pairing : kang minhee x reader
“hurry up minhee, how long does it take to put a mop away?” you question, taking your phone out from your pocket and glancing at the time. you and minhee had stayed back after class to help your teacher clean the classroom, not knowing that you’d be roped into nearly an hour of tidying, sorting and cleaning everything in sight. when minhee finally emerged from the storage closet, you looked up at his hair, which was sticking out in the weirdest of places. “did you get attacked by a broom while you were in there or something?”, you remarked, earning a small smirk from minhee as he responded, “yeah right, let’s just get our bags and we can finally taste sweet freedom”.
as you began walking home, you took out your airpods that had been attentively decorated by minhee; an abundance of sparkly stickers and a pale purple friendship keyring embellished the case. you thought back to the night you had let him have full reign over the sticker sheet, the night you realised you liked him as more than just a best friend. handing one of the earbuds to him, you hit shuffle on a playlist you had made the night before, one you had carefully crafted specifically for your long walks home from school with him. “damn this is a good playlist, i think this may be your greatest achievement y/n”, minhee approved as he nodded his head in time to the mellifluous sounds of ‘fly to my room’ by bts. you answered his compliment with a small nudge of your shoulder, knocking him to the side a few steps, “you can stop with the compliments now minhee, you know you’ll inflate my ego too much”.
to your luck, the two of you lived merely a street apart so you could pretty much walk all the way home together. usually, you two would go your separate ways when you reached the corner of the road but this time was slightly different. minhee followed you all the way to your fading pale pink front door, only stopping when he reached the edge of your front garden. “is there any reason you’ve walked me to my house or..?, you inquired. his response threw you off as his ears started to turn a dark shade of red as he ran his hand through his fluffy mop of hazel hair. “ahaha no, no reason. i guess i was just too immersed in that playlist”, he lied. “ah okay, well i’ll see you tomorrow at 7:30 like always?”, you ask, trying to prompt a genuine response from your best friend who’s expression was, for the first time in all the years you’d known him, hard to read. “of course, like always”, he replied and headed back the way you had come.
you stood at your doorway for a second, you didn’t know if it was sheer confusion or a strange daze that he had put you in but something compelled you to run after him. “minhee wait”, you called out in hope that he would stop walking so damn fast, carried by his long legs. to your surprise, he stopped dead in his tracks and turned around, waiting for you to catch up as he was already halfway down the road. “you okay?”, he questioned, a slightly concerned and puzzled look painted across his face. for a moment it felt as it time had stopped, you were stood in front of your best friend of 6 years about to confess your feelings and it didn’t feel real. you took the opportunity to scan his face before you started talking; you could see the curve of his lips and the scatter of freckles that adorned his perfect nose, a face so familiar yet still so endearing.
“okay look, don’t be weird about this but i like you”, you began, desperately trying to read minhee’s face for any sign of a social cue. without any luck, you resorted to the only thing you could think of, the one thing that had been constantly playing on your mind in the recent months. reaching your hands up and placing them on his shoulders awkwardly, you moved your face only inches away from his. examining his face once more, you realised that he had closed his eyes in anticipation. ‘why has he got to be so cute for?’ you thought to yourself as you let your lips melt into his. his hand found his way to your face, cupping your cheek as he deepened the kiss, making the butterflies in your stomach go crazy. after a few moments, you broke away which incidentally forced you to look directly into his chocolate brown eyes. you looked up at the gold and grey flecks that you had been noticing for years, only now could you be completely shameless with your staring.
“hi”, he breathed. “hey minhee”, you replied. he must’ve noticed the heat travelling across his cheeks and onto the bridge of his freckled nose, you thought, as he looked down timidly. you carefully took his hand from its place on your face and intertwined your fingers, an action you had so innocently done many times before but this time, this time it felt different. “so i guess you like me too?”, he asked, regaining his slightly confident behaviour that you had grown to be so fond of. “i guess it does”, you clarified, prompting a soft smile from your favourite person in the world. everything felt so right, it was almost as if everything in you had been waiting for him in order to feel complete. you started leading him back to your house, insisting that your mum would let him stay for dinner. you realised that you felt lighter on your feet and you couldn’t fight the corners of your mouth from turning upwards, an effect that you hoped he would give you forever.
