Book Review - The Bladed Faith by David Dalglish
Tumblr media
Remember how I’d be rushing to review an ARC the night before it got published, and in one case, the next day? Well, this book was published in April of last year so it’s fully available already if anyone wants to check it out. >_>
I requested the ARC myself because the book was tagged with f/f and while it does have some, I wouldn’t read it for that, just to get that out of the way. It involves a side character and a quite minor character, so not much of a storyline.
The book itself is a fairly formulaic epic fantasy about a small kingdom attacked by a larger empire and the people and gods who fight back, including the young orphaned prince. The concept of living, present gods is probably the one thing that stands out for me, it pays off in a surprising twist that took a long time to build, but I’m not sure it was worth the whole 85% of slow going before.
Both my questions of “why is this paced so oddly with so much detail?” and “why are we getting so many character POVs?” are answered by that twist but I dunno if I’d recommend it to people who aren’t huge fans of the genre. Or of really detailed action scenes, lol, there are many, elaborately described fights, and I’m sure there’s an audience for that, just not me.

Book Review: A Dance of Cloaks
Tumblr media
Title: A Dance of Cloaks
Author: David Dalglish
Series: Shadowdance #1
Publication Date: October 8, 2013
Pages: 448
My Rating: 1 out of 5 stars
This is a real adult fantasy novel with its own universe, list of characters, events to keep track of, magic, swords, and other elements that make up a genre that I love. I was really excited to read this one because the cover is really cool and I was intrigued by the summary. I thought I would love this one, but I did not. In fact, I really disliked this book.
Before I get into it, let me start off with what I did like. One of the only things I liked about the novel was the main character Aaron. He starts off as this kid who does everything his father tells him, but we see a metamorphosis throughout the story. He starts to find himself and decides to take a different path from that set by his father. Plus, he was adorable and I loved reading his sections of the story.
Unfortunately, that was all I liked because the rest of it was saturated in the author’s portrayal of women that I absolutely hated. Yes, women were treated horribly throughout history. However, this is a fantasy novel, so the author could have literally left all of that out. Now, I have read plenty of fantasy novels that I loved where women aren’t treated the best, but there was a balance to it. There were female characters who faced horrible things, but others who didn’t. In this one, every single female character was either victimized, there was an attempt to victimize, or there was a huge possibility of them being victimized. There are so many scenes where women are being raped, they are referred to in a derogatory manner, or seen as something evil or useless based solely on the fact that they are women. This novel was saturated in it to the point that sections of this were coming up constantly. Even the female characters who are warriors themselves are treated like tools, are raped, or seen as seductresses that had everything coming to them. I felt uncomfortable reading a lot of these sections throughout the book. So, if rape, attempted sexual abuse of a child, or the general mistreatment of women are any of your triggers, I would definitely not recommend reading this. I got to the point where I was so frustrated that I just sped through the last thirty or so pages.
Overall, I was really disappointed with this book and the way that the author executed the plot. I will definitely not be reading the next one.

My mind fills in the gaps but they often end up being wrong. Especially with David Dalglish. I didn't realize Zusa was POC until he said it. Like, they always focused on her killing everyone with daggers and just being extremely flexible and savage, I DID NOT REALISE SHE WAS POC UTIL HE SAID IT TO MY FACE.

I got curious and made this. Which do you see when you read?

ARC Review - The Sapphire Altar
ARC Review – The Sapphire Altar
Hello, everyone! It seems like it has been forever since I’ve written and posted a review. There have been so many annual wrap-ups, ‘best of’ lists, and New Year’s posts recently that there just hasn’t been much time for anything else. I’m looking forward to things slowing down again a bit now that the year is underway. Now let’s dive into my first review of 2023, The Sapphire Altar by David…

Just finished reading A Dance Of Cloaks by David Dalglish.  This has been on my to read list for a few years now so I finally gave it a shot.
The first in the Shadowdance series, and I wasn’t overly impressed.  It reminded me of Brent Weeks’ Night Angel Trilogy.  Especially the first book.
I will continue to read this series.  Most likely not back to back, though.

Do you guys know how hard it is to read a book or a series and find that it HAS NO FANDOM!?
No fanfic
No one talking about it on tumblr or Twitter (aside from the author)
No one to gush with over what just happened.
It's absolutely torturous.
