Movie Review | The Empty Man (Prior, 2020)

While this isn’t explicitly about the internet, I can’t help but read this as an attempt to capture certain anxieties around online behaviour, and the fear of losing loved ones to something this intangible. I suppose which real life parallel you read onto this will depend on the political or cultural context you approach it from. But unlike the real online world, the aesthetic here is gloomier, closer to creepypasta or a certain strain of horror movie than the gaudy aesthetic of online hysteria and modern conspiracy theories.

While the runtime might seem off putting on paper, I think the movie benefits from its willingness to linger in its particular mood and in a sense of narrative negative space that evokes the online void from which creepypasta arises. (Think of it as the loading time between the pages as you click further and further along in an online rabbit hole.) And I think James Badge Dale is well cast as the lead, as he has a sturdy, competent quality that the movie nicely undermines. Making him an ex-cop is also a smart decision, as his investigative skills provide a credible sense of narrative momentum as the plot thickens and goes in unexpected directions. I am not in love with the ending, which feels clumsy in ways that are uncharacteristic of the movie as a whole, but I think the journey to get there is quite engaging.

lost boys reactions to you putting on every bra you own (cuz I just did this)

the sun is starting to rise, so the boys are coming back to the cave after feeding. star wanted to stay with you, something about a 'girl's night' being long overdue, so the boys just left you to it.

after laddie had gone to bed, the boys were just burning the last of their energy when they heard hushed cheering and a mixture of giggles and gasps of breath. at first, they thought you two were having sex, since the boys didn't really know what a girls night entailed.

but when paul peeled back the lacy curtain, the sight of you leaning on the bed and fanning yourself while star was holding a multitude of different kinds of bras was extremely unexpected. the look on his face only made you laugh harder, which made the layer of bras and bralettes feel tighter.

of course, they were confused. what on earth gave you the idea to do that? obviously your chest looked a lot bigger than it usually did, and when you tried to put the rest of the bras on, it felt stiffer and tighter. eventually, you stopped at ten, coming to the conclusion that you would get too sweaty to put the rest on.

star and you found it hilarious, marko was a little confused but he had the spirit, paul was weirded out by how stiff it felt even though he loved tits, dwayne was a little surprised by how many kinds of bras existed but helped you get them off, and david let you lie against his chest when he unclasped the last one and your boobs were free.

in the end, you had several marks and outlines from the layers of underwear on your skin the next day, and laddie was extremely confused why you and star kept giggling the next morning.

Seeing a lot of posts in the tag from people who don't seem to recognize that while it's true that Robby handled the David situation badly especially in his conversation with McKay, that's literally the point and is consistent with him several times in the episode not handling interactions in the way he should/would normally because he can barely keep it together right now (not saying it's okay obviously but hardly cause for a serious judgment on his moral character)
