First Assignment of Data Management and Visualization

Step 1: Choose a dataset

After looking through the GapMinder Codebook, I have have decided that I am particularly interested in “Child Employment”.

Step 2: Identify a specific topic of interest 

I want to explore the association between gender and child employment in the agricultural sector.

Research Question: What is the correlation between gender and child employment in agriculture?

Step 3: Prepare a codebook of your own (i.e., print individual pages or copy screen and paste into a new document) from the larger codebook that includes the questions/items/variables that measure your selected topics.)

I selected the following variables on the codebook-

According to the codebook it can be seen that, the data shows the percentage of different countries boys and girls engaged in agriculture from 1998 to 2014.

Step 4: Identify another specific topic of interest 

The second topic i want to explore is the child employment in agricultural sector.

Research Question: How agriculture is associated with child employment?

Step 5: Add questions/items/variables documenting this second topic to your personal codebook.

Step 6: Literature Review

A short investigation on the internet immediately show many studies about the topic at hand.

Child employment is associated with agriculture from primitive times. In the father’s farm, son’s work is a daily occurrence in the villages. These children and their families give less important to education than work. As a result, children get engaged in work at an early age.

Step 7: Based on your literature review, develop a hypothesis about what you believe the association might be between these topics.

My assumption is:

Due to lineage, children have to be involved in agriculture. But the rate of involvement in agriculture is lower for girls than in boys.

After looking through the codebook for the Outlook on Life Surveys study, I have decided that I am particularly interested in ideas and beliefs that make people vote in U. S. It is a really interesting topic there are lots of reasons you here about why you should vote and why it matters to vote when you read articles or engage in discussions but i want to know which factors are meaningfully correlated with leading people to vote and to know what should be changed or be made better by government to encourage people to vote. I specifically like to study more about the relation of people’s belief of how their wants affect government decisions with voting. Based on my reviews. there seems to be a relation between how strongly people think they effective and their willingness to vote but it is not proven in terms of data and mathematics but to go further we could study the causes that make a person believe that he is influential on his government.
