POINTS OF INTEREST
{ CW: Homophobia } ★ Doris never had a conventional family situation, but it was hers nonetheless. By the time her parents had her, the third child and only girl in the family, they were already separated and moving on with their lives. It never occurred to her that most people didn’t have two mums and two dads in the picture. It wasn’t until she went to primary school that she learned that her family’s living situation wasn’t entirely legal. For Doris, it never made any difference that her mums had a house and her dads had a separate one. When her family sat her down and explained the importance of being discrete, and why it was vital, Doris was left with an indescribable feeling of anger and the injustice of it all. Her parents loved each other, they loved her brothers, and they loved her, why did it matter if they were the same sex?
★ The first time Doris showed signs of magic, her older brother excitedly reported it to her whole family over their Sunday dinner. Jem (James) gave the animated tale of how his sister had fallen in the river and gotten caught in a current (mentioning adamantly that it was not his fault) and called the vines of a tree down to her. Their parents were more concerned that she’d fallen in than the tale her brother was spinning. Chalked up to childhood imagination they didn’t think much of his claim. However, as more odd things started happening around their daughter, they quickly came to realize their son’s claims might not be so outlandish. When it came to light that Doris was indeed a witch, her family had different reactions, but ultimately all good. Her brothers, Jem and Thomas, were more than a little excited, and maybe just a touch jealous. Still, they were supportive, and that was what mattered to her the most. When it came to her parents, they were unsurprisingly startled by the news, but after learning more about it, they were nothing short of supportive.
★ Had Doris put all of her efforts into her academics, she’d have graduated top of her year. As it stood, she was still in the top five percent, and had a plethora of organizations on her resume to boot. The thing about Doris was that she didn’t want to just know everything, she wanted to use her knowledge to help people. When it came down to it, she joined every organization that had to do with fighting for equality, social reform, and bettering their community. If she partied now again, who could blame her? Everyone needed to let off steam, and Doris was no different. Joining the Quidditch team was just one more way of allowing that to happen. As it turned out, it also allowed her to work out her competitive edge in an appropriate setting.
★ When Doris got her acceptance letter to Hogwarts, she was over the moon. Not only was Hogwarts one of the best uni’s, it also had a fantastic social sciences department. Before she completed her first year she knew she wanted to be a journalist. Doris was made for discovering the truth. Some might chalk her up as a conspiracy theorist, but she never backed a theory that didn’t have proof. If there wasn’t any, well Doris was the first one to start searching for it. Never one to back down, Doris knew she had the guts to go after stories that people were too afraid to tell. Nothing could get between her and her need for the truth. Despite having a loving family, and a family that she loved dearly, she made her home at Hogwarts. It nurtured her need for involvement, for knowledge, and helped her discover what she truly wanted out of her life.
