Malaysians Defend Faiz Subri After Critics Mocked His "Broken English" At The FIFA Awards

Faiz Subri had presented his acceptance speech in English after receiving the FIFA Puskas Award in Zurich yesterday. 

It's a proud day for Malaysians when Kedah-born Mohd Faiz Subri won the FIFA Puskas Award, making history as the first Asian footballer to receive the goal-of-the-year accolade

Faiz, who plays for the Malaysian Super League side Penang, was catapulted into international stardom when a video of him scoring a physics-defying goal from a swerving free kick went viral in February last year. The 29-year-old striker received almost 60% of the accumulated votes, beating out Brazil's Marlone and Venezuela's Daniuska Rodriguez for the award.

Faiz had some adorably awkward moments on the podium as he fumbled with his phone in search of his acceptance speech, which he presented in English  

The fact that he spoke in English, apparently, did not sit well with certain quarters. Some thought he should've presented the speech in Malay, while other took their criticism further by mocking his "facepalm English".

In fact, many of the world's best footballers such as Lionel Messi and Marouane Fellaini are not fluent in English

In a post that has gone viral, Facebook user Joe Najib pointed out that even "some of Malaysia's greatest achievers on the global stage don't have a strong command of the language"

As for why he did not speak in Malay at the awards show, Faiz has clarified that FIFA only allowed relevant football players to speak in English, Spanish, or French

This is due to the fact that the football association only provides interpreters for the aforementioned languages during the ceremony, which is telecast live around the world.

Gol yang banyak disebut sebagai tendangan kalajengking tersebut terjadi ketika Arsenal menghadapi Crystal Palace di 2016-2017 lalu dalam pertandingan lanjutan ajang kompetisi Liga Inggris.

Seperti ang dilansir oleh situs FIFA, Olivier Giroud mencetak gol dengan sentuhan akrobatiknya lewat tumit dari kaki kirinya, setelah menerima umpan silang dari Alexis Sanchez. Didalam laga yang berlangsung 1 Januari 2017 lalu tersebut Olivier Giroud membawa The Gunners menang dengan skor akhir 2-0 atas Palace.

Pemain yang berasal dari Perancis ini mengaku sedikit beruntung dengan gol indah itu. Olivier Giroud menyatakan bahwa itu adalah gol terbaik yang pernah dia ciptakan selama kariernya.

Dia lantas menjadi pemain yang berasal dari Perancis pertama yang berhasil masuk tiga besar gol terbaik versi FIFA. Olivier Giroud bersaing dengan dua pesaing lainnya yakni pemain muda putri Venezuela Deyna Castellanos dan penjaga gawang Oscarine Masuluke, yang sukses mencetak gol tidak kalah indahnya.

Castellanos adalah pemain putri kedua Venezuela didalam dua tahun berturut-turut, yang sukses menembus tiga besar. Dia dinominasikan untuk golnya di wilayah dekat garis tengah lapangan saat mereka melawan Kamerun di ajang Piala Dunia putri U-17 yang berlangsung di Yordania tahun lalu.

Pemain yang berusia 18 tahun tersebut mengikuti jejak kompatriotnya Daniuska Rodriguez, yang golnya masuk dalam tiga besar tahun lalu. Namun, dia harus kalah dari tendangan bebas pemain Malaysia Mohd Faiz Subri yang sukses dibukukan dari jarak 35 meter.

Pemain timnas Afrika Selatan, Masuluke adalah penjaga gawang pertama dan pemain pertama dari Afrika yang ini masuk tiga besar untuk tendangan saltonya di menit terakhir spektakulernya untuk Baroka FC saat mereka berhadapan dengan Orlando Pirates tahun lalu.

Pemenang penghargaan yang dinamai dengan nama almarhum dari kapten timna Hungaria, Ferenc Puskas, akan diputuskan oleh publik lalu diumumkan di perayaan pemain tahunan FIFA yang berlangsung di London pada tanggal 23 Oktober nanti. LiputanSkor.top, Zurich – Gelandang Penang FA Mohd Faiz Subri dinobatkan sebagai peraih penghargaan FIFA Puskas Award 2016 di Zurich, Swiss, Selasa (10/1/2017) dinihari WIB. Ia mengalahkan dua pesaingnya, yakni Marlone dan Daniuska Rodriguez.

Dalam pemungutan suara Puskas Award, Faiz mendapatkan 59,46%. Sangat jauh dari dua pesaingnya Marlone yang meraih 22,86% suara dan Daniuska dengan 10,01%. Sedangkan 7,68% suara lain tidak memilih salah satu dari tiga pemain tersebut.

“Alhamdulillah untuk berkat-Nya bahwa saya diberikan penghargaan prestisius ini, FIFA Puskas Award. Jujur, itu tak pernah terlintas dalam pikiran saya bahwa saya akan tiba di level ini dan berdiri sejajar dengan para pemain hebat dunia di tempat ini,” ungkap Faiz dalam pidatonya di FIFA.com.

“Di sini saya ingin berterima kasih kepada manajemen tim Penang, semua pelatih, rekan setim, staf, PFAM, keluarga saya, dan masyarakat Malaysia khususnya warga Penang, dan semua orang di seluruh dunia. Untuk FAM dan FMLLP, saya berutang banyak kepada Anda karena mengirimkan gol saya untuk dievaluasi,” Faiz menambahkan.

Untuk hadir di FIFA Puskas Award, Faiz terbang ke Zurih bersama istrinya, Norzawanis Hashim, dan dua anaknya, Afik Fayyadh dan Muhammad Aqil Zayyan. Ia pun berkesempatan bertemu dengan idolanya, yakni Cristiano Ronaldo, yang terpilih sebagai Pemain Terbaik FIFA 2016.

Marlone projeta 2017 no Corinthians e faz campanha por prêmio da Fifa - A Notícia do Dia

O meia Marlone é um dos concorrentes ao prêmio Puskas, honraria concedida pela Fifa ao autor do gol mais bonito da temporada. Na véspera da cerimônia de premiação a ser realizada na Suíça, o jogador fez campanha e projetou sua permanência no Corinthians em 2017.

“Quero pedir o voto do povo brasileiro”, disse Marlone em entrevista ao Sportv. “A torcida tem me ajudado muito nas redes sociais, toda a nação corintiana. Estou aqui buscando esse título para o Brasil e representando também o clube”, completou.

No final do ano passado, o Atlético-MG chegou a enviar uma proposta oficial pelo meia de 24 anos, mas a negociação não avançou. Questionado sobre seu futuro, Marlone se disse satisfeito no Corinthians e garantiu que atualmente não há possibilidade de deixar o Parque São Jorge.

“Quando você faz uma boa temporada, é normal outros clubes se interessarem, ainda mais jogando no Corinthians, uma marca muito conhecida. Mas hoje estou feliz e até agora não tem nada concreto. Meu foco está em jogar pelo Corinthians em 2017. O futuro, a Deus pertence. Mas hoje sou Corinthians”, declarou.

Marlone concorre ao prêmio Puskas pelo gol de voleio anotado diante do Cobresal, em abril, pela Copa Libertadores. A venezuelana Daniuska Rodriguez marcou contra a Colômbia pelo Sul-Americano sub-17 e o malaio Mohd Faiz Subri, do Penang, compete com um gol feito diante do Pahang.

O corintiano tenta ser o terceiro brasileiro a levar a premiação. Neymar já venceu em 2011, com o antológico gol marcado contra o Flamengo quando atuava no Santos, e Wendell Lira é o atual detentor do prêmio, pelo gol de voleio feito no Campeonato Goiano, jogando pelo Goianésia.

Assim que acabar a cerimônia realizada na Suíça, Marlone retorna ao Brasil, com previsão de chegada para o dia 11 de janeiro, exatamente a data de retorno do Corinthians aos treinamentos. Será o primeiro contato do grupo com o agora treinador Fábio Carille.
