I have gone through a bunch lol.

I started trying to pirate Cubase5 without realizing what I was doing was piracy, and I couldn't figure out how to get it working lol. I eventually just gave up.

Eventually I started my piano channel and wanted midi recording so I asked my friend. He recommended LMMS, but I didn't like the UX, so I looked for others on my own.

Then I found and switched to FL Studio. I used it for a while, but the free version doesn't allow you to save projects so I only ever recorded midi on it.

Eventually my laptop started to deteriorate to the point it was unusable so I grabbed a super old laptop from my mom's boyfriend and put Linux on it. FL Studio didn't have a Linux version so I had to look for new free DAWs with midi recording that ran on Linux. Ardour had glowing reviews everywhere I looked so I grabbed that and it was great. Learning how to use that is what prompted YouTube to spam me with music composition stuff, and that's when I got some VSTs and started to experiment with stuff.

I really like Ardour, but it has a few things that bother me, so I recently looked up DAWs for windows (since I have a new laptop now) and found a bunch.

I tried to get Cakewalk because people said it was the best free one by far, but I couldn't get the version everyone used. I had asked on a reddit post a while back for suggestions and somebody mentioned Reaper so I looked into that.

I had heard of Reaper before but I knew it was paid like FL Studio so I had avoided it, but apparently it is "paid" in the same way WinRAR is paid so I got it a couple weeks ago. I messed around a bit and I'm liking it so far. The problems I had with Ardour are not present in Reaper so that's a huge plus, and my VSTs all work (unlike Cakewalk Next or whatever that had weird issues).

I'm liking Reaper so far but I'm still looking around so I'll probably check out Ableton at some point.

Did I know already you were a music person and just forgort or is this news to me?

I mention music occasionally, but I don't know if I have any of my own music actually saved (I usually just mess around in Ardour and then close without saving). I play piano covers of video game and anime OST on my YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/channel/UCV-bwkwJ2OJU2EFqfxHHKHQ), but it's mostly just a hobby thing and I'm not very good.

I've been playing piano since I was a kid (maybe 8-12ish? I don't know exactly when but I was young), but I've had so many different piano teachers and VERY big gaps between them (like years lol), so I had to start from scratch every time. I can read sheet music but not very well and I don't know much about music theory beyond the basic stuff (like what a scale is and inversions).

Since it's just a hobby I kinda got frustrated learning from sheets since I never practiced them enough. Now I just play from piano roll videos most of the time. I usually link the video I use in the description of my videos on YouTube.

Recently YouTube has been really pushing music composition videos on me since I was looking into a new DAW for recording midi for my piano videos. I was using Ardour for a while but I just got the free version of Reaper and might mess around in that a bit at some point.

I really want to improve, but it's too much for me at the moment. Once I get my electives finished I think I might do a music minor and actually learn more music theory (since random YouTube videos are a bit tough to learn from lol), but that's dependent on how my course schedule will end up looking.

So in short I like music, and I have a ton of fun with it, but in terms of original music I've not made anything worth listening to lol. I'm much better at my piano covers (which are still not that great, but I have fun with them, and they're good enough I feel like others might enjoy seeing them).

Edit: if you really want I can search through my external hard drive to see if I've got anything saved but keep your expectations low (and that's if there's even anything there)
