'Reise Reise' turns 20 today 💿🎶
20 years from today, on the 27th of September 2004, Rammstein's fourth studio album 'Reise Reise' was released in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and several other countries. It was most likely named after the old saying "Reise, Reise!" as a signal for the sailors of a sailing ship to get up.
Recordings of this album took place in the El Cortijo Studio in Málaga, Spain, where the band gathered in November 2003. Producer for this record was once again Jacob Hellner, and a making of about this recording process and the band's time in Spain was released on the 'Völkerball' DVD in 2006. During interviews for this documentary, the bandmembers expressed that this recording session seemed to be more relaxed than the last ones, and thought about several alternative names for this album - Schneider liked the title "Rot", Flake rooted for "Nein", Paul thought about "Amerika" and "Amore" as titles, Olli liked "Reise Reise" and Richard, a bit clueles, refrained from making a suggestion. Till apparently wasn't asked or declined talking about his ideas. Documentary parts with english subtitles can be found here, here and here.
The album was originally planned as a double album, but this idea was ultimatly discarded. The following songs were recorded during the session for this album, but were used on 'Rosenrot' later: Rosenrot, Wo bist du, Mann gegen Mann, Zerstören, Ein Lied, Feuer und Wasser and Hilf mir. Additional demos exist for the following: Absinth, Eisenmann, Holz und Sonntag bei Omi.
The promotional photosession for this album was done by Olaf Heine and most likely was inspired by the movie "Falling down", starring Michael Douglas.
The cover for this album shows the outside of a aircraft's blackbox with the German imprint "Flugrekorder nicht öffnen" ("Do not open flight recorder") on it. Linked to this design, there is a hidden track before the first song on REISE, REISE - it can be heard on standard CD players by rewinding. It features radio messages (the black box recording) from the Boeing 747SR (Japan Airlines Flight 123), which crashed on August 12, 1985, killing 520 people. Up to now, it remains the deadliest single-aircraft crash in history. This dark aesthetic of all of this combined also suits the song "Dalai Lama" on the album. This song is based on the German ballad "Erlkönig", written in the 18th century by Goethe, and for this song the first instrumental tracks were written and finished for this album.
The limited digipack contained a picture from the above mentioned photoshoot.
The Japanese cover of the album is the same one that was later used for Rosenrot, a picture of the ice breaker USS Atka in the Antarctic from 1960.
As part of the promotion for 'Reise Reise', three additional CDs were published with interviews of the band members. CD 1 contained an interview with Till and Flake, CD2 with Olli and Paul and CD3 with Richard and Schneider. The linked videos contain the original soundtrack with the german interviews and a spoken english translation.
Regarding the success of this album: REISE, REISE reached number 1 in the album charts in seven countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Finland, Iceland, Estonia and Mexico). After the release of REISE, REISE, Billboard declared Rammstein to be the most successful German-speaking band internationally. The album achieved 1x silver, 3x gold and 6x platinum. The song 'Mein Teil' was nominated for a Grammy. All in all, Reise, Reise reached 47th place in the Top 50 album charts of 2005.
The Reise Reise tour started with one concert (September 30th 2004) at the Label showcase party "10 Jahre Motor" and marks the only acoustic concert the band has ever played. For the occasion, the band dressed up as East Berlin police women.
After that, three concerts at the Knaack club followed on the 11th, 12th and 13th of October, 2004, where the album was presented at fan club only concerts.
Two examples for tickets for the Reise Reise tour:

The third album by JG Thirlwell‘s synthesizer-based Xordox project, Terraform, is released today, May 2, 2025, by Ectopic Ents. The album is released on black and white splatter vinyl with download code, as well as a six panel digipack CD. 'Terraform' is released on streaming services on May 9 2025. You can hear previews and purchase the album at the Foetus Shoppe or on JG Thirlwell's Bandcamp, when Bandcamp Friday begins at midnight PST May 2, 2025
The long-awaited album Terraform merges science fiction, crime noir and epic film score elements in a highly evocative and gripping melange. In this chapter of the Xordox saga, the intensity increases, as the propulsive compositions soar, tumble and occasionally explode. The video from the album, “Planet Xordox”, is directed by David Slade (Black Mirror, 30 Days Of Night, Hard Candy etc) and will drop soon. Watch this space!

TRIPITAKA - the lost spiritual sequel to Cosmology of Kyoto was found
This post is a compilation of a series of tweets I have composed over a period of weeks during this summer.
For years, it was uncertain whether TRIPITAKA 玄奘三蔵求法の旅, by Soft Edge, had in fact ever been published. I remind the more absent-minded readers that this is the studio responsible for the mythical CD-ROM Cosmology of Kyoto, originally released in Japan in 1993, later published in the United States by Yano Electric in 1995. Knowledge of this their second and final production comes solely from the online CVs of producers Hiroshi Ōnishi and Mori Kōichi. No other information could be found online, and no actual copy of the game was known to exist.
Earlier this year, this disc surfaced at Yahoo Auctions. It sold for nearly $300 after 24 bids.
As suggested by its tile, which translates to Xuanzang Sanzo's Dharma-Seeking Journey, it was always assumed that the game illustrated episodes of the life of the celebrated Chinese Buddhist monk, particularly his 7th century pilgrimage to India. The captures printed on the back not only show a character highly reminiscent of the ancient scholar, they depict a variety of scenes taking place in China and India.
According to the severely incomplete archived version of PD Inc's website, the Japanese publisher responsible for this digipack, it was available for sale at museums hosting the 1999 Silk Road Journey To The West exhibition, which suitably matches the date printed on the back cover. However, this date presents yet another open question, as the Ōnishi-San and Kōichi-San bios both list it as a 1995 production.
The technical specifications may provide an enlightening clue, as they refer to Windows 95, 640x480px resolution and an 8-Bit color mode. This indicates that TRIPITAKA was indeed developed sometime between 1993 and 1995, although it was never published in the CD-ROM game circuit, certainly not in the immediate years after its development was completed. Combined with the data retrieved from the publisher's website, the edition shown here appears to have been produced solely for the occasion, as a means to diversify the museum shop catalog for this major exhibit, given the shared theme.
It would have been nearly impossible, had the program been in fact published in 1995, for a single copy to not have been spotted or mentioned online by the many Japanese collectors who have attempted to locate it for decades, unsuccessfully. On the other hand, a CD-ROM that was sold at a museum exhibit is likely to be purchased by visitors who were entirely unaware of the item's relevance as an elusive multimedia gem.
If a tangent is permitted here, both productions are inextricably linked with the museum space, and as far as I can speculate, Cosmology of Kyoto was, itself, also published with the intention of being made available in gallery stores in addition to computer game retailers. I say this because this was a production made possible by collaborative efforts including a variety of Japanese museums, to the extent these are referenced by name in the game's credits.
Considering the price at which the item was sold at auction, I was fairly certain that it was purchased by one such video game collector who knew exactly what they were bidding for. Later in July, I was able to locate the buyer and establish contact. Initially, the buyer was only able to produce this screenshot of the disc program launcher. The title reads "Cosmology of Asia", validating the claims that Soft Edge was in effect planning for series of edutainment software prior to its demise in the mid-90s.
In my second contact with the owner, I asked if he was available to produce a disc image and share it online for purposes of software preservation. The owner politely declined, stating that this was not something he was willing to do but offered to record the following gameplay video instead.
youtube
At a glance, the art style of Tripitaka is unsurprisingly similar to that of Cosmology. Most of its episodes occur during the day, whereas the latter was mostly played under the dark cover of night. The first scene depicts a dying Xuanzang reminiscing on his journeys in the company of a young chronicler. Structurally, both games are also nearly indistinguishable from one another, producing ample historical information for context, including detailed maps and chronologies.
TRIPITAKA was considered to be lost media for decades. As such, the importance of this footage could hardly be overstated. I would not hesitate to compare this development to the unearthing of Osamu Sato's Chu-Teng, the Eastern Mind sequel that was also deemed lost for many years, miraculously found during the time this blog was inactive.
I am delighted to have played a minor role in the unraveling of this thirty year old mystery, and can hardly contain my enthusiasm, as I now find myself equipped with sufficient information to produce a full post concerning a game about which I could not have written more than a sentence, just last year.
I would also like to thank the author of the @mendelpalace Tumblr for his timely alert regarding the Yahoo listing.

Artist Otoha, who sang the new season of Black Butler’s opening song, “The Parade of Battlers,” has released a “two-disc CD + Blu-ray set in a digipack with a gatefold jacket” featuring original illustrations of S and Ciel.

It is so extravagant that the EP contains a few more songs, a video of the bts of the official video, their concert in Shibuya plus original illustrations that definitely influenced by the anime.
Unfortunately, it can’t be shipped where I am.

Trisol Press Release: Emilie Autumn
Posted: (on or around) April 18, 2006 Archived from Battered Rose
This is without a doubt the most promising newcomer act Trisol has ever signed. In fact, it is possibly one of the most anticipated "gothic" releases of a debut act ever!
Courtney Love's "anarchy violinist" returns to the stage and is keeping the spotlight all to herself. Fresh off the road as Ms. Love's touring bandmate, and with appearances on Jay Leno and David Letterman late night TV shows, glossy magazine centerfolds, and guest spots on the albums of such artists as Love, Billy Corgan, and Die Warzau under her corset strings, EMILIE AUTUMN's devilishly dark lyrics and industrial-strength voice reinvent "gothic" for the masses.
Chosen by Interview Magazine (USA's most famous pop-culture publication) as one of their "14 Artists to Watch" , EA's theatrical stage show is a sexy circus of gothic burlesque backed by her all-girl band. But as the sole composer, performer, and producer of her dramatic new album, "OPHELIAC" gets personal. Written in the style she calls "victoriandustrial", "OPHELIAC" draws upon EMILIE AUTUMNS's influences as a child prodigy classical violinist and combines them with her passion for the harsh industrial of Laibach & Front 242, the sublime melodicism of Depeche Mode, and the drama of Moi dix Mois and Visual Kei. Accentuated by EMILIE AUTUMNS's signature metal-style violin shredding, heartbreakingly lush strings, and menacing lyrics growled with enough intensity to make your hairs stand on end, the resulting noise is a harpsichord-heavy romp through Victorian asylums where screaming is allowed and girls always get revenge.
"OPHELIAC" comes as a limited, luxurious double digipack with a glossy fold out poster, 28 page picture booklet, and bonus CD with exclusive tracks, live performance video, photo gallery, and behind-the-scenes footage into the world of EMILIE AUTUMN (Emilie shows you how to apply her signature makeup, how to tie a corset, and more)!

New CD tower is definitely needed now.... ideally the same or similar to that tall one I've got, and one like that black one on top (or a bigger and better one to replace that black one, as it's starting to fall apart). Think I can fit maybe one or two CDs on the big one, and I still have one more CD stuck in transit, then there's also another that I'm looking at getting.
I also think this is the first time in I think, ten years since I had made that bigger CD shelf in woodwork at school that it's been completely filled up. And I'm thinking I definitely should've made it a bit bigger. Definitely should've made the shelves in it slightly taller, as the first two are the perfect size for jewel cases, which is the measurements I had in mind when I made it, but some stupid fucking digipacks won't fit on either of the first two. They fit on the bottom one, though, as somehow that one ended up being slightly taller. But I really would've liked to put Louis Tomlinson's Live album with his other two on the top shelf. If only every CD was released in jewel cases, not stupid fucking digipacks. Or at least make digipacks the exact same size as jewel cases.
Anyway, close up of each shelf. Dunno if you can read each spines, some have faded spines due to how long I've had them or I've gotten them secondhand like that.

Anyway, fuck streaming.
Buy physical media.
