when gaston's alone on the bench.

- the sad PIGS lady. i feel sad that i don't know what happened to her... we just left :( i should've turned her over to the hardy boys i guess, but i didn't trust them at that point

- the smoker on the balcony and the homosexual underground, i thought that was fun. my harry is bi, bi-the-way. also i think i could ask kim if he was gay, but i didn't want to, because it felt too intrusive. yes i am like that.

- little annette and her books. i think she and the dice maker would've gotten along. also the dice maker :) and the meta-joke of the game-makers in the dungeon.

- i wish i had gotten to the container before the Tribunal, i had levelled up my rhetoric and everything.

- i wish i could've asked the boat lady about the Pale, but i couldn't because i failed the conceptualization check, and then she left. wish i knew what was up with the 2mm hole in reality.

- the ruby thing made me sad. failed the rhetoric roll :( that was genuinely upsetting for 5 minutes.

- don't fuck with the Cuno!! and how he gets shy about the locusts!!

- getting garth the stuffed bird from the fish village!

qfg reaction: 7/10 not as bad as i thought it would be but not ... particularly good either

characters: first off, ‘jasper’ or whatever the fuck his name is, is a punk ass bitch. i’ve only known him for a few hours but if anything happened to him i would be extremely pleased. Lady of The Lake kissed him??? sounds fake as shit but mkay.

as for rhian,,,,, yeah okay rhian was a good twist villain, i thought he was hella bland as a support character. he and tedros played off each other well. (and dammit soman stop making them siblings to avoid shipping material)

i loved Nicola. That scene where she told off sophie made me happy and i usually like sophie but yes i was rooting for her. RIP chaddick and lancelot you were good conceptually. Forgot everyone else.

except hort. i fucking hated hort in this one. who would want a hort?

Also, the tlea ending for Sophie was so satisfying. i feel like soman was trying to dismantle that bc he can’t just have one character arc that makes sense. or maybe he thought she was boring bc she was happy being on her own and he can’t stand the thought of one person not being paired up. or bc sophie is a self insert. or maybe-

lots of developed arcs got tossed away to create more drama. am not a fan. 0/10 do better.

relationships: i didn’t like tedros/agatha that much and this book didn’t convince me very much. the scene after tedros and sophie ‘break up’ in tlea pushed me over the edge but yeah. not very much in this one.

the letter sophie sends to agatha where she calls herself ‘silly old me’ is exactly the content i wanted. love is stored in agatha realizing the importance of platonic relationships. their reunion was cute, if not for hort grumbling darkly about hating agatha for hugging her SISTER even though i thought they established a friendship last time.

i was getting behind the idea of them as sisters until they smiled knowingly at each other during that weak hester/anadil bonfire scene. like. wtf was that? why knowingly? because they were girls in love too, but actually not???? whomst??

tbh some of the hicola scenes were cute but i still don’t like hort. give me back comic relief hort.

ALSO: if i see anyone shipping dot and kei i will combust on the spot i know abt the rafal/dot stuff and i’m just gonna stay in my tiny corner of the fandom, why you guys gotta be like... that. (keian is ok but it has to be done right. that being said please send me your fic recs)

plot: got weird sometimes, too slow paced and too fast at times. kinda confusing but i’ve never super smart and analytical anyways so maybe it’s just me. personally the first one is my favorite because of all the twists but they just got kind of tiring to me in this one.

soman seemed eager to hop from mystery to political drama to romantic drama to magical fantasy to old fairy tale centric quests and it really lost me eventually.

i didn’t get the lion eagle snake story but i don’t think many people did anyways. all in all, it was fun at times, but i’ll never take it as seriously as the school years.

[WALKTHROUGH + REVIEW] Romance MD: Eiichi Matsunaga

As per a request from @zodiacsign1, here is my walkthrough and guide for Matsunaga’s main story! I just want to quickly apologise for how long it’s taken me to get this done haha, so much has been happening recently~

Honestly, if not for this request, I would not have read this route since the only Romance MD love interest I’m interested in now is Ekuni haha (conceptually I like Kasumi buuuuut I honestly don’t think I have it in me to sit through 30 chapters of getting to know him through the MC’s perspective lmao). Anyway, I wanted to get this out before the Matsunaga LC coupon expires (13/08/2020). The coupon gives you a 10 heart discount on any one choice. If you want to get all the CGs, then I would recommend using it on that ridiculous 18 heart scene in chapter 13. Otherwise, use it on that 22 heart (lmao) scene in chapter 28 to get the best deal. As always, please bear in mind that this guide does not take plotline into account. Some of the heart scenes that I have omitted from some guides may contain more significant narrative moments. (However, RMD requires so many LM points that there really aren’t that many scenes that you can skip if you want to get to SHE.)

Since Sen’s route, they’ve started putting in some free points that move the love meter without costing any hearts if you pick the right options. I’ve noted the options I’ve found but may have possibly missed any - please let me know if you know of any other hidden free points. Interestingly, they made a note of this new mechanism (which I believe came about because of complaints at the price of Takado and Hosho’s routes) at the beginning of Sen’s route, but didn’t bring it up at the beginning of this one - it actually surprised me when I noticed that the LM bar moved after chapter 4.

This route is a little cheaper than Takado and Hosho’s route but still seriously pricey at 168 hearts in total for all heart scenes (~£17 ~22USD). As always, I’ve calculated the cheapest way to get to SHE with options for getting all the CGs or to just spend as few hearts as possible, saving you between 19% and 27% of the total hearts needed.
