kalak: when i was in the sons of honor, i was ok w/ pretty much anyone dying if i thought it would serve me escaping odium. i made decisions that harmed others :(
therapist kaladin: don't punish yourself too harshly kalak. remember you weren't in your right mind. what's important is that you do better in the future :) <3
kalak: like one time i told this brightlord it would be totally chill if he killed everyone who witnessed some dark eyed squad leader take down a shardbearer just so the brightlord could pretend he earned the shards himself. & the guy listened to me & actually did it! can you imagine?
kaladin: ...you did. what.

one of the things that feels so clear on rereads but so many people miss the first time they read the way of kings is shallans PTSD. I think part of it is the way it gets overshadowed by the constant unending tragedy of kaladin's story, its easy to slot shallan in as the young naive rich girl and not look much deeper. Part of it also is the way shallan drastically understates her own trauma. she says that she's timid, she doesn't like confrontation, she talks about her father's temper, but she was the lucky one because it was never directed at her. There are so many things in her first few chapters alone that are textbook PTSD, the way she freezes and shuts down any thought process that gets too close to her father's death, the flashback when jasnah gets angry at her, how she dissociates when she draws. It's so obvious if you know what you're looking for, but just subtle enough, especially when it's compared to kaladin's trauma, that a lot of people miss it at first. anyway I would defend shallan davar with my life.

- chapter 51, Oathbringer
‘Well, here I fucking am again. 😭’
Like, Mr./Ms. Overseer, you have no idea how not funny AND funny this situation is. He’s back to fucking square one.
Again.
Because according to him, he somehow always ends up back at square one. Even in a fucking Desolation, here he is again. It’s almost like predestination. If it’s “journey before destination,” it’d be nice to feel like there’s some progress being made!
But here he is, about to be put on a bridge crew again.
He gave up on humanity when he saw a group of Alethi darkeyes defer to a lighteyes who was severely incompetent. Then told himself that things were better under the rule of the Voidbringers (never mind that he was still a slave), until he saw them abusing some of their own. And now they’re setting up to do the bridge crew thing.
It probably feels like there’s no escape.
No wonder he feels so fatalistic.
It sort of goes back to Sigzil’s point in chapter 46 of The Way of Kings—
“it has been my experience that no matter where you go, you will find some who abuse their power…. If you were to overthrow the lighteyes and place yourselves in power, Moash, I doubt that the world would be a very different place. The abuses would still happen. Simply to other people.”
Turns out it’s to some of the same people too.
I was really proud of him when he stuck up for Sah and his family, though.

little doodle/redraw of a piece from 3 yrs ago that got out of hand...
referenced off a dress from auguste racinet's the costume history, which is an incredible resource for, imo, renaissance to late 19th century european costume

Like.... okay.... the parallel of shallan trying to summon her shardblade but it doesn't work in shadesmar.... then adolin running like does he remember he's not in shard plate? (no) but gallant gallops to adolin with maya on his back... did anyone hear adolin call the beast? (no)
this means that adolin also tried to summon his shardblade but it did work... gallant came not because adolin called to his rishadium but because he called to maya.... and she came to him!!! she knew he was in trouble!!!! she brought him his steed!!!
and oh OH the insanity of gallant trusting maya when rishadium only trust their riders... adolin and maya's bond is such that gallant trusts that she can command him on his behalf!!!!! I am going insane
ADOLIN HAS BONDED A SPREN AND THAT SPREN IS MAYA AND SHE IS NOT DEAD

lol kaladin can never escape the names 'lordling' or 'stormblessed' it's so funny. He just wants to be normal and everyone around him thinks he's either stuck up or noble (and stuck up). Or they can just tell that he's the winds favorite boy, so there's that. He gets sold into slavery, moved hundreds of miles away, and placed in the worst positions possible, with everyone he's ever known either dead or gone (like multiple times), and the names still follow him.

OH MY FUCKING GOD DARK ONE FORGOTTEN im fuckingf sobbing what was that. why arent people talking about that. it was so good and im gonna have a headache tonight because i cried but i don't care because i heard this story. go listen to it now
and I had it in my notes! I had this idea in my notes!! (went and checked and it's not in my notes) ok but at some point I wrote down a character who uses a curse to their advantage, and then I read alcatraz and was like oh that's not what I meant but I guess it's fun, but THIS. THIS DOES IT. SO WELL. and at some other point I wrote a short story about a functionally invisible character and that was before i read the schwa was here and this is actually one of my favorite tropes but this is the best one. this is absolutely the best one. endorsing dark one forgotten as the best functionally invisible story
went on coppermind to find the actors and coppermind forgot about them tooooo chris and sophie don't even have coppermind pages wtaf why did no one listen to this
i think its rachel jacobs and sophie oda and i can't find much info about either of them but they were boht fucking amazing. dear god thank you rachel jacobs. the number of times you said the other actors were really good and then you completely blew them out of the water. you made me tear up at least twice and the other time it was sophie oda so points to all of you
the story. can't even explain waht thsi is. true crime horror mystery fantasy? and I don't even like the first half of that sentence but I don't care because the story punched me in the gut and I didn't even need to understand the worldbuilding. chris asked questions and consulted experts and ran experiments and she got my heart. skeptical about sophie but she was there the entire time. not her project, not her obsession, not her responsibility, but she stayed, and she helped. chris and sophie said they weren't a couple and I was immediately like "yeah if they weren't both women(, bitch) that would be foreshadowing" and IT WAS FUCKIGN FORESHADOWING istg. This. This is also the best romance. And I hate romance I'm arospec lmao but dear god this got me. the sheer dedication to stare at somebody for eight god damn hours straight and then the music box scene. the music box scene. I got to it and I knew it was going to happen as soon as sophie asked but it still blew my mind and broke my heart that she did. because sophie is the best person in the world.
I have not been making sanderson reread update posts, and I read rithmatist and all of reckoners, but I'd already read most of those and there's nothing notable about lux except the plot holes and they didn't hit me hard like fucking dark one forgotten did. i barely knew this existed. It came out during the year of sanderson and yet nobody includes it in the book count. (There were 8 books/stories released, cowards, not 5.) but also I feel the need to mention that I thought dark one was quite good as well, but also that it feels like only the first chapter of a story so I can't say much else as of yet, I guess? I need more dark one. now. anything mirandus. why is nobody talking about this thing
also I feel the need to mention that there were she-ra references? like, references to the reboot, which is hands down my #2 favorite show (can't compete with dark but nothing can lol). and they were good references and they made sense. I started laughing hysterically when sophie said "hey adora". has brandon sanderson watched she-ra and the princesses of power? is this canon? I mean he definitely needs to

I’m rereading The Way of Kings for the… fifth…? Time now, and the way that he first describes bridge four. Right after his first run. Him saying that:
“… there was nothing more life could do to him, nothing worse than the slave’s brand with a shash, nothing worse than losing all he had to the war, nothing more terrible than failing those he’d sword to protect.
“It appeared that he’d been wrong. There had been something more they could do to him. One final torment the world had reserved just for Kaladin.
“And it was called Bridge Four.”
Knowing his character development, even through just the first book, and how much pride he eventually takes in being part of Bridge Four. I know that it’s mentioned in WoR and onward but it’s just so awesome to see how he considers it his final torment now, in chapter 6.

It is actually canon that Dalinar Kholin didnt even get through like his second conversation with Kaladin before handing him basically the Alethi equivalent to adoption papers
