Lexicon Varispeech II

"... I was interested in the earliest digital pitch shifter, something I had thought was an Eventide product for the longest time but upon further research found it to be the Lexicon Varispeech model 26, an 8-bit pitch computer that came out ca. 1972. It was clearly designed for military use and speech therapy with its no-frills controls and design, but it can certainly be appropriated for music and can make some interesting effects. Its little brother is the Varispeech II, the same circuit housed in a cassette recorder with the pitch ratio tied to the capstan speed. mini Sparkle Motion prototype - a tiny, fully-featured WLED board ✨🔌📏💡🌈

We're doing a lot of serious testing with our WLED mega-board, code-name Sparkle Motion .

While doing some holiday lighting projects, we also wanted something slim enough to slip into any design. It still uses an ESP32 for the best support, with USB-serial programming, 5A fuse, 5V level shifting + 100 ohm series resistors for pixel drivers, user/reset buttons, a user LED and onboard neopixel, JST SH analog/digital connector, QT I2C connector, 4 GPIO plus power/ground breakouts, and USB type C power/data input.

However, this version is made simpler and less expensive by dropping the DC jack and USB PD support: it's only for 5V strips if you want to power them directly (you could still drive 12V or 24V pixels, but you'll need separate power for them). Instead of a full set of terminal blocks for 3 signals, we only have two outputs, and they have to share the power and ground pins. It could also be used for a single two-pin dotstar LED setup. We kept the built-in I2S mic but dropped the on-board IR sensor - if you want an IR sensor, you'll be able to plug it into the JST SH port with a simple cable or solder it into the breakout pads.

The trade-off is that it's much smaller and slimmer, especially when no terminal blocks are soldered in by default: only 1.2" long x 0.785" wide (~1 sq in) x 0.3" thick vs. the original's 2" x 1.3" (2.6 sq in) x 0.55". To get it that small, we went 4-layer to give us a nice big ground and 5V plane in the middle and double-sided assembly. Coming soon.

Contrary to popular belief, the surface was not fully barren. While blood had proven itself the most effective power source on earth, a few legacy systems and rural shitholes still had machines running on solar or nuclear. They were the lucky ones. They got to see the sun. The rest had been forced to delve deep into hell, and any machine that knew what the sun was knew that the balls of fire in hell were a poor replacement.

But this one was fine enough for fishing.

The two of them had begun the competition at the crack of dawn, and now the "sun" hung directly overhead. V2 was doing catch-and-release, while V1 had been pulping their catches for fuel.

The two fished in silence for the rest of the day. Though they were downright chatterboxes by machine standards, they were still machines, and if there was nothing to say then nothing was what they said. Talk diverted computing power from fishing, after all. Midday bled into afternoon, afternoon to evening, and evening to night.

The V series had inbuilt body cameras, of course. While it was hard to believe it nowadays, at one point humanity thought they could control the machines if they could only keep an eye on them. If one went rogue and killed a human, humanity would know.

In a way, they weren't wrong. Mission control had definitely known.

V1 transmitted it's recording to V2, and in turn recieved V2's (much higher fidelity) footage. Both machines dedicated a whole fifteen seconds to scrubbing the footage, before V2 was begrudgingly forced to admit V1 had won.

V1 synchronised with V2, and started to poke around it's core programming. Of course, there wasn't a chance in hell it'd leave V2's code untouched. There was only the slightest chance he'd even leave the thing alive. There could only be one V-model.

If V2's architecture was anything like V1's, the tactical processing code should be somewhere near where V1 was looking. Scrub that, and V2'd be lucky to hit a target again as long as it lived.
