There aren’t many giveaways of Canary Wharf’s former trading past but Billingsgate Market stands as a rather sizeable reminder – even if it did only move from its former premises in the City of London in the 1980s. The past is cleverly brought to life via interesting stories and tidbits – there’s even a full-scale reconstruction of Sailortown as it would have stood in Victorian times.

Tucked away on North Dock, the Museum of London Docklands is one of the most interesting Canary Wharf sights: a free museum packed with exhibits telling the history of the Docklands area. Need a little nudge? Check out my interview with Gillie and Marc whose sculpture sits a short walk from Canary Wharf station. Taking a wander around the area in search of quirky sculptures and large-scale installations is one of the best free things to do in Canary Wharf. Camille Walala’s mural is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to public art in Canary Wharf. It used to be the case that Canary Wharf was thought of as a cultural tumbleweed but those days are long gone. Stroll underneath the arched canopy and peek at the plants within – organised by hemisphere and representing Canary Wharf’s former life as a port when goods from around the world would have landed right here brought by the West India Dock Company. Crossrail Place Roof Garden Crossrail Place GardenĬanary Wharf might be a big bowl of skyscraper soup, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some lush green spots to hang out in when you want to.Įnter the gorgeous Crossrail Place Roof Garden – bursting with verdant growth mere steps away from the bustle and hubbub below. Blending stark geometric shapes and striking colours, you shouldn’t miss it. Walala, who’s been making quite a splash in London’s street art scene in recent years, created the work as part of the city’s first mural festival. Camille Walala Street Art at Adams Plaza BridgeĬamille Walala’s bold mural on Adams Plaza Bridge instantly elevated itself straight to the top of the list of cool things to do in Canary Wharf as soon as it was put up last year.

Bracknell Forest Council commissioned Artscape Management who appointed artist Kerry Lemon to create the artwork that depicts plants found across the borough. This is an important day for rail travel and for the millions of passengers who will use the Elizabeth Line when services start in December next year.
London Transport Commissioner Mike
Think-tank IPPR North recently found that £1,943 is being spent per person in London on current or planned transport projects compared with just £427 in the North.
The Crossrail programme remains on time and on budget, and the huge success of this project shows how vital it is for the whole of the country that we also push ahead with Crossrail 2.

Fourteen green spaces you should see at Open Garden Squares Weekend
Tumblr media
The gardens of 10 Downing Street and the Highbury Stadium housing development, as well as allotments, hidden roof gardens, and some popup flowerbeds at Barbican station, are among some 230 green spaces open to the public on 17 and 18 June as part of Open Garden Squares Weekend.
The festival began as a bid to make the gardens in of some of London’s poshest squares accessible for the likes of us, if only for a couple of days a year. So anyone who’s ever contemplated re-enacting that scene from Notting Hill when Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts climb the fence into a garden square, good news: for one weekend only, you can get into those normally closed-off spaces in a legit way, and with no risk of impaling yourself on a spiked fence.
Here are some of the gardens already turning us green with envy – and which you can go visit on a weekend ticket.
Barbican Wildlife Garden, EC2
One of three gardens for the residents of the Barbican Estate (who knew?). There’ll be a poet in residence there over the weekend, and plants for sale.
Barnsbury Wood, N1
The former garden of a local house, now untamed. You might wonder how there can be woodland this centrally in London. Turns out it’s the city’s smallest nature reserve.
British Medical Association Council Garden, WC1
A tranquil feature designed by architect Edward Lutyens within the BMA’s Bloomsbury headquarters. Handily, it’s planted with medicinal herbs.
The Castle Garden, N4
One of London’s lesser-known oddities, The Castle was not actually built a fortification but as a Victorian water-pumping station. Today it’s a climbing centre with a café supplied by its very own kitchen garden.
The Compound, Stave Hill Ecological Park, SE1
A park sitting on former Rotherhithe dockland, the Compound is there to promote sustainability. There are family activities on offer all weekend, including marsh digging (more fun than it sounds), and building insect houses.
Crossbones Memorial Garden, SE1
A garden - temporary for now - which commemorates a site believed to have been used as a burial ground for Southwark prostitutes in past centuries. History tours are scheduled for Saturday 17 June.
Crossrail Roof Garden, E14
An exotic greenhouse above Canary Wharf station, this feature offers a programme of events beyond the Open Garden Squares Weekend, including occasional theatre performances.
Eversheds Sutherland Vegetable Garden, EC2
In a striking example of nominative determinism, law firm Eversheds has been planted with a roof garden. Look out for the beehives, as well as views of the surrounding City. Refreshments on offer, too.
Fulham Palace Meadows Allotments, SW6
A site with Anglo-Saxon history, this working allotment is reportedly used by a snapshot of West London society, comprising some 400 plots. Plants for sale, as well as teas and coffees.
Garden Barge Square, off SE1
A rare example of a garden that doesn’t exist on – well - land. These moorings near Tower Bridge have existed for centuries, but only recently planted.
Highbury Stadium Square, N5
The site of Arsenal FC for almost 100 years, Highbury Stadium was converted into housing after 2006. The pitch is now a minimalist garden. You’ll have to book a tour if you want to see this one.
Inner Temple Garden, EC4Y
The definition of urban oasis, this calm space in the heart of London’s legal-land dates back to the 1100s and is supposedly the site on which the War of the Roses began.
Skip Garden, N1
The Skip Garden might sound like pure rubbish, but is actually a treasured, mobile educational asset which is now in its fourth home. Separate skips have different plantings by theme. Tours available, and a café.
Tate Modern Community Garden, SE1
Affiliated with the great art gallery is a gated garden used by locals for growing fruit and herbs, and with a wildlife pond as well. Only open on the Saturday afternoon.

Pursuitist Q&A With Mike Hussey, One of London’s Top Real Estate Developers
Pursuitist loves to keep up with luxury trends around the globe, and one of our favorite areas to explore is the ever changing market of real estate and luxury developments. London is of particular interest, as the city has seen a strong influx of high-end buyers from around the globe in recent years. To learn more about market trends, as well as one of the highest-profile new developments in the area, Centre Point, we spoke with Mike Hussey, Chief Executive of luxury development group Almacantar, in this exclusive Pursuitist Q&A. Hussey gave us trend insights, as well as a first look at this exciting new development, which boasts a £55 million penthouse unit!
Who do you anticipate living in Centre Point? What makes this development unique?
There isn’t a ‘typical’ buyer. We’ve had a range of ages, nationalities and professions interested in living at Centre Point. The common reason is that they love the building, the views and the location.
Centre Point offers a rare opportunity to own and invest in a residential building unlike any other, located in the cultural centre of London, the West End, which is currently undergoing a complete transformation with the addition of the new Crossrail station and a newly developed pedestrian square lined with shops and restaurants. Centre Point is one of London’s original skyscrapers and was built at a time when London was transforming itself from a gloomy post-war capital into a fashionable, exciting and vibrant city. Centre Point captured the adventurous spirit of the swinging sixties – an era of innovation, individualism, collaboration and aspiration. Recognised for its “architectural innovation,” Centre Point was given Grade II listed status in 1995. With its prominent place on London’s skyline and distinct design which includes 3-metre-high neon Centre Point letters at the top of the 34-story building, Centre Point quickly became a London landmark and acts as a navigational tool for visitors to the city.
Centre Point will offer 82 apartments, ranging from 1-bedroom apartment to a 5-bedroom duplex penthouse.
What’s so special about this location?
Centre Point is a hub between Covent Garden; Soho and the prime shopping area of Oxford Street. It will have access to the Elizabeth Line, which is one of the most ambitious and complex infrastructure programmes ever undertaken in the UK.
What makes London such an attractive market for buyers now?
The city’s geographical position, language, culture, skilled workforce, quality of life, legal systems and healthcare and education programmes make it a great place to live and work. London is a cosmopolitan city that has everything in one place – financial and insurance services, advisory services, technology and creative industries, government, research centres and top educational institutions.
View from Centre Point Penthouse
The penthouse in this building is quite an investment at £55 million. Who do you expect to purchase this penthouse, and what makes it so unique?
The £55 million duplex penthouse is the crown jewel of the building. It offers two floors of living space connected by a curved stairwell, a panoramic terrace, and 360 degree views of London’s West End. It will be acquired by an aficionado of good taste that recognises that there is nothing else like it in London.
What are the main requests you’re seeing now from buyers in this luxury market?
Location and quality remain the most important aspect in super-prime residential and drive Almacantar’s investment strategy. Centre Point and Marble Arch Place are the best examples of this.
How are you mixing the historic nature of the building with the modern amenities luxury buyers are seeking?
Each Almacantar project is unique so we adapt our approach accordingly. For Centre Point we appointed Conran & Partners to work on the apartments. The renowned British designers designed the apartments by combining the spirit of the building, the energy of the 1960s and the equally vibrant and creative spirit of London today. Luxurious materials, and the best in British craftsmanship and design, will underpin the quality of the apartments. Residents at Centre Point will have access to exclusive amenities including residents lounge and screening room, a gym, a full-service spa and treatment rooms, a swimming pool, meeting and boardrooms, 24-hour concierge, and 24-hour security. Additionally, we’ve collaborated with renowned artists Cerith Wynn Evans and Richard Wentworth to install bespoke art pieces throughout the building.
What impact, if any, will Brexit have on the real estate market in London?
London will continue to thrive after the UK leaves the European Union simply because it trades with the whole world. The issues are largely political. Business and people have a desire to continue to expand and grow, an opportunity that London presents to all. In property terms, access to the market requires skill and vision but the best investments are immune to much of the geo-political volatility generated elsewhere in the world.
What’s next on the horizon for Almacantar?
Almacantar’s portfolio includes: Centre Point, Marble Arch Place, CAA House, One and Two Southbank Place, Lyons Place and 125 Shaftesbury Avenue. Centre Point will be the first of Almacantar’s portfolio to debut in the fall of 2017, followed by commercial spaces at One and Two Southbank in 2018, mixed-use retail and housing at Lyons Place in 2019, and ultra-luxury offices and apartments at Marble Arch Place in 2020.

Infrastructure: Are we any good?
Ben Ruse, Social Communications MD (London & SE) takes a look at our recent record in delivering infrastructure and asks what we might learn from the railways. Well, he was director of communications of HS1 for ten years and lead spokesperson for HS2 for three, so he would do that, wouldn’t he…
Tumblr media
We have a fascinating relationship with infrastructure in the UK. In my experience our relationship with new infrastructure is quite unique.
While those statements may sound more positive than they are - even endearing!! – the truth is somewhat more frustrating.
Infrastructure provides the backbone that all economies rely on. The ability to move around, to transfer information, to meet, to speak, to exchange ideas all rely on the right infrastructure. Without infrastructure, there’s precious little interaction.
So why then do we have such difficulty delivering infrastructure? Historically, the UK gained a reputation for short term planning, delayed implementation, poor design and out dated construction techniques that invariably meant projects suffered from late deliver and an inability to stick to budget.
Somewhat ironically, what often lay at the heart of this reputation was an honest desire to get it right. Nothing delays the start of big projects than a desire to over-justify their existence. What seem like endless Business Case Analyses, Economic Justification Reports, Cost:Benefit Ratio Planning and the like apparently have to be produced, poured over, reproduced, studied, adjusted and then withdrawn before there’s even the slightest sense of agreement. One thing is true: Stick 10 economists in a room and ask them to agree even a model for analysing the productivity of any significant infrastructure and no more than 6 will ever agree (and the remainder tend to be pretty vocal in their opposition).
Trying to get politicians to look forward beyond the fixed term of Parliament is almost impossible. Heaven forbid that we could have a view that stretched decades into the future.
Mercifully (though still far too slowly), we seem at last to be moving in the right direction. It has been peculiarly frustrating that we have taken such a long time to recognise that we are actually becoming quite good at doing infrastructure in this country. Billions and billions of pounds are now invested in projects like HS1, Crossrail, HS2, the London 2012 Olympics legacy, a nationwide strategic road network improvement programme, etc are all being progressed and delivered on time and on budget. Of course, cost overruns and delays will always make the headlines (and there seems to be a strange national desire to almost revel in an imagined inability for us to “do” infrastructure… and it’s true, for every success there does seem to be a mismanaged, miscommunicated disaster). But we’re getting there.
One of the symptoms of this progress can be seen in the railway sector. Quite how much stations have improved over the last decade or so is astonishing. I worked on the HS1 project for some 10 years so I  acknowledge my bias but the project to renovate St Pancras International (the central London terminus for HS1) was as visionary as it was controversial. At the core of this new vision were two things:
That St Pancras International could become a destination in its own right. That is, that with the right retail mix, the right events programme, the right communications strategy, the right brand, the right management and with the right people working there St P could attract people to its facilities who have no intention of getting on a train.
That St P could be the centrepiece and catalyst that promoted a new cultural quarter of London
Both these things have come to be a reality with results that even our most optimistic planning could not have predicted. Today something like one third of those people shopping, eating, meeting and enjoying themselves at St P are not catching a train. Moreover, St P lies at the heart of King’s Cross Central, perhaps (and certainly arguably) the most vibrant, creative, attractive and productive part of north London. Google’s HQ, University of the Arts, theatres, Granary Square, new walkways, excellent restaurants, well designed public realm, green space, art and community facilities (never mind the housing) among many, many other aspects of the area all contribute to a most fabulous new district. Again, the reality has outshone even our most optimistic future gazing from back in the day.
I am particularly pleased to see this model of rail-led regeneration and revitalisation being replicated at King’s Cross, the magnificent Birmingham New Street and equally importantly at smaller stations on London’s Overground, Crossrail and elsewhere up and down the national network. Rail? That stuffy old one-track-thinking industry? At the vanguard of this revolution?
Heaven forbid!
Well, we’ve been bold - we’ve not been afraid to raise the bar to levels others will tell us are unattainable.
But most importantly of all we’ve trusted ourselves to deliver.
 And deliver we have.

Amazing public art programme to project manage. great to work with Kerry and the AJ Wells team. So many different artworks created by Kerry.
