I'm very much Team Data has always had his own android emotions. He just cannot really understand them since he is limited by languages of species that experience emotions in a vastly different way than he does.

He experiences his own form of love and affection for his friends, colleagues, for spot

So when you enter a committed relationship/partnership the term Queerplatonic best describes it, since your relationship is unique and specially tailored to the way you two experience love and affection towards each other

In the beginning, you are friends

Maybe you are a scientist and at some point you notice that, even tho he always denies it, he must experience some kind of emotions

You help him explore these, understand his emotions better, categorise them and relate his experiences to human and other species‘ concepts of emotions, so that he can better communicate them to others

Naturally, you grow very close in the process

You become the first person he goes to for advice when he doesn’t understand a social construct, behaviour, etc.

You seek him out for comfort when you are struggling with something, since he never judges you for anything

You never have to be ashamed of your feelings with Data, and he always tries his best to be there for you and help you out

“Are you in need of advice, or do you want me to only listen to you?“ is the first question he always asks

After a bit of practice, he also gives surprisingly good hugs

Data notices that in some circumstances, hugs seem to have a positive effect on his neurological functions - he just hasn't figured out in what way yet.

You are not really a big fan of his romantic endeavour with Jenna Wilson

Not because you experience any feelings of jealousy, but because she just left a bad relationship, and you are worried that she uses Data as a rebound

which turns out to be pretty much true, and when she leaves Data, feeling utterly unlovable and unable to have a relationship, you are there for him

You challenge his ideas of relationship hierarchy that he has adapted from the human source material he has been studying

You make him realise that just because he does not experience romantic attraction, it doesn’t mean that he will never be loved or experience feelings of love himself

Data realises that his friends very much love him, that you love him and that he feels something akin to (platonic) love for all of you

He realises that while he considers Geordi to be his best friend, he will always seek a romantic connection with someone and make them their first priority

He can never get the closeness and the commitment that he realises he has been trying to experience out of this relationship

You are different in that aspect

Bonus points if you are on the aro and/or ace spectrum

You become each other's first priority

You refer to each other as a partner

If you are a physically affectionate person, hugs and cuddles become your thing; if not, then not

If you say something looks nice, he will paint it for you

Data also found that he can express his emotions well through art, so expect at least one VERY abstract painting handed to you with the words „this reminds me of you I hope you understand it“

You never share quarters, simply because it makes no sense. Data doesn’t sleep, you very much do, and it would be insanely boring for him if your quarters were unusable for him for extended periods of time every day while you are unconscious

But during the day you spent a lot of time together in one of your quarters

You each do your own work or hobbies in the other's presence,

He paints while you play with Spot, go over research files or do any other hobbies of yours

talking about everything and anything, or simply enjoying each other's company

Apart from your "Data's emotions" project, you sometimes do scientific studies together

Especially if your specialty is kybernetics, they more often than not revolve around Data himself

If you have another specialty, your combined knowledge often leads to new approaches and findings.

You fiercely defend him against anyone who doubts him being a person, or threatens his autonomy in any way

You get into a lot or arguments with Dr. Pulaski over her unfair treatment of Data

Data really appreciates you for it. It makes him feel loved and reassures him that he is worth just as much as any other person

The whole "I am not less perfect than Lore" thing breaks your heart

Even tho he doesn't admit it to other people, the uncertainty of whether he was a less perfect version of Lore, since he was less human-like, really bothered him

So when he comes back from the encounter with Dr. Soong, he is the Data version of really excited to tell you that he is, in fact, not less perfect than Lore

As soon as Data starts referring to you as his partner, the whole crew is invested in the nature of your relationship

Riker and Troi get it the most since they have a similarly unique relationship with each other, just with very different parameters (a lot more sexual and romantic attraction involved)

Still, since Riker thinks A LOT about sex and romance,e he asks you and Data a thousand questions about what your relationship is like before he gets it. He wants to know all the details and is a bit disappointed when there are no spicy ones, since he is pretty much a gossip girl

Vulcan crew members do not bat an eye since their concept of T'hy'la is not limited to romantic partners but includes all kinds of love, and I imagine the Betazoid „Imzadi“ to be similar

I like to imagine that QPRs are a well-known relationship type in Star Trek since it’s the future, but canon doesn’t give that away, so I‘ll leave the human crewmembers' reactions out
