no because it’s really really important to me that in a world where we’re so used to the heroes punching and shooting their way to victory, thunderbolts* went out of its way to show us that the void is still very much a part of bob, and bob is their friend, so they’re going to accept every facet of who he is and give him a soft place to land, even if that means they’ll have to be the ones to pull him back from the darkness every single time. because that’s what friends family will do for each other, no questions asked.

Movie Review | Rage to Kill (Winters, 1987)

Less fun than a movie where Oliver Reed kills a guy with a helicopter’s tail rotor should be. At one point Reed sits up in a bed where he’d presumably been having a threesome with two babes and starts shouting a racial slur for the Vietnamese. There are no Vietnamese in this movie set in the Caribbean. I’m assuming Reed wasn’t given a full shooting script. He also does an American accent for some reason.

Anyway, there is enough incident and stupidity that this is probably enjoyable if you’re inebriated, but not energetic enough to be fun if you’re watching it sober. For some reason this decides that what an action movie about a revolution needs is a bunch of college kids running around, so this plays on parts like a boner comedy with the jokes taken out, with the requisite leering at nubile coeds that comes with the territory.

This also pretends that James Ryan, who is supposed to be a race car driver, is American, although unlike Reed he doesn’t attempt an accent and it has no bearing on his character otherwise. The only actual American in the cast is Cameron Mitchell, who I assume was contractually obligated to appear in any sufficiently crappy movie at this time. He plays a CIA field agent. It is not a convincing performance. The only one who’s convincing here is Henry Cele as the rebel leader, and you wonder why he wasn’t the main character in this movie packed with bloated alcoholics and James Ryan’s crappy ass karate moves. (This is a knock on the action direction, not on Ryan’s abilities.) But that might have resulted in something resembling a good movie, and we certainly couldn’t have that.
