Roy’s Favorite

Summary: There’s only one person on the team Roy refuses to yell at.

Roy’s loud voice has been bellowing across the pitch for the past hour. It’s pretty obvious he’d woken up on the wrong side of the bed that morning.

His gaze, sharp as a hawk, slowly moves between the Richmond players, searching for any mistakes. They’re doing a scrimmage — Ted’s idea — testing out some new strategies and plays.

But, in Roy’s opinion, Ted isn’t really watching. Not carefully enough to pick up on the errors, that is.

“HUGHES!” Roy suddenly barks loudly from across the pitch. “Fucking follow it in!”

Colin, from the other side, just nods, then refocuses on the scrimmage. But not even thirty seconds later, Roy’s loud voice carries again.

“ROJAS!”

Dani jolts as if he’s been in a trance. Roy gives him a death stare. “You’re not fucking open! You should be open!”

Dani grits his teeth, trying to recenter himself. Roy watches carefully as the players continue their scrimmage, narrowing his eyes every time he sees a mistake.

“BUMBERCATCH! I’ve seen better headers from my fucking niece, and she’s seven!”

The scrimmage continues, with Roy shouting out corrections — or insults — every couple minutes. But then, something interesting happens.

Sam, collecting a pass from Dani, is getting cornered, so he aims a pass at Jamie — but Jan Maas, playing for the other side, intercepts it. Sam tenses, waiting for Roy to yell.

It never happens.

“Oi. Sam.” Roy’s voice is much calmer now, and his usage of the young midfielder’s first name instead of his last catches the attention of the entire team. Sam’s eyebrows raise, and he turns to Roy, a look of curiosity — and slight disbelief — on his face.

“Tartt wasn’t open yet. You’ve gotta give him a minute to get into position before you pass,” he advises, his tone shockingly nonchalant.

Jamie, scoffing, nudges Colin and murmurs under his breath, “Oi. The rest of us get fucking screamed at, and Sam gets constructive criticism?”

Sam, standing right by Roy, looks a mix of confused and… happy. And he’s also determined — more determined than ever to get this right.

“Thanks, Roy,” he says with a smile and a nod. “I will work on my timing.”

Jamie, from the side, scoffs again, gesturing towards Sam and Roy. “I mean, what the hell? They’re using each others’ first names.” He shakes his head in mock disgust. “The favoritism…”

Colin suddenly smirks and turns back to Jamie. “You sound jealous, mate.”

Jamie reaches out, giving Colin’s shoulder a playful punch. “Fuck off.”

“OI!” Roy suddenly shouts, capturing the whole team’s attention once again. His gaze suddenly zeroes in on Jamie directly, who quietly gulps when he sees that look on the older man’s face.

“If anyone’s got a fucking problem with the way I’m doing things around here…” he announces, “…I don’t give a shit. Go complain to this gaffer.”

He gestures towards Ted, who just flashes him a friendly smile. Roy growls back.

“Now GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND KEEP PLAYING!” Roy bellows loudly. The players, even Jamie, scramble to quickly get back in position and return to the scrimmage.

Sam, smiling to himself, realizes how lucky he is to be one of Roy Kent’s favorites. But he knows he can only rely on that for so long. He has to keep proving himself. So, as the scrimmage resumes, he finds himself more focused than ever.

The next time he gains possession of the ball, he watches more carefully, seeing that Jamie’s still getting into position. Sam stalls, jogging outwards until Jamie’s ready. With one swift kick, he passes the ball.

When Jamie scores off of his pass, Sam locks eyes with Roy and flashes him a grin. And although Roy doesn’t grin back, the corners of his mouth seem to upturn, just slightly.

And that’s all the motivation Sam needs.

Okay, so maybe that wasn't the right thing to say. It wasn't that Jamie's memory was bad, per se, it was just that his mouth ran and ran and ran more than his legs did, sometimes - how was he supposed to be expected to remember everything that he said? "I don't 'ave memory loss," he insists, clasping his hands together between his legs. "I just talk a lot. Say a lotta stuff I don't remember sayin'." He did have a lot of head trauma as an adolescent, but that was when he was, like, ten to... well, twenty-two, and he's an adult now, and the only head trauma he's got now is the normal footballer sort - taking headers. And if Dani and Sam and Bumber and Richard don't have head trauma, neither does Jamie.

ricky’s  already  got  her  arms  crossed  over  her  chest,  so  she  can’t  do  that  for  dramatic  effect.    yet  the  look  on  her  face  says  it  all:  mouth  slightly  open,  the  frown  clear  on  her  features,  eyes  displaying  a  mixture  of  frustration  and  complete  awe  at  what  he’d  said.    ricky  sighs  out  her  annoyance,  one  hand  rising  and  gesturing  vaguely  at  jamie.    she  steps  away  from  his  side,  picking  up  a  discarded  bucket  of  ice  and  making  her  way  to  the  sink.    “ i’m  adding  a  memory  loss  test  to  your  weekly  checkups,  jamie.    it  might  provide  clarity  for  the  both  of  us. ”

The gardener did not even introduce herself to the new au pair. She barely acknowledged her at all. Simply treated her as if she'd always been there. The others just assumed they'd already met, which, if she were honest, was how the au pair felt when she first saw the young woman.

Two Aces: Part 2

Word count: 612

Timeline: Season 1

Warnings: None

Summary: Takes place a week after Two Aces. Jamie’s perspective is explored under the cut.

Coach Lasso had made the announcement that morning: Jamie is no longer at Richmond.

Man City had loaned him out to Richmond, but suddenly, just like that, they’d recalled him. Dani hadn’t even gotten the chance to say goodbye.

Dani’s an emotional guy by nature. He cries a lot. So it’s no surprise that he’s in his apartment, thinking of Jamie, with silent tears rolling down his cheeks.

He’s trying to stay positive… but he misses his friend. Pulling out his phone, Dani smiles weakly as he types out a text to Jamie.

Text: Amigo! I miss you so much… I wish you were still here. I know you will do amazing at Man City, but I’m going to miss my fellow striker. 😢

Jamie doesn’t reply for the first couple of hours. That’s okay; he’s probably super busy getting re-adjusted to Manchester.

So busy, in fact, that he doesn’t reply for three days straight. Eventually, Dani can’t take it anymore and sends another text.

Text: Jamie! Just reaching out to make sure you are okay. I have not heard from you. Still miss you like crazy! ❤️

No reply.

A week passes. Dani tries again.

Text: Hola, Jamie! I watched the Man City match last night and saw you score on that incredible header! I owe you a drink now! Let me know when you want to meet up. ❤️

Another week passes with no response. And then another. And then another.

Dani slowly starts to realize that Jamie probably got a new phone — or maybe his phone stopped working somehow. He still misses Jamie every day, but his optimism never wavers. He knows he’ll see Jamie again — somehow, some way, someday.

He stops reaching out, simply because he doesn’t want to bother Jamie. But he never stops thinking of him. He keeps reading his interviews, watching his matches, and dreaming of their reunion. A part of him is sad, but a bigger part of him truly believes he and Jamie will be friends again.

Only time will tell.

Jamie’s Perspective

Fucking Lasso had dumped him.

Jamie had JUST started getting used to Richmond. He’d JUST started to get comfortable around his teammates. He’d JUST started actually fucking enjoying himself.

“You’re going back to Man City. They recalled you,” Rebecca had said, her tone calm and even. Jamie had wanted to scream.

Now, he’s sitting in the Man City locker room. It’s bigger than Richmond’s. The walls are painted a light blue instead of a dark blue.

There’s no BELIEVE sign above the door.

His dad’s in the crowd. Waiting, watching, looking for any possible mistakes to tear Jamie apart for.

Man City’s his original team — his favorite team. It’ll always hold a special place in Jamie’s heart. But after spending so much time at Richmond, everything has changed here, and nothing feels quite… right.

His phone buzzes in his hand, snapping him out of his daze. He looks down, his heart clenching in his chest as he reads the text from Dani.

Text: Jamie! Just reaching out to make sure you are okay. I have not heard from you. Still miss you like crazy! ❤️

Jamie swallows thickly… and then, taking a deep breath, he clicks Dani’s contact and presses the “Hide Alerts” button. There’s no time for distractions. He and Dani were never really friends, were they?

Except… deep down, he knows they were. And there’s not a single person on the Man City team that brings an energy even close to Dani’s. But Jamie knows he has to move on, and the best way to do that is to ignore Dani.

Fuck Ted Lasso. And fuck Richmond.
