Sunday Salon / Sunday Post – A Week in the Life of Dollycas – Weekly Rewind – New Arrivals
Tumblr media
The Sunday Salon is a Facebook group that has become an informal week-in-review gathering place for bloggers. It is also a place to share our thoughts about things of a bookish nature. You can also link up weekly on Readerbuzz. The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It’s a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE! September already. Why is this year flying by so fast? Remi had his 1st football game of the season last Saturday night. It is tackle, no more flags, this year. Sadly the 6th grade didn't have enough players to field their own team so they are now combined with the 7th graders. That means playing a little less and learning new positions. The team took a little time to find their rhythm and lost 0-6. Remi had some great plays including one that caused an interception. They didn't have a game this week due to the holiday weekend. You can see I have a new ride. Mr. Dollycas surprised me with a scooter. So I traded in the wheelchair for it for sporting events and other adventures. It's my favorite color - Purple! I am still getting used to operating it and just like when I was driving a car, reverse is not my strong suit.  Hopefully, I will get it all figured out soon. Two of the grands started school on Wednesday—Thomas in Second Grade and Charlotte in Kindergarten. The Varsity boys played Friday night against the team that kept them from playing for a championship last year. They went on to win the state championship. So it was time for some redemption. Kaden did not play, nor did he play the first game last week. He suffered a concussion a couple of weeks ago at practice and has been following the concussion protocol. He was finally cleared to practice last Monday and has some catching up to do. They also have a new head coach this year so all the boys are adjusting to new ways of doing things. The game was a nail-biter and there were some mistakes but the Cardinals took the lead and held it to win 20 - 16. This week is a huge game against another state champ. Kaden hopes to be ready to play. It is hard for him to stand on the sidelines and watch. He loves playing this game. It was also Youth Night at the Varsity football game where kids from Kindergarten - 8th Grade were recognized. Of course, I did my reading, blogging, and book tours all week but chasing the grandkids is so much fun. How was your week? Weekly Rewind - August 26 - 31, 2024 Monday - My Reading Itinerary Monday! – Week #35 – 2024 Tuesday - Murder at Vinland (A Gilded Newport Mystery) by Alyssa Maxwell #Review / #Giveaway @KensingtonBooks @Alyssa__Maxwell Wednesday - Cozy Wednesday featuring In the Event of Murder (A Starlit Bookshop Mystery) by Cynthia Kuhn #Review / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour @cynthiakuhn Thursday - A Poisonous Palate (A Key West Food Critic Mystery) by Lucy Burdette #Review / #Giveaway @LucyBurdette @crookedlanebks Friday - Dear Little Corpses (A Josephine Tey Mystery) by Nicola Upson #Spotlight / #Giveaway @crookedlanebks Plus - Ellen Byron Saturday - Death at the Manor (LILY ADLER MYSTERY) by Katharine Schellman #Spotlight / #Giveaway HAVE A GREAT WEEK EVERYONE! #Giveaway ~ The Study Of Secrets (A Lila Maclean Academic Mystery) by Cynthia Kuhn... #books #CozyMystery #readers
The Study of Secrets (A Lila Maclean Academic Mystery) by Cynthia Kuhn
About The Study of Secrets
The Study of Secrets (A Lila Maclean Academic Mystery) Cozy Mystery/Amateur Sleuths 5th in Series Publisher: Henery Press (May 26, 2020) Hardcover: 242 pages ISBN-10: 163511618X ISBN-13: 978-1635116182 Paperback: 242 pages ISBN-10: 1635116155 ISBN-13: 978-1635116151 Digital ASIN: B085P3CF39
There could be nowhere more fitting for English professor Lila Maclean to spend her sabbatical than in a proper Victorian mansion. The whimsical Callahan House seems to have materialized from the pages of the mystery novels she is researching, with its enchanting towers, cozy nooks, and charming library. Unfortunately, it also features a body in the study.
Residents of Larkston have long believed that the Callahan family is cursed—the murder on the estate sets the town buzzing. Wild rumors are fueled by a gossipy blogger who delights in speculation, and further crimes only intensify the whispers and suspicions. A newly discovered manuscript, however, appears to expose startling facts beneath the fictions. When Lila steps in to sort the truth from the lies, it may cost her everything, as someone wants to make dead certain that their secrets stay hidden.

The Spirit in Question (A Lila Maclean Academic Mystery) by Cynthia Kuhn
About the Book
The Spirit in Question (A Lila Maclean Academic Mystery) Cozy Mystery 3rd in Series Henery Press (October 2, 2018) Trade Paperback | 252 pages ISBN 9781635114065, 1635114063 Digital ASIN: B07FDL54HG
English professor Lila Maclean knew drama would be involved when she agreed to consult on Stonedale University’s production of Puzzled: The Musical.
But she didn’t expect to find herself cast into such chaos: the incomprehensible play is a disaster, the crumbling theater appears to be haunted, and, before long, murder takes center stage.
The show must go on—yet as they speed toward opening night, it becomes clear that other members of the company may be targeted as well. Lila searches for answers while contending with a tenacious historical society, an eccentric playwright, an unsettling psychic, an enigmatic apparition, and a paranormal search squad.
With all of this in play, will she be able to identify who killed her colleague…or will it soon be curtains for Lila too?
Interview with the Author
What initially got you interested in writing?
My parents reading books to me when I was young, followed by visits to the library, which seemed like such a magical place.
What genres do you write in?
I write fiction, poetry, essays, and literary criticism.
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
Literary criticism and essays arose as part of my job as an English professor. The fiction and poetry—I started writing them as a kid and never stopped. However, I didn’t write mystery until about 7 years ago, when I decided to go after my dream of writing a novel.
How did you break into the field?
After I finished my first novel, Semester of Our Discontent, I submitted it to the William F. Deeck-Malice Domestic Grant and to Henery Press. Both of those things kicked off the rest of the adventure!
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
First and foremost, I hope they enjoy reading the books. That’s the most important thing! Then, if they are left thinking about some of the issues raised by the books, that’s wonderful. (The books are traditional mysteries, and light in tone, but they do touch on serious topics as well.)
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
The creative process addresses a need I have to try and articulate something about the world. And the shaping of that in words is deeply engaging. Later, when the writing is out in the world, it’s wonderful to talk with readers.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Making the page reflect what I see in my mind.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
Read as much as you can, join professional organizations dedicated to your genre, and don’t give up!
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
Traditional, humorous, and academic mysteries are at the top of the list, but I read all kinds of things. As long as the voice is compelling, I’m in.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
I’m a mom of two. Keep trying to get my sons to read mysteries, but it’s hard to compete with Fortnite and soccer!
What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?

Is tenure worth a murder?
Written by an academic we can really felt drawn into the American way of university life. To a British lecturer in a British university that is not Oxbridge, this way of life seems very remote from my own experience. To begin with. This whole notion of tenure. Which I have commented on in the past.…

Cozy Wednesday featuring In the Event of Murder (A Starlit Bookshop Mystery) by Cynthia Kuhn #Review / #Giveaway - Great Escapes Book Tour @cynthiakuhn
Tumblr media
Welcome to Cozy Wednesday! It is my pleasure to feature In the Event of Murder by Cynthia Kuhn today! In the Event of Murder (A Starlit Bookshop Mystery) by Cynthia Kuhn About In the Event of Murder In the Event of Murder (A Starlit Bookshop Mystery) Cozy Mystery 2nd in Series Setting - Colorado Publisher ‏ : ‎ Crooked Lane Books (August 20, 2024) Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 304 pages ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1639100709 ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1639100705 Digital https://amzn.to/3xRh1X8 It’s the star-studded event of the season in Silvercrest, Colorado—but some of the guests might not make it to the last dance alive in the second charming installment of the Starlit Bookshop mysteries from Agatha Award-winning author Cynthia Kuhn. Nestled on the banks of a breathtaking Rocky Mountain river and dotted with delightful boutiques and galleries, Silvercrest, Colorado, is a book lover’s paradise. Bookseller and literary event planner Emma Starrs is looking forward to attending the annual Silvercrest Library Gala, a glamorous evening with celebrities including the legendary Whitney Willton, currently on the hit crime show Chasers, and her niece, party-planner-to-the-stars Lyra Willton. Gala Week is full of exciting activities honoring both page and screen, and library board president Tabitha Baxter is basking in the glow of her successful launch—until Lyra is found dead. With the gala only days away, the board asks Emma for help, despite Tabitha—her longstanding nemesis—bristling over the choice. Emma agrees, even though she is already in charge of a classic mystery panel at her family’s bookstore, Starlit Books, which turns out to have its own challenges. Meanwhile, Whitney, who is aware of Emma’s sleuthing skills, begs her to find the killer. The case grows more complex with the disappearance of several priceless objects, an attack on one of the attending celebrities, and other predicaments. Emma searches for clues while handling every unexpected twist and turn leading up to the extravagant affair. But when the guests step onto the red carpet, a killer still lurks in the shadows—and murder just might become the main event. Dollycas's Thoughts Silvercrest, Colorado is a book lover's dream on the banks of the Rocky Mountain River and readers arrive just in time for the annual Silvercrest Library Gala. The event has brought celebrities from the hit crime show Chasers including the legendary Whitney Willton to town. Her niece, Lyra Willton, party planner-to-the-stars is in attendance as well. Library Board President Tabitha Baxter was thrilled with the success of the events until Lyra Willton's body was found dead behind the scenes. Tabitha panics because Lyra had organized much of the gala and the board asks her arch-enemy Emma Starrs to take over. She accepts knowing that dealing with Tabitha will be a challenge but she would do anything for the library. Whitney also begs Whitney to find her niece's killer. Soon another celebrity is attacked and priceless items go missing. Can Emma untwist the clues and catch the killer before the main event starts? or will the killer be in attendance for the big event? ____ I am not sure why there was such a big gap from the first book, How to Book a Murder (December 7, 2021) to this one (August 20, 2024) but it took a few chapters to get back in the groove with the core characters. In this story, like the previous Emma steps in to replace a party planner while trying to save the family bookshop. Again her nemesis Tabitha Baxter is in charge and driving Emma crazy. Emma, her sister Lucy, and her aunt Nora, all feel true to life and relatable. Tabitha pushes my buttons as much as she does Emma's. The murder mystery is set after Christmas with several activities ending with the gala on New Year's Eve. Before that is a screening of an episode of the TV show Chasers at Bluestone complete with cocktails which was very well attended and the scene of the murder. That means plenty of suspects but both Emma and I pared those down quickly. The mystery was not as complex as I expected. There was a lot of focus on the event and its planning. There was a bit of repetition as Emma worked through the clues while at Tabitha's beck and call. Emma had the patience of a saint and behaved much better than I would have. The guilty party was at the top of my list and the confession revealed a very petty person. Ms. Kuhn does an excellent job at setting each scene. An unfortunate event put the gala in jeopardy and I was thrilled with how Emma handled it and the help she received. The space was so aptly described I felt like I was right there peering over Emma's shoulder. In the Event of Murder was an enjoyable read with characters I want to get to know better. Silvercrest and Starlit Books sounds like my happy place being a book lover’s paradise. I could easily spend days, months, or years traveling from shop to shop. I am anxious to return. I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next installment of the Starlit Bookshop Mystery Series. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC. BLOG TOUR - The Art of Vanishing
DISCLAIMER: This content has been provided to THE PULP AND MYSTERY SHELF by Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours. No compensation was received. This information required by the Federal Trade Commission.
The Art of Vanishing (A Lila Maclean Academic Mystery) Publisher: Henery Press (February 28, 2017) Paperback: 262 pages ISBN-13: 978-1635111699 Kindle – ASIN: B01NBHR7Y6
Synopsis
When Professor Lila Maclean is sent to interview celebrated author and notorious cad Damon Von Tussel, he disappears before her very eyes. The English department is thrown into chaos by the news, as Damon is supposed to headline Stonedale University’s upcoming Arts Week.
The chancellor makes it clear that he expects Lila to locate the writer and set events back on track immediately. But someone appears to have a different plan: strange warnings are received, valuable items go missing, and a series of dangerous incidents threaten the lives of Stonedale’s guests. After her beloved mother, who happens to be Damon’s ex, rushes onto campus and into harm’s way, Lila has even more reason to bring the culprit to light before anything—or anyone—else vanishes.
  INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR:
What initially got you interested in writing?
I don’t remember ever not wanting to write!
What genres do you write in?
Fiction, poetry, and literary criticism.
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
I think most children tell stories, and some of us just keep on telling them in various forms, like fiction and poetry; the literary criticism, however, is a product of the profession (I teach English).
How did you break into the field?
Just kept sending things out. I’d had poems, stories, and essays published here and there over the years, but it wasn’t until I received the William F. Deeck-Malice Domestic Grant for Unpublished Writers that the novel began to seem like a possibility. Malice Domestic folks were the first ones in the mystery field to say yes, and I’m forever grateful to them. The next step was Henery Press saying yes, and of course I’m extremely grateful to them as well!
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
I hope that they enjoyed the reading, first and foremost. If they walk away thinking about some of the issues explored within, too, that would be wonderful.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
Articulating the story that you are compelled to tell.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Everything about writing can be challenging, honestly. But it’s creative too, so that balances things out.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
Never give up. Read as much as you can, write as much as you can, and join groups that are engaged in the same work that you are (for example, Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers).
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
I love all kinds of traditional mysteries, but especially academic mysteries.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
I can’t think of anything. Kind of embarrassing, that.
What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
There’s more information at cynthiakuhn.net.
  Thank you for hosting me!
