i thought it might be interesting if my interpretation of the lamb had a cult mainly made of animals that have been used as sacrifice throughout history.
My thinking behind this is that lamb wants to reminded of their family and thus has decided to protect those that have been at higher risk of being sacrificed in the name of the old faith.
On the other hand my interpretation of the goat is more logical about who joins their cult though they still will take in people who need protection they are especially fond of horses I think
This list of animals comes the Wikipedia page for animal sacrifice, the Wikipedia page for rabbit test, an exhibit from the Smithsonian of a mummified cat, an article on the roots of easter, and articles about the history of the rabbit/hare in the moon
I ignored the many mentions of sheep and goats on the Wikipedia page.
Interestingly the most common ones mentioned after the sheep and goat are cows, pigs and birds
Below the cut is a list of animals a little about the history of them being sacrificed and wether or not we already have that follower form in cult of the lamb. I won't get very graphic with the history part though I will mention if they were specifically mummified. I will mainly be mentioning in what culture and religions they were used as sacrifice, what was thought to be gotten from the sacrifice and the deity the sacrifice was made to
Also domestic animals that people consider pets are in this list you have been warned
gazelle - not in cult of the lamb - only mentioned in the prehistory section of the wiki page and is found in ancient egypt specifically buried at the foot of a grave but it seems to have been rare
felines specifically domestic cats with fur - in cult of the lamb (also has a sphinx, lion, tiger) - while killing cats was considered a crime in ancient egypt there were many exceptions made as some specifically raised cats for sacrifice or people wished to be buried with their pets. Cats were mummified and given elaborate coffins
hippo - in cult of the lamb - once again in ancient egypt and only mentioned once in the wiki page most likely was in honor of powerful citizens or buried with an owner
baboon - not in cult of the lamb the closest we have is a monkey or gorilla - same thing as the hippo just with a baboon
cattle (includes cow, ox, bull, and buffalo) - in cult of the lamb as cow and bison though we don't have a bull, ox, buffalo though the bison follower is based on the American buffalo/bison maybe we could use a water buffalo - this one is mentioned to many times for me to go into much detail but here's how many times it's mentioned outside of the references on the wiki page Cattle 6 times, Cow 9 times, Bull 8 times, Buffalo 6 times, Ox 4 times, and heifer has 1
pig - in cult of the lamb - also to commonly used for me to go into detail though apparently Scythians would never sacrifice them and hated having swine on their land. Now for how often pig and swine are mentioned outside of the references and the Scythians section swine 2 times, pig 17 times
fowl includes geese, duck, pheasant and chicken but it's usually just listed as fowl so this will be a case by case thing so I'll only mention one of the bird if it's a livestock animal or is mentioned in the wiki page - in cult of the lamb as chicken and duck we don't have goose or pheasant - birds are used to much for me to go into detail so the times mentioned is happening again though the pheasant gets a bit of detail specifically it's a green pheasant that used to be sacrificed at Shinto festivals in Japan now for the times mentioned, bird 2 times, goose/geese 2 times, rooster/chicken 7 times, poultry 1 time, fowl 2 times, duck 1 time
horse (plus donkey) - in cult of the lamb as horse to be fair a donkey follower would look kinda the same in-game we also have a unicorn - horses and donkeys are mentioned as a possiblity in ancient greece but there doesn't seem to be much evidence for it, Scythians considered horses to be the most prestigious offering, large amounts of horses would be sacrificed in ancient china however this seems to be rare as the wiki page just has a picture in that section labeled Horse sacrifice to Duke Jing of Qi 5th century BCE China, horses have also been used in Japan as sacrifice in the same context as the pheasant
canines specifically domestic dogs and wild dogs - in cult of the lamb as dog, poppy (a schnauzer), Ralpherz and Frankerz we don't really have a wild dog but the wild canines we have are fox, fennec fox, and wolf - in ancient rome Robigo was specifically given red dogs (and red wine) for protection of crops from blight and red mildew, dogs and wild dogs were used in ancient china being sacrificed at different times of the year by nobles but these sacrifices would lessen if there were hard times the dogs were considered spirit guides, there's also the story of the church grim a black dog in church graveyards which comes from the belief that the first to be buried in a graveyard would have to guard it and help spirits but couldn't pass on so a dog was buried first
camel - not in cult of the lamb the closest we have is llama - used in Islam by those on pilgrimage to mecca during Eid al-Adha the wording of the wiki page implies that the camel is sacrificed by a group also mentions that the meat is shared amongst the community it's one of four species that are considered lawful for this sacrifice
bear - in cult of the lamb - sacrificed in Japan at some Shinto festivals as well as at lomante (イオマンテ) sometimes written as Iyomante (イヨマンテ) which is a ainu ceremony that uses a brown bear
deer - in cult of the lamb as deer, stag, moose and deer skull - sacrificed in Japan at some Shinto festivals
hare - not in cult of the lamb - Hares were buried with humans in neolithic age europe archaeologists interpret this as a religious ritual with hares representing rebirth this tradition continued for a long time, hares have also been used in rituals related to the beginning of spring which is likely the pagan origin of easter
rabbit - in cult of the lamb (there's also star bunny) - rabbits are less historically sacrificed but are still associated with it for example the story behind the rabbit in the moon is about self sacrifice though it's been interpreted as both hare and rabbit, there is also the rabbit test or friedman test an early pregnancy test rabbits were injected with the urine of a person who might be pregnant the rabbit is then dissected to look for changes in the ovaries other animals have been used for this but rabbits are the more well known one

The Followers (pt 1)
HEY YALL!! Finally got around to designing some of my COTL OCs which will be taking part in some future stories
Down below is some info about each of them from left to right! Some of it may be subject to changes futurely...
Enjoy <3
Astrid (she/her)
Rescued from Darkwood
Nurse apprentice
Was rescued by the Lamb while running away from heretics that chased her down the woods
A little clumsy, but tries her best and has an overall bubbly personality
Fun fact: Astrid was based off the pink-bow bunny from the official COTL animations!
Beau (he/him)
Rescued from Darkwood
The yellow cat! <3
Head-farmer and gardener of the cult, he is the one who decides which crops will be planted
Was a single child of a farmer family, they used to donate their crops to those who needed food
Managed to escape the heretics a few times, until eventually getting caught to be sacrificed to the Bishop of Chaos, thats when Lambert found and saved him
Felix (he/they/it)
Our little freaky lemur 😌 most of the followers think hes weird, but he does not mind and even finds such aversions quite amusing
Felix is a Witness. He was born in the cult a few years after Narinder became a follower, and turned into a Disciple somewhere before Lambert set off to free the Bishops from their Purgatory
One of the closests to the Lamb, he's seen as their little guy
Was raised by a lesbian couple that is still alive and love him very much <3
Tetris (she/her)
Rescued from Anura
Head-nurse of the Healing Bay, she mentors new nurses and defines their tasks
She used to have a family of her own, until they were taken away by illnesses and heretics
Very sweet and patient, sometimes quiet even, it takes a lot to get on this woman's nerves
Nanaty (she/her)
Rescued from Anchordeep
Widower; also used to have a family of her own, until they were slain by the heretics. Ever since then, Nanaty has resented the Old Faith and sought revenge
Was converted after fighting the Lamb during one of their crusades, with them promising to find the ones responsible for her tragedy. Once it was done, she swore her loyalty to the Lamb and became their guard
Loves children and is a natural mother, putting her guard down for the little ones whenever needed
Morris (he/him)
Rescued from Anura
Despite being a loyalty enforcer now, Morris was the first to dissent and very skeptical on his first days at the cult
Challenged the Lamb to a fight pit once, where he was brutally beaten up but spared at the end, taking the experience to learn from his stubborness
Nowadays he is the friendliest one to welcome new members of the cult and help them get used to their new home
Fun fact: altho Morris was based off on 2 bison followers I had in my gameplays, I also took inspo on the bison we see in the official COTL animations!

Cotl follower refs again! But this time I'm super duper tired coz I had to be woken up twice in the middle of the night to take my pain meds
Part 4 of my CotL follower refs
Tumblr media
Talor
Crab
He/him
59 years old
This man is basically universally hated by the Lamb’s followers because he's an asshole. He bosses people around like he's a disciple (which he's NOT), he purposefully gets in other people's way and he is not respectful at all. All he cares about is his wife and kid, everyone else is a bother to him. Sure, he's dedicated to the Lamb for taking him in, but he is just a real asshole
Husband of Coral. Father of Jino
Heather
Dog (schnauzer)
She/her
57 years old
Heather was born here and she'd like to say she's in charge of the kitchens, but a certain crab man stole her position. She's a bit crabby and rude, but in an endearing way if you get what I mean. Like she'll scold you for not telling her you're allergic to something while making you a whole new meal. She also gets grumpier when her partner is away, so there's that
Wife of Gala. Adopted mother of Thorn
Gono
Badger
They/them
54 years old
Gono was born and raised here. They love making shit and initially started out as a refiner when they were young but found their love for cooking later. They have three beautiful sons that they adore and dote on (especially after their partner passed away recently) and they get along great with Heather (they're basically besties
Parent of Bramble, Tregon & Julnar
Julian
Otter
He/him
34 years old
Julian was raised here and he loves this place. He likes making food, he likes hanging out with his friends and he recently developed a massive crush on a certain squid. Julian gets along with everyone (even Talor, but gods-damn it's hard to be nice to that guy) and loves giving gifts to people he's close to
Son of Thenanon. Brother of Mia
Siva
Bison
She/her
21 years old
Siva was brought here as a baby and was adopted by one of the disciples. She is a real quiet girl and just does as she's told, given she's still learning and doesn't want to get in the way. She doesn't have many close friends her age, but those she does, she adores.
Adopted daughter of Treon
Fun fact, these guys all work with Leshy in my AU and he has threatened putting poop in their food on multiple occasions! What a great workplace relationship he has

of course there is some caveats to this theory, one obviously being "of course the forms in game are going to be not 1 to 1 with their irl counterparts so its OBVIOUSLY not the goat or lamb" but to counteract that argument and to lean into this theory a little bit more, i feel as if the wiki is lying to us, and if not the wiki, then maybe the COTL Devs the images of this certain form are named "Deer Skull" and when viewing each image in the wiki popup, they are named "Deerskull_form.png", "Deerskull_form_2.png" and "Deerskull_form_3.png"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and we obviously know that these are DEFINITELY not a deer or stag follower form because the "Deer" form has no horns and the "Stag" form also has way different horns. Both forms also do not have the same muzzle shape in game and have a very small muzzle compared to the "Deer Skull" form
Tumblr media Tumblr media
its also worth noting that the "Stag" form has horns that are protruding UP and OUT rather than protruding from the JUST the SIDES to go even further, i over-layed every COTL follower form with horns protruding OUT and a big muzzle like the one showed in the Deer Skull form to test this theory and the ONLY follower form i found that was closest to this was the "Bison" follower form overlaying their forms via their eyes, which seem to be consistently in the same place with every follower form, you get this:
Tumblr media
of course you can already start to see the differences the muzzle being ever so slightly smaller, the horns also being the closest match, but no cigar. And before you say that "oh so this isn't a lamb or goat form because their horns also protrude from the top"... also wrong? both The Lamb and The Goat are non-binary in cannon, would this effect the way the horns are placed on a male and female Goat/Lamb forms? I have no idea! but even giving the doubters the benefit of said doubt and saying that all of the other lamb/goat forms are the same as the ones we play as in game, the forms are ever so obviously not a Deer, Stag, Bison, or any other form in the game, and the file name "Deerskull_form.png" is SUPER misleading. Even if it was just ripped from the game itself with the wiki handlers not even changing the name of said file to keep its integrity, its OBVIOUSLY NOT a DEER. And the question still remains What the fuck is this thing?
Tumblr media
THOSE ARE NOT DEER SKULLS!!
Hear me out!
I was sorting through the follower forms and came across these.
Tumblr media
And oh? What's that? The deer skull follower form?
Not quite. Let's look a little closer.
Tumblr media
That's better. Get a good look at this guy. If it was a deer skull, wouldn't it have more than one point on its 'antlers?'
Tumblr media
A deer skull, for reference. Comparing the two, especially with the stag follower form, it becomes glaringly obvious that the skull doesn't belong to a deer.
"But Copper!" You say. "Isn't it supposed to be a cow skull?"
I don't think so!
Take a good look at a cow skull here.
Tumblr media
The shape of the horns IS correct, I'll give you that! But what isn't correct?
The horns themselves. Take a closer look here-
Tumblr media
You see that?
Cows and bulls have smooth horns, with no ridges. Let's get a look at sheep for a second.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You see those? Those are ridged.
An argument could be made for it being a cow skull, yes, especially with the actual shape of the horns. But, isn't it more fun to picture it as a sheep? Doesn't it create more of a compelling story? Especially with one of the alternative forms of it-
Tumblr media
Face stained with tears of blood.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, COTL fandom! I'd love to hear everybody's thoughts.
