Please leave us out of your talks of White Monarchies, please leave us out, our inherent structure of having Kings in the first place was an act of colonialism after Simon Metcalfe came to our country with guns and Kamehameha took the opportunity to commit harm against the Hawaiian people using technology we never had before (guns, cannons, etc)

After the Kamehameha lineage began to shift, we returned to old standing practices of Hawaiian Kapu and Ali’i systems and because we had been colonised, did them in western ways (i.e. voting) and attempted to reinstate our own culture after we had been given egregious pushback from white missionaries and white businessmen.

The act of our Kings (Kalakaua, who was voted in) attempting to restore our culture caused several attacks. The Bayonette Constitution (In which he was held at bayonet point and forced to sign a constitution written by white supremacist businessmen who held power in Hawaii)

Later, once Lili’uokalani was elected, she opted to write a new constitution, creating the 1891 constitution.

This would eventually result in the overthrow of Lili’uokalani in 1893 by foreign White Businessmen who attempted (and succeed!) to ruin our ability to govern over Hawaii. Lili’uokalani was held in house arrest for nine months. She eventually died attempting to restore our ability to rule over our own nation, but we know how that ended for us.

I hate the idea of even defending a concept of a monarchy, and I want to stress that I am NOT interested in monarchy. I don’t WANT monarchy. But what I do want is for Hawaiians to stop being thrown under the bus for people who want to talk over us and what actually happened to our people. 

PLEASE leave us out of this.

All Monarchy, and the concept of Monarchy, revolves around the oppression of people and separation of power, and deeply attaches itself to its direct relation to colonialism, and very often, White Supremacy, and often in indigenous places, the concept of Supremacy in general, but Hawaiians had a VERY different system of government which we implemented into our history.

I don’t even have the ability to discuss it in detail, politics and government structures are very complicated, and I am not saying it was perfect, the ai’kapu system, the ahupua’a systems, the kahu of KU system, not all of it was perfect and I will NEVER defend that. I know of not a single government system I can point to and call perfect.

I am just saying it is not the same, and shoving our queen’s horrid treatment and abuse at the hands of white people to the side and blatantly misrepresenting our government systems is not fair to us as an indigenous people and I am begging you to leave us out of it. Please.
