What's the distinction between click on and select?

so depending on who you ask (but you asked ME which means I get to decide) "select" or "open" or "navigate to" or any other specific verb that describes the action is preferable to "click," for a number of reasons. one being that you don't need to emphasize the act of clicking because it's more helpful to emphasize the intended action of the click instead—e.g., what's important here is that you are performing xyz action, not that your index finger needs to twitch a little bit in service of doing it.

the other thing is that there's no guarantee that your reader is using a mouse to begin with, which would make "click" silly vestigial terminology at best and an accessibility blunder at worst. the google developer docs style guide (which I prefer to the microsoft manual of style in 99% of situations) tries to smooth this over with some shit about how it's okay to use "click" so long as you're pretty sure that your reader is in a desktop environment (and you should use "tap" if you think your reader is on a mobile device) but I think that's a total cop-out lol. like, on a desktop computer you could be navigating via keyboard inputs, you could be navigating via any number of mouse-replacement accessibility devices, your computer could even have a touchscreen!

IBM Norge  (International Business Machines A/S) har inngått  en samarbeidsavtale med  Høyskolen i Gjøvik (GUC – Gjøvik University College) for å bidra til å sikre utdanningstilbudet innenfor cybersikkerhet og informasjonssikkerhet. Samarbeidet er basert på IBMs University Relations (UR) programmer med fokus på Cyber Security. 

Allerede i juni i år, straks etter at Justiskomiteen via Samfunnssikkerhetsmeldingen mente at det burde etableres et nasjonalt forsknings- og kompetanseutviklingssenter i informasjonssikkerhet ved Høgskolen i Gjøvik, ble arbeidet med å etablere et slikt senter med bred tverrsektorell deltakelse annonsert, Center for Cyber- and Information Security (CCIS). 

CCIS skal bestå av flere faggrupper, delsentre og forskningslaboratorier, blant annet innen etterforskning av cyberkriminalitet, biometri, cyberforsvar, cybersikkerhet av prosesskontrollsystemer, informasjonssikkerhetsledelse og personvern. 

IBM vil, gjennom samarbeidsavtalen, inngå som en viktig bidragsyter til CCIS, blant annet med etablering av en CyberSecurity teknologiplattform innenfor IBMs University Relations-programmer med fri nedlastning av programvare og/eller bruk av University Cloud.

I tillegg til IBM er en rekke sentrale partnere allerede med i samarbeidet, inkludert Statkraft, Statnett, Nasjonal Sikkerhetsmyndighet, Eidsiva, Politiets Sikkerhetstjeneste, NC Spectrum, FFI, Norsk ID-senter, Cyberforsvaret, Mnemonic, Telenor, Politihøgskolen, Kripos, og Forsvarets Ingeniørhøgskole. 

Når så mange av landets tyngste aktører innen sikkerhet går sammen for å styrke utdanningstilbudet innenfor cybersikkerhet og infomasjonssikkerhet, betyr dette det største kompetanseløftet innen dette fagfeltet noen sinne. Resultatet blir en styrking av utdanningstilbudet på Høgskolen i Gjøvik i form av et internasjonalt kraftsenter innen informasjonssikkerhet, men også etablering av et forskningssenter som marker starten på en unik, innovativ og historisk satsning på informasjonssikkerhet – som vil bidra til at Norge får en ledende rolle innen satsning og forskning på digital sikkerhet. 

– IBM har som målsetning å være den ledende leverandør av CyberSecurity-teknologi og Smarter Public Safety-løsninger i det norske og internasjonale markedet, sier Arne Norheim, adm.dir i IBM Norge. Deltakelse i et forsknings- og kompetanseutviklingsmiljø som CCIS er derfor svært viktig, der samarbeid og dialog mellom GUC, sentrale offentlige institusjoner og industrien vil åpne opp for kompetanseutveksling og tverrfaglig forståelse for hvilke utfordringer vi står overfor og hvordan vi kan være med å bidra til å løse disse.

– At så mange behovseiere går sammen om å løse en kompetanseutfordring ved å investere i akademia, er historisk, hevder Morten Irgens, viserektor ved Høyskolen i Gjøvik. At IBM, med stor kompetanse og gode løsninger innen CyberSecurity blir med og bidrar med å tilgjengeliggjøre sin teknologi og åpner sine forskningssentre er svært gledelig. Vi har et felles mål om at samarbeidet skal gi konkrete resultater i form av løsninger innen CyberSecurity som kan implementeres hos kunder i det norske markedet og som kan fremstå som en standard plattform for overordnet sikkerhet.
