In the recent past, women were told by society that they could have a fulfilling relationship or a career, but not both. There’s been a push to “have it all!” more recently, of course, but that’s not what this post is about. This post is about how James T. Kirk occupies the unique position of a male character who had to choose one or the other. There are few male characters other than him who are genuinely and unabashedly hopeless romantics who want to settle down but aren’t allowed to by the narrative. And if you view The Search for Spock as a romantic drama, then Kirk also kind of fulfills the typical female character trope of “learning that romantic love is actually more important than a career.”

As you can see, Captain James T. Kirk’s arc mirrors many female romance protagonists, and he is therefore, textually, wife material. In this essay, I will—

sovi, hal, and marl as hatchlings climbing up the taller trees in the crater to look out at the grasslands. sovi, hal, and marl going with tektite to watch them down a really old tree that got too sick to be safe. sovi, hal, and marl deciding to be treekeepers and fire watch too because it works their bodies and lets them be in nature. sovi falling behind because memorizing all the names and intricacies of plants and trees and treekeeping is more difficult for them than it is for hal and marl. sovi frustrated and angry they cant keep up and saying things they don't mean. sovi and marl getting into fistfights over it until sovi is forcibly removed from treekeeper training and made to figure out something else to do with their life. sovi watching hal and marl excel where they failed. sovi missing hal and marl when they're out in the field. sovi blundering their way through an awful, but sincere apology when they get back. sovi, hal, and marl making up because they care about each other and finally laughing by the fire together again.

sovi stopping to give marl a quick hug before their actual first solo launch. marl holding on a second too long and muttering something about talking behind the cabin they're standing outside so sovi agrees even if a bit confused. marl leading sovi to the back and turning to awkwardly admit theyre as bad with words as sovi is and sighing and leaning down to give them a firm little peck on the lips. sovi surprised but catching them before they stand up straight again and pulling them down for a better kiss that maybe lasts a little too long. sovi and marl leaning back out of breath but grinning. sovi giving them a last hug and kiss goodbye.

sovi stopping to give marl a quick hug before their (second) first solo launch. marl holding on a second too long and muttering something about talking behind the cabin they're standing outside so sovi agrees, knowing exactly what's going to happen but convincing themself it was a dream before. marl leading sovi to the back and turning to awkwardly admit theyre as bad with words as sovi is and sighing and leaning down to give them a firm little peck on the lips. sovi catching them immediately for a proper kiss and pressing, twisting, so it becomes more. sovi and marl parting, panting, and going right back in for another, and another, and another, until it becomes much more than a kiss, more than sovi ever guessed marl would be willing to do so unbelievably early. sovi and marl fixing their clothes and grinning at each other and sharing one last kiss goodbye because sovi really should be going to say bye to hal, too, and get those launch codes they already know.

sovi never going back around past marl again because they know they wont remember their first kiss nor anything else.

sovi never even looking in their direction because they know they'll see hurt there when they ignore them and pass by to talk to hornfels about feldspar or hal about the stranger's language.

n then we get a full shot in the zoom out but Dream doesnt notice it and its not focused on or brought up at all

so thats why im tryna figure out if they meant to put that there HAHA

Tired of comparing myself to other writers. It’s not even a jealousy thing (it might be lmao who knows), and I know people like my witting and I’m incredibly grateful for every one of you in my little corner of the internet. I’m just a perfectionist and I’m never satisfied with my own work and it puts me through a fucking spiral all the damn time like geez. I want my brain to let me live for once. I hate this repetitive behavior and it sucks cause I don’t know how to turn it the fuck off. It’s so frustrating when you are creative and have so many ideas but your brain just doesn’t cooperate and you really have to wait for the moment everything is in sync and run with it like you’ll never get it again. I wrote 3 fics in a week in May and I haven’t been able to do anything for a month in a half like?? Why are brains like this. 😭
