Day 1 (Fools’ Day)  ^^

Great start to an equally great course - “Design and Human Diversity” our Design Project!!

This course of ours is inclined towards ‘Inclusive Design’ or rather “Design for Inclusivity”- Kuntal De (one of the two course faculties; Rajiv Jassal, the other) 

Objectives: (as on course abstract)

“ • To expose and sensitize students to the relevance of human diversity in               industrial design.

  • To study the design fundamentals of universal and inclusive design.

  • To engage students on the process and considerations to develop designs          that facilitate access to multiple societal groups irrespective of human                  diversity.”

The day began as usual, but with an unusual start. I missed even the last bus to college. Had to take an auto. 

The class started with a brief introduction and clarification by Kuntal, about the ‘Inclusivity’ of the course and how to go about choosing a sector of interest.

Deliverables for the day were set — choose a domain or sector of interest; secondly make a calendar/plan for the upcoming 5 weeks of DP.

I had a few things in mind to take on this project:

Firstly, i want to do something for the ‘Coin Collectors’ of Ganga.                          (I had the opportunity to join a Ganga swimming camp last to last summer, in Allahabad.)                                                                                                              I came to know many problems which their community faces.

Secondly, i wanted to do something for the ‘Bus Conductors’ whom i observed many times on my commute to Vijayawada.                                                            I have in mind the thought of taking public transport as my sector and to do something for the differently abled, for their ease to get in and out.

Thirdly, i had in mind to do something for the ‘Sweepers’ who clean the sewage. 

           Coin Collectors could not be worked upon in this DP, considering that we don’t have Ganga here. (Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, South India)

I chose Bus Conductors and moved ahead for the next day.

I made a day wise division of my work plan for my DP. Just hope i follow it.  Fingers crossed. :)

Faceless

This model is based off of the description of the city of Zoe as described in Calvino’s “Invisible Cities.” It is described as a featureless city, with nothing to distinguish one building from another. The only structural characteristic mentioned are the pyramid shaped roofs. The first drawing I made illustrates the sameness, a grid-patterned city where all the buildings look the same and there is nothing about the landscape to make one building different from another. The depth of the city is illustrated by the layered roofs and walls. The second drawing is an attempt to add a personal perspective to the city. The curved aspect adds the feeling of a panoramic view, as if seen by one who is present and observing the city. Again, the repetition is seen in the nondescript, soulless facades of the buildings. The model I made tried to capture the repetitive, non-descript nature of the city. I imagine the city such that it gives off an oppressive sterile vibe and so I used the solid white sides of the cards to show the lack of distinguishing characteristics. I placed them with an even spacing so that one would not be any different from its neighbor. The model is supposed to capture the same-ness, the one-ness of the city, the city without distinction, the city without a purpose.

𝗖𝗨𝗕𝗘 | Not a simple canopy bed Project waiting for a producer ▫️ Il perché del nome CUBE risulta evidente, anche se non si tratta di un vero e proprio cubo. Le peculiarità oltre alla forma, sono gli elementi che la determinano: sono elementi componibili, realizzati in materiale plastico colorato nell’intera massa; sono elementi ripetitivi (gli 8 “angoli” sono il medesimo pezzo – così i 4 montanti verticali – così i 4 orizzontali), i montanti verticali e orizzontali poi hanno stessa sezione e potrebbero essere prodotti per estrusione. Il telaio che regge la rete a doghe, scarica il peso su una struttura poggiante a terra e che resta nascosta nella struttura “cubica” esterna. Alcuni “accessori” previsti nel progetto grazie alla struttura i cui montanti hanno una discreta dimensione di sezione. Si possono così introdurre delle “tendine”, dei “paraventi”, che scorrendo e svolgendosi nelle apposite guide verticali, possono chiudere anche tutti e quattro il lati perimetrali. Azionamento manuale, ma, fatte le opportune verifiche, eventualmente anche motorizzato.
