it had became an understanding that you were to stay quiet when barry was dealing in the house. preferably in your room, but if you were around it, you weren’t allowed to say a word.

this rule had been instilled in you since you were in middle school. it was annoying, to say the least. you’d always wanted to help, at least a bit. you had basically learned the way the whole interaction was supposed to go, just from watching your brother.

the customer would get to the house, usually at night, come inside, pay, get their drugs, then leave quietly. it had become an art form to barry— and a source of entertainment to you.

however, tonight there was a customer staying in the house for a lot longer then usual. you knew he wasn’t a pogue, he didnt look nor act like one. he must be a kook. you could tell he was a bit coked out too. you became really good at figuring that stuff out after a while.

you didn’t talk to him, simply sat on the opposite end of the couch while him and barry conversed. you stayed with your knees tucked to your chest, observing. barry had a few customers come in and out, before getting a call.

you couldn’t quite hear what your brother was saying exactly, but you made out enough to know that his supplier was gonna be coming. you sighed to yourself, another thing barry wouldn’t let you participate in.

the supplier showed up after a near 20 minute wait, barry heading for the door. you expected the kook boy to follow him, but he stayed still in his place on the couch. barry seemed too focused to tell him to come with, too.

the room fell into an uncomfortable silence after that. that was, until the boy got up from his seat, moving across the couch to sit directly next to you. all while staying silent. you tensed a bit, confused and nervous. before he spoke, “what’s your name?” you looked at him unsure, “why?”

“just wanna know.” you rolled your eyes, facing away forward again. away from his gaze. “what’s yours?” he laughed, at your reverse psychology attempt. “rafe. cameron.” you knew that last name. sarah cameron. the girl from school. must be his sister, you thought to yourself.

“okay.” you spoke, simply. he looked at you, you felt his stare. “so, barry doesn’t let you help him deal at all?” you shook your head, humming out a no. “shame. he let you do anything? doesnt really seem like it.” you smiled a bit at his observation, speaking. “no, not really.” he nodded, analyzing your words.

“he ever let you go to a party before?” you furrowed your brows. how did he knew that you had been begging your brother to let you go to a party for years? “no. he hasn’t.” he laughed, amused at the answers you gave him.

“so, guessing you never been with a boy before either, huh?” you creased your brows yet again, confused on what he meant by his statement. “in what way?” rafe smiled, before speaking bluntly again. “you ever been fucked before?” you flinched at his harsh choice of words, before quickly shaking your head.

“what? no. why are you asking that?” you spoke, now looking at him as if he was fucking crazy. but he was just glad you were looking at him. he wanted to see your face. the face you kept so well hidden from the world. “relax, ‘m just curious.”

you looked annoyed, tense. but he didn’t mind. he was happy to get a couple words conversation out of you. “you shouldn’t even be talking to me, let alone asking that. barry would fucking kill you.” you told him. he laughed, yet again. “barrys like a brother to me. you can talk to one guy. what he doesnt know wont hurt him.”

you bit your cheek, before speaking. “and what if i did tell him?” he stayed silent for a moment, pondering the question. “then he would have to get over it.” you laughed, subtly. you didnt wanna boost the kook boys ego too much.

it fell silent again, but more comfortable this time. not fully, but almost there. the boy stood up again, speaking. “i’m heading out.” you nodded, looking up at him. he headed towards the door, before stopping and turning around.!

he gave you, and your body a once over before speaking again. “your tits look good in that.” your eyes quickly widened, narrowing in on him. “you’re a fucking weirdo.” you spoke. he laughed, turning back around and heading out the door.

you were still fucking astonished that he said that to you. that was the first time you ever even heard a boy think of you like that. but a strange part of you didn’t hate it.

you should’ve told barry, you really should have. but you couldn’t bring yourself to do it. not with the risk that came with it, you not being able to see that blonde kook boy again.

Gaz glances over his shoulder, sniffs, then turns back with a cynical curl to his lip. Lifting his pint glass, he slants a knowing look at his fellow sergeant. "He's lost the bloody plot, if ya ask me. Hooks up with every bird he gets his hands on, now." He shakes his head. "'S bloody mental, mate. What the hell is he thinkin'?"

Soap grunts, mouth twisting in disgust as he focuses on his lieutenant and the cackling drunk bird splayed across his lap. "Canna say. Dinnae ken wha's gotten into 'im. Feckin' mad, lettin' a bonnie, good lass go t'chase after sloppy-drunk tarts like tha' one."

"You lads ready for another round?"

Both men flinch at the sound of your voice and glance up at you with guilty expressions. They know you had to have heard what they were saying. Gaz drops his gaze as he nods and pushes his glass across the bar, while Soap tilts his head to study you. You meet his searching blue eyes while you refill Gaz's pint, knowing what's coming. You breathe out a tired sigh.

"What's the matter, Johnny?"

His brows pinch together in a perturbed frown. "Does it no' bother yeh, 'im flauntin' those mingin' slags right in yer face?"

"Jesus, Soap!" Gaz hisses, elbowing him. "Shut ya bloody gob." He then turns his attention back to you, offering an apologetic smile. "Sorry, luv. He's got no filter when he drinks too much."

"Oi! I dinnae need yeh t'make excuses fer meh," Soap fusses, still scowling when he looks back to you. "'M sorry, hen. Dinnae mean t'upset yeh. Jus' think it's no' right, 'im scrapin' yeh off the way 'e did, then comin' in 'ere where yeh work, messin' about with other birds, like 'e does. 'S disrespectful."

Your eyes drift to Ghost, grimacing at the way the woman in his lap is pawing at him, before dropping your eyes to glare at the bar top. "It doesn't matter," you mutter, wiping down the bar with more force than is necessary. "We're over, so he can do what he wants with whoever he wants. I think him breaking things off between us was probably for the best, don't you?"

The two sergeants exchange a look.

Soap huffs and slumps on his bar stool, mumbling into his pint, "Yeh're too good fer 'im, anyway." He knocks the last of his stout back with an angry sneer.

Gaz nods in agreement, his eyes sympathetic when he adds, "Ya can do better, luv. Deserve someone who'll treat ya right."

You try to smile, but it's fake, brittle. "Seriously, it's alright. I'm over it. Really."

You can tell that neither of them believes you.

Your call for last orders goes out a few minutes later, and the few customers left in the pub begin to drift towards the door. Gaz and Soap are settling up their tabs when Ghost steps up behind them, the giggling drunk bird tucked under his arm. His dark eyes slide over you, like you're not even there.

"'M headin' out, lads. I'll see the two'uh ya back at base. Gonna take 'er 'ome," he tells the sergeants, nodding down at the bleary-eyed bird glued to his side.

Gaz give a curt nod, avoiding eye contact. Soap makes a scoffing noise in the back of his throat. "Aye. Jus' keep rubbin' 'er nose in it," he mutters, then sniffs, shaking his head. "Steamin' Jaysus."

Ghost tenses, eyes narrowing over his face mask. "Ya gotta problem, sergeant?"

Just as Soap's mouth opens to reply, you clear your throat, breaking the tense moment. "How 'bout a bag of crisps to soak up all that alcohol, Johnny? My treat."

His head swivels around to look at you, the scowl slowly melting off his face when he sees your worried expression. He blows out a breath. "Aye. Thanks, bon." He side-eyes Ghost, then looks away. "See ya later, LT," he mumbles.

The drunk bird makes a whining noise, tugging at Ghost's jacket. "C'mon, luv. Leh's gooo. 'M ready t'get home." She then gives him a drunken, lewd grin, pressing up against him. "Ya can help me get these tights off, yeah?" she whispers to him, waggling her eyebrows.

Ghost grunts a laugh, seemingly amused. "Cheeky muppet. Olright. Let's get outta here."

You busy yourself with wiping down the bar as Ghost leads the tottering woman out the door, then toss your towel down once he's gone. Snagging two bags of crisps for the sergeants, you hand one to each of them.

"Here ya go," you murmur. "Need me to call a taxi for ya?"

"No thanks, luv," Gaz replies softly, sliding off his stool. "I already ordered us an Uber. Let's go, Soap."

Soap stands, his crisps clutched in his hand. He's scowling, shaking his head. "'E's a bloody eejit," he mutters.

You finally wave goodbye to the two sergeants, locking up behind them once you usher them out the door. Blowing out a tired breath, you lean back against it and stare down at your trainers.

"God, I'm glad this night is over," you mumble to yourself, then heave another sigh before heading back to the bar, ready to close up for the night and get out of there.

The drive home is short, just a couple blocks away, but it still gives you too much time to think. This is by far the worst break-up you've ever been through. None of your work mates or friends can seem to go a day without mentioning it. Even worse, Simon's mates won't let it go, either.

You appreciate their support, but seriously wish that Soap and Gaz would stop bringing Simon up, altogether. It's hard enough watching the big lug flirting with birds right under your nose. You don't need Soap pointing it out to you, or Gaz giving you those sad, pitying looks all night.

You try to shake off your negative thoughts as you park and walk to your flat. It's sweet that the lads are trying to be there for you, but you hope that they'll just let it go soon. Maybe you should just tell them you're seeing someone else. It might help put their minds at ease, get them to back off a little bit.

Once inside your flat, you toe off your trainers and turn on the lights, then pad into the kitchen. Putting some leftovers in the microwave, you shuffle off to take a quick shower while it's heating, hoping the hot water will soothe away some of your stress.

As you're toweling off, you hear your front door open and then close. Hurrying to get dressed, you open the bathroom door, the smell of yesterday's shepherd's pie hitting your nose. You hear the clatter of plates and utensils coming from the kitchen as you pace down the short hallway and peek around the corner. You stop when you reach the doorway, leaning your shoulder against the jamb and crossing your arms over your chest.

"Took you awhile to get here. Thought you might've decided to stay the night with that bird, after all."

Simon sets the leftover shepherd's pie he just took out of the microwave on the table, smirking. Tossing down the potholders, he comes to you, his big arms wrapping around your body to pull you close before his head dips to give you a kiss.

"Took forever t'get 'er outta the bloody truck an' into 'er flat. 'Ad t'fight 'er off'uh me the whole way there, too, the handsy git." He rumbles out a low chuckle. "She was right pissed when I left without helpin' 'er outta those tights."

You huff, cutting him a snarky look. "Yeah, I bet." You frown, sliding your hands down his chest. "I wish we didn't have to do this, Si. I don't like seeing other women all over my man, and I hate lying to everyone, especially Johnny and Kyle."

He sighs, lifting a hand to cradle your face. "I know, sweet'art, but it won't be f'much longer. Cap says Nik's almost got all of our documents an' passports in order. When it's time, we'll loop Gaz an' Johnny in. My next mission out, Ghost will be reported KIA, an' once he's laid t'rest, it'll finally be over. No more sneakin' around, no more lyin'. We'll 'ave new identities, a new life." He hugs you tighter. "An' I can finally provide my missus wiff a proper 'ome."

"Si..."

His eyes go lazy and warm as he slides his hand down to cover your belly. "Gotta 'ave a proper 'ome, love. 'S why we're doin' this. Wanna be free an' clear a'fore the li'l nipper gets 'ere. Yeah?"

You gaze up into your husband's eyes, a hopeful smile spreading across your face. You plant a kiss on his smirking lips and nod.

"Yeah."

Summary: It's Yuuken's First Day back to class after his accident, his friends are eager to see him but are they prepared to see him once again?

Mozus Trein spoke in his nonchalant voice as he wrote along the board with chalk as he taught his class; the sounds of pens against paper as the students took their notes for future assignments or upcoming tests. Lucius purred as his master held him close to his chest while watching the students with uninterested golden eyes; uninterested but focused eyes that scanned the classroom to make sure there wasn't anyone sleeping, he did oh so love swatting the heads of students who weren't paying attention or sleeping in class. When he didn't see any slackers, he lowered his eyes to take a small cap nap, that was when a certain rule-breaker of Heartslabyul exhaled and ran a hand through his ginger hair before looking at his blue-haired cohort.

"I never knew class would be this boring with Yuuken and Grim around." Ace groaned as he looked over to Deuce.

"Considering that Yuuken holds all the brain cells between the 4 of us, Grim included, it's kinda understandable why you want him around. I miss him too; class is not the same without him and Grim around." Deuce said as he looked over at the empty seat beside him that Yuuken normally occupied.

"He's supposed to come back today, isn't he? I overheard Professor Crewel telling Professor Trein that Yuuken was going to be attending class...but then he started talking about Trein's Grandson..." Ace said, causing Deuce to look at him with confusion dancing in his eyes.

"Professor Trein has a Grandson? I didn't know that." Deuce said

"Yeah, Professor Crewel was telling him to forgive his grandson for being late. I wonder what he was talking about." Ace said with a raised eyebrow while scratching the side of his head with the end of his Magic Pen. Deuce opened his mouth to speak when the door opened and a familiar voice rang out.

"Forgive me for being late! I got slightly lost in the halls after being discharged and dismissed."

Yuuken! He had returned!

Ace and Deuce turned their heads to see their friend's face for the first time in a week but their eyes widened upon falling upon Yuuken's Visage, something was very wrong; starting with his clothes.

Yuuken wasn't wearing the school uniform he arrived at Night Raven College with, nor was he even wearing a Night Raven Uniform. The Prefect of Ramshackle was dressed in a custom-made designer suit that mirrored that of Divus Crewel; from the black and white vest, the black dress shirt underneath, and the red tie around his neck and tucked away under his collar. He wore black dress pants with a black belt and black shoes; he was even wearing red gloves! All he was missing was the massive fur coat and pointer stick with a collar attached to the end.

Yuuken started walking down the stairs to reach Trein's Desk when Ace and Deuce made another shocking discovery: Yuuken's once coal hair was now tainted with white - The Traditional Crewel Family Trademark, the only difference to Divus' was that the color positions were reversed. Yuuken's top was black while his sides and back were dyed white. He looked like a spawn of Crewel!

"I hope you have a decent reason for being late to my class on your first day back since your accident, Yuuken." Professor Trein said in a stern voice while looking at Yuuken with a stoic face; however...why did he call Yuuken so casually? Yuuken looked like a scolded puppy before reaching to the satchel around his shoulder and pulling out a piece of paper, handing it to the professor.

"Please, forgive me, Grandfather; I didn't mean to be late but Father wanted to make sure I remembered critical things for the upcoming tests." Yuuken said, causing everyone's jaws to drop at what Yuuken just said. Trein looked at the paper before exhaling and handing it back to Yuuken before stroking Lucius' fur.

"I shall forgive you this time since you are recovering from serious injury and your Father asked me to be lenient with you upon returning, however, do not make a habit of this, Grandson. Am I clear?" Trein asked.

"Your words are clear s crystal, Grandfather. Once again, I am sorry." Yuuken said as he bowed his head in respect to Trein, causing the older man to exhale and pet the top of Yuuken's Head.

"You are forgiven, Grandson; now, take your seat and start taking notes. They are critical for the upcoming exams." Trein said. The Prefect of Ramshackle nodded before petting Lucius between his ears, causing the cat to purr before Yuuken withdrew his hand and walked up the stairs to his usual seat; he didn't even say hello to Ace and Deuce, just pulled out his notebook and started copying the notes on the board and new notes that Trein started writing again. The shock of the class slowly wore off and everyone started taking notes once again, except for Deuce and Ace, who just stared at the Prefect for the remainder of the class.

When the bell rang, Yuuken gathered his notebook and placed it in his satchel before walking away before being stopped by someone calling his name; he turned to see Ace and Deuce standing behind him.

"Yes? Is there something I can help you with?" Yuuken asked.

"Yuuken, what the heck is going on with you?!" Ace asked.

"I beg your pardon?" Yuuken asked with a raised eyebrow.

"What Ace means to say is that you are acting rather strange. You are dressed like Professor Crewel, you called Professor Trein Grandfather, and...where is Grim?" Deuce asked.

"Grim is currently with my father, he needed some help with getting things in order for Ramshackle to have repairs done to it and Grim wanted to go with him. I'm not used to not having him with me but I can understand he needs a break sometimes too." Yuuken smiled.

"Your Father? Who is your father?" Ace asked.

"What are you talking about, Ace? You know that my Father is Divus Crewel. You've been one of my closest friends along with Deuce since I arrived here and you don't even remember my father's name?" Yuuken said but just caused Ace and Deuce to shout in unison.

"WHAT?!"

"Please, do not yell. You will cause me to get a headache." Yuuken said.

Yarn Log - Horseshoe Bookmark

Background & Thoughts

I started this bookmark wayyyy back around the time when I had already started The Blanket™ (Post incoming within the week probably). I had wanted a smaller project that I could use light weight yarn (I think it’s sport weight but I can’t remember) and it just so happened that at the time I was going through some cookbooks to pick out recipes that I could make, and a custom bookmark seemed like a fun thing to add to that process. Of course, I naturally fell off of going through the cookbooks and never actually made anything 💀

Technically, this pattern is not particularly difficult. The most complicated maneuver is an sl1-k2tog-psso, which sounded insane at the skill level I was at, but a quick YouTube search clarified it pretty easily. It was helpful also to do in preparation for the second half of The Blanket™, which had a lot of k2tog’s in it.

HOWEVER, I kind of hated this project and don’t like how it turned out lol. Not only did I choose to use that really light weight yarn, but I also chose a very dark blue color (the pictures look brighter bc they’re well lit, but while working on it, the color might as well have just been near black). This made it extremely difficult to count stitches, to orient myself within my current progress, and to catch mistakes to undo. There are several mistakes in this that I just kind of gave up on going back to fix, because I preferred it to be done rather than perfect:

I messed up the border stitch on one side at some point. It’s not so noticeable, since the yarn is dark and the mistake is so small, but it still irks me since I know it’s there. I have a slightly different technique about the first stitch of each row that I like how it looks (more details when I post about The Blanket™) so it ruins the vibe a bit.

Hilariously, I seem to have gotten the sides reversed halfway through the bookmark, so the horseshoe pattern for the rest of it is just an ugly purl-ey mess that should have been on the other side. Still not actually a huuuge deal since I don’t care about this piece so much, but it’s honestly funny lol.

There’s this random loop poking out. Idk if I accidentally dropped it or something, but it’s just sort of there lol. Luckily I can just sort of tuck it into the hole right there from yo’ing, so it hopefully won’t get snagged and make stuff fall apart.

I think the top of the bookmark is very slightly narrower than the bottom. Idk if this was from pinning it wrong during the blocking process yesterday, or if it was a yarn tension issue. Regardless, it too is like. A couple millimeters at most, so for this project it’s also whatever.

There are certainly other issues with this, but analyzing it even under a bright light is so annoying, I’m not gonna dig deeper into it. The above are just the most obvious issues that I can notice.

I actually finished this bookmark ages ago and it’s just been sitting in my project bag, waiting to be blocked. Since I ended up doing some small warmup crochet projects (posts also incoming!), I blocked them all together, which is why this is FINALLY done.

So in terms of lessons learned:

I hate working with light weight yarn and will not be doing so anytime soon

I hate working with dark colored yarn and will not be doing so anytime soon

That’s basically it. I just don’t want to do something like this again in the nearish future lol

Super rambley levelmaker commentary and other wacky stuff below the cut

So this was originally going to be a story driven level. I some dialogue planned but i didn't like how it sounded and no one else was particularly interested in helping me write

The general story was as following: Cole would be telling Hailey (who's doing an interview for school) about a friend of his that he met on an old music production forum he frequented when he was younger. They were this niche internet microcelebrity called ballfart2001. They became friends, and generally just hung out and whatnot. At some point though, Cole would do some shit that pissed ballfart off, and they stopped talking to each other. At the end, there was originally going to be rank text, being a message that ballfart sent to Cole before the messageboard went down. If you did well, it would be the two exchanging discords so they could keep in contact, and if you did poorly, it would be ballfart telling Cole off, or even blocking him.

Now for what's actually in the level, starting with ballfart themself.

I worked hard ballfart's custom character (raw sprites below). Their neutral and missed expression are based on (new) Cole's neutral and barely sprites. Most of the custom methods I used for this (kaleidoscope roll, offset, repeat, symmetry, and color iirc) were released relatively recently (aside from the colors, that method has existed for ages). IN FACT, this level was created BEFORE those custom methods were released, I added kaleidoscope specifically so I could use them (because they're awesome)

Anyways the rest of the vfx yeah fuck. The custom hitstrip was added because I thought it looked cool. ditto... most of it really.

Now, for the gameplay. Act 5 had recently released, this song was unveiled to the rdsrt levelmakers as a priority song, and while listening to it, I noticed that sometimes there would be a second snare, but earlier then the regular snare. And I thought "oh dope kinda like subdivision beats. but like reverse". (Normal subdivision beats require you to hit after the snare). That's where the whole gimmick came from, and the rest of the charting sorta stemmed from trying to compliment that and fit the song as best as possible.

FINALLY, we can get to the notorious ballfart incident.

So for clarity, since I removed the dialogue, no one would normally know that that character is named "ballfart" unless they heard it from me or went inside the level folder.
