Buffalo Bills Corner the Draft Market with Maxwell Hairston
I hope this feature features more than empty style. Maxwell Hairston sounds like the lead character in a Wes Anderson football movie. Rodrigo Blankenship would be the kicker. The director’s best tales are artful with depth, which brings to mind aspirations for a successful first rounder. Looking for symmetry is one way to tell if you’re lined up correctly in the zone.
The Buffalo Bills’ initial draftee has big shoes to fill if he wants to replace Kaiir Elam. The departed player seemed to be playing with laces untied. Drafting to replace previous horrific disappointments means the standard has been set low. Marginally impressing by exceeding one’s own low expectations is franchise policy.
One player can make a difference. And it doesn’t have to be allowing touchdowns Elam-style. Hairston’s positive skill set could allow for an entirely different approach. The defense might get their dream of playing more straight up coverage, as it seems like he could play either man or the aforementioned zone. A coordinator who comes up with a third coverage to stump everyone will be rich even by NFL standards.
Three college touchdowns may not sound like that many. But it’s pretty good considering quarterbacks weren’t throwing to him. Hairston’s sense for the ball is particularly impressive considering he’s on that one side that reacts to plays instead of initiating them.
The honest fan knows the case against him, which one would expect his new employer made before hiring him. That even applies to the Bills. Being undersized won’t be a problem unless the sport he plays is American football.
It’s unsurprising that most criticisms revolve around Hairston’s struggles to tackle. That’s kind of an important part of this particular game, especially for a defender. Recovering from a shoulder injury may have affected his attempt at ending plays, so at least waiting impatiently for months to see him play comes with the upside of time to heal.
Compensating with speed is the classic secondary response. Hairston doesn’t need to bring down a receiver he’s kept from catching the ball. The one better thing than arresting a criminal is preventing a crime from occurring. The Bills aspire to police effectively.
They need recruits. The Bills were forced to stock up at cornerback because of light inventory. Asking why the defense has been so neglected in the first place is hurtful to Brandon Beane’s feelings, so please be sensitive.
Misunderstanding precedent is the key to screwing up drafts. Baseless optimists scorn doubting the pick by noting how some fans did the same upon obtaining the incumbent quarterback. But presuming those doubters were the same ones who pouted about wanting the other Josh is as daft as disregarding how this year’s selection is different player. One may as well claim that those who anticipate he’ll be some kind of a bust are correct because EJ Manuel didn’t work out.
Enthusiasm goes a along way, ideally. Congratulating those selected before him is a heartwarming Justin Guarini-style sign from someone who seemed glad for success even as it came at his own expense. Will Hairston’s happiness for others translate into bliss for his club’s supporters? We may as well believe in the possibility with even training camp a ways away. The truest test of professional ability isn’t empathy in the green room: it’s surely practice snaps against teammates.
The biggest football night that contains no football prompts fans with approximately zero knowledge of players to seek signs of a proper attitude. Bills backers are glad to have someone gregarious for which to cheer. They’re hoping his zeal is contagious with the caveat that it won’t necessarily translate to adept pass defense.
Dreaming of an appealing personality serving a player resembles how veteran leadership is nice but not nearly as valuable as stellar play. Tre White was this regime’s first draftee, which every story mentioned upon his return. The rebooted arrival can ideally guide the cornerback who’s a new Bill for the first time. Our favorite human can hopefully still compete at a level which made him extra admirable. A locker room presence is not nearly as important as a field one.
It may surprise irksome types who are allergic to negativity. But skeptics wish for a draft strategy they don’t trust to work out. The general manager is apparently allergic to adding receivers, so the next-best hope is proficient balance. The defense could take a step toward catching up with an unreal offense. Getting the ball back to the MVP is a roundabout way of aiding the team’s undisputed greatest asset.
Hairston is a one-man turnover creator who’ll turn half the field into no man’s land and a liability who’s going to get pushed around before allowing ample completions. Remember to be certain either way. The moments after the draft are time for absolute certainty paired with zero evidence. Each faction is convinced that they’re absolutely right. One certainly couldn’t be wrong. The inability of knowing needs to be said.

Okay, here's my take on the whole Max Jagerman and Brad Callahan thing, using my minimum knowledge of football.
In alternating timelines, one switches from cornerback to quarterback, and vice versa. One's offense, one's defense.
Anyway, this should settle any discourse. Don't ask me anymore questions about football.

Halil's top 10 cornerbacks of the 2024 NFL Draft:
Continuing positional draft rankings, we talked about the wide receivers on Wednesday, so now it’s time to discuss the guys who are going to cover them in the pros. Personally, I didn’t make the distinction between inside and outside corners, but I did always mention which role and scheme each player would be able to fit (best) into – whether that’s boundary, field-side corner, nickelback or if I…
