Greetings! My sincerest hope you are all having a good day, and may the rest of your week be better regardless. Today’s flower plant thing is a Daphniphyllum macropodum of the Daphniphyllaceae family.

Apparently this plant is useful in constructive purposes and furniture making, which is really cool!
[Picture ID: A shrub consistent of many bright green flower-like segments, each with reddish-purple stems at their base, and several long thin leaves hanging from the bottom. All combined the plant gives off the appearance of a large collection of individual flowers and leaves forming one large bush. End ID]

This is an elaborate Kagami mochi (鏡餅) one of the preparations we make for the new year to invite the “Toshigami-sama” (New year God). I think most people have a more simplified version of this Kagami mochi which is purchased at a supermarket. Saying this you should put up all your New Year’s decorations between December 26th and the 28th. From long ago, mochi (rice cakes) were considered food for the gods. Here are some of the meanings of the decorations on the kagami mochi- The “strings” wrapped in gold and silver in this photo is called “Mizu-hiki” and it is for hopes to make ties with Toshigami-sama” . On top is not a mikan but a Daidai bitter orange (橙) which symbolizes the wish that the family’s bloodline will prosper from generation to generation. The leaves of the Yuzuriha (Daphniphyllum macropodum) means long life and the konbu (kelp) is happiness. It is also believed that the power of the gods reside in kagami mochi so that we can absorb some of their powers we eat the mochi at a later date.
