The Design Principles By Jason White (Medium) Defining the disciplines Let’s start by giving some basic definitions to visual design and user experience. * Visual design brings clarity to visual information. It is communication. It allows the viewer to understand an interface. Good visual design helps the user to complete tasks, read the content, be encouraged to buy the product, use the platform and more. * User experience is the end-to-end, overall experience the user has when interacting with a product or service. The user experience encompasses the visual interface but focuses more on the workflows and interactions of the user. These workflows and user journeys enable the users to be successful when interacting with the product or service. UX and UI working together Visual design and user experience are inextricably linked. I’ve never worked on a project, product, or feature that has been a success without both visual designers and user experience designers bringing their expertise together. A great UI will never work without good UX, and a great UX will fail without a good UI to support it. The marriage of the two disciplines creates harmony in the designs. Good design builds trust and emotional connections. Visual Design considerations for the non-designers Now with a base understanding, let’s say you’re a UX designer, without a graphic design background, how do you start to work out the UI concepts? Aswell as placement prints in design there are mirrored structures, borders and bands, rotations, blocks and symmetrical patterns. 

The structure within a design changes too in terms of layout and composition, sometimes there is no ground showing as the design gives full coverage. An open ground is often when there is a placement print or a border pattern etc. There are multi directional designs as well as infills and scale is also a consideration.
