The Highway Rat

Classic Donaldson formula - a protracted build-up over three stages, a song - or is it ditty? - that you kind of sing, kind of don't want to sing, kind of get annoyed with, kind of get carried away with as you prance about dressed as Dick Turpin.

 You have been here before, classic Donny and Schaff stuff. They are the archetypal best sellers whilst they are still being crafted with a Mont Blanc pen and, erm, a HB pencil; a good HB pencil.

 I cannot deny it; my wannabe trend setting fake bearded self desires a negative reaction. These books are…Just. Too. Popular. Give me a hand penned ode to a Dalston ferret called Denzel with a side of Azerbaijani cereal please and cold pressed queen bee breast milk please.

 Yet, this particular story in the Donny/Schaff cannon is by no means the most obvious. Hey, it centres around a rogue who steals and robs but, alas the perils of greed is the main lesson being sung; being sung. Oh yes, the perils of greed are being sung - being sung. Sung.

 Ah, the trap is sprung you see?

 If nothing else, it is actually that song that grates on certain reads. Rosie never really joined in and it never feels like it hits the desired Dicky Turpin notes; or am I thinking about Horrible Histories?

 Anyway, it is solid fare and as attractive as a Scheffler always is. Add it to the collection - particularly if on offer - but I do not think it will be truly loved; truly loved I wrote. No I do not think it will be truly loved.

 Like any rat in that sense.

You know, @leelayline made me have an epiphany earlier this week. I'm an author of a children's book, as many of you may have seen. And I've been trying to figure out how to market to the moms and dads. But the problem is I've been taking advice from my own mom. Who's in her fifties. When in reality I should be marketing for the people who are my age, the ones who are raising the age group my book is for.
