End of year reflection: 2020 edition
Not gonna make a monthly recap because a lot and not much have happened. Weird, but that what 2020 is to me: Weird. I’ll try to write them based on some milestones.
1. M.Sc.
2020 is my final year as a master’s student. The first half of 2020 is mostly filled with my trying to finish writing and analyzing data and reading a buttload of papers. The thesis itself was very special to me because it was about a program that combines two seemingly unrelated activity of an established firm: strategic CSR and capability development. I really liked what I wrote. And to be honest I was a little disappointed that it was awarded with an 8, but it was likely due to the 9 and 10 and 8.5s that were received by my brilliant friends. It might sound like a lame ass rant, but an 8 didn’t even make the cuts to some PhD positions.
Asked Zenlin if she’d be willing to co-author a paper from my MSc thesis and she said yes, and my second supervisor also agreed to participate. I sent the first draft in mid-August but Zenlin has just read it in the second week of December and said that she’ll start adding revisions in 2021. It has been a very hard and weird year, and it is tiring for everybody. I’m not complaining.
2. Applying for jobs and PhDs
I applied to two Ph.D positions, one at Universiteit Utrecht and the other one at Copenhagen Business School. I didn’t even pass the CV screening stage and each of the position was applied by more than 200 people. But I got Zenlin to review my application documents so they’d be ready for future alterations when I start applying again. I applied to maybe 6-7 jobs in the Netherlands, but heard nothing back. A recruiter called me by phone and I tried to speak in baby Dutch but anyway they were looking for people with quantitative skills so the job was not for me. Plus they require B2 Dutch. A lot of positions that I can apply to (based on my background) require at least a B2.
3. On finding jobs
I have a lot of fears. Especially when I get back to this phase where I’ll have to knock on doors, waiting for one of them to open. I hate rejections and having to wait for them. I am not confident with my skillset - I am afraid of being exposed as someone incompetent even before I start applying for jobs. I have an innate impostor syndrome, and at times I don’t even believe that I would excel at things. Again, I have this personal expectation of my being able to do this and that, working with softwares other than Microsoft Office and having a deep understanding of statistical tools but I am still far from being that person. I did finish two Udemy courses, then signed up for like ~10 free Coursera courses but didn’t finish any of them.
Was contacted by a person from my old office, and thanks to my being so unsure about what to do after graduation plus my general lack of confidence, and this weird feeling of having to give something back to the place that gave me the narratives I needed to receive the 2-year full ride scholarships, I decided to say yes when they asked for me to come back. I am seriously doubting that decision, like, right now. Like a fish that has swam to many places then came back to this small glass bowl. But this fish is afraid of the ocean. Nevertheless, I have now applied to a few job openings and is hoping to get a real job. I figure that one possible remedy to my impostor syndrome would be this: being accepted for a job. I need that external validation.
4. Traveling across NL
My Museumkaart hasn’t expired, and I subscribed for Weekend Vrij for free train rides during the weekend. Went to lots of cities in the Netherlands and see museum exhibitions. I was fortunate that there’s this small group of people that arrange one trips after another so I was able to just join them. I said that all European cities are alike, but actually after I went around NL, I can’t really say that. Each city does have a distinct vibe to it. I particulary like Breda. And Naarden.
I also went on this mission to go see all museum exhibitions that is related to Indonesia. Will try to write a dedicated post on that. I first went to Wereldmuseum, Rotterdam. Then National Maritime Museum and Verzetsmuseum in Amsterdam. Should’ve went to see Bronbeek Museum, a museum in Arnhem that is dedicated to the KNIL, but due to Covid-19, the museum is closed at least until February 2021.
5. Webtoons and K Drama
They are addictive. Spent a lot time and money for Line coins that I had to delete the app so I can reset and control myself. The two are probably what kept most of the world population sane during this pandemic. Some k-dramas I loved: Hospital Playlist, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (I know it’s an old one but I’ve just watched it this year), Crash Landing On You, Startup, Dinner Mate, Mr. Queen (ongoing), and of course: True Beauty!
Super sad that Yumi Cell has come to an end. I learned a lot from her, and her brain cells. It makes more sense to me compared to Inside and Out where only four basic emotions are in charge of Riley’s behaviour and thought process. Yumi has infinite amount of brain cells. And they’re too damn adorable. Plus it’s about an adult woman trying to find the love of her life so of course I relate so much with Yumi.
6. Back in Indonesia, for good
I went back to Indonesia on the last week of September 2020. Simply because I didn’t actually have an ambition to be an expatriate. And my residence permit is expiring plus I was living on my savings account without any income. It’s Covid-time and I don’t really have much to do beside being crammed at home. And I want to celebrate my birthday at home. Went back to work at my old office. Same old, same old. It’s nice to come and see my old colleagues, to catch up on some issues, and to actually see the plans progresses into real things. But, then again, I know that this shouldn’t be my final post. I need to learn a lot of things and explore and refine myself.
7. On being in a relationship
2020 is a year where I am entirely in a relationship. That’s a first to me. Flew over a few times to see each other. Cancelled a trip to Italy in April due to, what else other than Covid-19? Still hasn’t receive the refunds up until now. Some adjustments that naturally comes with new relationships. Arguments. Being very happy and in love, then pissed and not quite fancying the other person. Been putting strain after strain to the relationship, and things haven’t been going the way they were planned and all in all, this has been a weird, rough year.
Some bottled up feelings, that bursted open two days ago. But now I’m relieved. I have said what I need to say, no stones unturned. Que sera sera. Probably shouldn’t have internalized that many School of Life videos for my own sake.
8. On trying to be consistent
I have a problem with being consistent, as you might conclude from my unfinished courses. But I am glad to say that I am now on a 90-day streak on my Dutch Duolingo, on the 13th out of 14 consecutive days of Chloe Ting’s 14 days challenge, and I have just finished another 30-day challenge on a series about people and how they navigate through intricate relationships. Will try to extend the motivation next year to study GRE and really finish some courses and acquire some other skills. Ik blijf werken aan mijn nederlands. Who knows if I get to go back there? I’d love to do that.
That’s that.

My UGREEN USB Bluetooth Adapter Review (w/ my Paper Dolls) - Part 3 [Jan 14, 2021]
Here’s my part 3 of my UGREEN USB Bluetooth Adapter for my Windows PC.📶🖥️😊
In this part, I have a recorded video (from my Honor 8C phone 📲) to tested out how it works with my almost 3 year old Awei Y200 Bluetooth Speaker and without installing a CSR Harmony V2.0 from the included mini CD.❌💿
BTW: The original size of my recorded video was 225MB. So I can’t upload the original size, despite the limitations of upload video size from tumblr. So once again I decided to use cloudconvert.com [CLICK ME!] in order to reduce the size ⬇️🎞️. Even though the details might be diminish compare to the original but at least you and I could see the item(s) what you and I see.
*But before that, I want YOU… Yes you, which you’re reading my description. I want you to watch my recorded video first 📹📲 (as a observation) before you read the rest of my reaction experience. Hope you’re watching…
So without further ado, let’s get started:
My Experience: • (Now as you already done watching video.) I’m attempt to connect my UGREEN USB Bluetooth Adapter through my Windows 10 PC, and once that I can see a solid white light appears from the adapter ⚪. I checked on the screen and I noticed it didn’t see the "new device” from the notifications section, I only see the Bluetooth icon on the windows 10 taskbar. But before I open the Bluetooth window task I need to turn on my Awei Y200 Bluetooth speaker first 📻. So now I opened the Bluetooth window task, and you can see I noticed the named “dongle” for the UGREEN USB Bluetooth Adapter. Also that icon should be more fitting than the headset/headphone icon, but then again it’s supports wireless audio devices after all. Anyways my Awei Bluetooth Speaker was already on, so I’m proceed to click the “Add Bluetooth or other device”➕; where I can find or rather scan the brand specific wireless speaker, until it pops up the device and click to connect. • So now my Awei Bluetooth Speaker is successfully connected through my UGREEN Bluetooth Adapter from my Windows 10 PC 📻📶🖥️, and I noticed that the name of the brand and model appears 🔊; not to mention the battery rate status 🔋 appears on the audio connect section, which is so cool.😁 I even try to compare with the old Genius brand speakers and it seems quite the same sound quality.🙂
Overall: • This is just the beginning of testing out my UGREEN USB Bluetooth Adapter with my Awei Y200 Bluetooth Speaker, and hopefully I will tested out other devices as well very soon. • Anyways, I have to say that this is okay without installing the CSR Harmony V2.0 either from the included mini CD or download from the UGREEN support website, despite that it has “Plug ‘n Play” feature; like most other Bluetooth adapter brands do. Although I could install that software because it has extra features but will see in the upcoming part.🤔
Nonetheless, I have another recorded video though as a half part. As well as my extended experience on using my UGREEN Bluetooth adapter connecting my Awei Bluetooth speaker. So if you want to see my next one then please [CLICK ME!].
Well, that’s all for now. If you want to see related posts about that, I’ll provide some links down below.↓😉
UGREEN USB Bluetooth Adapter: • Unopened parcel [Nov 9, 2020] • Revealing item (Recorded Video) [Nov 9, 2020] • Part 1 [Dec 5, 2020] • Part 2 [Dec 15, 2020]

After that you ought to leave the conference, if you're not using Skype to meet with a person.
