Smol blurb before I serve the main dish (I just had an idea while I was in the shower and decided to write this off mid-shampoo lmao also is kind of a teeny tiny spoiler for my upcoming fic)
We all have seen Young tween/teen Damian Wayne in the animated movies right?? This Morally grey gremlin who's ready to chop off anyone's ankles?
Bro grows up to be a doctor. He's like a person who's not only emotionally in touch with others, but also helps other through his skills. He's well aware of boundaries and space at this age, something that he wasn't aware of when he was a child (remember how he went through Kor'i's laptop and put trackers on all of the Teen Titans? Yeah, bro's come a long way).
Except with you. He's a total ass with you though (affectionately). So melodramatic, so clingy. Literal leech mode 24/7 with you when he's at home. Also snoops a lot. Like a lot a lot. Goes through your phone like it's his own.
And when your girl friends point out that this is a red flag behavior and Damian is insecure as fuck, you just shrug and say it's because you trust him. Because you do, and it's not about him being insecure, it's more like Damian wants to know about every inch of your life. Privacy goodbye.
Acts like the cats on internet that will follow you to the bathroom/shower to "protect you" from the water but will stand behind the shower curtain because they don't wanna get wet.
(He opened your yaoi tabs on chrome once. Never again.)
All in all, Damian invades your privacy all the time. Not in an annoying "I'm watching your every move" kind of way, but more of a "I'm here to take a peek into your life because if I don't know everything about you I might just die".
#damian wayne x reader#damian al ghul x reader#batboys x reader#batfam x reader#blurb#whimsy thoughts ☆#yes I'm one of the people who had a crush on him when I was 13#still do but pls make him grow up DC#it's kinda awkward explaining others that no I'm not a shotacon I'm not crushing on the 13 YEAR OLD I'm crushing on the grown up version#grown up version that existed in the old vintage DC comics but for some reason he's stuck at puberty these days#glad others also have a similar experience#because I couldn't have been the only 13 year old who loved this little katana chaos robin

new metric for media literacy for film bros is if they understand the barbie movie.
the kens are first presented as accessories to their barbies and it's pointed out loud that they don't even have places to stay in barbieland. one of the barbies straight up asks "wait, where do the kens stay?". they're just arm candy made to look pretty and cool while the barbies run their world.
but that's fucked up!!! the film presents it as fucked up! that's why ken screams "YOU FAILED ME!" and why he is insecure in the first place because he wanted to be respected and seen as a person, not someone who only exists in relation to someone else. should he have done what he did? no!!! that's why it's part of the conflict! the root of both of their breakdowns was in their society in that the barbies are supposed to be perfect and the kens exist in relation to them! it's barbie and ken. he was a footnote. that's why barbie apologizes to him in the end and tells him he can be himself. she doesn't have to exist by some set of rules and neither does he! it's barbie and it's ken! sure, the resolution to the whole barbieland issue wasn't perfect, BUT KEN'S WHOLE ARC IS ABOUT HOW THEIR WORLD FAILED MEN. WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS MOVIE WAS 'WOMEN GOOD MAN BAD'. WHAT ABOUT THE NUANCE
#barbie#headcanon he got her house by the end btw. it's the mojo dojo casa house but it's also the dreamhouse dhdgdhshsj#look im sick of seeing the takes that are like hurr durr it's just another anti man movie#okay explain why they portrayed ken in a sympathetic light. his actions were fucked up but you could see exactly why he did them.#and in the end he is berated for his wrongs but also told that he doesn't have to continue down that path. did you miss the critique#did the pink blind you so much you couldn't see past it. did you american psycho this shit again dhdgdgdhd#barbie spoilers

Art prompt of Shen Qingqiu holding the aro flag (fits his color scheme)
the real reason this man doesn't realise he's tripping every romance flag in the story
#svsss#scum villain#shen qingqiu#sqq#aro#aromantic flag#i'm now just stuck on the idea of sqq trying to explain the nuance of pride flags to the Qing Jing Peak disciples#he Does Not Want to have this conversation#it started when he realised he was going to have to have The Talk with his disciples at SOME point and couldn't figure out a way#to finesse them into going to talk to mqf about it instead. it rapidly derailed as sqq got more muddled up in modern day terminology and#the Scholarly Peak Disciples would NOT fucking let it go#he would really rather die than continue this conversation; this man went through enough of his (2 lives) life without examining his own#sexuality he does NOT intend to start now!! please stop asking clarifying question!! you know what just don't have sex ever!!!#just!!!! don't date!!!!!! don't do that!!!! isn't it better for everyone to just not do that?????? conversation over!#my art#thanks for the suggestion!

I think one of my favourite character journeys in BSD has to be Kunikida learning to be better with kids because you'd expect it to be a fun wholesome character arc. Only, it ends up being heart breaking as it's immediately turned against Kunikida.
Despite the 'Dad status' that the fandom has given Kunikida, he was actually terrible with kids towards the start of the manga.
Take how he treated Atsushi in the first chapter. (Yes, Atsushi is not a little kid, but he was a starving and vulnerable orphan when they met.) When Kunikida and Dazai mention the 'man-eating tiger' Atsushi immediately freaks out and tries to run away.
What does Kunikida do? He grabs Atsushi, slams him to the floor and then threatens to break his arm for information.

It's Dazai of all people who has to reign Kunikida in reminding him "The boss himself warned you that the gathering of intelligence needn't be an interrogation". Dazai was the sweet talker and Kunikida was threat, even to a terrified, starving orphan.
Later with Kyouka, he's not much better. He attempts to intimidate her into giving the agency information. Whilst Atsushi now fulfils the role of the gentle approach. She's a mafia assassin after all, even if he knows she had no choice in it, Kunikida treats her as a threat before he treats her as a child.

Even with Aya, the interaction that gave Kunikida his 'dad status', he started off badly. But, it is here we start to see Kunikida trying to be better, trying to take a softer approach, even if he's clumsy with it.
When he realizes Aya was just handed a bomb, he snatches it from her and gets rid of it. That can't be helped it was a literal ticking time bomb, he then phones the authorities to deal with it. He was planning to leave, it's only because he caught sight of Aya sitting alone did he approach her. It wasn't his first instinct.
If he hadn't seen her in that moment, he might not have gone looking for her at all.

He asks her if she's alright and then she shocks him by wanting to hunt down the culprit. He rightfully tries to dissuade her, but again, he's not good with kids, he's blunt and argumentative with her.

Obviously, that's not going to convince a kid with a hero complex to not chase the bad guy.
However, his turning point, in my opinion, is when he realizes he has to choose between Aya and the people on the train. Now, he had already set off the stun grenade and is putting all his faith in Yosano finding them. He trusts her so he knows they are most likely going to be okay.
But Aya doesn't know that and he can't explain it all in the time they have. He sees a child who thinks she's about to die and is trying to be brave about it. And Kunikida comforts her. He needs her to know that she's not alone, that she's not going to suffer, that he is with her and he hugs her.
There was no need for him to step into that explosion with Aya except to comfort her. He chose to do that. Above his own life, he chose her needs.

And that's where this journey starts to get heartbreaking, because Kunikida hadn't always been like this. He was obviously always going to try and protect children, his ideals state as much, but he also didn't believe himself to be a hero. He doesn't see himself as someone capable or even worthy of that role.
So he built up a barrier around himself that made him harsher and more callous. He called it a professional detachment. He had to, it was to protect himself, to keep his sanity in those moment when they couldn't save everyone. Now it's breaking down and he's showing more and more how much he cares.
And it's immediately used against him.
The very scenario that got him to open up is placed in front of him again. A child with a bomb around their throat. Only this time Yosano isn't there, and this time Fyodor is orchestrating it.
And Kunikida does everything right. He tells Atsushi to leave and carry on the mission so he can stay and help the child. He gets on the child's level, makes himself small and none threatening. He reassures the child in gentle voice that everything will be okay.

And then, it's the line "How about a magic trick?" that really gets me, because he's trying so hard to present himself as someone trustworthy. And a magic trick is exactly what he pulled off with Aya, but it's what goes wrong here.
Because Fyodor planned it this time. He didn't just target children to get at Kunikida, he made a twisted mockery of what happened to Aya. Except she doesn't live this time and Kunikida can't bring this child any comfort or safety because Kunikida is the threat. This child dies alone and afraid because Kunikida was there, just like Fyodor planned.
Fyodor saw Kunikida bare his heart once and immediately reached in his chest and crushed it.

#bungou stray dogs#bsd#bsd kunikida#rambling#long post#And then there's what happened in Dazai's entrance exam#which probably explains why he's ended up so closed off from kids#because he couldn't save the one he took in the first time#and didn't want to go through it again#but this post already ended up long enough#so I'm calling it here

rewatchng tfatws, and i don't trust ANY of you people in the "john walker did nothing wrong" camp, he killed a surrendering man in a fit of rage, lied to lemar's family about it, then tried to kill sam too, when he felt that his status as captain america was being threatened.
#'but his best friend died his reaction is understandable!!!' actually i don't think it is#explainable sure#but killing someone because you couldn't control your emotions and attempting to do it a second time is not understandable in the slightest#the falcon and the winter soldier#tfatws#anti john walker#the fact that this man even needs an anti tag is insane but whatever#thing is i actually like him as a character i think he's very well written and makes for an interesting antagonist#but the fact that people are defending this man is so baffling to me and frankly suspicious as hell#the show could not have made their intentions with his character more clear#and yet people are still out here missing the point entirely

The thing you need to remember about comics ages and timelines is that yeah it's messy there are retcons at stuff and it will never be clear and perfect. But also, DC has an interest portraying age the way they do. They have an interest in aging Barbara down so she can be Dick's pretty girlfriend with whom he raises a cute dog (and maybe a cute little family next perhaps?). They have an interest in trying to keep Tim young and draw him younger than he looks so they can milk his Robin's popularity for as long as possible. They have an interest in drawing Jason to make him look 40 when Bruce slits his throat, to make him look like a grown man fighting a teenager when fighting Mia even though they're the same age (though i mantain that mia is a little bit older), in having him call Tim kid even though they're the same age, in having him offer Tim a drink and Tim pointing out he's not legal when Jason isn't either. They have an interest in Jason looking older in Jim Aparo's art style in ADITF than he looked in precrisis or in 308. They have an interest in Steph magically looking older in War Games, where she gets tortured and brutally murdered, than the fun colourful round and much more youthful art from her Robin run. There are probably many more examples but bottom line it's not fucking innocent. DC knows how to hire artists that know how to draw children it's really not that hard. Characters who look young, characters who remind you that they are young, create more empathy; which is good when you want the public to continue to root for them, and bad when those characters challenge the status quo or that excess of empathy might create pushback after you decide to have them brutally murdered. DC can't have Batman grievously wounding and causing the death of his underage son, but if he looks as old as Batman? DC can't have Jason making a valid point about vigilantism being unsafe for Mia and relating with her with childhood sexual abuse subtext because it makes the heroes (and especially Batman) look bad, but if it looks like this is a grown ass man harassing a teenage girl, then it's clear who is the villain, it's okay, no problem. DC needs Barbara to be younger so the power dynamic between her and Dick fits their idea of a perfect little nuclear family much better and they can shove Barbara back into the role of Batgirl even though she is very much a girl rather than a woman. DC needs Steph to look older when she's tortured so they can be edgy without people being too horrified at them doing something horrifying, DC needs Jason and Steph to look older on the day they die because young looking= innocent which makes it so much harder to victim-blame. DC needs Mia to look younger than Jason so they can make it look like the good old "good victim/bad victim" dichotomy and even though that's not what the story is actually about, regardless of how much it disrespects Mia's character to do so. DC needs Jason to look ugly because it's harder to empathize with ugly people and it makes it so much clearer who is the bad guy and who is the good one, and it's a much easier dichotomy, so much more comfortable than challenging the whole mythos around which Batman is built. DC needs Barbara to be sexy in their traditional male-gaze way, because this is the audience they're trying to appeal to.
So like, I know that I'm nit-picking when I say "actually according to any and all logic Jason is younger than Tim by a couple of months and than Mia by around three years". Or when I say "they should bring back Dickbabs' old age difference" or even interact with Dickbabs as if they still have that difference and refuse to interact with Tom Taylor's version of the ship. I know comics are incoherent and the timeline is messy; but just because it's messy, just because it's always been, doesn't mean it's innocent. So I'm gonna keep nitpicking, and I'm gonna stay an annoying bitch, because I refuse to allow comics to manipulate me out of my empathy. And because I don't see everything and am very aware of how easy it is to be manipulated even when you're careful, I encourage you to add to this with things you've noticed whether it's in portrayal or in art about character age, appearance, or any other device they might use to manipulate our perception of the characters -and what narrative these resorts serve.
#i couldn't find any specific example there so I didn't include it#but that also works for the infantilisation of Cass both in the fandom and canon#why are you portraying this grown adult woman as younger than she is?? could it be because she's disabled and asian? surely not#anyway stay annoying stay critical and remember if the opportunity arises it's never a bad time to egg tom taylor's car#dc#dc comics#dc critical#also like do not come at me and “correct” me with the tim jason and mia age difference thing#i have in fact read those comics you can ask me to explain and you can disagree with that analysis but don't “um actually” me#please and thank you

okay like i know this is technically giyuu cutting off his hair to symbolize new beginnings and letting go of burdens and stuff but it's 10x funnier to imagine it as him as trying to make up for cutting off tanjirou's hair back when they first met. like as an apology for cutting off the ponytail. and now all i can think of is giyuu seeing tanjirou throughout the series and internally repeating "oh shit, the hair still hasn't grown out, what have i done"
#the real reason he couldn't explain to shinobu swiftly. and he snapped out of this when she almost stabbed him#giyuu tomioka#tanjiro kamado#and mentioned#shinobu kocho#demon slayer#fanart

Edit: Turning off reblogs on this post since I've been told it contains misinformation. Also, someone reblogged it with a huge rant and blocked me (as far as I can tell), leaving me unable to reply and with only partial notes and that freaks me out.
So I was telling someone about my boy, Sejong the Great of Joeson, who deserves that title "great" since he was so concerned about illiteracy that he created the easy-to-learn Korean alphabet (Hangul) by himself, but then the nobility got mad about all these reading peasants and tried to ban it. And my friend says, "Oh, I thought illiterate poor people in the past were just lazy."
And I was like, "No, no, you don't want your indentured servants and peasants reading and figuring out how much you are screwing them over. The adapted Chinese characters that Korea had been using took years to learn so it was a natural gatekeeper of knowledge."
And then, because one must be fair, I went on to explain how Europeans locked up their knowledge behind Latin, especially the Bible, and how it was so important that Martin Luther translated it into everyday German, because once you can read the Bible yourself, you can challenge the almost absolute power of the church. Only the rich could afford to learn Latin, so only the rich could read the book that their entire society was allegedly based around.
I do think things are much better today, but why are most scientific papers paywalled and scientists sometimes act as if they should be treated like infallible priests...
Edit: I wanted to end this post on a happy note, but then I started thinking about paywalls and it made me a bit depressed. We still do make our best knowledge less accessible to the average person and I hope we can do more to change that.
#science#history#literacy#you will pry my books from my cold dead hands#if you can't explain your research you can't expect people to blindly follow you#so difficult to have absolute power once people can read#also i couldn't access papers that i wrote myself once i wasn't working at a university#but the main point is that poor people aren't lazy#they did this on purpose

having complicated feelings about the politics of rage
like that specific kind of debate bro whose videos are all "liberal DESTROYED raging feminist OWNED by calm facts and logic haha i'm so smart and cool" who thinks anyone not in a perfect stoic state must immediately be wrong (and by proxy their ability to "argue" about things that don't affect them divisive topics calmly means they must be right)
seeing people finding their ways to scream into the void for reaping week or vent the anger and indignity at how screwed up our world is... why is it so taboo? why is it so bad to be upset at, yknow, things that should upset any rational, compassionate person?
because yeah, anger isn't rational and tends to find targets rather than solutions, but for fluff's sake it doesn't just go away! you can't turn off your passion! and you shouldn't! you should be upset! you should be upset about climate change and billionaires and rising fascism! you should be upset that the world is unjust!
but we've created, or accepted, or failed to question, this framework where being calm makes you more correct and being visibly passionate or upset is a bad thing, where being riled up by someone who thinks you don't deserve rights is a sign of weakness, where caring loudly and vibrantly is somehow bad optics because being angry looks bad.
angry people are dangerous. angry people can't be trusted. angry people shouldn't be listened to. angry people can't control their emotions. angry people should just calm down. angry people should be subdued.
just shut up and take it already, won't you?
like. look. the doomerism and despair is strong outside of communities like this. so often i find myself asking where is your rage!? where is your hope?! your joy, your passion, your conviction that a better world will be made!
i spent a long time drowning in some pretty rough crap. when i managed to crawl out of it, the first thing i felt was relief. the second was burning, white-hot rage that i had lived like this, that i had been allowed to live like this. anxiety makes you want to shrink down, be as small as possible, as unintrusive, as unnoticeable. anger told me to be loud, be bright, be visible, shout from the rooftops that i deserved better, turn passion into action instead of wallowing.
yes, i am angry at the world and i should be. i am upset that people who have more money than i can even conceive of can run the planet into the ground and blame me for using too much plastic. i am upset that my existence is someone else's political fodder they can fearmonger about for engagement. i am upset that people are dying over numbers on a graph and lines on a map. i am upset that billions of dollars for guns and tanks gets written off without question, but the single mother of two on food stamps is what's draining the budget. i am upset and i'm not going to apologize for it, because that isn't "letting my emotions control me," it's having basic fluffing compassion for other people.
sorry i can't be calm like you while you're holding a gun to my head. it must be easier when it's your finger on the trigger.
#possumposting#solarpunk#vent#reaping week#hurr durr i proposed executing everyone like you and you couldn't keep a perfectly neutral expression and tone explaining why i shouldn't#biting you biting you biting you
