Great group of artists & work in “Harlem Perspectives II” @FACTIONartProjects’ annual exhibition celebrating the wealth of artistic talent in uptown New York. Exhibition Feb.8 - March 2 Here a selection of works I chose Swipe ⬅️ Works by artists who deconstruct history through their process of art making. With their hands, a brush, or through a lens, the artists investigate, manipulate and work materials & objects that are charged with a personal and/or political narrative. While teasing, tearing & appropriating materials, the artists examine the cultural values & historical significance placed on the objects or subjects in their work. The resulting works define a new narrative revealing how the artists may find reconciliation or antipathy through the process & prompting the viewer to question preconceived notions & beliefs.  In his multi-media series, ‘In The Service of a Villian’, @CobyKennedy paints, welds, sews, films, photographs & animates his subjects in a quest to antagonize & perhaps overthrow a patriarchal society.   @KennedyYanko is fascinated by the human tendency to see objects only as they appear.  Through her large-scale metal & “skin” formations she creates a new context, changing our interaction & relationship w the objects.  @DavidCTerry manipulates ubiquitous objects like a terry cloth headband, a pair of basketball shorts, a dollar bill & with a bit of irony reveals society’s suppressed or unsaid viewpoints.   @Patrick_Alston_artist’s abstract paintings are a reflection, perhaps even a memoir of growing up in the Bronx. Patrick combines traditional techniques w graffiti gestures on hand sewn canvases deftly creating an historical patchwork w a bit of personal history hidden within each painting.   And works by @ruheemaknojia Tammy Nguyen @tammowhammo, @ElanCadiz #cobykennedy #kennedyyanko #patrickalston #davidcterry #harlemperspectivesii #factionartprojects #exhibition #gallery #harlem #opening #newyork #privateview #contemporaryart #art #arte #artlife #artlovers #artgram #artist #kunst #artsy #arthistory #blackrenaissance #harlemrenaissance #artoftheday #blackhistorymonth #contemporaryart #artadvisor #artcurator #joakimvonditmar (at Faction Art Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/Btnq2K7Fi-Y/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ikkxv4exs9cg

Read an interview with photographer @marietomanova — whose new book "New York, New York" is out now from @hatjecantzverlag — via linkinbio @metal_magazine "In a sense, a lot of my work is really about belonging, and it is also about freedom and identity. And sometimes these things sort of clash into one another. I know that I have felt incredibly free in New York City, but I've also felt really lonely and like I don't belong. And I have felt the same things when I went back to my hometown. I have felt like I don't belong. I have felt like I'm not at home. I have felt like I do not know where home is. So I think these bodies of New York work, such as 'New York New York' (2021) and the Czech work, 'It Was Once My Universe' (2018), for example, interact with one another in a very interesting way, and they reveal multiple identities that sometimes can coexist but also can sometimes bump into one another. And I wonder sometimes whether or not this is really just life. 'New York New York' is really about coming to New York to follow your dreams, and so many of these kids are really here to do just that. It's why I came as well. But I didn't even really know it at the time." Foreword by @kimletgordon Text by Thomas Beachdel. #marietomanova #marietomanovanewyork @barthouseprojects @barthouseberlin @davidcterry https://www.instagram.com/p/CVs0JDRJlAd/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hot book alert! Photographer @marietomanova is interviewed by @nadine_dinter for @loeildelaphotographie in advance of her photobook "New York, New York" — forthcoming from @hatjecantzverlag in September! "I really relate to the idea of NYC as a mythic place of coming to and becoming in," Tomanova says. "That is exactly what I did, and it is what most of the kids I meet and shoot are experiencing right now, too. And it is really special to hear those stories and to relate to that aspect of coming to and being yourself – discovering yourself, who you really are in NYC. In her foreword to the book, Kim Gordon writes about her experience coming to NYC, and it is so relatable. She mentions how she could be herself but also how it could be difficult feeling like you fit in. All these emotions. And her voice is so empowering – to see someone like Kim go through what I went through and what others who have come to NYC as part of their dreams also go through. It is so powerful to know we can become who we want to be. We can dream and become. New York City is a big city of dreams." Read the full interview via linkinbio. #marietomanova #marietomanovanewyork @barthouseprojects @barthouseberlin @davidcterry @dashwood_books @fotograf.zone #arles #rencontresarles @c24gallery @tschechisches_zentrum @rencontresarles https://www.instagram.com/p/CRrWVsbMksj/?utm_medium=tumblr

this Thursday:: THAT - reflection satisfaction - Finissage at 1st Floor Gallery & Art Space above HRD Bar presenting the works of Marc Räder, Felix Höfner & David C. Terry starts at 18:00 at Auguststrasse 2, Berlin THAT Afterparty:: Claas Brieler (Jazzanova) & selected Friends Felix Höfner is an autodidact, a builder of things and a show-off in the best sense of it. „Rohmantic“ is his topic, a play of the German words „raw“ and „romantic“. He will show several (deformed) mirrors and some autobiographical sculptures which depict him as a „Kunstnarr“, an idiot savage of arts if you will. Marc Räder has a more calm approach to art, his photographs, which are shot analog, sometimes with a pinhole camera, play with your habit of seeing by focussing and defusing certain areas in the picture. By expanding the exposure time his photos catch more than just a moment, longtimestudies of the gentrifying of landscape he calls them. David C. Terry’s works are comments on the way we live, the way we treat and relate to one another, the way we perceive the outsiders and insiders of our communities in our place in time. He transforms everyday objects such as US dollar bills or baseball caps and even his own body in order to make a statement and communicate on a relatable levels. The works that will be presented at HRD Bar have mostly never been exhibited. All three artists were showered with awards (too many to list them all here) and have shown their works in excellent galleries worldwide. #hrdbar #that #reflectionsatisfaction #finissage #artexhibition #berlin #newyork #marcräder #felixhöfner #davidcterry #claasbrieler (at HRD BAR)
