If not for the neat rows of tall pines along the highway, Timothy could have easily imagined he was driving on a distant moon.

As it was, he imagined he was driving through the Black Forest of Cold War Europe, perhaps as a spy from the Le Carre novels he so loved. His was an imagination of recreation, more than invention; and he turned to it often when his hands were doing something they remembered how to do on their own, like washing dishes or exercising or, most alarming, driving. His was a long commute, and he had scared himself many times by arriving home with plenty of enthusiasm for a new project or book or hobby, but absolutely no recollection of the drive itself.

Dusk fell quickly as he sped home, and in the dark his imagination spread its arms wide.

Of course the problem with letting your mind go wherever it wants is that it leaves your body without guidance or protection should some old demon happen upon it: and Timothy did not notice the ice on the road until it had spun him into the ditch.

The car tipped over, almost gingerly, on its side. He was not hurt. No airbags went off, not a single window had cracked: but there he was, suspended by his seatbelt. In bizarre, surreal moment, he turned off the ignition and pulled the key out. After some careful maneuvering, he was outside in the snow.

His mind had wandered far enough from his body during the drive that it took several long moments for the two to unite again properly, and when they did he realized he was very cold, especially in his feet. Pulling out his phone and seeing he did not have any service, he trudged up the incline to the road. Looking around slowly, his eyes settled on a sign he had driven past hundreds of times - dull blue and white, barely visible in that morbid grey twilight - CONCENTRATE ON DRIVING.

Looking at the sign and realizing he was actually comprehending it for perhaps the first time, he felt his mind turning outside-in like a sock fresh from the dryer. He looked down at the ground, at the old dead stalks of country grass, left over from a hot summer nearly gone from memory. He saw the wall of pines, so forbidding and stolid at a glance, but now creaking wildly in the rising storm. And he looked out into the deep grey and blue of the storm itself, into the swirls of snow and wind that covered everything else and made the world far more vast, and much more small than it had ever seemed before: and in that moment, when a passingly familiar world became menacingly intimate with him, Timothy saw the ghost.

The ghost stood across the road, probably a hundred feet away from Timothy. He could not see anything else at that distance: the snow was too thick. But the ghost, or his outline anyways, stood out almost plainly. It was not darker, or brighter, than the snow and wind around it, or even of any distinct shape. It began slowly approaching Timothy but stopped, still some distance away, in the middle of the highway. Timothy had the impression it was stooping to look at something on the pavement, and realized the ghost was looking at the ice patch he had driven into. Before he knew what he was doing, he found himself approaching the spot himself.

The black ice was covered in a thin, gritty dusting of snow. The ghost wiped some of it away with an indistinct gesture, and Timothy saw his own reflection clearly in the smooth ice.

There was now no light which would have made this possible. Streetlights were a fantasy themselves in this rural country. The last natural light had finally fled west, to lands far out of mind. Yet Timothy saw his face illuminated by a pale sidelight, and bent to see if he could find its source in the reflection.

It came from the ghost, but only in the reflection. Its skin imparted a white-blue aura, so faint that it seemed to diminish and fade when Timothy looked directly at it. He returned his eyes to his own form, staring back at him.

His reflection was him, but not him; his beard was much longer, his skin weathered around harder-set features. His reflection's eyes were larger, too, and as he gazed deeper he could see his reflection again within his shining pupils. Though it was too small and dark to make out any details, he found himself mesmerized by this dark pygmy within himself. He knelt closer.

A piercing chill ripped through him then, and he saw that the ice ghost had laid its hand on his shoulder. For a split second, just before his eyes landed directly on it, he saw the ghost's face; a gaping mouth with lips and jowls hanging limply from an enormous jaw, teeth that somehow looked more like toenails, and two tiny eyes, sunken deep in sockets made for much larger orbs. The hand on his shoulder was huge with impossibly pointed, jointless fingers, without claws or nails. He did not feel its weight resting on him.

He saw the ghost point with its other hand. He did not see the tears deep in the ghost's eyes.

In the abyss of snow behind him, through the reflection of the Black Ice, beyond the serpentine finger of the ghost, Timothy saw a creature fast approaching. Its billowing size was impossible to tell; its form, equally unknown. It was of a deeper, slimier, more gruesome and more gigantic black than the night around it, and it made no tremor on the earth as it ran. The howling Timothy now heard was not just the wind, but a chorus of the beast's ragged blood-lust and his own rising death scream. A roaring burst of yellow light shot from the belly of the beast. The ghost shoved Timothy away from the patch of ice, and the semitruck roared past.
