Been rereading way too many fic of Guardian recently and because I drew ShenYi sleeping with Xiaoxuan and I thought that I could also draw Zhao Yunlan and Daqing sleeping

The expressionless mask Zhao Yunlan had been maintaining, calm to the point of creepiness, finally gave way. Utterly exhausted, he let go of Daqing, letting the fat cat drop to the ground.

Then, with no concern for their surroundings, he wrapped his arms around the black-cloaked figure, who was feared and revered by all, and pulled him into a hug. In a hoarse rasp, he said,

"Just come home.”

Shen Wei's smile disappeared. Head lowered, he said nothing.

"Shen Wei!" Zhao Yunlan grabbed him. "Don't play dumb. I'm telling you to just come home with me! Say something !"

Zhao Yunlan let go of him and stopped moving.

Shen Wei stood right in front of him, unwilling to turn around and face him.

Teeth gritted, Zhao Yunlan snarled, "I want to fucking drag you home and handcuff you so that you'll stay put."

Zhao Yunlan gazed back at him, fighting to contain the restless fury in his heart. "I don't believe in that shit. Just come home with me, and we can figure everything else out from there. Even if we can't be together, you have to at least be somewhere I can see you every day, so I can rest easy...”

\o For the ask game: Guardian fic - operation get to know the ghost slayer

Hiiiiiii :DDD Wheeee yay I love that one!!!

The full title of that fic is probably going to be Cats, Calligraphy and Conversation, or Operation Get to Know the Ghost Slayer :) It's a series of snapshots in pre novel canon, showing Zhao Yunlan slowly but surely getting to know the Ghost Slayer and building their relationship up into the solid partnership we get to know in early canon. It's him noticing all these little things about this seemingly unapproachable ghostly warrior, seeing that he is kind and that he is thoughtful, that he has likes and wants, that he cares about things, that he is a whole genuine person, as much as anyone else on the SID team, and then making the effort to meet him halfway. This fic is intended as a celebration of the relationship Weilan have in early novel canon, which is to me (so far) truly one of the most touching things about the novel. Even when ZYL doesn't know yet who the Ghost Slayer or Shen Wei is, and doesn't know yet how deeply in love he will fall with with all versions of him later, they are already team, they are partners, and this fic tells the story of how that came to be.

I'll give you (what I'm planning to make) the official summary as a little snippet:

“Do you think he’s lonely?” Daqing looks up from his bowl of fish, ass planted in the middle of the coffee table. “What are you talking about?” Zhao Yunlan fiddles with the hem of his t-shirt, pulling his feet more fully up onto the couch, but he meets the cat’s questioning gaze head-on. “The Ghost Slayer,” he clarifies. “Do you think he’s lonely?” or, Zhao Yunlan, newly appointed chief of the Special Investigations Department, feeling his way around the edges of a budding partnership.

Hey! I finally finished the first book of Guardian! Wow! I wasn't sure if I was going to continue after the first book, but the last couple chapters really pulled the plot threads together! Also Daqing looking for Zhao Yunlan for five centuries!!! What a noble cat! 🥺

daqing is indeed a very noble kitty <3 how did you enjoy zhan yunlan's extremely heroic work life vs his sad and lonely personal life and identity crisis?

not to be that guy but yeah, the first volume becomes really entertaining after you know the story, and you start to get every "it almost looked familiar...". the first time i read the novel i already watched the drama so i enjoyed it a lot (i think it's a priest thing, since it's also like this in faraway wanderers). it gets better right in book 2 tho, many many good weilan scenes in there! and i promise the plot gets neatly tied up, it will make sense sooner than you think (:

not to spoil anything, but my second favourite part is the arc called "primordial past", which is placed between "merit brush" and "lantern of the guardian" (unlabeled in the seven seas edition but it will be clear what i'm referring to). i consider it a prelude to the shen san extra which is my absolute favourite danmei novel part ever. even if you don't finish the book i recommend reading it, it feels like a bedtime story to me and it's heartwrenching.

also as an aside, if you decide to finish the book i recommend reading wisława szymborska's poetry, they're all exceptionally good but there are some that seems written especially for weilan!

"Sorry?" Zhao Yunlan glanced at him. "Sorry for what? Deception? Or deception? Or maybe deception?"

Shen Wei was silent.

Off to one side, Daqing pretended to lick his paws. His eyes shone with excitement as he watched the drama unfold.

maybe it’s just recency bias bc I read guardian more recently than tgcf buuut I definitely agree with you on weilan > hualian like oh my god I can’t even describe how feral I get over these two and their goddamn lore - ahh I want to say more but idk how far you are into it/if you care about spoilers/etc

SAME!!! I don’t know if I’m more hyped by it as well because I’ve literally not picked up any Guardian spoilers so I’m really invested in the fact that I’m pretty sure Zhao Yunlan is the Mountain God and I’m so ready for him to get woken up. (I’m almost a quarter way through vol 2 but I’ll definitely be posting loads more and feel free to come back and scream with me once I’ve finished vol 3).

Also Guardian has Daqing who is S tier side kick material.

Fun fact: I don’t believe in recency bias 😉

Daqing wandered out into the living room once he heard the chorus of goodbyes, only to catch the tail end of Shen Wei being swept out the door by a too-excited Zhao Yunlan. For no reason that would make any sense to him, Ye Zun was sat upon the sofa, sucking his teeth like like a grotesque.

Daqing flounced by, his tail swishing affectionately at Ye Zun's leg, for the express purposes of leaving as many obnoxious strands of black cat hair all over his nicely-pressed trousers as he could. "Well, who pissed in your—"

He stopped. Cocked his head. Did Ye Zun eat cereal? Upon further consideration, Daqing had never witnessed him eat a meal of any humanly balanced nutritional proportion in his life. He decided upon a strategy and implemented it. "—collection of demon bones or something?"

Ye Zun only scowled at the preening cat, which Daqing had decided was a victory in his pocket. Smug in the way only a cat could be, he needled him further. "You're really that broken up about your brother dating, huh?" he asked casually, rubbing himself unabashedly now upon his pant leg. To his delight, it was covered in his wretched dander now.

Satisfied and feeling extremely proud of his accomplishment in such a short time (sartorial destruction, emotional damage), he jumped up on the couch, settling beside the distraught Ye Zun, a fat black paw laid sympathetically upon his thigh. "Don't worry. I mean, really, what's the life expectancy from such a reckless person? His baseline personality trait is annoying at best, so who knows? There's a good chance he'd die soon. Maybe. Probably from someone choking him. Hey! Maybe that could be you!"

When he looked back at Ye Zun, he could undoubtedly see the tautness gone from his lips, and the faintest hint of a smile growing there. "Good cat," Ye Zun said, almost kindly, and pat the cat's head in the most hamhanded manner that had Daqing grousing and attempting a poorly-landed swipe. But Ye Zun had already gotten up to wander into the kitchen, humming some deraged, delighted tune, thoroughly invigorated at the mere posisbility of Zhao Yunlan's death, specifically by choking.

WeiLan non-fantasy neighbours au

Where Yunlan and Daqing move next to Shen Wei's apartment and Shen wei regularly sees them delivery in food and the garbage can full of take out box trash and he can't do it anymore.

He's genuinely worried about their gut and it doesn't help that Yunlan is a cutie who shoots him the sweetest smile with a lollipop in his mouth and occasionally winks at him as if Shen Wei doesn't see the next batch of take out containers.

It gets even worse when he realises Yunlan comes home at the weirdest fucking times, sometimes tiredly dragging himself home and sometimes even looking worse for wear.

He still manages to shoot a smile at Shen Wei though, even if it is followed by a wince by the bruise forming at his chin.

Shen wei worries that Yunlan may be in an underground fighting club until he sees him investigating a case in his University, that certainly puts things in perspective for him.

But doesn't take away the worry he feels for Yunlan.

The one good thing that comes out of the horrifying murder case is that it gives Shen Wei to finally talk to Yunlan more than just smiles across the hallway and for a moment he feels guilty for it but then Zhao Yunlan is talking to him and -flirting- with him and he quickly forgets the guilt.

From the next day on, he starts packing some lunches for Yunlan and his roommate with an excuse that it's a thanks for working at the case in the university. Yunlan does quirk his eyebrows at Shen Wei but accepts the package nonetheless before disappearing into his home without Shen Wei even getting a peak in but all Shen Wei can remember is the way those eyes gazed at him, calculating as they did a sweep over him before getting a glint in them and saying a very bright but definitely tired "Thank you."

Shen Wei immediately turns on his heels and disappears into his own apartment before his legs can give out. His face burning as his mind replayed the thanks that Yunlan said to him.

He walked to his fridge, pulling out everything and he thought of what to cook for tomorrow.

Reaction to Guardian (Chapter 2-Chapter 10)

okay so i had to stop myself from binge reading so that i could make this post, but i think i failed.

okay i'm not even gonna lie, i kinda really love guo changcheng. he makes serious situations so funny and i feel kinda bad for him. ik he would be soOOO annoying irl, but in the book he kinda heightens the experience without intruding on zhao yunlan and shen wei, lmao.

i re-looked at the cover for volume 1, of course, and my first impression of shen wei was that he was apprehensive or concerned, but now he seems a little in love/shy type of concerned. idk, after reading, their expressions seem a lot more soft.

the python lady, whose name i forgot. wait. erm. ZHU HONG that was it. okay so first of all the period jokes are crazy. at first i was abt to say why tf would you spend so much money on making her learn about tech stuff, but then i realized this was based in china and idk how much universities cost there. whoops. ALSO ALSO WHY THE FUCK IS SHE FLIRTING WITH ZHAO YUNLAN?? HELLO?? bro was actually disgusted and she should've been ashamed. that being said, i do quite like her. i think if there are scenes with her in the future, they won't be that bad.

lin jing- whose name i only remember because of jin ling- is super kewl. idk, bro just seems like a wingman. i think i imagine him differently in my head because of jin ling.... so he has no glasses and is kinda short in my head... but all is well, yk? i like his- again, i binge read, so sorry if this is offensive/incorrect- monk/buddhist motif.

the fight scenes are so well made, holy shit. and so are the illustrations! like omg, they were so fun to read. i love love love fight scenes and with guo changcheng it definitely wasn't AS serious, but yk. obv we love shen wei being a badass and daqing being daqing.

the illustrations are such bangers as well, i love the style. especially the one where zhao yunlan was holding the dagger in his mouth and holding the talisman? dont ask me why, but i love when characters do that. it feels so badass to me.

i'm so excited to read the rest. i'm not sure if zhao yunlan's memory altering technique thing will work on shen wei, because he is a little sus. meaning that he definitely has a hidden past and is like secretly a demon or guardian of zhao yunlan or some shit, yk? i have the covers of the rest of the novels at my disposure, or whatever the fuck, and i can see that they have long hair, which was kinda strange to me because it seems like a modern type au so far?

oh yeah quick interlude: love the fact that you can shoot ghosts with bullets. that seems so fucking badass to me. this novel is so badass, dont ask me why

anyway i really enjoyed the little kissie that zhao yunlan gave shen wei. i wonder what their future dynamic will be?

so excited to read the rest, i highly recommend if you like good fight scenes!! can't wait to unravel the mystery.

oh, p.s: li qian (?) wasn't the one who died, i was wrong. but she was supposed to die- or so i think rn, idk the twists. ah, maybe mxtx has shapen me into expecting something so out there, but with jun wu and nie huaisang and luo binghe, things aren't really what they seem, i'm SURE of it.

i love guardian so far, and i'm sure you will too!

Summary:

Daqing feels the rapid puffs of the Ghost Slayer’s panicked choking gasps against his cheek, ruffling his whiskers. The smell of blood and rot is sharp and sour on the man’s breath. He just needs to find a way to calm him down, to get him back to himself enough to talk to Zhao Yunlan on the phone in a minute, to tell them both what to do. If nothing else, Daqing thinks, in between jokes and harsh words, he has at least always been good at comforting people. After all, what could be more comforting than the soft fur of a cat?
