“We do bones, motherfucker” is a fantastic moment don’t get me wrong but it hasn’t haunted my psyche nearly as hard as, just a few pages later, “Did you behold me, Griddle?”

Nona the Ninth
Author: Tamsyn Muir
Book: 3/4
Genre: sci-fi, fantasy
Summary: Nona wakes up in someone else’s body on an unknown planet, surround by a city that is falling apart. The Blood of Eden forces take control and wait for call from the Emperor Undying, while Nona fears she may have to give her body back and leave her normal life with her family.
Review: Nona the Ninth was like a breath of fresh air after reading Harrow the Ninth. This book was funny, unique, mysterious, and well-structured. I loved how the plot evolved, knowing that one loose end of the story was going to unravel as the book went on. My only critique was the lack of pacing in this book; like Gideon the Ninth, there were waves of slow, boring parts of the story with intriguing, exciting parts of the book to follow. I understand that not every plot is a perpetual climb, but the pacing in Muir’s writing seems to be lacking. Otherwise, this book kept me invested, despite the slow sections. Nona the Ninth is so unique in comparison to Gideon and Harrow, that I couldn’t help but let my curiosity guide me through each page turn. I always had questions while reading, like “who is Nona? Where did she come from?” “Why are there chapters about the Emperor’s past?” Speaking of which, I liked the addition of John’s past and how he told his story. The hidden names left some mild confusion at first, but the set-up and slow reveal struck at my urge to know more, keeping me intrigued. I loved the dichotomy of Nona’s personality and this necromantic/apocalyptic universe. Nona is so funny, sweet, quirky and innocent, which makes her seem like a bright light in a world riddled with darkness and death. I am so excited for Alecto the Ninth to be released and to see all Hell break loose. I would recommend this series to anyone interested in the science-fiction or fantasy genre, funny characters and dialogue, or a wild mystery.
Rating: 4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

some drawings i did of gideon from the locked tomb series. tonight, i will see if i can really get through three books in three days (i already kinda know i can but i did hope to not do it while i have school because i do believe that my education is a tiny bit important (this is why i have not watched season two of arcane and am instead slowly being cooked and simmered above a fire that is people talking about it. this is not a good comparison.)).

Okay, because I’ve seen a couple floating around, and I just made it for my partner who’s reading them for the first time + I know a good few of you follow me for tlt stuff: Here is The Recommended Reading Order for The Locked Tomb
1. Gideon the Ninth
2. The glossary and “a little explanation of the naming system” from the end of the GtN
3. “A sermon on cavaliers and necromancers” and “cohort intelligence files” also from the GtN paperback
4. The Mysterious Study of Doctor Sex, which you can read for free here:
https://reactormag.com/the-mysterious-study-of-dr-sex-tamsyn-muir//
5. Harrow the Ninth
6. The HtN glossary and the “Blood of Eden Memorandum For Record” which is included in the Harrow paperback
7. (Here’s where you face a choice, because after Harrow, you can either
A) go back and reread Gideon the Ninth, which I highly recommend, or
B) read “As Yet Unsent” from the Harrow paperback if you just want to keep going.) if you do A, just do B afterwards
8. Nona the Ninth
9. “The Unwanted Guest” from the Nona paperback
(Note: This assumes the reader has the current US paperback copies, but if you are listening to the audiobooks [which I highly recommend]/have a different edition, [I know, for example, that libraries prefer to generally have hardcovers when they’re available] this is a series where I think owning/reading multiple formats is worth it, but you can probably find most of the supplemental materials online, and if worst comes to, most of the bonus material is short enough that you could probably read it while in the bookstore pretending to think about buying the book. And, if you just want to read the novels/don’t care that much and just want to see where this goes, you can always just read the mainline books and come back later, but that’s not really the point of a full reading order.)
