y'know it's really considerate of nintendo to implement a play-timer in splatoon 3 to help you regulate how much you're gaming. every time i'm playing a ranked battle and see that "a communication error has occurred" message pop up, i feel at ease knowing nintendo is helping make sure i'm not having too much fun.

I once more believe Battinson Batman needs to be given a child. Or multiple. Multiple children. I am also once more rotating Ghosts Have Wings Au. 

So Batman, still early in his whole vigilante career ends up busting a shipment, nothing too surprising there. Pretty usual honestly. Except for what was in one of the crates already open. Because it looks like some sort of gemstones but… perfectly spherical. Strange. Suspicious. 

But it’s also late, er, early in the morning, and the GCPD is notoriously corrupt, so like, he’s not going to just leave the weird gemstones, each about the size of a plum or so. (Dear Gotham he’s apparently hungry, and might inwardly vow to never let anyone realize what his tired mind decided to use as measurement) 

So he, unknowingly spurred on by more than just a slight bit of ecto contamination, takes the strange spheres back home. Just puts them in his pockets and heads back to the manor that they moved back into after the whole Riddler mess. (He even found a cool cave! With a bunch of terrifying bats, but they made a glass separator! For safety!) 

But in Bruce’s defense of forgetting about them, he’s more than a little tired and hungry and just wants to sleep for a bit, y’know? So maybe he forgets about the gems as he falls asleep in the chair in the cave (Alfred was not pleased!) until he starts digging around for them. Erm. Did they fall out somewhere?? There’s no holes in his belt pockets… 

And maybe these sort of things shouldn’t slip his mind, the spheres had felt Weird with a capital W, but he gets forced to a circus and there’s an… accident. So maybe he pushed it away as not important because there’s now an angry grieving eight-year old living with him and he’s panickedly reading any and all sort of parenting books he can get a hold of because he has no clue what he’s doing. 

Yeah, maybe his back is itching like crazy no matter what he tries, and maybe he threw up the other day, but it’s fine. This is fine.

The siblings' catchup was going great talking about Robbie's job applications and Renee returning to work soon. It was until Renee asked that question, speaking in a tone that was almost impossible to hear. "So…do you still hang out with Keon?" Now that question aggravated Robbie. "Seriously Renee?" Robbie felt his face heating up with the stupidity of his sister. Things were going well and he was able to see amends to their relationship, but bringing up Keon? He always resulted in arguments and Renee must clearly know that.

"I'll answer your question, I haven't since high school. Are you happy now?" Robbie revealed, hoping to get this over with. "He said he was getting out of Sulani. Said he was joining the military. I have no clue what that dumbshit is doing or where he is." Tension held in the air and it felt too awkward to say anything afterwards…except for an apology.

Note: Here's some context for those who don't know! Growing up, Robbie has always felt overshadowed by his sister, leading to his low confidence. So he found it hard to fit in at school and make friends. As a result, he ends up being mean to defend himself so that people wouldn't look down on him (like his sister did). That continued to the present and affected his work life with being burnt out and not getting along with coworkers. In high school he did end up making friends, one of them being Keon. Let's just say Keon was bad news and Renee knew about that. She tried to warn him to stay away from him, but he didn't listen and their relationship worsened. Judging from Robbie's reaction, it sounds like something happened 👀 Now back to the present with fixing the relationship! But there are some small issues. Robbie is mean, Renee is argumentative and so they argue a lot. Robbie doesn't want to bring up the past, but Renee wants to know the answers (that's why she a detective🫡) and address these issues. Do you agree with them?

okay, so the thing with wishing we could kudos every chapter of a fic.

i get it, we all want to hit the little like button more than once, it's the easiest way to express our approval/enjoyment/gratitude. i am going to address this to a generic 'you' (hello Y/N!) and assume that 'you' has either never posted fic to ao3 or hasn't posted both oneshots and multichapter works.

hits, kudos, comments, bookmarks. every marker of popularity (which many will interpret as quality) on ao3 is inadvertantly weighted in favour of works with more chapters. no, not longer necessarily, but with more chapters. go and sort a few fandoms by any of those stats and you'll probably be able to spot this trend in action right away.

oneshots are only at the top of a tag (by the default date sorting) once, and even if you re-read it you can only leave one kudos on it.

a multichapter can stay near the top of the update-sorted results for months if you time your chapter drops right, and of course every time someone comes back for the next chapter that's another hit, and being seen more it is more likely to end up with more kudos. you can still only leave one per work, though, which limits the effects to some extent. multichapter works still tend to overall outperform oneshots on stats, and the longer they are the more likely that becomes, but you'll still usually see a couple of oneshots on the first page if you sort that list by kudos.

and a lot of people (percentage unknown) do sort by kudos (or some other stat) and works at the top of 'by kudos' will thus attract more readers and more kudos. so there's an incentive to get as many kudos as you can on your fic, and if cutting it up into 250 chapters will help... well it already does, and that's had an effect whether writers will admit to dragging fics out a bit on purpose or not, but imagine if that effect were to become orders of magnitude more intense.

even if you personally prefer longer fics cut into fairly short chapters, you probably don't want to get your 150k epic in chapters of only a 100-300 words, do you? you don't want the oneshot writers to just give up when every page, no matter how they're sorted, is full of 5000-chapter works to the point that readers now riot when asked to read a whole 2000 words in one go. your fave author is now feeling insecure because chapter 12 didn't get as many kudos as the last one did.

and this is why ao3 will never let you leave kudos on every chapter. they're aware that the site already incentivises chaptering works and doing that more than you otherwise might. so you're just going to have to learn to put an emoji heart in the comment box.

I've never really written for Marvel nor am I particularly invested in it (pretty sure the last movie I kept up with was like, the second doctor strange) but I do get in an occasional stucky kick, and sambucky is a ship I also enjoy.

Anyway thinking of a fic where Bucky does fall in love with Sam but feels like he's betraying Steve for doing so, like their love didn't mean anything if he goes for someone else. And Sam helps him recognize that loving someone else doesn't mean other love was any less, and he deserves to be happy again. He's not trying to "be another Steve" or even replace him he just wants to be a different person to make him happy.

Maybe even touch on it being kinda fucked up that Steve left after Endgame.

So let's talk about the lyrics Isolde and Kakania were singing at the end of "Through the Glass"!

As the story described, Isolde was singing a part of the opera "Tristan und Isolde," specifically the part where Isolde is waiting for her rendezvous with Tristan.

In this part, Isolde ignores the calling of horns that signals the arrival of King Marke—the king she's supposed to marry—, insisting that it's just the rustling of the wind or the trickling of the stream, even though her maid tells her over and over that it IS the sound of the horns and the king is nearby.

In our Isolde case, I think we can interpret the call of horns as symbolizing the reality that Isolde doesn't hear—or rather, doesn't want to hear. Because "the calling of horns does not sound so sweet" compared to "the silence of the night" (the peaceful dream she doesn't want to wake up from), and the promise of meeting with "He who is waiting for me in the silence of the night," which—I think we can agree—is Kakania in her dream.

And unlike the "run away with me, Cavaradossi" scene, this time Kakania responded with her part!

Or at least... in the loose sense of it, because the part Kakania chose to sing skipped a lot of events ahead from Isolde's part, which is very interesting! Isolde's lines are from Act 2, while Kakania's are from Act 3: after the king catches Tristan and Isolde in the middle of their rendezveous, Tristan gets stabbed by his betraying friend, and he wakes up with a severe injury that will kill him very soon.

I think this might be intentional—to symbolize that Isolde is stuck in the past, in the happiest moments of her life, while Kakania is facing the reality of the present, in the aftermath of everything that has happened to them.

Unlike Isolde, who sang her part faithfully to the opera, Kakania took the full creative liberty of only singing a few lines from Tristan's part and straight up skipping the rest of it. Which is a bit disappointing at first (the time she actually played along with the opera act and she didn't even do it properly, smh), but this means that every single line she sang was deliberately chosen to convey what she wanted to say to Isolde!

I interpreted the first part of the lines as her expressing how lost she felt after the Storm washed away their era. She fully expected to get reversed by the Storm to atone for her sins, and now that she's left as the only survivor, she has no place nor people to return to. Her life, her purpose, the dream she worked on all her life, and the people she strived that dream for... all gone. She no longer knows where she's standing in the world and what lies ahead for her.

We can also interpret this as Kakania responding to Isolde, who was singing and waiting for Kakania as her "Tristan," saying that she can't meet her in fear of triggering Isolde's trauma and making her condition worse.

And the second part... is Kakania's resolve, that even if everything has changed, even if she's stranded with no era to return to, she will still stay on her path of striving to the betterment of the world, of trying to fix "the cracked mirror" no matter how fragile and broken it is. Back then, by fighting for the rights of arcanists and the other "outsiders" in Vienna, and now by doing all she can to help with the Storm.

...and this also means goodbye. Because Isolde chose to stay in the past, and Kakania, who took a different path, respected Isolde's wish and headed on alone into the future.

But goodbyes don't always last forever. And as Kakania said at the end of her story:

Keiji lore post???

First, the art: I've wanted to draw Keiji wearing Vasily's bashlyk for pretty much as long as he's existed (which admittedly is not long), and I had this very specific image in mind. I tried lining the piece, but felt it ended up looking kinda flat, so I decided to just loosely colour the sketch.

Now second, the lore: To be honest I really hate writing down my OC lore because it always feels a bit insane to me, but maybe people wanna read about this cringe goober, so here goes. For the ones who are only here for the art, I'm putting this under a cut.

Meet Keiji Nakamura (again, probably. Maybe. Idk.), my new Golden Kamuy OC. He's a 15yo Russiaboo from Otaru, definitely a lovable weirdo, likely autistic, and he has dimples and a tooth gap.

He first came to be when I showed my gf this video (sorry, it's on instagram, but you should be able to watch it without an acc at least on desktop) and said how cute it would be if someone had that sort of reaction to seeing Vasily. So we made up a lil guy who is weirdly obsessed with all things Russian. He spots Vasily doing street portraiture in Otaru (some 15 years post-canon because i am physically incapable of not making post-canon AUs), and because he has no concept of shame or social awkwardness, he attaches to Vasily and makes him tell him about Russia. Vasily doesn't often get the chance to talk about Russia like that, so they end up chatting for a good while, and Vasily shows him all the art he made of home.

There's a few more scenarios we made up for him, but I'm too lazy to summarise them, so I've included the screenshots from our conversation at the bottom of this post.

One thing I do wanna talk about, though, is name in Kanji: 中村 景慈 (Nakamura Keiji). I went with 中村 because that seems to be the most common spelling of the name Nakamura, and means "main or central village" or "village in the middle" which I figured would fit well, since he's from a fairly large city.

More interesting is his first name, 景慈, because I trawled through 171 different spellings to find kanji that I like:
