My CyberpowerPC desktop (who is bout 10 years old and full of custom parts) half-died yesterday so I had to buy a new one. Both desktops are undergoing data transfer rn so I won't have either of them back for a couple of days or so.
So right now I'm set up on my ancient Win7 ASUS laptop that screams and keeps resetting its internal clock to 2010 whenever it powers off. If this wasn't temporary, I'd be more bothered about it.
I updated him yesterday for the first time since 2009.

If you are building or buying a new PC, these are known as Optical Drives. The internal lasers are used to "see" or "read" the physical media you insert.
Most custom desktop building/assembly companies, like CyberPowerPC, should have a section in their configurators to include these parts in the build.
But even prefab/OTC computers my still include them, just called out as Optical Drives in their specs.
If you are dealing with a Computer Sales Professional, ask for it as an option, or see if the model computer you are interested can be retrofitted with an aftermarket part. Most desktop/tower PCs should be able to accommodate this with little hassle.
If you have a desktop already, or even some laptops, look around on sites like Newegg.com for computer parts to add to your own machines.
I also recommend saving up to buy a custom desktop for yourself if you never have. Get familiar with how computers actually function on a physical and mechanical level. Demystify it for yourself. It's incredibly straightforward once you learn it. Maybe not exactly cheap, but understanding what you are using and how the parts work will translate to most other computing devices in your life.

Is a PC Building Service Viable?
In a world increasingly driven by gaming, content creation, and remote work, the demand for custom-built PCs has surged dramatically. As more people realize the benefits of tailoring their machines to specific needs—whether for ultra-fast gaming, high-end video editing, or simply cost-effective daily use—the appeal of a personalized system is greater than ever. Naturally, this leads to the big question: Is a PC building service viable? The short answer is yes, but success depends on strategy, quality, and positioning.
Starting a PC building service isn’t just about assembling components. It’s about offering value in the form of expertise, time savings, and customization. Many people want a powerful, purpose-built machine but feel overwhelmed by the tech involved. Compatibility issues, BIOS updates, thermal concerns, and cable management can turn a DIY build into a frustrating ordeal. This is where a PC building service steps in as the perfect solution—offering professionally built systems with personalized specifications, guaranteed stability, and often, a polished aesthetic that rivals or exceeds what prebuilt manufacturers offer.
Viability begins with identifying your audience. Hardcore gamers, streamers, developers, small business owners, and even students are increasingly investing in custom PCs. Gamers, in particular, are often willing to spend premium prices for high frame rates, RGB flair, and future-proof parts. Similarly, creators working with video editing, 3D modeling, or music production need specialized rigs with powerful CPUs, GPUs, and large amounts of memory. By offering tiered packages—budget builds, mid-range workhorses, and high-end beasts—you can cater to various buyer personas and budgets, increasing your service’s appeal.
From a business perspective, the margins on PC building services can be profitable if managed wisely. The build fee, which typically ranges from $100 to $300 depending on complexity and service level, is a direct revenue source. Many builders also earn affiliate commissions or reseller margins by sourcing parts. Partnering with component suppliers and software vendors can reduce costs while enhancing offerings—such as including Windows installation, driver setup, and software optimization.
Customer trust and reputation are vital. Unlike major brands, a small PC building service relies heavily on reviews, word-of-mouth, and transparent communication. A well-optimized website, active social media presence, and clear documentation (build specs, benchmarks, thermal performance, warranty terms) help boost credibility. Offering support services—like troubleshooting, upgrades, or cleaning—can build long-term relationships and recurring income.
Location also plays a role in the viability of a PC building service. In urban areas with limited tech support or underserved gaming communities, there’s often untapped potential. Likewise, local advertising through gaming cafes, community colleges, or tech expos can attract eager clients who’d rather trust someone nearby than order a faceless prebuilt. Even if you’re operating remotely, online ordering and shipping services allow for a broader customer base, provided you can guarantee careful assembly and safe delivery.
Tumblr media
However, competition is a factor to consider. Established brands like iBUYPOWER, NZXT BLD, and CyberPowerPC already dominate parts of the market. So differentiation is key. Focus on what you can offer that they don’t: personal consultations, ultra-specific builds (like emulation boxes or silent PCs), or exclusive cable management and lighting aesthetics. Speed is another competitive edge—large brands often require weeks for delivery, while a small team can often build and ship in a few days.
To stay relevant, you must also remain updated with hardware trends—new CPUs, GPUs, cooling solutions, and cases emerge constantly. Attending trade shows, following review channels, and engaging in PC-building communities will help keep your knowledge and recommendations cutting-edge.
In conclusion, launching a PC building service is absolutely viable, but it demands a blend of technical skill, customer service, and business savvy.

Pre-Built PC: The Smart Choice for Modern Computing Needs
In the ever-evolving world of technology, the demand for high-performance computing has surged, whether for gaming, content creation, or everyday productivity. One solution that has gained substantial popularity is the pre-built PC. These ready-to-use machines offer a host of advantages over custom-built systems, making them an attractive choice for users across all experience levels. In this article, we'll explore what a pre-built PC is, its benefits, potential drawbacks, and what to consider before making a purchase.
What is a Pre-Built PC?
A pre-built PC is a desktop computer assembled and configured by a manufacturer or retailer before being sold to the end user. Unlike custom PCs, which require users to select and assemble individual components, pre-built systems come complete with all hardware installed, software preloaded, and ready to run out of the box.
Popular manufacturers of pre-built PCs include Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, MSI, and boutique builders like Alienware, NZXT, and CyberPowerPC. These companies offer a wide range of models tailored for specific needs, including gaming, business, education, and creative work.
Advantages of Pre-Built PCs
Convenience
Pre-built PCs save time and effort. There’s no need to research parts compatibility, handle physical assembly, or troubleshoot initial setup issues.
Technical Support and Warranty
Most pre-built PCs come with customer support and warranties that cover the entire system. This provides peace of mind and easy access to repairs or replacements.
Software Optimization
Manufacturers often install necessary drivers and software updates, ensuring that the system is ready to perform optimally from day one.
Bulk Pricing Benefits
Large manufacturers can often secure components at lower costs, occasionally passing these savings on to consumers, especially in mid-range models.
Professional Aesthetics and Cable Management
Pre-built systems are generally well-organized and professionally assembled, resulting in neat cable management and improved airflow.
Drawbacks to Consider
Limited Customization
While convenient, pre-built PCs usually offer less flexibility in component choices. Upgrading may also be more difficult due to proprietary parts or non-standard layouts.
Bloatware
Many systems come with pre-installed software that users may not want, taking up valuable storage and potentially affecting performance.
Higher Costs at the High-End
Enthusiast-level users may find that high-end pre-built PCs are more expensive compared to building an equivalent custom PC.
Who Should Buy a Pre-Built PC?
Casual Users: Ideal for those who need a reliable, ready-to-use computer for everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and office work.
Gamers: Entry to mid-tier gaming PCs are often better value when bought pre-built, especially during sales.
Professionals: Creatives and business users benefit from high-performance workstations configured and optimized by experts.
First-Time PC Owners: Pre-built PCs remove the intimidation factor associated with custom builds.
Tips for Buying a Pre-Built PC
Determine Your Needs: Decide what the PC will be used for—gaming, design, productivity, etc.
Set a Budget: Pre-built PCs can range from $400 to several thousand dollars. Know your limits.
Check Upgrade Paths: Ensure the PC can be upgraded in the future (RAM slots, GPU clearance, etc.).
Read Reviews: Look for real-world feedback on performance, build quality, and customer support.
Compare Warranties: A solid warranty can add long-term value to your purchase.
Conclusion
A pre-built PC is an excellent option for users who want a hassle-free, reliable, and efficient computing solution. Whether you're a gamer, a professional, or simply someone who wants a computer that works straight out of the box, pre-built systems offer a compelling mix of performance, support, and convenience. As technology continues to advance, these machines will likely become even more sophisticated and accessible, making them a smart choice for modern users.
