Does anyone else look at clothes online, think, "Oh my god, why is it all so expensive?" as well as, "I could make that!" (even though all you've sewn is two dice bags (one not that well), three pairs of pj trousers, and a shirt... oh and two face masks).
Just me?

So, dealer @aysekira linked me to a bunch of trailers released by Tencent and here is my biased take.
LOVE
Swords into Plowshares - my n1 trailer, it looks grim and adult and larger than life and epic.
Against the Current - with Seven Tan and Liu Xueyi. The slice of life vibe and the gorgeousness and the light and the rhythm - this is my second most favorite out of the ones I’ve seen. Dare I say, a little Minglan vibe there?
Generation to Generation - based on a novel from the author of Minglan and set in the jianghu, that trailer was fire!!! The chemistry and intensity and I will like BSE as the FL but it’s Zhou Yiran who stole the trailer for me.
In the Moonlight - it’s a teaser but it got the intense, longing, restrained vibe exactly right.
Yu Sheng You Ya - the adaptation of one of my favorite novellas - about a woman dealing with the aftermath - the trauma and the judgment - of her being raped, with her husband trying to assist her, her family not supporting her, the town gossiping about her etc - looks so very on point. Li Muge directs and Mao Xiaotong and Zhang Bin Bin have been utterly deglammed.
Light of Dawn - I would watch Zhang Ruoyun in almost anything but this modern intense dark tale looks great on its own.
Coming to Myself - another modern! What is the world coming to! But Jing Tian and Zhang Xincheng and a dark mystery and tortured romance and aaaaa!
Our Generation - Zhang Linghe and Zhao Jinmai reunite in an angsty modern and I am so on board.
Chasing Jade - the trailer looked like all my favorite tropes in a trench coat.
COULD BE OK
Love Beyond the Grave - the design is tacky enough to be a Halloween ad but I like fantasy especially costume fantasy and have a huge soft spot for CFY.
Love on Turquoise Land - this looks like a fun actioner.
Main Character - looks arthouse and amazing.
Mo Li - I am mildly allergic to my former fave Bai Lu by now, between MM and Feud, but let’s hope she’s back on form and I will be tuning in for that hope and because of Cheng Lei’s torso, which is clearly so crucial to the plot it is prominently and lengthily featured even in that very short teaser.
Liao Zhai - horror, even period horror, is not really my genre but it looks gorgeous and love the cast.
PENALTY BOX
Fight for Love - to take a book about loss and letting go and second chances and turn it into that?!? Ding Yuxi is on track to star in a second abomination of an adaptation of a favorite novel. WHYYYYYY

There’s a moment early on in Showtime’s limited series Fellow Travelers where Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton) has dark-rimmed nerd glasses on, hair flat, covered up and looking like Clark Kent just stepped out of a haberdashery. You know you’re going to get that ‘high school girl in a late 90s/early 00s teen rom com’ moment where she takes off her glasses and everyone sees that she’s been pretty all along. Bailey more than gets that moment here but while it’s a bit funny and cheeky to deglam him to make us think he’s not one of the most attractive people on the planet, the same visual metaphor is at play and is one of the central themes of this story; that people aren’t always as they seem on the surface, often hiding the truest nature of themselves, needing to, especially if you were queer in the 1950s at the height of the Lavender Scare.[...] Bomer is very good here, playing on the strengths of his matinee idol looks and finding nuance between the lines. But it’s Bailey who’s a real revelation. He plays his voice and American accent like a musical instrument and gives Tim a true arc of triumph and change.

If you can destroy it, you can exile it, but what about "shuffles it into their owner's library"? Thinking about cards like Oblation or Deglamer. Can any color shuffle away a permanent type so long as they could otherwise destroy it?
Not normally, but I wouldn’t call it off limits if there’s a larger set theme.

Cornwall's Random Card of the Day #658: Unravel the AEther

Unravel the AEther is an uncommon from Born of the Gods.
So, weird thing about this card is that it already existed in Deglamer, a Morningtide card. Why is this not Deglamer? Is that not a generic enough name for this effect? Or did the designers just kinda not realise this card already exists? I thought there was a process in the design to check for this. It's not a bid deal, just weird.

This scene - where she apologizes for never telling him she used to be a pirate (!) and he says he never told her he got fired from his job so they are even (!!!) broke my heart. They are middle class, middle aged and the rarified world of Blossom protagonists is as far as the moon for them, but this is yet another breathtaking portrayal of compatible marriage and intimate understanding and love and competence tied in.
I am gonna join @purplehanfu and beg tumblr not to sleep on Riverside Code at Qingming Festival which is a total masterpiece - The Longest Day on Chang'an the Middle Class edition.
Ostensibly about a crime committed in the Song Dynasty, this is really a character piece and the characters and the acting are impeccable.
The acting!!! Honestly, the acting!!!! There aren't any idols in this (the closest we get to young eye candy is probably Zhang Yao, who I adore in general (Love In Between is one of the most criminally underrated dramas in the last few years) but he's never really been considered one and here is is utterly deglammed) but this cast is some of the most consistently brilliant acting in even smallest roles I've seen in a while.
But also - the way this world feels lived in and real. And - this is a rarity - it's not about the glamorous and the powerful. ML is a scribe in a judicial office. His wife runs an umbrella making shop. Their biggest dream in life is to save enough money for a small house. Court and its politics are another world to them. Even the bigwigs of this narrative (Zhou Yi Wei, fucking amazing as always) are merely big fish in a small pond. He may command respect in the small marketplace, but he is not hobnobbing with the emperor.
And you get the feeling of small joys and tragedies, the powerlessness of the weak (in the beginning, the whole merchant area lives in fear of a low ranking government bully; a man who mains in eg Blossom would not even allow to wipe their shoes.) You feel realism of limitations within experience (ML will not turn out to be a miraculous fighter), of sudden death and violence lurking under the surface, the warmth of the family bonds, and the way love shows through such practical means.
I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT!!!

Are primal command and deglamer considered breaks or bends ?

hi I read your koi mil gaya post and I'm shocked to know that someone other than me also liked abcd. I never admitted to liking it before but like I was addicted to dance movies once and it's still my all time favourite. everytime I remember that it got like three sequels, I get SOOO mad 😔
ABCD was such a good film precisely because they used an actual cast of dancers, be they amateur or professional, with talent and sincerity and none of that "rich actor kid playing fake deglam roles" vibes that you get in many laughable bollywood romances. The performances were not heavily reliant on CGI effects or exotic locales, there were simple but powerful visuals (Duhai!!). It was just a couple of underdog youths having to negotiate with capitalism vs art. Mundane, heartfelt things: the feeling of not being qualified enough when faced with the boorish formality of private academy training, petty fights, routine plagiarism, defying the dance teacher, mild flirtations (there are also serious storylines which are given equal weight) etc. The sequels removed all that, placed two of the most privileged products of nepotism at the centre of the film and pushed the other actors (main characters in movie 1!!!) to the sideline. To add insult to injury, they turned the wonderful, talented Lauren Gottlieb from a friendly, passionate, elegant lead dancer character to a second fiddle Other Woman love interest in the sequel. It's maddening.
Oh, and by the way Lauren's Sun Sathiya in the original movie EATS Shraddha's version for lunch.
#answered ask#zarazaramp3#oh man just remembered the sequels blood boiling again!#remo D'Souza meet me on the maidan I'll fight you

WIG REVIEW: DON’T LOOK UP

I think I speak for all of us when I say: WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS MOVIE?! Adam McKay has stopped making silly Will Ferrell movies and started making “Oscary” dramadies for a while now and all of them are overdirected messes. This is definitely the messiest! If you like apocalyptic space jams, troubling love interests, vaguely indicting climate change and qanon conspiracies, Jonah Hill quips, random cameos, upsetting nudity and absolutely abominable wigs, this movie is for you. Let’s discuss!

Ok first off: this movie is about Leo and JLaw discovering a meteor that is headed for the earth and everyone only has 6 months to live but no one takes them seriously because they are...kind of fugly? I like Leo in comedies! He is very funny! He doesn’t wear a wig in this but he’s supposed to be a space professor and everyone thinks he’s handsome even though he fully deglammed hisself in this and sweats a lot. FINE!
JLAW’S WIG IS AN ABSOLUTE CRIME AGAINST NATURE.
When this wig first appeared, my mother exclaimed “IS THIS ON PURPOSE?” and there is no way that on any level the answer can be “YES.” WHO SAID THIS WIG WAS OK?!?!?! I HAVEN’T SEEN A RED WIG WITH BANGS THIS BAD SINCE THE QUEENS GAMBIT!!
This wig has many (MANY!) issues. The texture is garbage. THERE IS NO HAIR PART ON TOP!!! DON’T LOOK UP ON TOP OF THIS WIG!! NO SCALP! This is like a super cheap Halloween wig. AND! THE! BANGS! The bangs are so long they create side mullets?! Apparently the wigmaster worked really hard on this trash but that is fully not evident on screen. I guess this character is generally supposed to be some alternazoid punk who no one takes seriously because of her appearance and therefore no one trusts her about her meteor theories. At one point, Jonah Hill calls her The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and I suppose that was the goal but in redhead form? REGARDLESS THIS WIG IS A GHOSTMARE.
Anyway! JLaw and Leo find help in their quest to spread knowledge about this earth shattering meteor with Rob Morgan who is CURSED WITH THIS WIG. I have no idea why they decided this character needed a wig at all, let alone this very obvious and downright dusty one but NOPE.

ALSO: Cate Blanchett is in this and I realize she is supposed to be a gross morning show bot and I honestly don’t know what is more upsetting: her fake teeth or her wig (TRICK QUESTION: IT’S HER LOVE INTEREST IN THE FORM OF LEO! HE’S MOVIE MARRIED TO MELANIE LYNSKY! RUDE!) Apparently she wore her own fake teeth and recycled wig from Bombshell because of Covid restrictions and I have to say: I appreciate recycling on any level so will give this a passing grade solely based on that (and the fact that this wig and character are Bombshell adjacent anyway!)

Speaking of Republican nightmares, Meryl Streep ALSO used her own wig person and specifically wanted the kind of droopy ringlety hair that most alt-right women sport these days. Dame Meryl Streep can do no wrong and this is for sure the best wig in the entire movie but DUH.

Also this character is essentially a female Trump (with her son, Jonah Hill being a male Ivanka) and that kinda sorta worked (as did like 20% of this movie?) but regardless: this very specific wig WURQED.

My other favorite part of this movie was Mark Rylance who is always fabulous and plays a sort of Elon Musk/Jeff Bezos style dude with a very strange and grating voice. This wig is ridiculous but so is the character and CYNTHIA NIXON WISHES HER WIG WAS THIS GOOD!

Like most man wigs, the main issue was the back of the neck taper which is NOT GOOD but this character still made me (and Meryl) smile.

Things devolve quickly and all the topical humor becomes a kind of kitchen sink mess with a few vague laughs here and there, mainly from Rylance.

Also everything kind of becomes an indictment of Trump/qanon/anti-vaxxers? Which like: ok fine but IT’S A LOT.

AND THEN TIMOTHEEEEE CHAMALET SHOWS UP IN THIS MULLETT! THE AUDACITY! WHO INVITED THIS CHARACTER OR WIG?! No one needs another bent ass wig or pseudo punker character in this movie. CHAMALET AWAY.

I wish the entire third half of this movie could Chamalet away? I won’t spoil it for you if you care, but THE END OF THIS MOVIE IS HORRIFYING AND DAME MERYL STREEP SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO GO THERE!! HARRUMPH AND FOR SHAME!
VERDICT: DOESN’T WURQ

Hello there! Just listened to the podcast and really enjoyed the discussion. Was wondering if you’ve ever watched “Dogfight“ by Nancy Savoca? Not sure if it’s been mentioned/featured it on the blog before but if you have seen it, I’d love to know your thoughts.
Thanks so much!
Yes I have seen it! Dogfight was actually one of my early “discoveries” when I really started digging for women directors in earnest. It’s a really lovely film and a good example of a movie I never would have heard of or watched if I hadn’t been explicitly looking for films directed by women!
For those who haven’t seen it, it stars River Phoenix and Lili Taylor and is about a young man about to go off to serve in the Vietnam War who participates in a “Dogfight” where he and his friends try to pick up the ugliest girl they can find and bring her to a party and then the one who wins gets a cash prize.
A very sad and gross premise but the film is actually sweet. It actually has a Before Sunrise romantic walking-and-talking vibe though it came out earlier (in 1991).
Not so fun fact! Savoca said that she had a really hard time casting Lili Taylor’s role. It was written for a fat actress, but no fat actress at the time wanted to take it (for obvious reasons, I mean even though the character is the romantic lead it would be pretty gutting to play a role where your character is mocked for her physical appearance like that).
I believe she said she went with Lili Taylor because she was the only actress she met who had no vanity and was 100% willing to deglam. Also they apparently padded her out to make her look fatter, though she still looks pretty petite in the film.
Taylor and Savoca reunited on the film Household Saints, and Savoca made a few more films but post ‘90s her career really slowed down which is a shame. She’s great! She’s still out there working and it would be nice if some of the renewed energy around women directors and their work trickled down to her.
