DIY LoZ Sheikah Slate

Thought it's about time I shared the birthday gift I made for my bestie @tsukinoshinjiu! It's a custom Sheikah Slate! So I'm gonna share how I made it... (finished images at the bottom!)

First I started by looking at in-game references for it and getting a general feel of what it looks like, what pieces I'd need, and what the general shape would be like. I wanted it to be a special box of sorts, so they could hide little treasures or letters...

After getting the general feel of the colors and shapes I'd need as well as what would be sunken and what would pop out, I looked for some measurements I could base myself off of. Luckily I found a Reddit post of someone who'd already done the hard work for me.

I tweaked the sizes slightly (namely putting them in a measurement system I could actually understand) then opened up SketchUp to model it out and simulate my rough idea.

I really wanted to stay true to the rounded corners, so I went for a layered technique, using 3 mm wooden slates.

So I created a "base" piece, a "body" piece, and a "lid" piece. In the end, it ended up being 5 body pieces, 1 base, and 1 lid. (And no, I didn't have access to 6 mm wood, otherwise, I'd simply done 2 6mm pieces for the body instead) In total, the depth was roughly 2.2 cm

Once that was ready, I laid out a simple graphic for my cutter. In it you can see the measurements:

Height: 25,33 cm (~10 in.)

Width: 15,33 cm (6 in.)

Depth: 2.2 cm (0.8 in.)

(yes I named it 6mm, I mistyped dw about it) Once that was done, I looked at the front again and opened up Illustrator to make the vector path for the cutter. I had barely used Illustrator before so I had to learn while I was doing it *sweats* but I got it done, and here's what it looks like. I saved it as .eps (vector) so the cutter could read it.

Once that was done, all that was left was to wait for the cutter to be done with my pieces....

Then I immediately started painting and organizing! Decided to start with something small, so I chose the little triangles, I took them apart and painted each piece individually, then with some scotch tape I held them together and put them aside. Next I painted the main piece as well as the lid, body, and base. I glued the layers first then painted them, same with the rest. The handle was especially fun to do and I think it turned out especially pretty. Always working my way up to the smaller colors. Once all those pieces were painted I glued them in place.

The little lines really tested my pulse *sweats again* I don't think they're perfect, but I tried my best (the circle around the eye is especially scuffed)

Not pictured (because I forgor) I made little stops on the bottom of the lid so it could stay in place and be used as a box. I used some thick 2mm hard grey board to make 4 little rounded stops and glued them to the bottom of the lid. When I was done, I sprayed the entire thing in a shiny finisher!

The inside had a special engraving since I'd originally wanted to throw in the Korok Bookmark I'd made for them in there as a surprise, but since this gift had lagged behind for a while, the bookmark was sent ahead of time along with the other goodies I'd prepared for their bday.

Once it was all ready I threw in some other goodies inside and packaged it for the mail! They got it last week and the reaction was...

In the end, the slate arrived a little later than I had wanted, but it got there in one place and the unboxing video I got from them was priceless hehehe.

So yea, that was my adventure making a custom Sheikah Slate as a bday gift! If I eventually remake it, I'll try to make it look even closer to the original.

Some people cried when they reached their breaking point. Some screamed. Some gave up. 

Others snuck into the storage closet during their shift at work and whined to their boyfriend.

Oh wait, that was just you.

“Today has sucked, babe,” you said as soon as he picked up. (He answered on the first ring, so romantic of him.)

“And here I thought you had died or something.” Tsukki’s voice was flat, even over the phone. “You’re in the middle of a shift, Y/N.”

“I’m hiding in the storage closet,” you retorted. “It’s the middle of January, so the flower shop isn’t getting any customers. But that’s not the po-”

“If you get fired, don’t come whining to me,” Tsukki scoffed.

You huffed at your boyfriend. You’ve been dating Tsukki for almost three months, though you had to admit you wondered why he was even with you; or why you were with him. While you were clingy, emotional, and touch-starved, Tsukki was aloof, salty, and independent. 

Long story short, random calls in the middle of a shift to rant to him weren’t really his thing.

But you really were having a terrible day. The flower shop’s heating and cooling system was messed up, so it was freezing cold. Plus, your manager was turning down all of your suggestions for the flower shop and favoring your coworkers instead. You admit, it was a petty thing to risk everything and complain about. 

(You also admit that you might’ve been doing it to hear his soft, dark voice, but Tsukki didn’t have to know that, did he?)

“I just wanna go home,” you sighed. “Can we cuddle tonight?”

“Stop whining, and I’ll consider it.”

“I’m not whining!”

“You’re so immature.”

“Am not!”

“I’m not even going to respond to that.”

You scowled. “Kei, can you pretend you care about me for one second?”

And another thing—when you weren’t being clingy, emotional, or touch-starved, you were saying things you regretted.

But in this case, you didn’t regret it—yet.

“What?” Tsukki snapped. “That’s ridiculous.”

“I just wanted to hear yo-to have someone to rant to,” you corrected yourself smoothly, and Tsukki was too confused to notice. “I wanted comfort from my boyfriend.”

“Well at least—you know what, never mind.” You heard him sigh. “Sorry. What do you need me to do?”

Tsukki’s apology was what sent the inevitable regret. It was as if someone flipped a switch, and the regret that was bound to come from your words earlier crashed down onto your heart like a pile of bricks.

“No,” you sighed. “I’m being whiny and stupid. I’ll let you get back to your work, Kei. See you at home.”  

You hung up before Tsukki could manage any type of response and throw your phone onto a shelf.

“Can you pretend you care about me for one second?”

Why the heck did I say that? you wondered in frustration. Am I really in such a crappy mood?

You were too wound up in your thoughts to realize that you tossed your phone at a rather precariously—stack of flower pots. They crashed to the ground loudly, making you jump.

Unfortunately, your manager was standing right in front of the storage closet.

You somehow managed to not get fired, but you did put him in an even worse mood, which meant everyone was in a bad mood—and it was your fault.

You dragged your feet as you finally left the flower shop once your shift ended. In one day, you had managed to piss off your boyfriend, your boss, and your coworkers. 

Oddly, you were more worried about the fact that you had pisssed off Tsukki. 

You pushed open the door, already thinking about what you would say to him that night, when you looked up.

And stopped in your tracks.

A car was parked right outside the door. Tsukki’s car.

Tsukki was supposed to be at work until 7.

The driver's window slowly rolled down, revealing no other than your boyfriend staring at you blankly. “Get in.”

His words kicked you out of the shocked daze you were in. “I thought your shift didn’t end until-”

“I left early. Get in.”

You rushed into the passenger side before he could change his mind. To say you were shocked was an understatement. Tsukki didn’t pick you up from work unless his shift ended early—he never left early. 

You stared out the window, squirming in the uncomfortable silence that filled the car. You wanted to apologize, but you thought you would have more time to prepare. How would you even start?

A warm hand slowly slipped into your own. You jumped and turned around, shock ripping through you once you realized what happened.

Tsukki’s free hand was entangled in your own. Tsukki himself wasn’t looking, his eyes set on the road and his mouth set in a firm line.

Was that a brush of pink on his cheeks?

You swallowed your words of shock—you learned from previous experiences that he’d just take his hand away and deny everything—and smiled to yourself. 

Tsukki was holding your hand. Without you telling him to.

The stress of the day was beginning to wear off, and even though a small voice in your head was nagging at you, you were content with just staying quiet.

Not for long, though.

“So how was work anyway?” said Tsukki, glancing over in your direction.” You never got to tell me.”

Thinking of work made you think about your conversation on the phone, bringing a sick feeling to your stomach. You rested your head against the cool window and closed your eyes. “It doesn’t matter.”

“Yes it does,” Tsukki responded, sounding a little annoyed. The annoyance in his voice awakened a tiny thought in your mind: He’s doing this because of what you said earlier. 

You frowned. Did your words really affect him that way? You thought they just made him upset. You didn’t think you would benefit from them.

But you did say that he wasn’t showing he cared. In a really rude way, in fact. He was doing this—leaving his shift early, going out of his way to be physically affectionate, asking about your day—because you were mean to him. 

You might be clingy and desperate for attention, but you weren’t selfish enough to let that happen. “Kei, you don’t have to be doing all of this,” You said. “I shouldn’t have said what I said earlier. I’m sorry.”

Tsukki opened his mouth and closed it repeatedly, thinking of a response and choosing not to say it. “I’m doing this because,” he said finally, “even though you’re really annoying and get on my nerves a lot-”

You pouted. “Hey!”

“-I do love you, dork. I know you were in a bad mood, so I’m cheering you up.” His cheeks were bright red. “So be happy, idiot.”

A goofy smile slowly spreaded across your face. Tsukki only said “I love you” first when you were about to part ways, and even then, you were more likely to say it first. Hearing him say it now was a small thing, but it filled your heart with a giddy, bubbly sort of feeling. 

But again, you remembered your words from before, and the goofy smile on your face slowly faded into a small frown. “Kei, about what I said before-”

“I get it. You were in a bad mood,” Tsukki interrupted.

“That doesn’t excuse what I said.”

“It doesn’t matter, Y/N. You can get over it now.” The corner of his mouth quirked up in a smirk. “Unless you don’t want to watch the movie I was going to have us watch.”

Your eyes widened. “Wait no, I want to watch a movie!”

Tsukki’s laughter was a pure, beautiful thing. It wasn’t the usual mocking laugh you’d hear when he was making fun of you or one of his friends. It was a genuine laugh. 

He turned and softly smiled at you, and you realized with firm certainty that his smile was better than any type of affection he could give you.

An anonymous discussion on monetizing fanfic which makes a lot of good points and I’m holding onto for the next time it comes up.

(I’ve got nothing against people who do monetize their fic, but I dislike the pressure/guilt-tripping/social-justice framing many of the discussions in favor of paid fanwork have).

When has monetization and commercialization ever led to a more diverse, innovative creative output? People who are writing with an eye to monetization or pull-to-publish aren't going to be the people writing weird experimental fic, or obscure rarepairs, or wildly improbable AUs that somehow work, they are going to write the same popular derivative fic of megafandom juggernauts as everyone else, because that's where the money and the audience is. And, like, that's fine if people want to do that! There's nothing wrong morally suspect about writing fun romance fic for a big audience if that's what you enjoy doing in fandom. But let's not pretend that monetizing that is some heroic effort to democratize fandom. One of the best things about fandom is that there is pretty much no barrier to entry. You can write the weirdest, most niche fic on the entire planet, you can write it about a canon only two people in the world have ever seen, you can write it entirely in emoticons, and you can put it online right now. It may not be popular, you may not get a million comments/kudos/twitter followers out of it, only a few people may read it, but there is no gatekeeper telling you not to write it or not to put it on AO3 if you really want to. Monetization would not make that better.

I'm curious what the 3K era's views on spirituality/religion were. One of the ROTK games touched on omens (with a picture of people looking at the stars), Cao Pi was apparently into ghosts and mysticism, some of the games (and DW) mention heaven(s), the will of heaven, etc.

I’m really not the best person to answer that. I only have knowledge in the areas that are relevant to my studies - that is, the military and politics of the era. Related to that, what I can say:

First you had the state religion, a sort of imperial cult. I think some scholars use the term Tianism. Essentially, the emperor was the link between Heaven (Tian) and Earth. He was divinely appointed (the Mandate of Heaven) and all the people of the realm were obligated to obey him. On the other hand, the emperor had to maintain good conduct to keep Heaven’s favor; so theoretically it was a balanced system. The people had to be obedient but the emperor had to be virtuous. If the empire displeased Heaven, disasters would be heaped upon the land as a sign of this disfavor; the emperor would usually dismiss a high official in hopes of placating Heaven. This also included worship of previous ancestors as well as a complex series of rites and rituals that built up from Shang. The Minister of Ceremonies functioned as the sort of high priest of the state religion, with the emperor as the central figure of worship.

How seriously anyone took that, I cannot say. None of the officials I’ve read about ever struck me as being genuinely pious about it. In my experience, it was just an excuse. Ruling emperors used the Mandate of Heaven to justify their authority; rivals said that the Mandate had passed to them because of the previous emperor’s misdeeds. Disasters were an opportunity to remove troublesome ministers from power (Dong Zhuo used such an excuse to make himself Minister of Works) and rituals gave the scholars something to argue over. This may be overly cynical of me, though. Again my study of this is only in relation to the politics of the time, and those are famously amoral.

Outside of that, you had traditional folk religion, often called Shenism. The details varied greatly from region to region but usually included veneration of local gods (or a larger, disorganized pantheon) and famous dead people from the region, as well as a lot of local customs. Veneration of the Yellow Emperor was very common, as were teachings about demons and evil spirits and customs to protect you from them. For the most part Han ignored the local religions unless they intruded upon politics. Contradicting the state religion or questioning the emperor’s divine right (as the Turbans and Rice Rebels did) brought trouble.

Concepts like Confucianism and Daoism existed in recognizable forms, but not exactly familiar ones. Things weren’t nearly so stratified then. You didn’t generally  have people identifying as one or the other, though of course people had their favorites. He Yan’s group was famous for their synthesis of these two often competing philosophies. In general, those who you’d call Daoists (who did embrace the teachings attributed to Laozi) tended to be more mystical and esoteric, while the Confucians (who embraced primarily those teachings attributed to Kongzi and similar philosophers) tended to be more grounded and concerned with practical matters. As general terms these suffice but the reality was a lot messier than that.

Buddhism had a foothold in Qing province, but not in any form that anyone would really call Buddhism. When the concept first reached China it quickly became incorporated into local folk religions and Daoist mysticism. All the traditional Buddhsit teachings sort of fell away. The most famous Buddhist of the time was the bandit Zhai/Ze Rong. It wasn’t until much later that Buddhism as we recognize it (I think it’s fair to call it true Buddhism) was introduced for good.

In short: can I live my life while binding? Can I be comfortable with my body, while I’m doing something physical that pushes my body? Can I exercise and be present in myself and not dissociate? Can you give me permission to live in ways that make me happy?

When I started binding, the rule was: never exercise with a binder on. Never. Anytime you’re at the gym, jogging, swimming, anything? Take that binder off.

Nobody I knew actually followed that rule. We all told it to each other, reminded each other, gave half-ashamed admissions when we broke it: yeah, I know I’m not supposed to, but I have to. That rule was part and parcel of the martyrdom of chest binding. Even on days when I wore my 2011-era binder and hauled a 40-lb backpack across the city and did not, for whatever reason, feel pain afterwards, I still felt guilt! For setting a bad example, for not following The Rules.

It’s past time to be practical. We all have to live our lives. Carry backpacks through school. Go to work. Move house. Push a wheelchair. Breathe with asthma. Work at jobs with “must be able to lift 30-50lbs” in the description. Sing, LARP, commute by bike. We are navigating complicated and awesome and active lives. Here at Shapeshifters, we have always said that at the end of the day, you make the call on what’s best for your body and your life.

That said, our basic safety advisory remains the same: if it hurts, take it off. If you can’t breathe, take it off. During physical activity especially, it’s important to check in with yourself! Pause to stretch, take deep breaths, and ask: am I hurting and ignoring it? All safety guidelines for any kind of physical activity still apply while you’re binding. Living your life should not hurt.

That’s where the Relaxed Fit comes in.

I developed the first relaxed fit binder for myself to wear during yoga. It’s a quarter-size up within our fine-graded sizing system, which means it’s 1” greater in circumference. It never includes a stiff insert. This fit is a compromise: it doesn’t get me the kind of silhouette I want while wearing a button-down and a tie, but it holds everything still, and it lets me do a sustained 60-90 minutes of deep-breathing slow exercise without cramps or soreness. With a baggy T-shirt over it, I look the same as I do wearing my regular size.

For the record, it’s an Incredibly Gay Viper.

Customers who ordered a relaxed fit have reported back that it’s comfortable, sometimes to the point that they’ve forgotten they have it on. It’s been helpful for customers with asthma and EDS to bind without discomfort. Folks who swim in binders have given it good feedback, too.

As with all chest binders, it’s not a cure-all and it won’t work for everyone, but if you’re looking to bind and do some vigorous activities on the physical plane, I really recommend trying it out.

DWS Systems makes its international show debut at IFAT

DWS System, the joint venture between Siltbuster, the water treatment specialist and the German recycling equipment giant, Doppstadt, , will be exhibiting at IFAT 2016 in Munich. This will be the first time DWS Systems has taken part in an international show, since the company was formed in 2015.

Located in hall B1.404, DWS Systems will be exhibiting the latest Gritbuster WT-250 road sweepings recycling system. The WT-250 is uniquely engineered to handle road sweepings, gully waste and trommel fines on a commercial scale, handling up to 25 tonnes per hour. It cleverly uses water to further separate out recyclable materials - washed gravel and sand products - making it easier for materials recycling facilities to separate out on a large scale the constituent elements of the waste they handle. This boosts the level of material reuse and minimises waste going to landfill. Thanks to this level of innovation, the WT-250 is in the running for a prestigious MRW National Recycling Award.

DWS Systems will also be showing its range of water treatment technologies including the HB40R lamella clarifier. This is specifically designed for the removal of suspended solids and other matter from process waters, so that the water can be reused. As a result, those using DWS Systems’ water treatment kit can operate a closed loop process; they don’t have to rely on large settlement lagoons to naturally treat their waste water. The net result is compact solutions which can be rapidly deployed on small sites to reprocess a range of waste materials to a higher standard than can be achieved by the current dry processing techniques.

Curved Conveyor Belt

The curves in conveyor belts are used to carry products around corners, make transfers, and make efficient use of floor space. Curved conveyor belts can make “U” turns to face the direction from which they came. They are made with flat belts and can make turns at 45o, 90o, 135o, and 180o angles.

Incline Conveyor Belt

Incline conveyor belts have a rough, uneven surface to hold materials and prevent them from slipping or falling back. Decline conveyor belts are a continuous operating conveyor system with an articulated frame with a section that is pivoted or placed downward to accommodate downward movement of products from an upper location.

An advancement in conveyor belt technology is the electroadhesion conveyor belt, which acts like a magnet that is activated by a switch to create a strong and secure holding force between the container and the belt. Two low amp power strips placed in the conveyor belt powers its holding force. Materials with an electrically conductive pattern are knitted into the belt to produce the force that holds materials in place.

Filter Conveyor Belt

Unlike conventional conveyor belts, filter conveyor belts allow materials to pass through in order to drain excess liquid from components or filter out toxins and contaminants. Filter conveyor belts are constructed with lateral grooves and holes in the center of the belt to allow liquids and fluids to escape. Drainage holes are placed in a fabric free zone down the center of the belt or sealed to prevent the liquid from soaking into the belt fabric.

Much like a sidewall conveyor belt, filter conveyor belts can have sidewalls to prevent liquids and fluids from spilling over the sides of the belt. They are made of heated polyester, polypropylene, polyolefin, or stainless steel mesh for dewatering applications.

Vacuum filter belts are used for washing coal and other ores to assist in the separation of fluids and solids.

Sorry for the rant but this needs to be put out in the world regardless if this post is seen or not. (And I just read through this and just wanna say before or if you read this, there are so many bad things that happened to me (maybe not too serious) but bad enough to feel like I’m worthless. These are just a few) (plus I only worked there for 2 weeks sooooooo)

I worked at a Japanese resturant, owned by Chinese people, that recently just opened. Most of his employees are foreigners and most of them are on some sort of visa, meaning they need work to pay either their visa or student debt or bills or whatever. Meaning that he can easily manipulate these people because they probably are either too scared to say anything or unaware of the legal working rights. I am the only Australian born that he decided to hire (for idk what reason).

Through out the 2 weeks that I worked there, I have been (I guess I’ll use this term very loosely) “abused”.

1) (Boss’ wife) first actual day of working, new building just opened all restaurants are trying to engage to public to eat at their resturants. One of The resturants hires belly dancers for their entertainment and it was literally right outside my work. Part of my job was to greet and welcome walkby people to engage them in the restaurant. Bitch Boss’ wife tells me that I should be welcoming these passabyers that, first, aren’t even looking in the restaurant’s direction, second, are all facing and hve their undivided attention to the belly dancers, and third, that’s fucking rude. And so what she does is threaten me saying “IF YOU DONT WELCOME THE CUSTOMERS IM NOT GOING TO PAY YOU THE RATE I SAID” first of all this wasn’t even in the job description when I applied, and not even in the job interview no one said I’d be embarrassing myself in front of a store trying to bring in customers because your store is so shitty that customers won’t wanna come in on their own. Then she says after like 10 mins :” IM GOING TO GET ANGRY AT YOU” first of all “you’re going to get angry at me”, bitch please, I might be the youngest employee (18) but you can’t scare me like that, I’m not a child, and second, you getting angry that’s putting toxic on yourself and not doing anything to me other than me hating your plastic ass face more than I already do.

2) (Boss) he expects change too quickly. New job, little experience of waitering, I’m still getting the kinks and handles of everything. One mistake I did was I served out a drink without spiking the receipt before handing it out, meaning the other waiters won’t know if it’s done or not. And yes that’s my fault 100% and I’ve learned from it. But one time I’m pouring wine behind the bar handing it right out to the customer that’s legit 2 tables away from the bar. Come back in 2 seconds and he scolds me saying I did it wrong again straight away. That was my first time back talking. I said I literally just came back I was about to do it. But here of course pick on the youngest employee tell him everything he is doing wrong

The most serious thing, when I found out my pay would only be $15 an hour (for an 18 year old may I remind you), I was confused. So I called up fair work australia (a government agency that help workers that are unsure of their working rights) and asked what is my legal minimum wage for an 18 year old as a waiter, they told me that my legal minimum wage is higher that what I was getting paid. So next day I go talk to him and asked why is it I’m getting paid below the minimum wage, and the fact that he has the nerve to tell me “that is what we agreed on during the interview” As from the title you probably can tell that he is manipulating me. Thank god for my good memory and also that I constantly complained about this, during the interview I asked (like I ask all of the people when I go for an interview) “as an 18 year old how much would I get an hour?” He told me “oh I’m not sure I think it’s 15$ per hour I hve to go check” so my stupid mind thought he was gonna get back to me. The fact he has the audacity to tell me that I agreed on $15. GTFO (oh and he also blamed me for asking for my legal rate saying I’m not thinking about the team because it’s hard to pay the whole team and you’re only asking for more) well if you can’t pay us the legal rate or at least me DONT FUCKING OPEN THIS BUSINESS

As you can tell where this story is going, the fact that i was probably the first person from his 2 resturants to challenge his ego and call out his illegal bullshit, he goes ahead and fires me the same night (tonight). And dw guys ima report his ass and at least try to bring his ass down. Probs is too much, but he manipulated me and made me feel so fucking bad I had to call up a counseling hotline cause I felt so much like shit I needed professional help

What I’ve learnt: IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION OR A PROBLEM AT WORK OR ANYTHING, DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK BECAUSE IF YOU DONT DO ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT YOUR CONCERNED ABOUT NOTHINGS GONNA HAPPEN, ( and probs end up regretting that you didn’t say anything in the first place)

EW: When I started nine years ago many, if not most, small businesses were primarily focused on serving Jamaica, not realising that the market size here is not growing.

The standard/quality of their products, services and packaging were also poor. However, we are currently seeing great improvement in that more businesses are getting into export. There are quite a few businesses that are also serving clients locally as well as internationally via the Internet.

I am recommending that small businesses think globally instead of locally, because whether or not we like it we are no longer just competing with our country men/women but also with international service providers and manufactures via imports. Enhance the quality of products and services.

Maintain a lean structure and build strong relationships with your internal and external customers. Also, forge alliance, and collaborate by pooling resources together for the benefit of your businesses. Stop trying to do everything by yourself.

DW: There are so many business start-up needs —business plans, tax compliance certificates, national contracts commission certificates, annual returns, payroll, business registration, etc….it can be daunting and a lot of persons don’t bother. What is your view as to what policies can be effected to make doing business in Jamaica easier?

EW: Doing business has become easier over the years and yes it is still a lot to handle as a small business owner. DBJ voucher system has been a big help for many small businesses, the incubator at JBDC along with grants and technical support from Heart Trust, entrepreneurship completion at NHT, among others. However, we need special incentives (tax breaks, special interest rates on loans, grants, technical support for FREE, and special incubators) for young (18-25/30) people who are starting businesses. We need to cut out the double taxation for LLC.

DW: Why did C&E expand to Mandeville? What was the need that you saw there?

EW: That office serves Manchester, St Elizabeth and Clarendon; we are meeting our customers halfway. Therefore, instead of them having to come to Kingston in the maze of doing business, they instead just visit our office and we sort out all the paperwork for them. We are saving them time, money and helping them to be compliant.DW: Tell us about team building. In your experience how can you build a team to build you up in return?

EW: Team building is extremely important. I rely on my team to hold the nuts and bolts of C&E together. The more efficient and reliable the people you have on your team as an entrepreneur, the greater your value.

We do several initiatives at C&E to strengthen the relationship with the staff. First, everyone is led to feel like they are more than just an employee but instead an important part of the comp. We do yearly training, shorts day, funny pics/video day, birthday celebration for staff, among other things. They are also a part of the yearly planning session.

DW: Mommy guilt… it’s real and it has to be managed. What is your strategy to be the best mom to your two children while being the best businesswoman you can be?

EW: This one is indeed a touchy one because I do feel guilty at times. Nonetheless, it seems I’m not doing too badly. I have a very strong support system inclusive of my mom, grandmother, spouse, assistant, and friends. I off some things on them allowing me more time for family. I go on dates with my daughter. My son is now 19 and, trust me, don’t have time for me. I attend most meetings at my daughter’s school, read her stories almost every night, plan family activities and events but, to be honest, I know It’s not enough because sometimes I don’t complete all her assignments on time, I don’t play with her as much as I should, I don’t check on my son as much as I should. Nonetheless these are the things that work for me:

1. Plan out every single second of each day.

2. Teach my children to do things for themselves so that they can help.

3. Schedule my weeks months in advance.

4. Use up the people in my life. My spouse is like my little business reminder; he keeps me in check re: the things I need to do re: business. He is also an entrepreneur, so of course he understands the importance of getting these things done. My assistant does an excellent job with managing the offices; my mom and grandmother mostly assist with my daughter.

5. Make my daughter do exercises that make her tired so she gives me a break.

6. Take some me time (date with my spouse, spa, reading my books, gym) so that I can better serve in my different capacities because whenever I’m extremely tired.

DW: Wealth creation is something that business owners talk about but don’t really have a strategy around. How can business owners create value not only for their community but for themselves?

EW: They can start by taking these simple steps:

1. Spend less and seek to earn more (live below your means).

2. Seek to earn from multiple sources.

3. Save 10-30 per cent of your income for one to two years and then invest it.

4. Learn about investments.

5. Do not get trapped in the middle-class liability maze (buying expensive cars, phones, clothes and living in expensive rental apartments).

6. Acquire assets (things that will increase in value and will earn money for you).

7. Pay yourself.
