i just checked my timeline and bluestar is 4 (50 moons) years old at the beginning of into the wild. idk what to do lol

so my headcanon (and in my rewrite) i had the same problem with her not being “experienced” SO we don’t actually know when she became leader but i think she became leader a few moons after she became deputy, she was still runningwind’s mentor and became deputy after he’d been training for about 1 moon and then she became leader when he’d been training for about 4 moons, darkstripe was born at around the same time she became leader and she had a deputy before redtail since he didn’t have an apprentice at this point (my preference is white-eye was her deputy or thrushpelt, though if she made white-eye her deputy that could explain why graypaw thought that leaders only mentored their deputy’s kits since runningpaw is white-eye’s son, i guess sparrowpelt could work for this too)

so at this point she’s about 3 years old already

when darkstripe is 6 moons old is when longtail is born, i also headcanon that he had three siblings and 6 moons later they all become apprentices, redtail has longpaw, one of the siblings go to whitestorm, another goes to goldenflower and another goes to frostfur, darkstripe went to tigerclaw as in canon, brindleface has her first litter of kits from an unknown tom around this time but none of them make it past two moons because the famine starts, and after this is when she decides to become a permanent queen and that’s why she never has an apprentice

when longtail and his siblings become apprentices bluestar has been leader for a year and is now 4 years old

longtail’s littermates end up dying of either sickness, hunger (or both), and one of his sisters gets hit by a monster when trying to chase down prey, about four moons into longpaw’s training and darkstripe’s been a warrior for 3 moons, redtail is expecting his and runningwind’s kits and moves into the nursery and longpaw gets transferred to darkstripe to be trained by him (in canon longtail was darkstripe’s apprentice) and in about 2 moons longtail becomes a warrior

sandkit had a brother (dustkit) but he died, a moon after she’s born is when her brother dies and robinwing and fuzzypelt have their third litter of kits, naming one of them dustkit in honor of sandkit’s brother, and naming the other ravenkit, cherrykit, and chestnutkit; cherrykit and chestnutkit both die and fuzzypelt dies from hunger, sickness, and heartbreak (he’s pretty old at this point, his heart really can’t take so much stress and hurt), robinwing dies soon after him from heartbreak, when sandkit is 2 moons old and dustkit and ravenkit are a moon old is when willowpelt and whitestorm have graykit and his sister at the very tail end of the famine and sickness, but his sister is born very small and weak and ends up dying

soon after the famine, white-eye and sparrowpelt retire and ask to be named one-eye and halftail respectively, smallear had retired 6 moons earlier, and patchpelt also retires, sandkit is weened by now, so bluestar names redtail her new deputy because she knows better than anyone that matriarchs shouldn’t have to choose between having kits or being deputy, and when he’s busy runningwind happily stays with sandkit since he’s been sleeping in the nursery with them anyway, and if neither of them are available brindleface, willowpelt, or whitestorm happily watch her, she is so loved

when sandkit becomes an apprentice is also when dappletail, thrushpelt, and rosetail retire, rosetail is slightly younger than bluestar, but has developed lung problems from the sickness as well as already having hurting joints (arthritis) and it’s hard for her to do a lot of work without running out of breath or being in pain, speckletail refuses to retire even though she’s old enough and sure acts like an elder

a moon later, dustkit and ravenkit become dustpaw and ravenpaw, and then another moon later, graykit becomes graypaw half a moon later frostfur and lionheart have thornkit, cinderkit, brackenkit, and brightkit, being the first kits to be born after the famine and sickness, then a half moon later is when rusty comes to the forest and becomes firepaw

and now bluestar is approximately 5 years and 1 month old lol, which i think is close to how old she was in canon

in canon i think she dies when she’s about 8 bordering on 9 years old and in my rewrite she’s about 7-7 and a half years old

for the suffix toe- you could say they’re stealthy, or a good hunter, or good senses because “they’re always on their toes”

Thank you for clarifying! This question really comes down to how the clans believe life (and the afterlife) works. There’s lots of stories people come up with to explain the world, and the clans wouldn’t be any different; they would have beliefs about how birth works and how death works. 

For example, clans might believe in a form of reincarnation: they might believe that ancestor spirits are reborn in new bodies and that a stillborn kitten is just a body that didn’t, for whatever reason, get a spirit. They might believe that this is because the body wasn’t ready, or wouldn’t survive, and so the ancestor who might have been born into it chose not to this time. If that’s how they see the situation, they probably won’t grieve a lot, because they don’t really see it as someone being gone: they see it as a husk that went unused. Therefore, they might not see any point in naming that kitten. 

Alternatively, if the clans believe a kitten is alive more or less from conception and comes with a soul attached to the body, the idea of a stillborn kitten is more upsetting; depending on the clan’s specific belief, they might think the soul is still in the body and needs to be freed, or they might believe the soul leaves the body to go to the afterlife when it is born (like a natural death), or they might believe something else entirely–perhaps that a stillborn kitten’s soul can’t ever leave the nursery, or won’t leave until a sibling is made a warrior, or needs a particular ritual to let it go. In that kind of situation, naming the kitten might be imperative for the clan to feel they have honoured the kitten’s soul and helped it move onto the next stage or else freed it or gained its guardianship. 

What your clans believe about birth, death, life, and the afterlife is going to impact how valuable and necessary they view naming stillborn–or even live kittens–once they’re born. I hope this answers your question!

what do crowfeather, jayfeather, lionblaze, and hollyleaf look like in your canon au?

Well, I’m really messing around with parentage for the po3 arc (and a lot of other things but it’s not really solidified yet). So Crowfeather is black smoke, but that’s actually no longer relevant, because the sire to Leafpool’s kits is Mothwing! Mothwing is a chocolate spotted tabby, leaning toward golden. Lionblaze is a ginger tabby, Jayfeather is lilac spotted, and Hollyleaf...is Tawnypelt’s kid! She’s solid black, possibly with a lil ginger somatic mutation to represent a holly berry. I would make her tortie but I love her very very much which means she’s gotta be trans. c:

hawkfrost doesn’t but mudclaw does! he has three kits leaftail, antpelt, and kestrelflight!

isn’t darkstripe a little young to be brindleface’s mate in your au? i mean she’s older than his mom.

surprisingly not really and besides the whole point of it is that it’s SUPPOSED to be kind of weird

willowpelt had darkstripe when she was only a year and two and half moons old because thistleclaw manipulated her into thinking she HAD to have kits for the good of the clan and it was basically her duty to have kits and her duty to be his mate

and brindleface is only like two to three moons older than willowpelt, meaning she’s not even a year and a half older than darkstripe, and my limit is that 2 and a half to 3 years is when the age difference becomes mMMMMMMMMMM (IF they weren’t the cat’s mentor, if they were their mentor and only like a year older than them it’s weird) (which by the way, ivypool is only at the most two years older than fernsong)

brindleface didn’t become a queen until after darkpaw was an apprentice, so she didn’t like look after him when he was a kit or anything, not to mention thistleclaw was very defensive of who was around darkkit so he barely had like any interaction with most of the clan while he was a kit

and then he didn’t even become her “mate” until way after he had been a warrior, and he only did so because he just wanted kits and he took advantage of a mourning queen who had lost her first litter and possibly her original mate since no one knows who the father of those kits were, and since she decided to become a permanent queen she felt like she HAD to have more kits (and wanted more kits)

darkstripe’s entire life is him being raised by thistleclaw, then finding out what thistleclaw did to willowpelt and almost to spottedleaf, and then his mother becoming mates with whitestorm, aka his father’s son, aka his half brother, so like his family’s kinda weird even though no incest occurs darkstripe is both willowpelt’s new mate’s half brother and his half brother’s son is ALSO darkstripe’s half brother

whitestorm and his kits (graystripe, graystripe’s dead sister, and sootfur, sorreltail, and rainwhisker) share a half brother in darkstripe

so darkstripe is fucked up and angry and becomes manipulative and evil and full of anger and hate just like his father, all because of his father (and because he was mentored by and looked up to tigerclaw)
